Depression and neurocognitive disorder continue to be the major neuropsychiatric disorders affecting persons with HIV (PWH). The prevalence of major depressive disorder is two to fourfold higher among PWH than the general population (∼6.7%). Prevalence estimates of neurocognitive disorder among PWH range from 25 to over 47% – depending upon the definition used (which is currently evolving), the size of the test battery employed, and the demographic and HIV disease characteristics of the participants included, such as age range and sex distribution. Both major depressive disorder and neurocognitive disorder also result in substantial morbidity and premature mortality. However, though anticipated …

Granzyme A from killer lymphocytes cleaves gasdermin B (GSDMB) and triggers pyroptosis in targeted human tumor cells, eliciting antitumor immunity. However, GSDMB has a controversial role in pyroptosis and has been linked to both anti- and protumor functions. Here, we found that GSDMB splicing variants are functionally distinct. Cleaved N-terminal (NT) fragments of GSDMB isoforms 3 and 4 caused pyroptosis, but isoforms 1, 2, and 5 did not. The nonfunctional isoforms have a deleted or modified exon 6 and therefore lack a stable belt motif. The belt likely contributes to the insertion of oligomeric GSDMB-NTs into the membrane. Consistently, noncytotoxic …

Dirofilaria immitis (the canine heartworm) is widespread in the tropics, with prevalence surpassing 30% in high-risk areas. In addition to the suitable climatic conditions that favour mosquito abundance and filarial larva development, there is low compliance with the recommended year-round use of preventives in these transmission hotspots. This represents a major concern, considering that melarsomine (first-line heartworm adulticide) is unavailable in several tropical countries, resulting in the so-called slow-kill protocol being the only available adulticide treatment option. In this article, the members of TroCCAP (Tropical Council for Companion Animal Parasites) review the current distribution of heartworm in the tropics and …
The Dental Workforce Recruitment And Retention Crisis In The Uk, Deborah Evans, Ian Mills, Lorna Burns, Marie Bryce, Sally Hanks
The Dental Workforce Recruitment And Retention Crisis In The Uk, Deborah Evans, Ian Mills, Lorna Burns, Marie Bryce, Sally Hanks
Peninsula Dental School
The precarious state of NHS dentistry is widely acknowledged, yet there is limited progress in addressing the underlying issues. Further delays will undoubtedly impact patient care, leading to oral health deterioration and unnecessary suffering. This will predominantly affect the most vulnerable in society, resulting in greater oral health inequalities. The underlying issues contributing to the current NHS dental crisis are many, and they include: prolonged delays in contract reform; long-term underinvestment; private sector growth; and fewer dentists working full-time and/or in the NHS. In England, an NHS dental contract that fails to promote prevention or equality of access continues to …

Glioma is a rare brain tumor with a poor prognosis. Familial glioma is a subset of glioma with a strong genetic predisposition that accounts for approximately 5% of glioma cases. We performed whole-genome sequencing on an exploratory cohort of 203 individuals from 189 families with a history of familial glioma and an additional validation cohort of 122 individuals from 115 families. We found significant enrichment of rare deleterious variants of seven genes in both cohorts, and the most significantly enriched gene was HERC2 (P = 0.0006). Furthermore, we identified rare noncoding variants in both cohorts that were predicted to …

This review article discusses the potential of hyperpolarized (HP) 13C magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) as a noninvasive technique for identifying altered metabolism in various cancer types. Hyperpolarization significantly improves the signal-to-noise ratio for the identification of 13C-labeled metabolites, enabling dynamic and real-time imaging of the conversion of [1-13C] pyruvate to [1-13C] lactate and/or [1-13C] alanine. The technique has shown promise in identifying upregulated glycolysis in most cancers, as compared to normal cells, and detecting successful treatment responses at an earlier stage than multiparametric MRI in breast and prostate cancer patients. The review provides a concise overview of the applications …

Managing Epilepsy In People With Intellectual Disabilities – Creating Capable Communities, R Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Almost a quarter of people with intellectual disabilities have epilepsy. This life-long condition adversely affects their health, safety and well-being and carries an increased risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in this population. This commentary considers what not only health and social services but also communities and people with intellectual disabilities themselves can do to improve outcomes.
Cvam: Cna Profile Inference Of The Spatial Transcriptome Based On The Vgae And Hmm, Xiaobo Zhou
Cvam: Cna Profile Inference Of The Spatial Transcriptome Based On The Vgae And Hmm, Xiaobo Zhou
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Tumors are often polyclonal due to copy number alteration (CNA) events. Through the CNA profile, we can understand the tumor heterogeneity and consistency. CNA information is usually obtained through DNA sequencing. However, many existing studies have shown a positive correlation between the gene expression and gene copy number identified from DNA sequencing. With the development of spatial transcriptome technologies, it is urgent to develop new tools to identify genomic variation from the spatial transcriptome. Therefore, in this study, we developed CVAM, a tool to infer the CNA profile from spatial transcriptome data. Compared with existing tools, CVAM integrates the spatial …

Metals And Alloys As Catalytic Hosts Of Sulfur Cathode For Lithium-Sulfur Batteries, Zhen-Yu Wang, Xue-Ping Gao
Journal of Electrochemistry
Lithium-sulfur batteries are recognized as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage devices, owing to the high theoretical energy density of 2600 Wh·kg–1. However, their application has been seriously hindered by the sluggish electrochemical reaction kinetics of elemental sulfur and discharged products (Li2S2/Li2S), and the notorious “shuttle effect” of soluble intermediate lithium polysulfide species, leading to poor cycle stability, low sulfur utilization and inferior coulombic efficiency. Introducing catalytic hosts into sulfur cathode is an efficient path to propel the conversion of sulfur-contained species, thus preventing the dissolution and loss of active-sulfur …
Using Emotion Regulation To Support Informed Literacy, Rachael A. Vandonkelaar
Using Emotion Regulation To Support Informed Literacy, Rachael A. Vandonkelaar
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
When it comes to fake news, no medium circulates and reaches more youth than social media. Social media can provide an opportunity for students to create and post with an authentic audience; however, social media can also perpetuate the danger of fake news. Youth across the globe emotionally engage with content several hours a day and can become vulnerable to the clickbait style of news. Therefore, although research has studied how critical literacy instruction supports informed reading, literacy instruction must also address students’ emotional regulation needs. This research-to-practice article describes the dangers of fake news on youth interactions and provides …

Behind The Scenes Of Controversial International Commercial Arbitration: Case Study Of Heirs To The Sultanate Of Sulu V. Malaysia, Tze Chin Ong, James Ding Tse Wen
Indonesian Journal of International Law
Recently, an ad hoc arbitration final award of US$14.92 billion (approximately RM62.59 billion) in favour of the heirs of the 19th-century sultanate, the late Sultan of Sulu, Sultan Jamalul Kiram II against Malaysia (the “Award”) that was handed down by a sole arbitrator had created much discussion in the international public and private law arena. Following the issuance of the n Award, Malaysia challenged the Award in the Paris Court of Appeal and successfully stayed the Award’s enforcement in France on July 12. During the same time, on July 11, two Luxembourg-registered subsidiaries of the Malaysian …

Two Roads Diverged In A Yellow Wood And I Have Taken Them Both: Tales From A New Ir Librarian, Allison Boswell
Southern Miss Institutional Repository Conference
The first road:
When Houston Cole Library started an Institutional Repository (IR) at Jacksonville State University, reading all of the journal articles and literature and watching all of the webinars on how to make an IR work was a must. One of the top recommendations was to cultivate buy-in. The standard recommended process for getting buy-in did not work for me and my faculty. Everything I tried did not work. It was a ton of work, a lot of hope, and even more disappointment. I had to come up with a new plan if the IR was going to succeed. …

Women And The Precarity Of War: Reading Women Militants And Activists In Sharmila Seyyid’S Ummath, Aparna Nandha
Journal of International Women's Studies
Ummath, written by Sharmila Seyyid, navigates the sensitive topic of the precarious lives of three separate women amid the chaos of war-torn Sri Lanka. The stories of main characters Yoga and Theivanai demonstrate women’s challenges in and out of militancy. Their struggles led them to Thawakkul, a Muslim social worker devoted to the cause of rehabilitating disabled and widowed women who once served the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam). Ummath provides a powerful social critique of the conditions that aggravated the separatist conflict, the stigmatization of women who become part of the LTTE, the inexorable violence perpetrated by …

Changing Ideologies Of Marriage In Contemporary Indian Women’S Novels, Bhushan Sharma
Changing Ideologies Of Marriage In Contemporary Indian Women’S Novels, Bhushan Sharma
Journal of International Women's Studies
Marriage in Hinduism is sacramental in nature and considered a divine religious bond. As per Shastras, man alone is incomplete until or unless he marries. The wife is called Ardhangini (half of man) or dharmapatni, who shares religious duties with her husband. This paper views matrimony from a feminist lens and explores the changing ideology of marriage by drawing upon feminist theory. The study uses two novels by contemporary Indian women writers, Shashi Deshpande's A Matter of Time (1996) and Shobhaa De's Second Thoughts (1996), to explore the world of married women. These novels by Indian women express women’s …

Beautiful, Sexy, And Happy Celebrities: Perfect Mothers Or Instamoms, Ebru Güzel
Journal of International Women's Studies
The development of information technologies and the Internet has created an enormous economy. In line with this digital transformation, cultural change has come about. Global companies create new trends focused on vanity and pleasure in social media that follow the patriarchal capitalist ideology. Motherhood has also been included in this process, and “perfect motherhood,” as an extension to new generation motherhood, has been popularized on social media. Perfect motherhood requires mothers who are responsible for looking after children and the home to also be successful in their professional and personal lives while looking beautiful, young, chic, sexy, and fit. Recently …

Child Sexual Abuse And Exploitation Through Livestreaming In Indonesia: Unequal Power Relations At The Root Of Child Victimization, Ni Luh Tasya Prathisthita Tanaya, Ni Made Martini Puteri
Journal of International Women's Studies
Child sexual abuse and exploitation through livestreaming is a rising phenomenon of online child sexual abuse and exploitation in Indonesia. This phenomenon takes place in both offline and online spaces. Moreover, due to the active involvement of the viewers, these content viewers can also be considered as offenders. Thus, it is necessary to recognize this phenomenon as a crime against children, instead of merely a sexual act. By using a criminology perspective, this research explores the roots of this phenomenon, the impact on survivors, and the child protection system’s actions against it. This qualitative study used secondary data analysis, derived …
Masculinist Constructions Of Nationalism In India: Gender, Body Politics, And Hindi Cinema, Nupur Ray
Masculinist Constructions Of Nationalism In India: Gender, Body Politics, And Hindi Cinema, Nupur Ray
Journal of International Women's Studies
Nationalism is an evocative concept with multiple philosophies around its meanings, purposes and contentions. Symbols, imagery, and spectacle play an important role in cultural expressions of nationalism that sustain an emotional response. The paper argues that imaginative constructs of nationalism in India are primarily constructed around women’s bodily metaphors, sexual norms, and their maternal roles in families. Popular culture, particularly cinema, tends to reinforce power hierarchies in which women symbolizing the nation are in need of protection by men or the state as a masculine authority. Hindi cinema has been an integral part of the socio-cultural lives of people in …

Who Is To Blame? African Feminism, Human Rights, And Sexual Violence Against Izintombi (Virgins) In South Africa, Goodness Thandi Ntuli
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article highlights the intensifying prevalence of sexual violence in South Africa, which affects women including izintombi (virgins, also known as Zulu maidens). Ubuntombi (virginity) traditionally represented a typical identity marker of young-womanhood in the indigenous lives of Zulus. As an aftermath of colonialism and imperialism, the cultural importance of women’s virginity faded into the past with only sporadic survival in some rural areas of South Africa. For some reasons, it was visibly revived together with virginity-testing as public events in the 1980s and 1990s. The practice of virginity-testing was criticized by some scholars, human rights and gender activists, who …

Converging Crises And The Cost Of Exclusion: Unveiling The Invisible Women Of Sri Lanka’S Economy, Lihini Ratwatte
Journal of International Women's Studies
In Sri Lanka, women’s labor force participation has never exceeded 35% in over three decades. As of 2022, the country was ranked 110 out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Gender Gap Index. The gaps in women’s participation in the formal economy alongside women’s limited political empowerment are two leading causes for the country to be lagging in such global gender equality indicators. At a large cost to the economy, the existence of archaic gender norms that promulgate women’s unpaid care work often exclude women from the formal labor force. This paper dissects the socio-economic and socio-political factors …

Globalization And Migration: The Great Gender Equalizer?, Akm Ahsan Ullah, Sharifah Nurul Huda Alkaff, Shirley Chin Wei Lee, Diotima Chattoraj, Jannatul Ferdous
Journal of International Women's Studies
Globalization has been extensively debated in a range of contexts, from trade to borders, international relations, and conflict. It appears to be a positive force for women as many scholars contend that it has offered women new opportunities, thus enhancing greater gender equality in many countries where traditional patriarchal structures are firmly entrenched. However, some scholars are more skeptical of the benefits of globalization for women. They note that despite women gaining an increasing share of employment opportunities in a globalized world, the expected redistribution of domestic, household, and childcare responsibilities often did not materialize. They also argue that multinational …
