Blessing Box Plant, Lauren Dietz Apr 2023

Blessing Box Plant, Lauren Dietz

Honors Projects

This project set out to build and plant blessing boxes in Bowling Green, Ohio to directly address the problem of food insecurity in the community. A blessing box is a free-standing food pantry that can be stocked through donations from the community, and utilized by whoever may be in need. The motto of these boxes is “Leave what you can, take what you need.” According to Feeding America (2022), Food insecurity is “A lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life,” (Feeding America, 2022, para. 1). In 2021, 33.8 …

Aim: To evaluate the performance of the multiple imputation (MI) method for estimating clinical effectiveness in pediatric Crohn's disease in the ImproveCareNow registry; to address the analytical challenge of missing data. Materials & methods: Simulation studies were performed by creating missing datasets based on fully observed data from patients with moderate-to-severe Crohn's disease treated with non-ustekinumab biologics. MI was used to impute sPCDAI remission statuses in each simulated dataset. Results: The true remission rate (75.1% [95% CI: 72.6%, 77.5%]) was underestimated without imputation (72.6% [71.8%, 73.3%]). With MI, the estimate was 74.8% (74.4%, 75.2%). Conclusion: MI reduced nonresponse bias and …

Consent In Conversation: Education Of Sexual Violence In Maya Angelou's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Emily Benning

Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics

Maya Angelou’s memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is just one of many titles challenged and banned in public schools for “sexually explicit” content. On page 71 of her 281 page autobiography, Angelou discloses that she was raped at 8 years old by her mother’s boyfriend, and despite it being followed with scenes that emphasize the value of healing through literature, public attention has been directed to the (non-consensual) intercourse itself as a reason for censorship. As censorship efforts have expanded in the past two decades, challengers have continued to add more ban-worthy qualities to the list …

Influence Diagnostics For Generalized Estimating Equations Applied To Correlated Categorical Data, Louis Vazquez Apr 2023

Influence Diagnostics For Generalized Estimating Equations Applied To Correlated Categorical Data, Louis Vazquez

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

Influence diagnostics in regression analysis allow analysts to identify observations that have a strong influence on model fitted probabilities and parameter estimates. The most common influence diagnostics, such as Cook’s Distance for linear regression, are based on a deletion approach where the results of a model with and without observations of interest are compared. Here, deletion-based influence diagnostics are proposed for generalized estimating equations (GEE) for correlated, or clustered, nominal multinomial responses. The proposed influence diagnostics focus on GEEs with the baseline-category logit link function and a local odds ratio parameterization of the association structure. Formulas for both observation- and …

Lafayette, The Thinker, Anna Trull

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Between 1775 and 1834, the Marquis de Lafayette played a role in the ongoing development of both the American and French Revolutions. Most previous scholarship about Lafayette highlights his military activities as a major-general in the American Revolution and as General of the National Guard of Paris in the French Revolution. This paper examines Lafayette’s draft of the Declaration of the Rights of the Man and of the Citizen, a list of enslaved peoples that were chosen for Lafayette’s experimental plantation in French Guiana, Lafayette’s membership in the Society of the Friends of Blacks, and letters between Lafayette and America’s …

Evaluation Of Fluvial Package Amalgamation In Medial Dfs Deposits, Angel Peak Area, Nacimineto Formation, Sarah R. Rysanek

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Fluvial packages are the hypothetical groupings of facies that make up the fluvial succession consisting of channel belt sandstones and associated levee, floodplain, and avulsion deposits. This study attempted to describe a single fluvial package laterally using the new technologies of UAV imaging and 3D photogrammetry; however, amalgamation of channel belts and erosion from this amalgamation made long-distance lateral correlation difficult. This analysis of medial deposits in the Nacimiento Formation in the Angel Peak Area, Northwestern New Mexico evaluates the degree of amalgamation of fluvial packages across the study area while identifying facies associated with the hypothetical fluvial package. This …

Carbon disulfide is a toxic gas emitted from industrial plants and a common greenhouse gas. Acute poisonings from carbon disulfide are rare, but recurring exposure to low doses can have long term health effects. Currently, there are two approaches being considered for the removal of acid gas pollutants: (1) sequester these gases from the atmosphere or (2) remove these gases directly upon combustion (post-combustion). Potential energy surfaces (PES) for a series of CS2 capture reactions by NH3 in the presence H2O were calculated at the MP2/a(D+d) evel in the gas phase. G3(MP2) and FPD calculations are in progress. Extensive thermodynamic …

Monitoring Algal Blooms In Small Lakes Using Drones: A Case Study In Southern Illinois, Di Wu, Ruopu Li, Jia Liu, Nafeesa Khan

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) persist in many water bodies around the world and pose adverse health and economic impacts to the affected communities. Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have recently been applied as a cost-effective tool for HABs monitoring. In this study, HABs in two small lakes in Southern Illinois (Carbondale Reservoir and the Campus Lake of Southern Illinois University) were monitored using UAVs and biomass concentrations in lake waters. By analyzing vegetation indices derived from multispectral UAV images and chlorophyll- a concentrations in the two lakes, statistical regression models were established for each waterbody. The model relates spectral characteristics …

An Exploration Of The Distinct Narratives Of Mark And Matthew In The Gospels, Lanh Nguyen Apr 2023

An Exploration Of The Distinct Narratives Of Mark And Matthew In The Gospels, Lanh Nguyen

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

Introduction: Reading the New Testament, people can divide the Gospels into two groups: the first group is the Synoptic Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke; the second one is the gospel of John which seems to be very different compared to the first one. The first group is named Synoptic Gospels (Synoptic in Latin means “seen together”) because of the great similarities among them such as plots, words, and even some order of events. However, by deeply studying each synoptic gospel, readers will recognize huge differences among the three synoptic gospels. What is the purpose/ theological interest in each gospel? …
