Rational Love: How Personality Types Can Influence Conflict Resolution, Rachel Beckmann, Sarah Solon
Rational Love: How Personality Types Can Influence Conflict Resolution, Rachel Beckmann, Sarah Solon
Research Days
Is love rational? Current literature tells us that personalities impact how an individual handles general conflict (Deventer et al., 2019; Geukes et al., 2019). Due to previous research, we now hypothesize that parties with dissimilar love languages and/or enneagram types may experience conflict more intensely than those similar. Love languages and enneagram types both help to explain human personality and interpersonal interactions. Personalities impact how an individual handles general conflict and the duration of any conflict (Deventer et al.,2019; Geukes et al.,2019). Conflict duration is prolonged with those who take conflict personally, believing that their personality is viewed negatively (Squires, …
Post Secondary Leadership: Promoting Leadership Development In Average Achieving Students, Deborah J. Clair
Post Secondary Leadership: Promoting Leadership Development In Average Achieving Students, Deborah J. Clair
Research Days
This proposed research seeks to explore the intersection of leadership and average-achieving high school students. Specifically, the study aims to shed light on the experiences of adults who were once perceived as average-achieving high school students but possessed innate talents and abilities that were overlooked and excluded from leadership opportunities during their time in high school. Despite facing deficit thinking by school administration due to their grades, these individuals went on to become successful leaders in their careers. While there have been anecdotal claims and media coverage of the success of average-achieving students, there has been limited formal research conducted …
From Space To The Streets: Leveraging Satellite Data For Air Pollution, Health, And Justice, Gaige Kerr
From Space To The Streets: Leveraging Satellite Data For Air Pollution, Health, And Justice, Gaige Kerr
Sustainability Seminar Series
Ambient air disproportionately affects marginalized and minoritized communities in the United States. Satellite remote sensing provides crucial data needed to assess air pollution at a high spatial resolution and further understand the drivers, extent, and impacts of this form of environmental injustice. I provide a few vignettes to highlight how recent advances in remote sensing can inform and improve our understanding of environment health. First, satellite measurements and datasets that incorporate satellite data demonstrate the inequitable distribution of traffic-related pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter and how disparities have changed during recent years, including during the COVID-19 …

Talk Debt To Me: An Applied Linguistics Approach To Exploring College Student Preferences For Student Loan Debt Letters, Zachary W. Taylor, Elizabeth A. Rainey, Chelseaia Charran, Gretchen Holthaus, Linda Eguiluz, Ada Horne, Myra Francisco, Karla Weber-Wandel
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Although student loan debt has been rigorously studied over the past several decades, scant research has investigated how institutions of higher education communicate debt to current and former student borrowers. As COVID-19 forced the United States Department of Education to cancel the Annual Student Loan Acknowledgement as part of a student’s signing of the master promissory note (MPN), there are no other mechanisms for students to be aware of their student loan debt beyond a debt letter from their institution or reviewing their National Student Loan Debt System (NSLDS) portal. This applied linguistics study surveyed 2,030 current student loan borrowers …

Constructing A Clear Definition Of Neotraditional Students And Illuminating Their Financial Aid, Academic, And Non-Academic Experiences And Outcomes In The 21st Century, Tuan D. Nguyen, Jenna W. Kramer
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Decades of research related to the experience of postsecondary students who are adults, work full-time, or have other life roles have not led to agreement in the field regarding who is a “nontraditional” college student. This study leverages nationally representative data to illuminate shifts in this student population in the 21st century and builds a picture of their demographics, financial aid receipt, and academic experiences. Our results suggest that, in order to capture the diversity of the 21st century students and ubiquity of students with multiple life roles, we need to carefully define this student population; the use …

Journal of Student Financial Aid
In this paper, we examine college graduates’ perceptions of entering student loan repayment and how they navigated this process. Findings highlight the importance of helping students make informed borrowing decisions, particularly as they begin repaying their student loan debt. Policy makers wishing to hold institutions accountable for keeping college affordable while enhancing financial aid policy will gain further insight.

De-Class-Ifying Microtargeted Political Advertising, Jacob Kovacs-Goodman
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
In contemporary American politics, Big Tech companies provide sophisticated advertising interfaces that enable anyone to target specific voters by demographic. These companies defend their tools as “neutral” to evade culpability for discriminatory ads. Yet, such microtargeted advertising presents a significant threat to democracy. This Article advances a possible two-pronged solution to bar online platforms from targeting political ads based on a user’s protected class. First, this Article promotes a largely unexplored tactic: extending Title II of the Civil Rights Act into the digital space so that behavior that would be impermissibly discriminatory offline is not permitted online. Second, this Article …

A Government Of Laws And Not Of Men: Why Justice Brandeis Was Right To Assume Congress Can Restrain The President's Removal Power, Danielle Rosenblum
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
Since the Founding, the extent of the president’s power to remove executive officials from office remains unsettled. While the Appointments Clause in Article II, Section 2 empowers Congress to participate in the hiring of executive officials, the United States Constitution’s text is silent on whether Congress can limit the president’s ability to fire such employees. The debate on the proper scope of the president’s removal power is significant because it serves as a proxy for a larger constitutional question: whether constraints on presidential power advance or sit in tension with democracy. This Article argues that Justice Brandeis was right to …
A Modern-Day 3/5 Compromise: The Case For Finding Prison Gerrymandering Unconstitutional Under The Thirteenth Amendment, Shana Iden
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
Vestiges of slavery and systemic disenfranchisement of people of color persist in the United States. One of these remnants is the practice of prison gerrymandering, which occurs when government officials count incarcerated individuals as part of the population of the prison’s location rather than the individual’s home district. This Article argues that prison gerrymandering functions as a badge of slavery that should be prohibited under the Thirteenth Amendment.
First, this Article provides background on prison gerrymandering and charts its impact through history, particularly on Black communities. Moreover, this Article analyzes how litigation under the Fourteenth Amendment has not yielded meaningful …
A Constitutional Right To Early Voting, David Schultz
A Constitutional Right To Early Voting, David Schultz
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
Voting is a cost-benefit decision. Individuals are more likely to vote if the benefits of doing so outweigh the disadvantages. With early voting laws eased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 election demonstrated that turnout increases when elected officials reduce voting costs. Despite all the benefits of early voting, there is no constitutional right, and it remains a privilege that state legislatures can revoke at will.
Since the 2020 election, state legislatures have proposed—and enacted—hundreds of bills to change voting rules. But with the intense partisan disagreement over voting, coupled with political polarization reaching an apex, these acts restricting …
The Looming Threat Of The Independent State Legislature Theory And The Erosion Of The Voting Rights Act: It Is Time To Enshrine The Right To Vote, Javon Davis
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
Over the last decade, the emergence of an imperial United States Supreme Court—currently armed with the largest conservative majority since the 1930s—has radically reshaped federal voting rights protections. During the litigation surrounding the 2020 election, however, an obscure threat reemerged. The fringe independent state legislature (“ISL”) theory is a potentially revolutionary constitutional theory that could lead to widespread voter disenfranchisement. Proponents of the theory, including Supreme Court Justices, posit, in part, that the United States Constitution vests state legislatures with plenary power to construct rules for federal elections—unbound by state constitutions and free from state judicial review.
Once a refuge …
Moore V. Harper And The Consequential Effects Of The Independent State Legislature Theory, Chase Cooper
Moore V. Harper And The Consequential Effects Of The Independent State Legislature Theory, Chase Cooper
Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum
In December 2022, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Moore v. Harper. The case addresses whether the North Carolina Supreme Court possesses the authority to strike down a redistricting map drawn by the state legislature. Petitioners contend that the state legislature has no such authority under the United States Constitution, citing a novel interpretation of the Elections Clause known as the “independent state legislature” (“ISL”) theory. The ISL theory is not a unified theory, but rather a constellation of related doctrinal positions that revolve around a core precept: ordinary governing principles by which state courts review …

The gloss properties can be improved by repeated additions of carbides or ceramic materials, where in the current research, Nano-zirconia was mixed as a support material for the system (Ni-3%SiC) and the reinforcement percentages were (0,3,6,9,12)%. The process of manufacturing the samples was carried out by the powder method. Where the support and foundation materials were mixed by the volumetric method. The resulting samples were heat treated at 900°C for two hours, after that the scanning electron microscope was studied to find out the topography of the surface formed, and it was found that the best ratio that gives a …

Athletic Trainers Value The Intrinsic Rewards Of Specialty Certifications More Than Barriers And Extrinsic Rewards, Michael B. Hudson, Eva M. Frank, Taylor Harper, Lyndsey Comer, Kelsey Lamont
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Health care professionals may earn specialty certifications to recognize their advanced knowledge and skills. Athletic training has implemented specialties; however, it is unclear what athletic trainers (ATs) know and perceive about specialty certifications. We developed a survey to examine the following issues: (1) analyze what ATs know about specialty certifications; (2) rank the rewards and barriers ATs perceive to be associated with earning/pursuing specialty certifications; and (3) examine differences in these findings based on ATs state practice acts being more restrictive or less restrictive. Method: We utilized a nonequivalent group, cross-sectional survey design and collected data for one month …

The "heritage business preservation eco-system" that is Whole Love Kyoto and Kyoto Traditional Culture Innovation Laboratory, is one such case.
