Enabling Conditions For Safety System Implementation By Leaders In A Southern California School District: An Improvement Science Study, Shelah Feldstein
Enabling Conditions For Safety System Implementation By Leaders In A Southern California School District: An Improvement Science Study, Shelah Feldstein
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of the study was to learn the enabling conditions for implementation of a safety system in a Southern California school district. One high school piloted this safety system while focusing their attention to document, investigate, and reduce the number of fight and prefight incidents involving students. Although the intended outcome was to reduce these safety incidents, the intended learning of this study was to understand how the district could adapt the safety system model.
Pilot participants were interviewed and asked to share successes and challenges with regards to each of the four main model components: (a) reporting safety …

The United States has a colonies problem. The more than 3.5 million Americans who live in the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands lack some of the most fundamental rights and protections, such as the right to vote. This is due to a series of decisions decided more than a century ago, collectively known as the Insular Cases, in which the U.S. Supreme Court held that the “half-civilized,” “savage,” “ignorant and lawless” “alien races” that inhabited America’s overseas territories were not entitled to the same constitutional rights and …

Impact Of An Evidence-Based Order Set On Pneumonia Length Of Stay, Troy Wayne Spires
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Among adult patients admitted with pneumonia, what is the effect of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) sets for pneumonia, as compared to usual practice, on the length of stay over three months.
Purpose: The project aimed to determine if inpatient LOS related to pneumonia could be impacted by utilizing appropriately completed computerized physician order entry (CPOE). The current pneumonia order set was evaluated and updated to reflect the latest evidence-based standards of care. Pneumonia order sets with evidence-based practice treatment algorithms was the intervention focus as they have been shown to impact the length of stays …

Reducing Falls Among Adult Psychiatric Inpatients Using K-Cards With The Epi, Epfrat Factors, And Nursing Judgment, Katelyn Dunn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
In the United States, the highest rates of falls are in the psychiatric inpatient population. Fall reduction was as an organizational goal of the project site, a 352-bed hospital in the Southeastern United States. The Epic Predictive Index (EPI), an automated fall risk assessment tool, had recently been adopted. This project evaluated the impact of an enhanced fall reduction strategy involving the use of Kamishibai Cards (K-Cards), which are a compliance reminder for healthcare staff, to support additional evidence-based identification of fall risk among adults receiving inpatient psychiatric care at the facility. The use of K-Cards with each patient’s current …

Distribution Of Fire Incidents And Fire Fighting Services In Dki Jakarta Province, Muhammad Zakaria, Mangapul P. Tambunan, Hafid Setiadi
Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)
The rapid development of the city results in the risk of disasters, one of which is a fire disaster. Fire incidents have increased from time to time, this occurs in line with the continued increase in population and density of settlements. Fire can cause material loss or loss of life. Efforts to minimize fire disasters can be carried out by providing fire fighting service facilities whose numbers can reach all areas. The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of fire incidents and to determine the distribution of fire services in DKI Jakarta Province. The type of research …
Wild Women Of Anatolia: The Critical Construct Validity Of The Liberation Of Women In Turkey, Sedef Ozoguz
Wild Women Of Anatolia: The Critical Construct Validity Of The Liberation Of Women In Turkey, Sedef Ozoguz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Feminist, sexuality and social psychology researchers studying women’s liberation in Turkey have solely focused on freedoms denied, outlining freedoms from gendered political, institutional and intimate constraints such as domestic violence, without much attention to freedoms desired, such as freedom to dream. Following Fromm’s (1941) conceptualization of freedom as freedom from restrictions placed on one and freedom to do what one wants to do authentically, my work engages in the critical construct validity (Fine & Torre, 2019) of the liberation of Turkish women, troubling, questioning and critiquing the assumptions typically made about the construct and offering an alternative way of studying …

Faculty Peer Coaching: Collaborative Partnerships For Instructional Development, Kristin N. Rainville, David G. Title
Education Faculty Publications
Teaching in higher education can be a lonely endeavor. Oftentimes, professors find themselves alone trying to work out solutions to emerging issues of student engagement or academic struggles. As colleagues, Kristin and David came together to talk about the ways in which our experiences in leadership, coaching, and instructional design and effective teaching could support our colleagues in their development as instructors. What if we designed an opportunity and invited faculty to participate in a peer coaching community? We could provide the group with professional development about teaching and coaching, as well as space, partners and a learning community for …

Patients with sickle cell disease are at risk of vaso-occlusive crises including acute chest syndrome (ACS) and pulmonary hypertension. ACS is a life-threatening complication of sickle cell disease and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is known that pulmonary pressures increase during episodes of acute chest syndrome and may lead to acute right ventricular failure leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Given the paucity of randomized controlled trials, the management of ACS and pulmonary hypertension in the setting of a sickle cell crisis largely relies on expert opinion. We present a case of acute chest syndrome complicated by …

PURPOSE: Intersectional stigma fuels inequities among transgender women of color, which have been exacerbated by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study evaluated a community-led emergency assistance program for transgender women of color.
METHODS: We conducted a pilot program evaluation (n=8).
RESULTS: Retention was 87.5% over the follow-up. Funds were primarily used for bills, food, and housing. Requesting and receiving funds was described as "somewhat to extremely easy." Participants identified the need for economic empowerment components in future programming, specifically gender affirmation, skill-building for education and employment, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
CONCLUSION: Findings highlight the need to invest in community-led …
Caremark’S Climate Failure, Andrew W. Winden
Caremark’S Climate Failure, Andrew W. Winden
UC Law Journal
Unless U.S. corporations take steps to harden their assets against natural disasters exacerbated by climate change and prepare for the transition to a zero-carbon economy, they face the prospect of catastrophic risk to their assets and market values, damaging both shareholders and, particularly where there are systemic effects, society at large. But surveys indicate that directors of American corporations do not view climate change as an important focus for their boards. In contrast, directors in Australia and Canada consider climate change one of the top two priorities for their governments and one of the top challenges for their companies. Different …
The Collapse Of Alice’S Wonderland: Mayo’S Faulty Two-Step Framework And A Possible Solution To Patent-Eligibility Jurisprudence, Philip Hawkyard
The Collapse Of Alice’S Wonderland: Mayo’S Faulty Two-Step Framework And A Possible Solution To Patent-Eligibility Jurisprudence, Philip Hawkyard
UC Law Journal
In Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, Inc., the Supreme Court established a two-step framework to determine whether a supposed invention that involves a “natural law” can be a patent-eligible subject matter. Two years later, the Supreme Court extended this framework in Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International to “abstract ideas,” and cemented the framework as the test to determine patent-eligible subject matter. Recent cases demonstrate that this framework has collapsed from a two-step inquiry into a one-step inquiry, leading to bizarre results and legal uncertainty. This Note examines why the Mayo framework should never have been extended to abstract …
Impact Jurisdiction & Structural Investigations: The Key To The United States Prosecuting Human Rights Violators, Nick Wiley
UC Law Journal
Since the turn of the century, there has been an exponential rise in forcibly displaced persons and human rights violations. This rise has coincided with a series of acts that have removed the United States as a global leader in the fight for human rights. When President Biden took office, he stated his goal of returning the United States to being the global moral authority leader. To achieve this goal, the Biden Administration implemented a plan to address the human rights violations in Central America that are driving forcibly displaced persons to the U.S.-Mexico border seeking asylum. The plan, however, …

Could Biological Soil Crusts Act As Natural Fire Fuel Breaks In The Sagebrush Steppe?, Lea A. Condon, Douglas J. Shinneman, Roger Rosentreter, Peter S. Coates
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
For decades, large portions of the semi-arid sagebrush ecosystem have been experiencing increased frequency and extent of wildfire, even though small, infrequent fire is a natural disturbance in this ecosystem (Baker, 2006). Increased wildfire is threatening the existence of sagebrush ecosystems and the wildlife species that depend upon them (Baker, 2006; Coates et al., 2016). Increased wildfire in sagebrush ecosystems is often driven by invasive annual grasses, especially cheatgrass, Bromus tectorum (L.). Invasion can initiate a trajectory toward a “grass-fire cycle”, in which cheatgrass increases fine fuel loadings that promote fire, and native plant species do not recover quickly after …

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
Researching a topic can never take the place of actually experiencing something, but you can find out a lot about a topic by looking at information online. You can’t research every aspect of college to be completely prepared, but you could still learn a lot so why isn’t the difficulty of adjusting to college a thing of the past? Our group chose to focus on college misconceptions because with so much information readily available online, we want to know what areas students still end up struggling with. We wanted to gain insights on how college students’ expectations of college compared …

An Ethnography Of Factors Leading Students To Choose Parkland, Dwayne Hubbard, Jaimee Hudson, David Schroeder, Jazmine Smith
Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
Our research question was focused on why students choose Parkland, a community college, and not a 4-year institution where they can get a bachelors degree if their goal is the college degree. Looking at Parkland’s website and at studies on community colleges (Chen 2021) we found that most outsiders looking in would say that the flexibility of a two-year college is one of the most significant advantages. You can enroll in classes that fit into your schedule and you can also generally transfer your credits to a four-year university later if you decide to earn a bachelors degree. We wanted …

Ethnographies of Parkland Student Life
Parkland College is home to roughly 10,000 students, coming from various backgrounds and cultures. This diversity in the student body, led us to focus this study on the types of resources offered to Parkland students. We believe that the college answers to the needs of its students and that looking at these resources in terms of academics and mental health can help identify the challenges that students deal with in their lived experiences.

Extremal Absorbing Sets In Low-Density Parity-Check Codes, Emily Mcmillon, Allison Beemer, Christine A. Kelley
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
Absorbing sets are combinatorial structures in the Tanner graphs of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes that have been shown to inhibit the high signal-to-noise ratio performance of iterative decoders over many communication channels. Absorbing sets of minimum size are the most likely to cause errors, and thus have been the focus of much research. In this paper, we determine the sizes of absorbing sets that can occur in general and left-regular LDPC code graphs, with emphasis on the range of b for a given a for which an (a, b)-absorbing set may exist. We identify certain cases of extremal …
