View-Shaping, First Personal Authority, And The Asymmetry Between Providing And Withholding, Clara W. Cullen Apr 2023

View-Shaping, First Personal Authority, And The Asymmetry Between Providing And Withholding, Clara W. Cullen

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In her paper, Freedom and Influence in Formative Education, Kyla Ebels-Duggan addresses the debate regarding the moral justification of parents and educators raising children under a particular normative outlook, with normative outlook and beliefs referring to one’s perspective on what actions, behaviors, outcomes, or beliefs are acceptable or correct. This normative outlook pertains not just to moral judgments but also views on the superior way of life. This debate questioning if parents and educators are morally correct in shaping their children according to their normative beliefs is of particular importance amidst rising political contention regarding the content and methods …

Explaining Guatemalan Vigilantism, Bryant Mcconkie Apr 2023

Explaining Guatemalan Vigilantism, Bryant Mcconkie

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

Ripped from his home in Concepción, Guatemala, the evening of October 13, 2015, Mayor Bacilio Juracán was brutally beaten, doused with gasoline, and burned to death by attackers convinced he had orchestrated the murder of a political rival they supported. In just this one isolated incident, the town hall, various cars, and at least six additional buildings were burned along with the mayor (“Linchan y Queman” 2015). A growing number of similar lynchings—vigilante attacks in which victims of the mob are severely injured or killed—across Guatemala have thrust Guatemalan vigilantism into the public consciousness, perplexing governments and political theorists alike …

The Impact Of Gender On The Acceptance Of Surveillance Technology, Jody Messick Apr 2023

The Impact Of Gender On The Acceptance Of Surveillance Technology, Jody Messick

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

A classic dilemma facing governments and citizens alike is the trade-off between privacy and security. This concept is found in the Constitution’s Fourth Amendment, which implies that citizens have a right to be protected against “unreasonable searches and seizures by the government” (FindLaw 2019). The technological revolution, and its implications for privacy, has complicated the nature of this right. Different types of data require different approaches to the privacy versus security tradeoff. A 2003 panel by Wright et. al asks how “sensor data,” data that is collected through technology that tracks a user’s online or real-world movements, should be approached, …

Does Culture Impact Academic Anxiety In University Students?, Angie J. Marroquin Apr 2023

Does Culture Impact Academic Anxiety In University Students?, Angie J. Marroquin

Honors Theses

University students may experience academic anxiety when attending an institution of higher education. For this study we recruited a diverse population of college students with different cultural backgrounds to investigate if specific groups are more impacted by these experiences. The purpose of this study is to determine whether cultural factors (cultural inclusion, country of origin, language) influence academic anxiety in college students. A survey was distributed to Eastern Kentucky University students. The results indicated that cultural inclusion had the greatest impact on academic anxiety. Country of origin and language did not influence academic anxiety according to results.

What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller Apr 2023

What Before Means: Teaching About The Communicative Contribution Of The English Pluperfect, Max Miller

Publications and Research

This paper presents a text-based analysis of the communicative functions of the simple past and pluperfect tenses of English, and offers a pedagogical approach to assist learners in acquiring them. Following a functional, usage-based linguistics perspective, the analysis holds that the simple past expresses Time PAST, while the pluperfect expresses Time PAST, BEFORE. Thus only the latter tense signals a speaker's subjective creation of a linkage in time. The understanding of these meanings can enhance an English language teacher's effectiveness in the classroom (as in selecting texts and activities) and a language user's effectiveness in communication. A classroom-based pedagogical application …

Belonging And Identity In Mustang: Lived Experiences, Social Identities, And Mobility Patterns Among Himalayan Peoples Of Nepal, Lauren Carter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper delves into an immersive exploration and contemplation of a pivotal transformation unfolding in the heartland of Lower Mustang, Nepal. What began as an endeavor to channel my creative expression and unearth the diminishing world of yak herding soon necessitated a broader, more nuanced analysis of the profound changes sweeping across the region. This paper, mainly drawing upon the narratives of the inhabitants, seeks to portray the contemporary cultural and capital significance of yaks, as well as the various factors— climate change, outmigration, national policy discrepancies, conservation initiatives, and shifting cultural paradigms— that render specific patterns of movement increasingly …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Northwestern Hawaiian Ridge is an age-progressive volcanic chain sourced from the Hawaiian mantle plume. Proximal to the Northwestern Hawaiian Ridge are several clusters of smaller seamounts and ridges with limited age constraints and unknown geodynamic origins. This study presents new bathymetric data and 40Ar/39Ar age determinations from lava flow samples recovered by remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from two east–west-trending chains of seamounts that lie north of the Pūhāhonu and Mokumanamana volcanoes. The previously unexplored Naifeh Chain (28°48′N,167°48′W) and Plumeria Chain (25°36′N, 164°35′W) contain five volcanic structures each, including three guyots in the Naifeh Chain. New 40 …

Treatment Of Post-Operative Pain In Children With Severe Neurological Impairment, Jordan Keys

Presentations

Background: The assessment of pain in children with severe neurologic impairment (SNI) can be more challenging than in neurotypical children.

Objective: To describe the type, number of classes, and duration of post-operative pain medications for procedures common among children with SNI. Secondarily, to describe the variability in pain management strategies across children’s hospitals, specifically for opioid administration.

Design/Methods: This retrospective cohort study of the Pediatric Health Information System included children hospitalized with SNI aged 0-21 years old who underwent common procedures during 2019. We defined SNI using previously described high-intensity neurologic impairment (HINI) diagnosis codes and identified six common ( …

Indirect Bridge Monitoring Using Crowdsourced Smartphone Data From Passing Vehicles, Jase Sitton Apr 2023

Indirect Bridge Monitoring Using Crowdsourced Smartphone Data From Passing Vehicles, Jase Sitton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Bridges become susceptible to deterioration and damage as they age and are subjected to continually increasing demands. Bridge inspections help insure the integrity and safety for service and are conducted on a regular, but usually infrequency, basis. Traditional evaluation methods include visual inspections and permanent sensor installations. Visual inspections are both time and labor intensive and often require bridge closure or service interruption, while cost and logistics complications often prevent practical, widespread deployment of permanent sensor installations. Sensors, including smartphones, in moving vehicles may be used to monitor bridge condition over time and provide valuable insight into the dynamic behavior …

Remote-Sensing Method For Monitoring Suspended-Sediment Concentration On The Middle-Mississippi And Lower-Missouri Rivers, Megan J. Martinez, Amanda L. Cox Apr 2023

Remote-Sensing Method For Monitoring Suspended-Sediment Concentration On The Middle-Mississippi And Lower-Missouri Rivers, Megan J. Martinez, Amanda L. Cox

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Sediment transport, erosion, and deposition are primary drivers of river geomorphic processes and ecological services. Suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) is an important parameter for evaluating these processes and is accordingly of significant interest to engineers, scientists, and water resource managers. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) previously operated nine daily SSC gauging stations along the Mississippi River, with operating dates ranging from 1974 to 2018. Currently, there are no USGS gauging stations reporting daily SSC values along the Mississippi River. For this study, regression models were developed to compute the SSC along the Middle-Mississippi River (MMR) and Lower-Missouri River (LMOR) using …

Informing Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program Design And Watershed Planning: Case Study Of Streamsmart Data Analysis In The Upper White River Basin, Arkansas, Erin Grantz, Brian E. Haggard, Beng 4973/5973

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

The watershed group H 2 Ozarks founded the StreamSmart Citizen Science Program to establish baseline and long-term water quality data for the Upper White River Basin, Arkansas. StreamSmart volunteers collect water samples and conduct habitat and macroinvertebrate community assessments at >20 sites across a land use-land cover (LULC) gradient. Since 2020, H 2 Ozarks has adaptively assessed the program to ensure that the investment in water quality data meets core goals, with particular interest in planning tools and aligning expectations of volunteer effort with the level of training and support. Study objectives were to use StreamSmart data to 1) facilitate …

Occupational Justice In The Justice System: The Impact Of Occupational Therapy On Incarcerated Americans, Cassidy Cain Apr 2023

Occupational Justice In The Justice System: The Impact Of Occupational Therapy On Incarcerated Americans, Cassidy Cain

Honors Theses

In the United States alone, there are two million people being held in prison and four million people on parole or probation. Of those released, over half will return to prison in a year. This is an alarmingly high rate of recidivism and incarceration compared to other developed nations. The United States prison system fails to rehabilitate inmates and instead equips them with maladaptive skills that will hinder their success outside of the prison. Inmates are suffering from occupational injustice, which can be detrimental to their ability to succeed outside of the prison system. Implementing occupational therapists into the prison …
