Transferrin receptor (TFRC) is the major mediator for iron entry into a cell. Under excessive iron conditions, TFRC is expected to be reduced to lower iron uptake and toxicity. However, the mechanism whereby TFRC expression is maintained at high levels in iron-enriched cancer cells and the contribution of TFRC to cancer development are enigmatic. Here the work shows TFRC is induced by adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene loss-driven β-catenin activation in colorectal cancer, whereas TFRC-mediated intratumoral iron accumulation potentiates β-catenin signaling by directly enhancing the activity of tankyrase. Disruption of TFRC leads to a reduction of colonic iron levels and …

A Plague On Both Our Houses, Matthew Carley

The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge

Matthew Carley describes similarities between the traumas often experienced by children who grow up in poverty and the traumas that we hear about with regard to war veterans. Using his own experiences growing up as an example, Carley describes the substance abuse, physical abuse, anger, and neglect that too often are experienced by children in impoverished households. In this essay, he argues for employing on behalf of poor, traumatized children the kinds of programs and interventions that we know to be effective for veterans with PTSD.

Out With The Old And In With The New: Something Museums Always Do, Chloe White

The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge

Chloe White describes the evolution of museums from private collections of curiosities to publicly funded institutions serving the purposes of education, entertainment, and historical preservation. Recounting ways in which museums have adopted technological advances (gramophones, dramagraphs, films, audio guides), White urges museums to employ virtual and augmented reality technologies to revive interest in museums (at a time when people have endless entertainment options available) and to make museums appealing to a wider audience.

Negative Polar Questions And Answers In English And Korean, Keunhyung Park Apr 2023

Negative Polar Questions And Answers In English And Korean, Keunhyung Park

Theses and Dissertations

The meaning of positive polar questions (PPQs) is relatively straightforward, so the truth conditions of PPQs can be decided easily. In contrast, the meaning of negative polar questions (NPQs) may vary, and simple yes-no answers to NPQs have seemingly unpredictable interpretations. For example, a simple yes answer to a PPQ like ‘Did you have lunch today?’ is easily interpreted as ‘I ate lunch.’ In contrast, the same yes answer to an NPQ like ‘Did you not eat lunch today?’ is not obvious out of context. Why are NPQs more ambiguous than PPQs? Based on our empirical observations of the difference …

A Semantic Web Approach To Fault Tolerant Autonomous Manufacturing, Fadi El Kalach

Theses and Dissertations

The next phase of manufacturing is centered on making the switch from traditional automated to autonomous systems. Future Factories are required to be agile, allowing for more customized production, and resistant to disturbances. Such production lines would have the capability to reallocate resources as needed and eliminate downtime while keeping up with market demands. These systems must be capable of complex decision making based on different parameters such as machine status, sensory data, and inspection results. Current manufacturing lines lack this complex capability and instead focus on low level decision making on the machine level without utilizing the generated data …

A Causal Comparative Study Of The Effects Of Physical Activity Course Enrollment On College Students’ Perceived Wellness, Mental Health, And Basic Psychological Needs, Genee’ Regina Glascoe

Theses and Dissertations

On college campuses, there has been an increase in mental health needs among students. In 2019, 56% of students attended counseling for mental health concerns compared to 46% of students who attended in 2010 (The Center for Collegiate Mental Health, 2019). Colleges have begun focusing on student wellness to assist their students with the capability to thrive during their college years and beyond (LaFountaine et al., 2006). Basic psychological needs must be met to achieve psychological growth and wellbeing (Ryan & Deci, 2000b; Zhang et al., 2012). Taliaferro et al. Coordination Of Hydraulic And Morphological Traits Across Dominant Grasses In Eastern Australia, Robert J. Griffin-Nolan, Jeff Chieppa, Alan K. Knapp

Biology

  1. Leaf hydraulic traits characterize plant drought tolerance and responses to climate change. Yet, plant hydraulics are biased towards northern hemisphere woody species. We collected rhizomes of several perennial grass species along a precipitation gradient in eastern Australia and grew them in an experimental pot study to investigate potential trade-offs between drought tolerance and plant morphology.
  2. We measured the following leaf hydraulic traits: the leaf water potential (Ψleaf) at 50% and 88% loss of leaf hydraulic conductance (P50Kleaf and P88Kleaf), the Ψleaf at 50% loss of stomatal conductance (P50gs), leaf turgor loss point (TLP), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), leaf modulus …
