Increased Prevalence Of Suicide In The Adolescent Population Within The Lgbtq+ Community Compared To Adolescents In The Heterosexual Population: An Integrative Review, Natasha Denese Causey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

According to research, young Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and more (LGBTQ+) are currently experiencing a mental health crisis. Suicide ideations reportedly begin sooner in LGBQ+ adolescents, 13 to 18 years of age. Suicide ideation is defined by the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), as having serious thoughts about suicide with a plan. This involves LGBTQ+ adolescents shifting from suicidal ideation to planning more quickly than their heterosexual (straight) peers. Adolescents who identify as LGBTQ+ showed a higher lifetime risk of suicide thoughts than their heterosexual peers (26.1 percent to 13 percent, respectively). Additionally, 5.4 …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In today’s volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous world, senior executives face a myriad of difficult decisions. These decisions are often accompanied by a barrage of stimuli, which can complicate decision-making processes. To traverse these challenges, those in the upper echelons of leadership must manage their selective attention well, make clear sense of unfolding events, and act upon them in ways that maximize organization outcomes. However, there is a gap in research around how the upper echelons of leadership manage their selective attention in high-stimuli decision scenarios. This qualitative grounded theory research addresses this gap by studying the cognitive processes used …

Understanding the neural processes underpinning individual differences in early language development is of increasing interest, as it is known to vary in typical development and to be quite heterogeneous in neurodevelopmental conditions. However, few studies to date have tested whether early brain measures are indicative of the developmental trajectory of language, as opposed to language outcomes at specific ages. We combined recordings from two longitudinal studies, including typically developing infants without a family history of autism, and infants with increased likelihood of developing autism (infant-siblings) (N = 191). Electroencephalograms (EEG) were recorded at 6 months, and behavioral assessments at …

Conjugation's Toolkit: The Roles Of Nonstructural Proteins In Bacterial Sex, Matthew B Cooke, Christophe Herman Mar 2023

Conjugation's Toolkit: The Roles Of Nonstructural Proteins In Bacterial Sex, Matthew B Cooke, Christophe Herman

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Bacterial conjugation, a form of horizontal gene transfer, relies on a type 4 secretion system (T4SS) and a set of nonstructural genes that are closely linked. These nonstructural genes aid in the mobile lifestyle of conjugative elements but are not part of the T4SS apparatus for conjugative transfer, such as the membrane pore and relaxosome, or the plasmid maintenance and replication machineries. While these nonstructural genes are not essential for conjugation, they assist in core conjugative functions and mitigate the cellular burden on the host. This review compiles and categorizes known functions of nonstructural genes by the stage of conjugation …

Is The U-Shaped Curve Still Of Relevance To Oxygenation Of Critically Ill Patients?, Daniel Martin, Jong A De, Peter Radermacher

Peninsula Medical School

Virtually every drug has an effective and toxic dose and oxygen is no exception. Molecular oxygen has been referred to as “janus-headed”, inasmuch as it is vital for mitochondrial respiration and toxic due to formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS share the “friend and foe character”, being both toxic and vital for host defence mechanisms [1]. Over 90% of oxygen consumption is used for adenosine triphosphate production via mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation; however, approximately 1–3% of the oxygen consumption is utilised at complexes I and III of the electron transport chain to generate superoxide anions. Whilst ROS play a vital …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Projections of Antarctica's contribution to future sea level rise are associated with significant uncertainty, in part because the observational record is too short to capture long-term processes necessary to estimate ice mass changes over societally relevant timescales. Records of grounding line retreat from the geologic past offer an opportunity to extend our observations of these processes beyond the modern record and to gain a more comprehensive understanding of ice-sheet change. Here, we present constraints on the timing and inland extent of deglacial grounding line retreat in the southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, obtained via direct sampling of a subglacial lake located …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we designed, fabricated, and characterized the first nitrogen (N)-doped single-crystalline 4H silicon carbide (4H-SiC) electrode for sensing the neurotransmitter dopamine. This N-doped 4H-SiC electrode showed good selectivity for redox reactions of dopamine in comparison with uric acid (UA), ascorbic acid (AA), and common cationic ([Ru(NH3)6]3+), anionic ([Fe(CN)6]3-), and organic (methylene blue) redox molecules. The mechanisms of this unique selectivity are rationalized by the unique negative Si valency and adsorption properties of the analytes on the N-doped 4H-SiC surface. Quantitative electrochemical detection of dopamine by the 4H-SiC electrode …

Cross-Modal Functional Connectivity Supports Speech Understanding In Cochlear Implant Users, Amanda M Fullerton, Deborah A Vickers, Robert Luke, Addison N Billing, David Mcalpine, Heivet Hernandez-Perez, Jonathan E Peelle, Jessica J M Monaghan, Catherine M Mcmahon

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Sensory deprivation can lead to cross-modal cortical changes, whereby sensory brain regions deprived of input may be recruited to perform atypical function. Enhanced cross-modal responses to visual stimuli observed in auditory cortex of postlingually deaf cochlear implant (CI) users are hypothesized to reflect increased activation of cortical language regions, but it is unclear if this cross-modal activity is "adaptive" or "mal-adaptive" for speech understanding. To determine if increased activation of language regions is correlated with better speech understanding in CI users, we assessed task-related activation and functional connectivity of auditory and visual cortices to auditory and visual speech and non-speech …

Allosteric Effects Of E. Coli Ssb And Recr Proteins On Reco Protein Binding To Dna, Min Kyung Shinn, Sumit K Chaturvedi, Alexander G Kozlov, Timothy M Lohman

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Escherichia coli single stranded (ss) DNA binding protein (SSB) plays essential roles in DNA maintenance. It binds ssDNA with high affinity through its N-terminal DNA binding core and recruits at least 17 different SSB interacting proteins (SIPs) that are involved in DNA replication, recombination, and repair via its nine amino acid acidic tip (SSB-Ct). E. coli RecO, a SIP, is an essential recombination mediator protein in the RecF pathway of DNA repair that binds ssDNA and forms a complex with E. coli RecR protein. Here, we report ssDNA binding studies of RecO and the effects of a 15 amino acid …

Vaccine Effectiveness Against Influenza A(H3n2)-Associated Hospitalized Illness: United States, 2022, Mark W Tenforde, Jennie H Kwon, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with historically low influenza circulation during the 2020-2021 season, followed by an increase in influenza circulation during the 2021-2022 US season. The 2a.2 subgroup of the influenza A(H3N2) 3C.2a1b subclade that predominated was antigenically different from the vaccine strain.

METHODS: To understand the effectiveness of the 2021-2022 vaccine against hospitalized influenza illness, a multistate sentinel surveillance network enrolled adults aged ≥18 years hospitalized with acute respiratory illness and tested for influenza by a molecular assay. Using the test-negative design, vaccine effectiveness (VE) was measured by comparing the odds of current-season influenza vaccination in influenza-positive …
