Problem: Newborn infants were once bathed only 2-4 hours after birth. The rate at which newborns experienced hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and a difficulty with exclusive breastfeeding was once much higher than it is today.

Methods: This project was a meta-analysis of multiple clinical trials regarding delayed infant bathing. Three main studies that implemented a 24 hour or later bathing program were chosen and reviewed to assess for trends in hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and the exclusive breastfeeding rates of newborns.

Results: In each study reviewed, the rates of hypoglycemia and hypothermia decreased while the rates of exclusive breastfeeding increased.

Implications: By delaying newborn …

The Benefits And Use Of Intranasal Versed (Midazolam) In Pediatric Patients Requiring Procedural Sedation And Seizure Cessation In The Emergency Department, Coleman Austin, Madison Simmons

Scholars Week

Pediatric emergency department’s across the country have developed specific methods for treating injuries and illnesses in the pediatric population. However, many adult emergency departments that treat pediatric patients have outdated methods for treating children who come through their doors. A great example of this would be the current standard of care for pediatric patients who are in need of some form of sedation for treatment. Many adult emergency departments currently will use moderate to deep sedation techniques for treatment that should typically only require light sedation, like for lacerations and imaging scans. After lots of research, it seems that where …

What Teacher Needs To Know About Stem-Nonfiction, Simranjeet Kaur

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

What educators need to know about STEM nonfiction is covered in this presentation. Teaching subject like maths, science, technology, and engineering isn’t always mean going to lab or completing written worksheets. Different non-fiction book types are preferred by different children, and some students are better suited to specific subjects than others. Unlike traditional non-fiction, there isn't just one set of guidelines for selecting books for learners. Therefore, understanding the categories of STEM nonfiction can help educators with exploring science, technology, engineering, and maths.

Teaching Music Theory And History With Collaborative Awareness, Karin Thompson, Max Keller

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

The disciplines of music history and music theory are integrally linked: One cannot be studied without the other. Courses in these disciplines are at the core of many undergraduate music degree programs, and upon completing a graduate degree in music at Andrews University, students are expected to demonstrate the ability to synthesize their knowledge in both disciplines. The path towards successfully teaching these skills of synthesis involves awareness and collaboration between teachers in both disciplines, and it involves active inclusion of students’ own choices and goals in the music they study.

P.L.A.Y., Marco Vinicio Ruppel

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

When it comes to learning in a classroom, teachers always expect students to just sit and listen. However, there are ways to be able to teach students while being active through play and other activities. When you have little kids in your classroom, sure you want them to sit and learn, but there are times when you need to have them move around and play. That is because since they are so little, their attention span is not that long.

Exploring The Connection Between Literature And Physical Education, Andrew Potts Mar 2023

Exploring The Connection Between Literature And Physical Education, Andrew Potts

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

In many school settings, physical education and literature are thought to not be connected in any way. However, it can be argued that there is indeed a connection between these two seemingly unrelated subjects. Making a concerted effort to include physical movement and learning within core classroom subjects, including literacy, can help students understand that different areas of learning can be introduced and intertwined in other subjects to create a more wholesome and well-rounded learning experience for them.

Strategies For Teaching Reading In High School Music Classes, Megan Case

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

When you think of subjects that benefit from literacy, music may not be the first one that comes to mind. While "reading" music usually refers to interpreting the notes and symbols on the page being able to read texts about music can give students context and background they wouldn't otherwise have. This enables them to connect to the music on a deeper and more meaningful level. This project describes just a few of the ways increasing literacy in the field of music enhances the quality of education students receive

Secular/Non-Religious Education Vs. Christian/Religious Education, Bianka Rinko Mar 2023

Secular/Non-Religious Education Vs. Christian/Religious Education, Bianka Rinko

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

This poster briefly presents the contradiction between secular/non-religious education and christian/religious education. It shows the reasoning behind secular education leaving out religion in school and also the reasoning behind Christian education including religion in school.

Furthermore, the poster proves that Christian education shapes the students' moral decisions and later family/relational choices in a much better way than secular education. This research taught me that, as Christian Adventist educators, we have the privilege and the responsibility to share with students such significant principles from the Bible which can give a good direction to their lives.

Interdisciplinary Diffusion Lab, Sable Rosana Canales, Chloe Gaban Mar 2023

Interdisciplinary Diffusion Lab, Sable Rosana Canales, Chloe Gaban

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

Diffusion is a principle in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Students can model the rate of diffusion based on particle size by contrasting blue and yellow dyes. Two petri dishes containing agar-agar receive a drop of dye at the center. The radius of expansion is recorded over time and variance increases linearly with time. Diffusion constants vary by particle size, allowing for a size ratio comparison between blue and yellow dyes. Relating the data to cells, students predict that smaller molecules diffuse into living cells, whereas larger molecules need some assistance from protein channels as in facilitated diffusion.

Call Audio Quality Determination And Root Cause Analysis Using Machine Learning, Yu Liu, Jack Chan, Qin Zhang, Xiantao Sun

Defensive Publications Series

Accurate assessment and categorization of real-world audio quality in a call, e.g., a call over VoLTE/VoNR, is essential to provide a satisfactory call experience. However, current techniques to determine call quality do not accurately categorize the audio quality. Also, there are no techniques to determine the root cause of poor audio quality or to identify potential solutions. This disclosure describes the use of machine learning clustering techniques to cluster audio metrics and using the obtained clusters to generate a root cause table. Further, a classifier is trained to determine whether an ongoing call has unsatisfactory audio quality. The quality can …
