International Professional Development Torremaggiore, Italy, Ella Sturm Apr 2023

International Professional Development Torremaggiore, Italy, Ella Sturm

International Professional Development Partnerships (IPDP) Consortium

Introduction: I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad through the International Professional Development Program (IPDS) in Torremaggiore, Italy. This program allows students to travel to other countries to gain knowledge and experience multiculturalism. Not only did this almost three week trip allow myself to experience just that, I also grew professionally, academically and personally throughout this teaching opportunity in Italy. Immersing myself into a new culture has also helped me meet new people, experience new perspectives/cultural norms, strengthen my ability to adapt, and develop a greater sense of cultural awareness.

Mental Health Issues Among Children And Adolescents In The Dominican Republic, Alyssia Schwab Apr 2023

Mental Health Issues Among Children And Adolescents In The Dominican Republic, Alyssia Schwab

International Professional Development Partnerships (IPDP) Consortium

Approximately 20% of children and adolescents in the United States have documented mental health issues. However, although we know that about 90% of children with mental health concerns come from low- and middle-income countries, there is very little information regarding the prevalence of mental health issues among children and adolescents living in the Dominican Republic.

Echoes Of The Zong Confronting Legal Realism In The Arguments For Reparations From The Atlantic Slave Trade And Modernday Human Trafficking, Glenys Spence Apr 2023

Echoes Of The Zong Confronting Legal Realism In The Arguments For Reparations From The Atlantic Slave Trade And Modernday Human Trafficking, Glenys Spence

Faculty Scholarship

This Article is based on the premise that modern day human trafficking, like the transatlantic slave trade, violates jus cogens norms, and thus the practice was and still is a violation of US laws under customary international law. The analysis will examine the laws that were applied to chattel slavery in England and her colonies through the lens of some seminal slavery cases to unearth the tyranny of interpretation in human trafficking reparations and liability claims under the current Supreme Court jurisprudence and the Alien Tort Statute (“ATS”). The featured cases will reveal that the same philosophies undergirding the jurisprudence …

Investigation Of Cofactor Activities Of Endothelial Microparticle- Thrombomodulin With Liposomal Surrogate, Valentinas Gruzdys, Lin Wang, Dan Wang, Rachel Huang, Xue-Long Sun Apr 2023

Investigation Of Cofactor Activities Of Endothelial Microparticle- Thrombomodulin With Liposomal Surrogate, Valentinas Gruzdys, Lin Wang, Dan Wang, Rachel Huang, Xue-Long Sun

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Thrombomodulin (TM) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein mainly expressed on the endothelial cells, where it binds thrombin to form the thrombin-TM complex that can activate protein C and thrombin-activable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) and induce anticoagulant and anti-fibrinolytic reactions, respec-tively. Cell activation and injury often sheds microparticles that contain membrane TM, which circulate in biofluids like blood. However, the biological function of circulating microparticle-TM is still unknown even though it has been recognized as a biomarker of endothelial cell injury and damage. In comparison with cell membrane, different phospholipids are exposed on the microparticle surface due to cell membrane "flip-flop"upon …

Implementasi Kebijakan Bantuan Pangan Non Tunai Dalam Rangka Pengatasan Kemiskinan Di Era Covid - 19, Haura Ariesta, Fentiny Nugroho

Jurnal Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial

This study focuses on the implementation of the Non-Cash Food Assistance (BPNT) policy in poverty alleviation efforts in Kembangan District, West Jakarta, during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the BPNT program managed by the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia adheres to the distribution procedures, several challenges have emerged, including delays in disbursing aid funds, invalid beneficiary data, issues with E-waroeng (food stalls), account registration, delayed distribution, and occasional inadequacy of food supplies. However, supportive factors such as effective coordination, improved data management, education, active participation from local authorities, and the commitment of E-waroeng owners have contributed to …

Strengthening Paraprofessional Effectiveness Through Mentoring, Brooke Hansen Apr 2023

Strengthening Paraprofessional Effectiveness Through Mentoring, Brooke Hansen

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

According to research, mentoring programs in schools have been inconsistent and unaccountable, putting new or existing paraprofessionals behind and ill-prepared in providing instruction to at- risk students. Paraprofessionals work with at-risk students to improve learning and assist them in achieving their goals while being supervised by professional and trained staff. Previous studies have shown that paraprofessionals play an important role in the support of at-risk students and training is needed but most times is not feasible for every school district to implement for each paraprofessional that is employed in their school. A school improvement plan was created to put in …

Assessing The Costs And Benefits Of Principal Time Usage And Ohio's Edchoice Scholarship, Adam J. Dufault Ed.D.

Journal of Catholic Education

This study explored the experience of Catholic school principals in Ohio whose schools have participated in the EdChoice Scholarship program. The researcher employed the lens of principal time usage to examine the experiences of Ohio Catholic school principals with EdChoice, with a focus on the direct experiences of principals participating in the program, the principal’s role in the supervisory aspects of operating the program at a school, and on the connections between workload and principal perceptions of the EdChoice program. The research questions were explored through semi-structured interviews with eight Catholic school principals and three administrative designees at those schools. …

The Beam In Our Own Eyes: Antiracism And Ya Literature Through A Catholic Lens, Katie Sutton, Abigail D. Grafmeyer, Dan Reynolds Apr 2023

The Beam In Our Own Eyes: Antiracism And Ya Literature Through A Catholic Lens, Katie Sutton, Abigail D. Grafmeyer, Dan Reynolds

Journal of Catholic Education

As Catholic schools serve an increasingly racially diverse population of students, they must grapple with the critical requirement to address these students’ unique needs while heeding the call from modern Catholic Church leaders to engage in explicit antiracist action. Using the Historically Responsive Literacy Framework (HRL), this article equips Catholic high school English language arts (ELA) teachers with practical and powerful ways to create antiracist curriculum. To do this effectively, we place antiracist Young Adult (YA) literature (both fiction and nonfiction) in conversation with Catholic canonical texts and modern voices from Catholic clergy members. By connecting with students’ complex identities …

Corruption And Judges' Personal Independence In The Judiciary Of Bangladesh: One Bad Apple Can Spoil The Bunch, S M. Solaiman Apr 2023

Corruption And Judges' Personal Independence In The Judiciary Of Bangladesh: One Bad Apple Can Spoil The Bunch, S M. Solaiman

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

Corruption appears to have been an inexorable crime in Bangladesh for decades. More deplorably, the magnitude of judicial corruption has profoundly increased the miseries of litigants. The situation is so awful that the nation's two successive Attorney Generals have publicly raised the issue to two consecutive Chief Justices of Bangladesh at their felicitation gatherings organized by lawyers of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh soon after their appointments as the nation's top judges. Consistently, empirical findings of Transparency International, a German-based organization, and Transparency International Bangladesh have unequivocally revealed the practice of a large extent of judicial corruption. These allegations are …

Dispelling Sex Trafficking Conspiracy Theories: The Truth Behind Who Is Recruited By Traffickers And How, Mirelle Raza, Kyleigh Feehs

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

Through an analysis of the 1,954 sex trafficking cases prosecuted federally from 2000 to 2020, this Article aims to provide insight into how sex traffickers commonly operate in the United States. Part I explains the damaging consequences of misinformation on an effective anti-trafficking response. The Article then details how traffickers within sex trafficking schemes across the country intentionally target individuals with particular vulnerabilities and recruit them for exploitation. Part II outlines the vulnerabilities that sex traffickers commonly target, highlighting that many of the children that traffickers exploit have run away from home, were experiencing homelessness, were part of the foster …

White Coat Color Of A Black Angus Calf Attributed To An Occurrence Of The Delr217 Variant Of Mitf, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Renae L. Sieck, David J. Steffen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

A white calf, with minimal pigmented markings, was born to two registered Black Angus parents. Given the possibility of an unknown recessive or de novo dominant mutation, whole-genome sequencing was conducted on the trio of individuals. A 3-bp in-frame deletion in MITF was identified; this mutation was unique to the calf but identical to the delR217 variant reported in both humans and murine models of Waardenburg syndrome type 2A and Tietz syndrome. Given the coat color phenotype and identity of the mutation, our data support that this calf represents the first instance of this recurring MITF mutation in cattle.

Procedural Posture And Social Choice, Michael Risch Apr 2023

Procedural Posture And Social Choice, Michael Risch

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Lawyers, judges, and professors have always been interested in the way cases unfold procedurally—their procedural posture. To date, however, nobody has provided a generalized theoretical framework to explain how procedural posture influences outcomes. This Article uses social choice theory to fill that void, providing much-needed insight into the ways that trial court litigation is influenced by the procedural agenda. Social choice theory considers how individual preferences translate to the collective desire. It is a messy business. One key insight of social choice theory is that whoever controls the decision agenda can control the outcome. This Article conceptualizes trial court litigation …

A Mixed Methods Sequential Explanatory Design Study Exploring How Demographic Factors Contribute Individuals Presenting To The Emergency Department For Seizure Management, Radwa Aly Msc Apr 2023

A Mixed Methods Sequential Explanatory Design Study Exploring How Demographic Factors Contribute Individuals Presenting To The Emergency Department For Seizure Management, Radwa Aly Msc

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) mimic epileptic seizures in their clinical manifestations, but are not associated with an abnormal electrical discharge on electroencephalogram. PNES attacks are often treated and managed as likely epileptic seizures, subjecting the patient to unnecessary anti-seizure medications (ASM). Both epileptic seizures and PNES are common reasons for visiting the emergency department (ED), especially for patients without access to ambulatory care. There is growing evidence highlighting disparities in seizure care in the ED related to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status (SES). PNES is a significant burden to the patient and society because of the annual costs spent on …

The Impact Of Usu Extension On Agricultural Productivity, Justen Smith

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

Utah has over 18,000 farms and ranches spanning 11 million acres, which generate more than $21 billion in total economic output (after adjusting for the multiplier effect). While it is true that Utah becomes more urbanized each year, it is also true that agriculture continues to play a vital part in our state. As the population of Utah and the United States continues to grow, food production is more important than ever before. Utah State University (USU) Extension has led the way for 105 years in providing non-biased, research-based technical assistance to producers and the Utah agricultural industry.

The Impact Of Usu Extension On Building Vibrant Communities, Heidi Leblanc

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

Utah consists of many rural counties spread out over vast areas of land, and only a few urban counties in centralized locations. As a result, there is an increasing disparity in economic opportunities for residents in rural counties. Therefore, the aim of the Vibrant Communities program at Utah State University (USU) Extension is to strengthen communities across Utah through facilitated community-focused coalitions and partnerships, entrepreneurship education, and strategic initiatives to facilitate economic and social well-being.

The Impact Of Usu Extension On Public Food Safety, Heidi Leblanc Apr 2023

The Impact Of Usu Extension On Public Food Safety, Heidi Leblanc

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

With a large variety of food products moving through complex distribution systems, food safety is a critical issue for producers, processors, distribution systems, and the final consumer. Foodborne illness is a major cause of death, claiming the lives of our most vulnerable populations; the elderly, young, pregnant women, people with impaired immune function, and the chronically ill. Improper food handling and preparation of food in food service establishments and the home contribute to food-borne illnesses. The Public Food Safety Education program at Utah State University (USU) Extension aims to provide relevant research-based education to Utah residents on best practices to …

The Impact Of Usu Extension On Public Nutrition And Health, Heidi Leblanc

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

There is a need to provide effective nutrition information and education to the public to enable consumers to make wise dietary choices. As the relationships between diet, physical and mental health, and disease prevention become clearer, the promotion of healthy eating behaviors and lifestyles for both youth and adults has received increased attention in recent years. With high levels of obesity, chronic disease, and poor dietary habits, there is a need for non-formal nutrition education that addresses individual and family health and wellness. The Public Nutrition and Health Education program at Utah State University (USU) Extension seeks to decrease the …

Background: Phlebotomy is an invasive procedure associated with pain and iatrogenic anemia. Minimizing phlebotomy for hospitalized children could improve their experience and avoid unnecessary tests. Objective: To describe: 1) the prevalence of phlebotomy-free days among children hospitalized with common conditions and 2) the association of phlebotomy-free days with clinical outcomes. Design/Methods: We performed a multicenter, cross-sectional study of children hospitalized 1/1/2018 to 12/31/2019 with an All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Group (APR-DRG) for common infections across 38 hospitals in the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database. We excluded patients with length of stay (LOS) < 2 days, medical complexity, interhospital transfers, and those receiving intensive care. We defined phlebotomy-free days (PFDs) as hospital days with no laboratory blood testing and measured the proportion of PFDs per hospital day (PFD ratio) for each condition and hospital. Hospitals were grouped into low, moderate and high average PFD ratios. Adjusted outcomes were compared across groups and included LOS, costs, and all-cause 14- and 30-day readmission rates. Results: We identified 126,135 patient encounters (Table 1). Bronchiolitis (N=31,302), non-bacterial gastroenteritis (N=20,430), and pneumonia (N=16,031) accounted for the greatest number of hospital days. Bronchiolitis (0.78) and pneumonia (0.54) had the highest overall PFD ratios, while bone and joint infections (0.28) and non-bacterial gastroenteritis (0.30) had the lowest overall PFD ratios. There was wide variation across hospitals and conditions in PFD ratios (Figure 1). We identified 8 hospitals with low, 21 with moderate, and 9 with high PFD ratios (Figure 1 and Table 1). There were statistically significant but small differences in the distributions of age, payer, and H-RISK among patients in the low, moderate, and high PFD hospital groups (Table 1). There were no differences in adjusted outcomes across low, moderate, and high PFD hospital groups (Table 2). Conclusion(s): Among children hospitalized with common infectious conditions, there was variation across conditions and hospitals in the proportion of PFDs per hospital day. Hospitals with low, moderate and high ratios of PFDs had no differences in outcomes. Our data suggest at least some laboratory overuse and opportunities to improve the experience and care of children hospitalized with infections.

Sepsis-Induced Acute Lung Injury And The Development Of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia In Premature Infants, Jacob S. Ward, Hung-Wen Yeh, Megan Tucker, Venkatesh Sampath

Posters

Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in premature infants with several known risk factors. Recent literature described the harmful effect of inflammation on the developing lung. Recently, we showed that late-onset sepsis (LOS) and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) causes acute lung injury (ALI) in preterm infants as measured by increases in pulmonary severity scores (PSS). The aim of this study was to investigate the association between LOS-induced ALI and BPD outcomes. We hypothesized that LOS would increase the likelihood of developing BPD, and the associated LOS-induced ALI will add to the ability to predict development …
