Fintech Regulation In The Catawba Digital Economic Zone, Tom W. Bell Apr 2023

Fintech Regulation In The Catawba Digital Economic Zone, Tom W. Bell

Chapman Law Review

The Catawba Digital Economic Zone (“CDEZ”) achieved a number of firsts when it launched in late 2022: the world’s first entirely virtual special jurisdiction devoted to financial services using technologies like blockchains, cryptocurrencies, digital assets, and artificial intelligence (fintech); the first time that a Native American tribe has claimed exclusive jurisdiction over a broad field of commerce; and the first special jurisdiction in the United States to offer its own civil laws and legal system. If all proceeds as planned, the Zone will soon also host the first Native American public bank in the United States. These firsts follow naturally …

The Historical Context Of Stock Settlement And Blockchain, George S. Geis Apr 2023

The Historical Context Of Stock Settlement And Blockchain, George S. Geis

Chapman Law Review

"n 1968, the U.S. stock market collapsed. 1 It did not flatline, of course, but major markets closed every Wednesday in an event now known as the 'Wall Street Paperwork Crisis.' 2 This seizure was not caused by problems at the front end of a trade; brokers and dealers could easily keep up with the various client orders to buy or sell stock. Rather, the difficulties arose from back-end bottlenecks that occurred during the clearing and settlement process—the method by which a share of stock is transferred from seller to buyer. 3 This two-step process is necessary because the initial …

Tech layoffs are rising daily, with about 150,000 among the world's largest technology companies in recent months. The current economic-employment turbulence is an opportunity for higher education institutions to turn around the conversation of the college cliff that is fast approaching. The poster presents a linear discriminant analysis to analyze the difference between unemployment data (USA versus World) during the last recession (2009). Based on those findings, we use the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and Jensen's Alpha to uncover any abnormal returns (or excess unemployment) to determine whether there is an additional opportunity to recruit individuals pursuing advanced degrees. …

Transnational Identities In National Politics: The Spd And The German Peace Movements, 1921 - 1966, Shelley E. Rose Apr 2023

Transnational Identities In National Politics: The Spd And The German Peace Movements, 1921 - 1966, Shelley E. Rose

MSL Academic Endeavors eBooks

Transnational Identities in National Politics problematizes the relationship between the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) and pacifists on the non-Communist Left between 1921 and 1966. It breaks from traditional master narratives by using gender, transnational, and biographical analysis to reveal understudied continuities and shifting political spaces in German politics. Rose explores the foundations of “masculine” characterizations of party politics and tensions created by common perceptions that ethical pacifism was “feminine.” Additionally, her analysis reveals that although the SPD maintained its reputation as a “peace party,” SPD leaders‘ conception of peace changed over time. It was a winner of Binghamton University …

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Interventions for animal lifespan extension like caloric restriction (CR) have identified physiologic and biochemical pathways related to hunger and energy-sensing status as possible contributors, but mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Prior studies using ghrelin agonists show greater food intake but no effect on lifespan in rodent models. This experiment in male C57BL/6J mice tested the influence of ghrelin agonism for perceived hunger, in the absence of CR, on longevity. Mice aged 4 weeks were allowed to acclimate for 2 weeks prior to being assigned (N = 60/group). Prior to lights off daily (12:12 cycle), animals were fed a ghrelin …

Structural Integrity Assessment Of Shell And Tube Heat Exchanger Tube-To-Tubesheet Joints Fabricated Using Conventional And Nonconventional Manufacturing Processes, Dinu Thomas Thekkuden Apr 2023

Structural Integrity Assessment Of Shell And Tube Heat Exchanger Tube-To-Tubesheet Joints Fabricated Using Conventional And Nonconventional Manufacturing Processes, Dinu Thomas Thekkuden

Dissertations

Tubes and tubesheets, integral components of shell and tube heat exchangers, have an important role in the functioning of the heat transfer between the tube-side and shell-side fluids. Tube-to-tubesheet joints act as a barrier to prevent the mixing of the transfer fluids in addition to aiding the structural rigidity of the shell and tube heat exchanger. Tube expansion process and welding are the manufacturing processes used for fabricating structurally rigid tube-to-tubesheet joints. Many instances of tube-totubesheet joint failures leading to the complete collapse of the heat exchangers demand attention to assessing the mechanical and metallurgical characteristics of tube-totubesheet joints fabricated …

Capturing Maximum Photovoltaic Power With Machine Learning: Maximum Current Prediction, Mppt Methodology, And Adjustable Ml-Based Controller, Zahi Mohamed Mohamed Apr 2023

Capturing Maximum Photovoltaic Power With Machine Learning: Maximum Current Prediction, Mppt Methodology, And Adjustable Ml-Based Controller, Zahi Mohamed Mohamed

Dissertations

The primary aim of this doctoral thesis is to examine the potential application of machine learning (ML) in optimizing Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and devising a flexible ML-based controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The lack of MPPT mechanisms leads to fixed voltage and current points for PV modules, resulting in substantial power loss when environmental conditions vary. The limitations of conventional and enhanced MPPT methods, as well as finding an alternative controller to classical Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, have spurred the search for substitute approaches to maximize PV power. To address these limitations, this thesis proposes using ensemble ML techniques, …

The Move Toward An Indigenous Virgin Islands Jurisprudence: Banks In Its Second Decade, Kristen David Adams Apr 2023

The Move Toward An Indigenous Virgin Islands Jurisprudence: Banks In Its Second Decade, Kristen David Adams

Fordham Law Review

In 2011, the Supreme Court of the U.S. Virgin Islands decided Banks v. International Rental & Leasing Corp. and, with that decision, introduced a new era in Virgin Islands jurisprudence that embraced a much more active role for Virgin Islands courts and a correspondingly diminished role for the American Law Institute’s restatements. This Essay examines what I will call “second-generation” decisions referencing Banks with the goal of determining whether Banks and its progeny have met, or are at least in the process of meeting, “the goal of establishing ‘an indigenous Virgin Islands jurisprudence’” set by the Banks court. Ultimately, this …

Independent Contractors & Noncompetition Covenants: A Modified Approach, Matthew J. Sandor Apr 2023

Independent Contractors & Noncompetition Covenants: A Modified Approach, Matthew J. Sandor

Fordham Law Review

This Note examines the way in which noncompetition covenants should be applied to independent contractors. An increasing portion of the American labor force is now employed outside the traditional employer-employee context. Today, nearly sixty million American workers are categorized as independent contractors, with many subject to noncompetition covenants that restrict their ability to participate in the labor market freely. In response to this dramatic change, state courts and legislatures have used a variety of approaches in enforcing noncompetes in the independent contractor context. These approaches run the gamut, with some states liberally construing noncompetes against independent contractors while others have …

Looks Matter On Social Media: How Should Courts Determine Whether A Public Official Operates Their Social Media Account Under Color Of State Law?, John B. Tsimis

Fordham Law Review

The widespread use of social media has presented a novel legal landscape for the application of constitutionally protected rights—particularly the First Amendment’s protection of free speech. The First Amendment prohibits the government from excluding citizens from a public forum on the basis of their viewpoints. Public officials acting under color of state law similarly may not use the authority of their offices to deprive citizens of their First Amendment rights.

However, the application of this protection in the context of social media has been inconsistent across federal circuit courts. Although these courts agree that viewpoint discrimination by the government on …

Supporting Novices Author Audio Descriptions Via Automatic Feedback, Rosiana Natalie, Joshua Shi-Hao Tseng, Hernisa Kacorri, Kotaro Hara

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Audio descriptions (AD) make videos accessible to those who cannot see them. But many videos lack AD and remain inaccessible as traditional approaches involve expensive professional production. We aim to lower production costs by involving novices in this process. We present an AD authoring system that supports novices to write scene descriptions (SD)—textual descriptions of video scenes—and convert them into AD via text-to-speech. The system combines video scene recognition and natural language processing to review novice-written SD and feeds back what to mention automatically. To assess the effectiveness of this automatic feedback in supporting novices, we recruited 60 participants to …

Parsing-Conditioned Anime Translation: A New Dataset And Method, Zhansheng Li, Yangyang Xu, Nanxuan Zhao, Yang Zhou, Yongtuo Liu, Dahua Lin, Shengfeng He Apr 2023

Parsing-Conditioned Anime Translation: A New Dataset And Method, Zhansheng Li, Yangyang Xu, Nanxuan Zhao, Yang Zhou, Yongtuo Liu, Dahua Lin, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anime is an abstract art form that is substantially different from the human portrait, leading to a challenging misaligned image translation problem that is beyond the capability of existing methods. This can be boiled down to a highly ambiguous unconstrained translation between two domains. To this end, we design a new anime translation framework by deriving the prior knowledge of a pre-Trained StyleGAN model. We introduce disentangled encoders to separately embed structure and appearance information into the same latent code, governed by four tailored losses. Moreover, we develop a FaceBank aggregation method that leverages the generated data of the StyleGAN, …

Reference-Based Screentone Transfer Via Pattern Correspondence And Regularization, Zhansheng Li, Nanxuan Zhao, Zongwei Wu, Yihua Dai, Junle Wang, Yanqing Jing, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Adding screentone to initial line drawings is a crucial step for manga generation, but is a tedious and human-laborious task. In this work, we propose a novel data-driven method aiming to transfer the screentone pattern from a reference manga image. This not only ensures the quality, but also adds controllability to the generated manga results. The reference-based screentone translation task imposes several unique challenges. Since manga image often contains multiple screentone patterns interweaved with line drawing, as an abstract art, this makes it even more difficult to extract disentangled style code from the reference. Also, finding correspondence for mapping between …

Socially assistive robots are increasingly being explored to improve the engagement of older adults and people with disability in health and well-being-related exercises. However, even if people have various physical conditions, most prior work on social robot exercise coaching systems has utilized generic, predefined feedback. The deployment of these systems still remains a challenge. In this paper, we present our work of iteratively engaging therapists and post-stroke survivors to design, develop, and evaluate a social robot exercise coaching system for personalized rehabilitation. Through interviews with therapists, we designed how this system interacts with the user and then developed an interactive …

GPS trajectories are the essential foundations for many trajectory-based applications. Most applications require a large number of high sample rate trajectories to achieve a good performance. However, many real-life trajectories are collected with low sample rate due to energy concern or other constraints. We study the task of trajectory recovery in this paper as a means to increase the sample rate of low sample trajectories. Most existing works on trajectory recovery follow a sequence-to-sequence diagram, with an encoder to encode a trajectory and a decoder to recover real GPS points in the trajectory. However, these works ignore the topology of …

Insights Into Accuracy Of Social Scientists' Forecasts Of Societal Change, Igor Grossma, Andree Hartanto, Nadyanna M. Majeed, Et Al See Comments For Full List Of Authors

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

How well can social scientists predict societal change, and what processes underlie their predictions? To answer these questions, we ran two forecasting tournaments testing accuracy of predictions of societal change in domains commonly studied in the social sciences: ideological preferences, political polarization, life satisfaction, sentiment on social media, and gender-career and racial bias. Following provision of historical trend data on the domain, social scientists submitted pre-registered monthly forecasts for a year (Tournament 1; N=86 teams/359 forecasts), with an opportunity to update forecasts based on new data six months later (Tournament 2; N=120 teams/546 forecasts). Benchmarking forecasting accuracy revealed that social …

Kiasu (Fear Of Losing Out): An Indigenous Psychological Construct In Singapore And Its Impact, Chi-Ying Cheng, Sheila X. R. Wee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

“Kiasu,” a Hokkien term, which directly translates as the “fear of losing out” is synonymous with the Singapore identity. Yet, there has been little empirical research investigating this indigenous psychological construct in Singapore. This paper first delves into Singapore’s Kiasu culture and existing research of Kiasu, which diverges on the operationalization and measurement of Kiasu as a psychological construct. While early research conceptualized Kiasu as a behavioral tendency, more recent investigations have begun to construe Kiasu as a mindset. Next, we review Kiasu-related outcomes in four domains: academic performance, learning strategies, well-being, and creativity. Finally, we propose a new theoretical …

A Parametric Numerical Analysis Investigation To Optimize The Performance Of The Ranque-Hilsch Vortex Tube, Muneer Ahmad Sungur

Theses

A vortex tube is a device that separates compressed air into two streams: one with a higher temperature (hot stream) and the other with a lower temperature (cold stream). It is a popular cooling option because it is small, safe, and affordable. The main objective of this thesis is to examine the energy separation performance of RHVT by varying the internal tapering angles of convergent angles (2°, 1.75°, 1.5°, 1.25°, 1°, 0.75°, and 0.5°), straight angles (0°), and divergent angles (0.5°, 1°, 2°, 4°, and 6°), While the cold mass fraction is constant (0.317). Length-to-diameter ratio (Lt/Dt), inlet pressure, and …

Lax Integrability And Solution Methods For The Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation With External Potentials: Exact Solutions And Applications, Laila Yahya Al Sakkaf

Dissertations

The investigation of a nonlinear differential equation (NLDE) integrability is the foundation for understanding and predicting the behavior of systems that are governed by that NLDE. The existence of a Lax pair (LP) representation is a reliable indicator of the indicator of the integrability of an NLDE. If an NLDE admits an LP, it is considered integrable in the LP sense, and this has important implications for the behavior and solutions of the system. The LP plays a crucial role in many powerful analytical solution methods for solving NLDEs. One such method is the Darboux transformation (DT), which allows for …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Some Disubstituted Cyclopentadienyl Rhenium Complexes As Potential Candidates In Semiconductive Materials, Chloe Vernon

Senior Honors Theses

Since 2000, when the Nobel Prize in Chemistry as awarded for conductive polymer research few studies have been performed concerning the conductive capabilities of discrete organometallic compounds. For this project, organometallic compounds were formed specifically with a transition metal included in the structure. Through oxidation and reduction reactions, the variation in the electrical conductivity could allow for an analysis of whether this unique structure would allow for tunability. The goal of this research was to begin with aromatic substituted fulvenes and perform various multistep synthesis processes, utilizing thallium salt intermediates, to produce several disubstituted cyclopentadienyl rhenium complexes. In this project, …
