Lack of independent biomarkers is very much evident in NAFLD. Early detection of NAFLD is difficult due to the absence of specific diagnostic and prognostic markers and clinical symptoms. We retrospectively collected the information of patients hospitalised with NAFLD diagnosis and metabolic syndrome during 2019-2020 using the tertiary care hospital inpatient sample database and evaluated the changes in their serum homocysteine levels. We found that 59.063% of NAFLD in the male population and 41.667% of NAFLD in the female population had increased serum homocysteine. This shows that elevated serum homocysteine can act as a potential biomarker for NAFLD.

Biofeedback forms an integral part of Complementary and Alternate Medicine (CAM). It acts as a self-regulation technique through which individuals voluntarily learn to control what they believe are involuntary body processes. It records physiological signals using sensors and converts them into meaningful visual and auditory cues that provide feedback about physiological responses through a computer screen. It has been widely used as an intervention tool since the time of its development. The utility and effectiveness of biofeedback are not only restricted to illness but also to enhancing health and well-being. The biofeedback mechanism relies on two primary principles: Psychophysiological Mechanism …

Fostering Connection Through Ecological Identity: Expanding Colonial Concepts Of Outdoor Adventures, Elizabeth Farrell
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
How can I foster ecological identity? Defining ecological identity as a sense of awareness of how one relates with nature, and identity as an ecological being that is nature, this action research project will explore the ways in which people connect to the natural world through everyday moments. In understanding that the foundations, practices, and industry messaging of the outdoors can be exclusive and perpetuate systems of oppression, I am seeking to expand the notion of what nature connection can be. The hope is to create more accessible, inclusive, and equitable outdoor education practices. Research design included a survey and …

The Use Of Arguments About Myths And Stereotypes To Appeal Sexual Assault Convictions In Canada, Ryan Andrew Quinn
The Use Of Arguments About Myths And Stereotypes To Appeal Sexual Assault Convictions In Canada, Ryan Andrew Quinn
LLM Theses
Canadian defence counsel have recently begun appealing sexual assault convictions by arguing that a trial judge applied myths and stereotypes (M&S) against the accused. This phenomenon is surprising because this country’s focus on M&S in sexual assault law has almost exclusively concerned improper assumptions that operate against the complainant and the Crown and risk producing perverse acquittals. This thesis reviews this new defence strategy with reference to three decades of appellate case law and scholarship. It advances definitions of M&S as well as principles for understanding the evidentiary effects of their recognition as such, and it categorizes various defence attempts …

Tokenized Finance And Monetary Law: The Evolving Role Of The Central Bank In The Age Of Digital Currency, Odunayo Emmanuel Olowookere
LLM Theses
This thesis attempts to examine the motivations of the central bank and the state in the adoption of a sovereign-backed Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). We sought to answer the question- of what central bank roles will be most affected by the adoption of a sovereign-backed digital currency. Since any motivations for the adoption of this new form of currency are sure to reflect in its eventual design, we argue that without the intervention of the law at this crucial design stage, any such currency is very likely to be unfavorable to the money users. We justify this by investigating …

A Survey Of Issues In The Recruitment, Hiring And Retention Of Law Enforcement Officers : Investigating The Rural-Urban Divide, Morgan Steele, Tamara Lynn, Abigail Hayes
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
The continuing crises of the COVID-19 pandemic and issues surrounding disparate policing practices have illuminated an underlying issue facing law enforcement agencies: how to recruit, hire, and retain qualified officers. Using survey data from over 200 rural and urban agencies across three states, this article explores the various issues agencies have with recruitment and retention, paying particular attention to the apparent differences between agency type and size, as well as the extent of urbanization in the jurisdiction. The implications of and potential policy solutions to these issues are then discussed.

Rodent feces can contain dangerous human microbial pathogens that are a serious health hazard to the human population. Currently, there is no known rapid assay to detect rodent fecal contamination. In this study, a rapid PCR-based mitochondrial DNA primer pair was constructed as it enabled the detection of rodent fecal pollution in environmental samples. Environmental samples were all tested using end-point PCR after filtration and then extraction of DNA using the DNeasy Powersoil pro kit. These primers were designed to specifically detect rodent feces that belong to the Rattus Sp. taxonomic group. Rodent samples from various counties in Georgia were …

Predicting Thermoelectric Power Factor Of Bismuth Telluride During Laser Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing, Ankita Agarwal, Tanvi Banerjee, Joy Gockel, Saniya Leblanc, Joe Walker, John Middendorf
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
An additive manufacturing (AM) process, like laser powder bed fusion, allows for the fabrication of objects by spreading and melting powder in layers until a freeform part shape is created. In order to improve the properties of the material involved in the AM process, it is important to predict the material characterization property as a function of the processing conditions. In thermoelectric materials, the power factor is a measure of how efficiently the material can convert heat to electricity. While earlier works have predicted the material characterization properties of different thermoelectric materials using various techniques, implementation of machine learning models …

Damped Oscillating Phosphoryl Transfer Reaction In The Cyanobacterial Circadian Clock, Hye In Jang, Pyonghwa Kim, Yongick Kim
Chemistry Faculty Research
Most organisms have circadian clocks to ensure the metabolic cycle to resonate with the rhythmic environmental changes without “damping,” or losing robustness. Cyanobacteria is the oldest and simplest form of life that is known to harbor this biological intricacy. Its KaiABC-based central oscillator proteins can be reconstituted inside a test tube, and the post-translational modification cycle occurs with 24 h periodicity. KaiC’s two major phosphorylation sites, Ser-431 and Thr-432, become phosphorylated and dephosphorylated by interacting with KaiA and KaiB, respectively. Here, we mutate Thr-432 into Ser to find the oscillatory phosphoryl transfer reaction damps. Previously, this mutant KaiC was reported …

The Beauty Of Computational Drug Design, Gabriel Miles
The Beauty Of Computational Drug Design, Gabriel Miles
Research Computing Days 2023
Breast cancer cells are spread to new locations in the body via metastasis. Inflammatory cytokines play an important role in mediating this process, and thus provide a promising target for preventive research. Our research focuses around testing and synthesizing new small molecule inhibitors (SMIs) to inhibit a specific inflammatory cytokine in the breast cancer metastasis. An important part of drug discovery is the in silico drug screening via molecular dynamics simulations. Leveraging the computational resources on campus we can estimate the binding affinity of a drug candidate to an inflammatory cytokine, helping identify the most promising candidates for synthesis and …

Faculty Research 2023
Monocytes can differentiate into macrophages (Mo-Macs) or dendritic cells (Mo-DCs). The cytokine granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) induces the differentiation of monocytes into Mo-Macs, while the combination of GM-CSF/interleukin (IL)-4 is widely used to generate Mo-DCs for clinical applications and to study human DC biology. Here, we report that pharmacological inhibition of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) in the presence of GM-CSF and the absence of IL-4 induces monocyte differentiation into Mo-DCs. Remarkably, we find that simultaneous inhibition of PPARγ and the nutrient sensor mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) induces the differentiation of Mo-DCs with stronger …

Romantic And Victorian Era: Fashion Reimagined, Sara E. Pacheco
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
This venture was about reimaginations of the Romantic and Victorian era fashion through the person of Audrey Hepburn, a famous 1960’s Movie star. The Romantic and Victorian eras were chosen because of their similarities and the beauty of those eras in expressing femininity for women. The colors served as a main source of inspiration because they conveyed a feminine vintage feel for the garments. Additionally, inspiration was drawn from the patterns and textures of fabric, especially silk textiles whose satin finish complemented the shiny, smooth, and silky feel of the fabrics. The reimagined fashion images on display illustrate how a …
