A New Monotypic Genus And Species From China, Langxie Feti Gen. Et Sp. N. (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Victoria Tang, Qingquan Jia, Leonhard Liu

Euscorpius

A new monotypic genus, Langxie gen. n., is described from Xizang (Tibet), China. The new genus shares an important morphological character with Afrolychas Kovařík, 2019: absence of external accessory denticles (EADs) along the sixth row of median denticles (MDs) on the pedipalp movable finger. Langxie gen. n. is different from Afrolychas in the following aspects: loss of EAD near the proximally enlarged MD within each row (i. e., loss of all EAD on the movable finger; this also distinguishes the new genus from other related genera in the “(Ananteris + Isometrus)” clade (Štundlová et …

Standardized Oral Care Regimen In Medical Surgical Hospitalized Patients, Abby Breite

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

-Purpose/goal statement: In medical surgical hospitalized patients, how does nursing staff education on the importance of a standardized oral care regimen in the prevention of non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia, compared to no oral care education, affect the documentation rates of oral care in a 23-day period?

-Relevance to conference themes and objectives: Oral care is considered a routine part of daily care for patients in acute care settings. However, education and implementation of standardized oral care regimens can be lacking (Lounsbury & Munro, 2020). Additionally, documentation of oral care is often overlooked and omitted in the acute care environment (Meehan …

Device Identification And Authentication With Radar And Uwb Ranging, Xiating Zou, Cheng-Jung (Cj) Lee Apr 2023

Device Identification And Authentication With Radar And Uwb Ranging, Xiating Zou, Cheng-Jung (Cj) Lee

Defensive Publications Series

Devices such as tablets and smart displays can be automatically unlocked when a user carrying a compatible wearable device approaches. With user permission, the event of the user being in close proximity is detected, and the user is authenticated by communicating with the wearable device using ultra-wideband (UWB) radio. However, UWB ranging can suffer from front-back ambiguity such that the detection of the presence of a user that is behind the device can unlock the device, which can lead to security and/or privacy risk. This disclosure discloses a two-pronged approach to user identification, user authentication, and front-back disambiguation during automatic …

Precisely Co-Located Cameras With High Geometric And Thermo-Mechanical Stability, Guillermo F. Diaz Lankenau, Antonio Yamil Layón Halun, Andrew Huibers

Defensive Publications Series

Hyper-realistic telepresence is achieved by mounting an array of carefully calibrated cameras on a monitor. High-quality, three-dimensional (3D) telepresence is predicated on highly stable camera positions, e.g., cameras calibrated to a fraction of a millimeter, which, during operation, stay in position to within a fraction of a millimeter. The typical, bezel-mounted camera array in a monitor experiences thermally induced post-calibration positional drift large enough to make hyper-realistic telepresence infeasible. This disclosure describes cameras that are mounted in a manner that leverages the thermal stability and isolation of the cover glass of the monitor to achieve extremely stable camera positioning that …

Pectoralis Nerve Block Compared To Thoracic Paravertebral Nerve Block In The Mastectomy Patient: Evidence-Based Practice Recommendations, Eric Boyer Apr 2023

Pectoralis Nerve Block Compared To Thoracic Paravertebral Nerve Block In The Mastectomy Patient: Evidence-Based Practice Recommendations, Eric Boyer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Patients undergoing a mastectomy are at increased risk of becoming opioid dependent. Most patients undergoing a mastectomy are diagnosed with breast cancer, and the use of opioids is known to aid in cancer metastasizing due to the suppression of the body's natural killer cells. In addition, regional anesthesia, also known as a nerve block, has long provided a reduction in sensation by blocking the nerve pathway, thus numbing the feeling of pain in the operative area. The Pectoralis nerve block (PECS) and the Thoracic Paravertebral block (TPVB) are used in patients undergoing a mastectomy to help reduce the severity of …

A Proposal For The Joint Development Of Generative Ai For The Dispute Resolution Profession, John Lande Apr 2023

A Proposal For The Joint Development Of Generative Ai For The Dispute Resolution Profession, John Lande

Faculty Blogs

This post by Gary Doernhoefer proposes the development of a data set for the dispute resolution profession as the basis for AI systems. The ideal model would be for a collaboration in the dispute resolution field to create the refined data set, establish guardrails, and set privacy parameters for the use of the data. This would involve a centralized advisory board to address concerns such as (1) privacy requirements for how the queries are received, stored, and used, (2) the expertise needed to curate additional training materials, (3) shared costs of development, and (4) gaining the cooperation of industry authors …

Families And Friends Of Homicide Victims’ Experiences With The Healthcare System: A Trauma-Informed Perspective, Jeanna Mastrocinque, R.S. Martino, Wanda Foglia, P. Navratil, J. Metzger, E. A. Cerceo

College of Humanities and Social Sciences Departmental Research

Introduction: Families and friends of homicide victims (FFHV) interact with healthcare systems almost immediately after the traumatic event. Their interactions with healthcare providers can either facilitate healing, have a neutral effect, or compound an already painful experience. When trauma victims are admitted to the hospital, resources are necessarily diverted on their behalf with less consistent attention paid to their families and friends. The interactions surrounding the immediate circumstance as well as experiences in the weeks to months after can have significant long-term impact. This study explores the needs and experiences of FFHV when interacting with the healthcare system to inform …

Climate warming and related drivers of soil thermal change in the Arctic are expected to modify the distribution and dynamics of carbon contained in perennially frozen grounds. Thawing of permafrost in the Mackenzie River watershed of northwestern Canada, coupled with increases in river discharge and coastal erosion, triggers the release of terrestrial organic matter (OMt) from the largest Arctic drainage basin in North America into the Arctic Ocean. While this process is ongoing and its rate is accelerating, the fate of the newly mobilized organic matter as it transits from the watershed through the delta and into the marine system …
