Epidemiology and Biostatistics Publications
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the impact of mandatory school nutrition policy on diet quality of Canadian school children using a quasi-experimental study design.
METHODS: Using 24-h dietary recall data from the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) Cycle 2.2 and 2015 CCHS - Nutrition, we constructed the Diet Quality Index (DQI). We used multivariable difference-in-differences regressions to quantify the DQI scores associated with school nutrition policy. We conducted stratified analyses by sex, school grade, household income, and food security status to gain additional insights into the impact of nutrition policy.
RESULTS: We found that mandatory school nutrition policy was associated with …

The GPU performance of the adaptive wave propagation algorithm is critical to its effectiveness in simulating wave propagation in complex media. This algorithm employs adaptive mesh refinement to improve resolution in areas where the wavefield is changing rapidly. The algorithm's performance is significantly improved by the use of graphics processing units (GPUs), which offer faster computation times than traditional central processing units (CPUs). According to the studies in this poster, GPU acceleration of the adaptive wave propagation algorithm provides significant improvements in simulation speed and scalability, as seen in the simulated examples: scalar advection, shallow water equations, euler, and acoustics. …

Dataset For Exciton Delocalization And Scaffold Stability In Bridged Nucleotide-Substituted, Dna Duplex-Templated Cyanine Aggregates, Simon K. Roy, William B. Knowlton
Quantum DNA Research Group Data
Molecular excitons play a foundational role in chromophore aggregates found in light-harvesting systems and offer potential applications in engineered excitonic systems. Controlled aggregation of chromophores to promote exciton delocalization has been achieved by covalently tethering chromophores to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) scaffolds. Although many studies have documented changes in the optical properties of chromophores upon aggregation using DNA scaffolds, more limited work has investigated how structural modifications of DNA via bridged nucleotides and chromophore covalent attachment impact scaffold stability as well as the configuration and optical behavior of attached aggregates. Here we investigated the impact of two types of bridged nucleotides, …

HPD Articles
Introduction: We aimed to examine the effect of resistance training rest interval length on chronic changes of systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). Methods: 27 normotensive young adults were randomly assigned to one of three rest interval length groups: 30-sec, 90-sec, or 150-sec. Baseline and post-training SBP and DBP measurements were obtained. Participants trained and logged their sessions in a smartphone application three times per week for 8 weeks. They also measured their blood pressure weekly with a home kit. Changes in SBP and DBP between the three groups were tested using a mixed model 3 x 2 ANOVA …

Diverse Portfolios: Investing In Tributaries For Restoration Of Large River Fishes In The Anthropocene, Kristen L. Bouska, Brian D. Healy, Michael J. Moore, Corey G. Dunn, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Rehabilitation of large Anthropocene rivers requires engagement of diverse stakeholders across a broad range of sociopolitical boundaries. Competing objectives often constrain options for ecological restoration of large rivers whereas fewer competing objectives may exist in a subset of tributaries. Further, tributaries contribute toward building a “portfolio” of river ecosystem assets through physical and biological processes that may present opportunities to enhance the resilience of large river fishes. Our goal is to review roles of tributaries in enhancing mainstem large river fish populations. We present case histories from two greatly altered and distinct large-river tributary systems that highlight how tributaries contribute …

One Surface Borehole With Multi-Usage Gas Drainage Key Technology For Abandoned Well And Its Application, Fu Junhui
Coal Geology & Exploration
Gas drainage from mining area could be realized through the reconstruction and reuse of abandoned surface gas wells in the coal mine area , which has multiple economic and environmental benefits such as ensuring the safe production of mining, the effective utilization of gas resources, and reducing the pressure of gas escape on the environment. In view of this purpose, the idea of “one surface borehole with multi-usage” gas drainage technology for abandoned wells was proposed based on the characteristics of the surface borehole and the abandoned wells in the mining area. By analyzing the conditions of the mining technology, …

A New Model Of Surface And Underground Integrated Three-Dimensional Prevention And Control Of Rock Burst In Binchang Mining Area, Wu Xueming, Ma Xiaohui, Lyu Dazhao, Zheng Kaige, Wang Dongjie
Coal Geology & Exploration
With the continuous increase of coal mining intensity, the mine gradually moves to the deep, bringing about increasingly serious rock burst hazard. The deep rock burst mines often have one or more layers of hard and thick rock strata. These hard roofs are thick and strong integrity. When they suddenly rupture, they can release a large amount of elastic energies, which can easily to cause rock burst accidents and seriously restrict the safety of mine production. Herein, appropriate treatment measures were put forward for the special situation of deep burial depth of coal seam and general presence of many kinds …

Influencing Mechanism Of Rock Thermal Resistance On Convective Heat Transfer Of Fracture, Wang Yaning, Lu Chuan, Wang Guiling
Coal Geology & Exploration
The convective heat transfer characteristics between high temperature rocks and fluids in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) have been an important fundamental element of research on Hot Dry Rock (HDR). The thermal resistance of rock has an important influence on the convective heat transfer characteristics of fracture. In order to study its specific influence, two research methods, i.e., the theoretical analysis and the numerical simulation, were used in combination to study the heat transfer law between two parallel smooth flat plates by discussing the analytical solution and establishing the numerical model. The results show that the local Nusselt number Nux …

Development Of Storage Equipment Of Continuous Cable Pipe For Borehole Rescue, Gao Ke, Niu Xin, Zhao Yan, Qin Xiaolin, Lyu Xiaoshu, Xie Xiaobo
Coal Geology & Exploration
The double-bit bionic self-balancing continuous drilling technology has the advantages including requiring no drilling rig, high drilling speed and slight disturbance to the borehole wall. It is one of the key potential technologies for constructing the security and rescue passages against mine disasters. In this technology, as there are passages for power supply, signal, chip removal and other aspects that are built in the continuous cable pipe, it is required that there shall be no such interference, extrusion or arrangement of dynamic/static conductive electric conduction link as in using the existing drum hoist to store continuous pipes during storage. Therefore, …

Coal Geology & Exploration
In the tripping operation of large-diameter rescue well construction, the drill pipe conveying device used for large-diameter drilling tool transportation and drill string connection. In view of the problem that it is difficult to quickly and accurately lift the drill pipe to the angle of power head for make-up due to its easy vibration in the process of positioning, the structural characteristics and working principle of the drill pipe conveying device were analyzed at first. The kinematic model for the lifting of drill pipe was deduced with the structural relationship, obtaining the mapping relationship in the motion law of the …

The Broad Reach Of Multivariable Thinking, Deanna Kuhn, Anahid Modrek
College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers
Simple explanations are very often inadequate and can encourage faulty inferences. We examined college students’ explanations regarding illegal immigration to determine the prevalence of single-factor explanations. The form of students’ explanations was predicted by their responses on a simple three-item forced-choice multivariable causal reasoning task in which they selected the strongest evidence against a causal claim. In a further qualitative investigation of explanations by a sample of community adults, we identified positive features among those who scored high on this multivariable causal reasoning task. We consider limitations of single-factor reasoning and means of encouraging more comprehensive explanations to support claims.

Study On The Time Law Of Water-Rock Interaction In Coal Mine Groundwater Reservoir, Zhang Kai, Liu Shuyu, Cao Zhiguo, Gao Ju, Chen Xiangyu, Yan Jiayu
Coal Geology & Exploration
The retention time of mine water in the coal mine underground reservoir will affect the ion concentration of effluent, but the time law of water-rock interaction during operation of the reservoir is still unclear. In order to reveal the occurrence type and intensity of water-rock interaction in different operation stages of coal mine underground reservoir, two groups of static simulation tests of water-rock interaction were designed based on the test and analysis on-site samples, namely the fine sandstone-mine water (S-K) and mudstone-mine water (N-K). The types of water-rock interaction were analyzed from two aspects: the change of rock composition and …

Hardware Trojan Detection In Chips By Removing Dependencies Between Features In Machine Learning, Alfred Moussa, Nader Rafla
Research Computing Days 2023
Globally, there has been an increase in demand for System on Chip (SoC) applications, active medical implants, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. However, due to challenges in the global supply chain, the design, fabrication, and testing of Integrated Circuits are often outsourced to untrusted third-party entities around the world rather than a single trusted entity. This situation presents an opportunity for adversaries to compromise the device's integrity, performance, and functionality by inserting malicious modifications known as Hardware Trojans (HTs) into the original design. HTs can also create a "backdoor" in the system for malicious alterations.

Convection Modeling Of Ice-Ocean Interaction, Yao Gahounzo, Michal Kopera
Convection Modeling Of Ice-Ocean Interaction, Yao Gahounzo, Michal Kopera
Research Computing Days 2023
Ice-ocean interaction is an essential component of the Earth's climate system and is one of the key challenges in climate modeling. It has profound consequences for the ocean, such as transforming the water masses through the melting or freezing of ice. The present-day climate models cannot satisfactorily resolve the fine-scale process at an ice face, especially the plume of an order of 10 m that rises at the ice face. We investigate the melting and the plume when vertical ice dissolves into seawater through convection under Antarctic Ocean conditions using the Non-hydrostatic Unified Model of the Ocean (NUMO), a high-resolution …

Integrating Empirical Orthogonal Functions (Eofs) Into Machine Learning Model, Kachinga Silwimba
Research Computing Days 2023
The representation of soil moisture in Earth System Models, like the Community Earth System Model (CESM), is an essential facet in modeling the response of the Earth System to climate change. Since their inception, land models have grown to represent critical processes like carbon cycling, ecosystem dynamics, terrestrial hydrology, and agriculture. They serve as a lower boundary condition for atmospheric general circulation models. With increasing process representation, they are computationally expensive. Hydrologists and modelers use several parameterization schemes to describe the water and energy balance. However, this is regarded as computationally expensive. Alternative tools called emulators (e.g., machine learning and …
