Rapamycin Perfluorocarbon Nanoparticle Mitigates Cisplatin-Induced Acute Kidney Injury, Qingyu Zhou, James D Quirk, Ying Hu, Huimin Yan, Joseph P Gaut, Christine T N Pham, Samuel A Wickline, Hua Pan

2020-Current year OA Pubs

For nearly five decades, cisplatin has played an important role as a standard chemotherapeutic agent and been prescribed to 10-20% of all cancer patients. Although nephrotoxicity associated with platinum-based agents is well recognized, treatment of cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury is mainly supportive and no specific mechanism-based prophylactic approach is available to date. Here, we postulated that systemically delivered rapamycin perfluorocarbon nanoparticles (PFC NP) could reach the injured kidneys at sufficient and sustained concentrations to mitigate cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury and preserve renal function. Using fluorescence microscopic imaging and fluorine magnetic resonance imaging/spectroscopy, we illustrated that rapamycin-loaded PFC NP permeated and …

Botulinum Neurotoxin Injections In Children With Self-Injurious Behaviors, Mariam Hull, Mered Parnes, Joseph Jankovic Mar 2023

Botulinum Neurotoxin Injections In Children With Self-Injurious Behaviors, Mariam Hull, Mered Parnes, Joseph Jankovic

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Self-injurious behaviors are repetitive, persistent actions directed toward one's body that threaten or cause physical harm. These behaviors are seen within a broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions, often associated with intellectual disability. Injuries can be severe and distressing to patients and caregivers. Furthermore, injuries can be life-threatening. Often, these behaviors are challenging to treat and require a tiered, multimodal approach which may include mechanical/physical restraints, behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, or in some cases, surgical management, such as tooth extraction or deep brain stimulation. Here, we describe a series of 17 children who presented to our institution with self-injurious behaviors …

Introduction/Background: Climate change is impacting our patients’ health now— heatwaves, flooding and storms, wildfires all have adverse effects on patients’ health. For our most vulnerable communities it is a threat multiplier, worsening already prevalent disease states. “Clinicians have a powerful megaphone - and a profound responsibility - to effectively communicate” to their patients the relationship between climate and its effects on their health.[1] The messages need to be consistent and clear across and within professions. Yet, while most clinicians are “concerned” that climate is changing, only a few have knowledge and skills about its specific impacts on health and …

Cardiovascular Health Through Vitamin C Intake, Elizabeth A. Moxley Mar 2023

Cardiovascular Health Through Vitamin C Intake, Elizabeth A. Moxley

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin, coenzyme, and cofactor in the biosynthesis of carnitine, a molecule that is required to oxidize fatty acids or convert fat in the body into energy. An adequate intake of vitamin C helps to facilitate osteoblast and osteodentin formation, synthesize catecholamines, reduce urinary folic acid excretion, and improve the absorption of dietary iron.1 Since humans lack endogenous synthesis of vitamin C, it is necessary to obtain adequate levels in the diet. Vitamin C is found in foods such as citrus fruits (oranges, kiwi, lemon, grapefruit), tomatoes, bell peppers, strawberries, white potatoes, …

Imaging Mass Cytometry (IMC) is an emerging multiplexed imaging technology for analyzing complex microenvironments using more than 40 molecularly-specific channels. However, this modality has unique data processing requirements, particularly for patient tissue specimens where signal-to-noise ratios for markers can be low, despite optimization, and pixel intensity artifacts can deteriorate image quality and downstream analysis. Here we demonstrate an automated content-aware pipeline, IMC-Denoise, to restore IMC images deploying a differential intensity map-based restoration (DIMR) algorithm for removing hot pixels and a self-supervised deep learning algorithm for shot noise image filtering (DeepSNiF). IMC-Denoise outperforms existing methods for adaptive hot pixel and background …

Using Federal Public Lands To Model A New Energy Future: Why The Biden Administration Should Prioritize Renewable Energy Development On Public Lands, Meghen Sullivan Mar 2023

Using Federal Public Lands To Model A New Energy Future: Why The Biden Administration Should Prioritize Renewable Energy Development On Public Lands, Meghen Sullivan

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Oil and gas extraction on public lands and waters is responsible for twenty percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. If American public lands were their own country, they would be the fifth-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world. As of 2020, only twenty percent of total U.S. electricity generation came from renewable energy sources. While renewable energy development on public lands has increased, most renewable energy comes from private lands. However, public lands contain immense renewable energy potential; for example, it is estimated that half of this country’s geothermal resources are found on public lands. Despite underutilized renewable energy potential …

Crumbling Crown Jewels: Addressing The Impact Of Recreational Overuse In America's National Parks, Ellen Spicer

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

National Parks are the “crown jewels” of America. However, in recent years they have become subjected to rampant overcrowding and overuse, so much so that they are being loved to death. The 1916 National Park Service (“NPS”) Organic Act calls for the conservation of “the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life . . . and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave [park sites] unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Due to increased visitation, one of the mandates of the NPS is being …

Making Room For The Past In The Future: Managing Urban Development With Cultural Heritage Preservation, Kubra Guzin Babaturk Mar 2023

Making Room For The Past In The Future: Managing Urban Development With Cultural Heritage Preservation, Kubra Guzin Babaturk

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

Few would disagree that art and architecture are indispensable aspects of the collective human experiences. But can there be “too much” of it? How much is “too much?” Could art and cultural heritage be a hindrance to progress, urbanization, and sustainability? Which art is worth saving? A growing question is how to balance and reconcile expanding urban needs with efforts to preserve cultural heritage. Many cities across the global face this fresh moral dilemma. Cities like Istanbul, Rome, and Cairo––heirs to great empires, with history and art cursing through every alley, are still modern-day metropolises, with ever-burgeoning populations and social …

Toward A Utah Intentionally Created Surplus Program, Devin Stelter

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

The Colorado River Basin continues to face a now two decade-long drought sparked by the drastic effects of climate change on the region. Climate forecasting predicts that the adverse effects of climate change will only increase in severity in years to come. These effects have led federal, state, tribal, and private actors operating in the basin to search for innovative and effective solutions to the significant water scarcity problems that will persist into the future. A closely linked threat stemming from Colorado River water scarcity is the prospect of a “Compact call” on Upper Basin water by the Lower Basin …

The Sustainable Development Law and Policy Brief (“SDLP”) is celebrating twenty-two years of legal scholarship on issues related to environmental, energy, natural resources, and international development law. SDLP continues to provide cutting-edge solutions to these legal issues in the face of the global COVID-19 Pandemic, while also transitioning back into a “new normal.” This issue is no different, as we published articles challenging our lawmakers and policy heads to address the impending needs of our communities to develop more sustainable infrastructure—needs that are only exacerbated by man-made climate change. We are proud of the work published, and we are forever …

Left-Behind Bangladeshi Wives Of Muslim Male Migrants In New York: A Critique Of Vivek Bald’S Bengali Harlem And The Lost Histories Of South Asian America, Prerana Das Mar 2023

Left-Behind Bangladeshi Wives Of Muslim Male Migrants In New York: A Critique Of Vivek Bald’S Bengali Harlem And The Lost Histories Of South Asian America, Prerana Das

Journal of International Women's Studies

Vivek Bald wrote Bengali Harlem and the Lost Histories of South Asian America to trace the untold story of Muslim Bengali men’s migration from British colonial Bengal throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and integration into the U.S. during the Asian exclusion era. This book review deconstructs gaps around Muslim women’s representation within Bengali Harlem through three analytical frameworks: self-orientalization and differential assimilation; masculinities and transnational migration; and the biopolitics of the racialized female body. This review aims to question how patriarchal constructions of Muslim masculinity impact men’s decisions to migrate and establish communities in New York. It explores how …

Feminist Theorizing In The International Relations Discipline, Inass Abdulsada Ali Mar 2023

Feminist Theorizing In The International Relations Discipline, Inass Abdulsada Ali

Journal of International Women's Studies

The discipline of International Relations has been a science for almost a century and has undergone considerable development and dynamism as a field of knowledge. In the aftermath of the First World War, traditional idealistic trends prevailed. Still, after the end of the Second World War, the theory of realism dominated the analysis of international relations, international politics, and its laws and mechanisms. With the inter-paradigm debate of the 1980s, a broad spectrum of theories of international relations emerged, the most significant of which are critical theories including feminism. Feminist theory has since become central to the debates about global …

The Case For Working With Feminist New Materialisms Against The Dualisms That Divide Us, Ștefania Chihaia Mar 2023

The Case For Working With Feminist New Materialisms Against The Dualisms That Divide Us, Ștefania Chihaia

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper provides a theoretical overview of dualisms which lie at the foundation of Western thought in an attempt to highlight the fundamental contribution that feminist new materialisms bring to sociological theory and practice and beyond. To delineate the oppressive patterns of thought generated by anthropocentric dualistic thinking, I will draw on the influential works of ecofeminist Val Plumwood, science studies scholar and feminist Donna Haraway, and feminist theorist Karen Barad within the material turn. The exploration begins with an analysis of the Cartesian subject-object dichotomy rejected by post-humanists and new materialists, a dichotomy which spawns many others, and continues …

Artificial Intelligence-Altered Videos (Deepfakes), Image-Based Sexual Abuse, And Data Privacy Concerns, Chidera Okolie

Journal of International Women's Studies

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a phenomenon that has become embedded in human life, and this symbiotic relationship between technology and humanity is here to stay. One such use of AI is deepfakes. The use of AI for deepfakes is arguably one of the most controversial topics because it raises ethical issues. Deepfakes are images or recordings that have been convincingly altered and manipulated to misrepresent someone as doing or saying something that they did not actually do or say. These manipulations thrive in the political arena and recently in the pornography industry, in which women’s faces are masked onto other …

Bell Hooks And Online Feminism, Hazel T. Biana Mar 2023

Bell Hooks And Online Feminism, Hazel T. Biana

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist theorist and cultural critic bell hooks was known for calling out modern-day feminists for failing to take into consideration the plight of other non-privileged women. She intricately analyzed how various factors of oppression form a web, which contributes to the complexities of women’s marginalization. The vision of hooks, thus, is a revolutionary type of feminism which is inclusive and for everybody. This means that everyone, all persons of various races or classes, should become enlightened witnesses and be a part of the struggle towards eradicating what she refers to as White Capitalist Supremacist Patriarchy. Such vision, however, seems to …

Toward Inclusive Advancement: An Analysis Of Gender Equity In Kenya, Gloria Nyambura Kenyatta Mar 2023

Toward Inclusive Advancement: An Analysis Of Gender Equity In Kenya, Gloria Nyambura Kenyatta

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article assesses the notion of gender parity and its function towards inclusive advancement in the Kenyan context. Gender parity has been extensively acknowledged in the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, although its intended outcomes still need to be attained. Men and women have different needs, which should be harmonized for efforts geared towards achieving inclusive advancement. Both are entitled to equity in the advancement agenda. Through secondary research, this paper reviews the international, regional, and national frameworks on gender equity to which Kenya is a signatory. These frameworks are significant in supporting the country's efforts towards gender equity. The paper …

Feminism In Modern Japan: A Historical Review Of Japanese Women’S Issues On Gender, Polina Lukyantseva

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study primarily illustrates the evolution of the feminist movement in Japan by comparing two waves of the feminist movement. Furthermore, this paper examines the development of gender roles and gender bias in modern Japanese patriarchal society. It also illustrates and explains traditional roles, Japanese ideologies, the system of Fu-you (Jap. 扶養, Eng. dependent), and modern trends in contemporary Japan. In this study, the following qualitative research methods were applied. A thorough historical context analysis was done to comprehend the social dynamics, issues, and specifics of feminism in Japan, and the principle of historicism was used to illuminate and compare …

What Are The Attitudes Towards Changing Gender Roles Within The Saudi Family?, Rasis Alanazi, Munira Alhugail, Tagreed Almeshary

Journal of International Women's Studies

Saudi Vision 2030 was launched with a focus on three main themes: “a vibrant society,” “a thriving economy,” and “an ambitious nation” (2017). In order to realize these primary themes, more participation of women is required in the workforce. A number of legislative reforms have supported the entry of more women into the workforce, such as lifting the male guardian permission for work and travel, supporting programs for childcare, allowing women to drive cars, and ensuring women’s involvement in leadership positions. Saudi women are now working in defense, mining, construction, manufacturing, and retail among other sectors. As a result, women's …

Iranian Women's Movement: Political Opportunities And New Forces, Hamid Sajadi

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Iranian women's movement emerged and was sustained in an unprecedented way, although neither the movement's procedure nor the nature of the Iranian protesters' economic and social demands throughout the course of the previous ten years made its formation plausible. While unions have traditionally coordinated many Iranian protests, the present women's movement is non-union, has a national reach, and has been going strong for several months despite fierce government resistance. This study reviews the history and achievements of the women's protest movement in Iran since September 2022. In the past, women's activities have been severely constrained and suppressed by Iran's …

The Political Participation Of Women In Kenya, Gloria Nyambura Kenyatta Mar 2023

The Political Participation Of Women In Kenya, Gloria Nyambura Kenyatta

Journal of International Women's Studies

To tackle the historic marginalization of women in Kenya, the 2010 Constitution introduced reforms on the gender principle, the quota system, and decentralization to promote gender equality. Decentralization formed a localized political system that unlocked leadership positions to previously underprivileged sets of people like women in all the forty-seven devolved units. Worthy of note is that the elections of 2013 and 2017 had the highest number of women in Kenyan history both in the legislature and the executive branch; however, most government institutions did not attain the one-third gender rule, hence violating the Constitution. Achievement of gender equality in Kenya …

Ecofeminist Concerns And Subaltern Perspectives On ‘Third World’ Indigenous Women: A Study Of Selected Works Of Mahasweta Devi, Bholanath Das, Sahel Md Delabul Hossain

Journal of International Women's Studies

The lives of Aboriginals, as an indigenous form of a subaltern identity, have been less documented in narratives so far. Indigenous subaltern identity forms an alter-identity in which indigenous women’s identity is even more silenced in the social order of gender hierarchy. Maria Mies and Vandana Shiva in their book Ecofeminism locate the “Third World Woman” (in India) as a stakeholder of indigenous identity. The knowledge of Third World women in nurturing biodiversity drastically differs from both the Androcentric and Eurocentric models of bio-conservation. Indigenous women and the indigenous flora are both objects of genocidal violence, identity dissolution, and cultural …
