Groundwater Contamination - Numerical Methods, Morgan Purser

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Groundwater contamination from leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) poses a significant risk to nearby drinking water supplies, particularly in rural areas where private wells are common. One UST can hold over 100,000 liters (30,000+ gallons) of abandoned gasoline according to Geo Forward, a provider of environmental services, information, and news. Tt is estimated that there are over 500,000 USTs abandoned throughout the United States, capable of leaking into the groundwater.

In this study, the transport of liquid petroleum from a leaking UST towards a downgradient residential well was evaluated based on the effectiveness of various protection strategies. Four mitigation scenarios …

The Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo marks the end of Chevron deference and fundamentally reshapes the administrative law landscape. In its wake, agencies must now defend regulatory action without the benefit of the judiciary’s longstanding presumption in favor of that agency’s statutory interpretations. Against this backdrop, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) attempted to classify certain strains and quantities of Salmonella as adulterants under the Poultry Products Inspection Act (PPIA)—an interpretation that marked a sharp departure from decades of prior agency position. For most of history, judges have applied fault- and sex-based presumptions to decide the kinds of custody arrangements that are in children’s best interests. Now that those have been eliminated, courts have no clear guidance for deciding the custody of children other than a vague directive to do what is “best.” Legislatures have enacted non-exclusive lists of suggested factors to consider, but these statutes are frequently as vaguely worded as the “best interest” directive. Because precatory words inserted into statutes with the intention of guiding a judge’s discretion are not binding, they do not provide a basis for appellate review. …

In Georgia, a thirteen-year-old child convicted of homicide can be sentenced to die in prison. While most states have retreated from juvenile life without parole, abolishing it through legislation or judicial decision, Georgia has moved in the opposite direction, becoming the nation’s leader in imposing the sentence. A sequence of Supreme Court decisions—four expanding protections and one dismantling them—has produced a volatile legal landscape in which the possibility of relief has been extended and withdrawn.

Purpose: Acquired disabilities, such as spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, limb loss (or other major limb injury/illness), or stroke, are typically accompanied by an array of physical and emotional symptoms and social challenges that interfere with recovery and affect quality of life (QOL). Despite advances in personalized medicine, interrelationships between symptoms remain unclear, and clinicians often treat individual symptoms in isolation. The objective of this study was to identify clusters of symptoms that occur across sudden-onset disability populations, with a long-term goal of identifying targets for clinical intervention.

Background and objectives

Treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) >5 cm is problematic, as patients are often outside transplantation criteria, and cirrhosis compromises curative resection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate survival following treatment with ablation compared to chemotherapy in large HCC.

Methods

This was a retrospective cohort study of the National Cancer Database (NCDB) Participant User File from 2004 to 2017. Patients with HCC >5 cm in diameter treated with ablation versus chemotherapy alone were compared. Inverse probability-weighted propensity scores were used to model treatment assignments in the Cox proportional hazards model.

This short communication synthesizes evidence on how the Ice, Cloud and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) altimetry data are used by private sector actors and the implications for economic value creation. Using secondary research that collected and summarized information from existing data from reports, journals, websites, and databases, the work identifies 54 companies across 9 sectors leveraging ICESat-2-derived elevation, canopy height, bathymetry, and surface measurements to inform decision-making, risk assessment, and new business models. A single, recurrent, gain-of-function pathogenic variant in PRKG1 (p.Arg177Gln, also referred to as p.Arg192Gln) causes heritable thoracic aortic disease with a high lifetime risk for aortic dissections that frequently occur before there is enlargement of the proximal thoracic aorta. This report summarizes the clinical manifestations of the PRKG1 pathogenic variant in two unrelated families, including early-onset type A dissection, chronic thoracoabdominal dissection with visceral complications, and elective aortic repair of the proximal aorta with minimal enlargement. Across three distinct essays, this research investigates how mass media narratives shape economic preferences and labor decisions, and conversely, how economic fundamentals drive the evolution of cultural markers like language.   The first two chapters focus on the cultural and economic impact of television in Latin America, utilizing a novel dataset of telenovelas aired between 1960 and 2024. Lateral column ulcerations remain a persistent and complex challenge in diabetic foot management. Although procedures such as tailor’s bunionectomy may provide localized pressure relief, they often fail to address the underlying biomechanical contributors, most notably rearfoot deformities such as calcaneal varus or pes cavovarus frequently observed in diabetic patients. These structural abnormalities shift the weight‑bearing axis laterally, increasing ground reaction forces along the fifth metatarsal and predisposing individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and impaired proprioception to recurrent ulceration. Between innings, Coomer looked at the scoreboard, and the Kansas City Royals’ mascot Sluggerrr threw a hot dog into the stands, hitting Coomer in the eye and detaching his retina. Coomer sued the Royals for negligence, but the jury found in the Royals’ favor. The Missouri Supreme Court overturned the jury verdict, holding that, while spectators assume the risks of balls and bats flying into the stands, they do not assume the risk of flying hot dogs. Purpose 
To increase night-shift adult ICU nurse compliance with standardized oral care documentation by at least 20% as a core ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) prevention process.
Background
VAP is a preventable healthcare-associated infection associated with increased morbidity, mortality, ICU length of stay, and costs. Oral-care documentation is often inconsistent because of competing priorities and workflow barriers.
Methodology
Guided by the Knowledge-to-Action framework, this QI project used three PDSA cycles after a September 2025 baseline in a 16-bed ICU. Interventions included 1:1 simulation, EPIC prompts, and bedside coaching; manual audits addressed EPIC misclassification. Trends and run charts analyzed 183 records; surveys assessed …

Drawing on both leadership theory and practical examples from clinical legal education, this piece argues for a broad definition of leadership, embracing diversity and encompassing the counter-cultural values of listening and humility. The proliferation of AI-assisted offensive tools has introduced a new category of cyber attacker that combines the speed of automation with the adaptive reasoning previously associated only with skilled human operators. Despite the richness of behavioral data captured by SSH honeypots, existing analyses treat interaction logs primarily as evidence of malicious activity rather than as a dataset capable of distinguishing between attacker types. This thesis investigates whether human-driven, traditionally automated, and AI-assisted attackers produce distinguishable behavioral signatures within SSH honeypot interactions, and whether machine learning techniques can reliably classify attacker behavior from session-level features.
