Brining Point-Of-Care Ultrasound To A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Caleb E. Migda
Brining Point-Of-Care Ultrasound To A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Caleb E. Migda
Masters Projects
Background and Objectives: In the rural primary care setting, the process for outpatient
ultrasound testing has multiple steps, all of which provide opportunities for delay in testing and diagnosis. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a solution that allows the physician to perform same-day ultrasound in the primary care clinic. The objective of this program development project was to implement POCUS in a rural primary care clinic to reduce time to testing and diagnosis for those patients requiring ultrasound testing.
Methods: A 3-month chart audit was conducted to examine the average length of time required to complete ultrasound testing in the outpatient …
Improving Utilization Of Clinical Pharmacy Services In A Health Professional Shortage Area, Samantha E. Tallman
Improving Utilization Of Clinical Pharmacy Services In A Health Professional Shortage Area, Samantha E. Tallman
Masters Projects
Background: Integration of clinical pharmacy specialists (CPS) into primary care has increased over the last decade. CPS are highly educated advanced practice providers and specialize in chronic disease and medication management, and offer additional support to both patients and PCPs. Despite their extensive training and expertise, the role of CPS is often unknown or misunderstood amongst PCPs and results in the underutilization of CPS services. As a result, referrals to their service remain low. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to increase referrals to embedded CPS and identify encounter types by associated diagnoses.
Objectives: Develop and implement a …
The Intersection Of Herbicide Policy, Exposure, And Health At The University Of Connecticut, Katherine Hayward
The Intersection Of Herbicide Policy, Exposure, And Health At The University Of Connecticut, Katherine Hayward
Honors Scholar Theses
Pesticides play an extremely complicated role in our everyday lives. From the water you use to make your coffee, to the breastmilk your neighbor provides for their child, to the lake your dog swims in, chemical pesticides or their byproducts have been found in nearly every corner of our lives. The chemicals used in synthetic herbicides, a subcategory of pesticides, have far reaching negative impacts on human health, biodiversity, and water quality. Despite there being numerous published studies on the relationships between pesticide exposures and health, there is still ongoing discord and controversy surrounding their role in our lives. After …

The Curia Julia: Its History, Materials, Use, And Preservation Through The Centuries, Katharine Bogen
The Curia Julia: Its History, Materials, Use, And Preservation Through The Centuries, Katharine Bogen
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The Curia Julia has one of the most fascinating histories out of all the buildings in Rome. Julius Caesar began its construction in 44 BCE in the Forum Romanum as the meeting place for the Roman Senate, and it continued to serve as such until the eventual fall of the Roman Empire. Today, the building stands almost completely intact, a feat that is not common for other structures of the same period. The reason why it has remained standing for so many centuries is due to its history of use: it was transformed into a church in the 7th century …
Understanding The Expression And Role Of Pros-1 In The Male Gonad Of C. Elegans, Jack Bozik
Understanding The Expression And Role Of Pros-1 In The Male Gonad Of C. Elegans, Jack Bozik
Undergraduate Theses
The gene pros-1 is a transcription factor that is highly expressed within neuronal sheath cells, glial cells, and excretory canal cells. pros-1 plays a role in cell determination of those cell types in the nematode C. elegans, which promotes organismal development. But the degree to which pros-1 presence is important is still not fully understood, because there are many genes involved in development that when mutated or damaged can result in unexpected phenotypes or even total loss of function to a certain developmental mechanism. What makes pros-1 valuable to research is that it is a functional homologue to a …
Using Crispr To Genetically Engineer Two Genes Involved In Gonadogenesis In The Model Organism C. Elegans, Peyton Young
Using Crispr To Genetically Engineer Two Genes Involved In Gonadogenesis In The Model Organism C. Elegans, Peyton Young
Undergraduate Theses
C. elegans is a nematode model organism commonly used in research because of its small size and similarity to humans. Of the known protein sequences of C. elegans, 40%-80% have human homologous genes, making C. elegans an ideal organism for study of human proteins (Lai et al. 2000). Additionally, there are two sexes of C. elegans, male and hermaphrodite. Of the two sexes, this research focuses on the males, especially the development of the gonad and the genes involved in this process. Two genes were chosen for study, C10E2.6 and pig-1, based on essentiality and mRNA expression …
Reshaping The Historical Narrative: Muslims In North Africa, Mariam Sultan
Reshaping The Historical Narrative: Muslims In North Africa, Mariam Sultan
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Immigration of diverse peoples to America has been continuous since the 16th century, especially in regards to Muslims, who have been an understudied and underrepresented group in historical literature, despite constituting a major faction of the first peoples in this country. The study reinforces why Muslims should be part of the historic narrative including the many contributions they made to the growth and development of the United States, and more broadly, the North American continent.

Comparing A Non-Word Repetition Task Performance To A Standardized Morphosyntax Measure In Bilingual Spanish-English Children, Emily Freeman
Comparing A Non-Word Repetition Task Performance To A Standardized Morphosyntax Measure In Bilingual Spanish-English Children, Emily Freeman
Honors Capstones
To diagnose a child with a language impairment, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) most often rely on standardized norm-referenced assessment tools. However, current norm-referenced assessment tools used to make speech-language diagnostic decisions are often not representative of the linguistic variability observed in many children in the United States. This issue creates a need for bias free assessment tools. One approach to help reduce bias in assessment is the use of processing-based tasks. These tasks attempt to reduce bias by focusing on overall skills such as memory and eliminate the reliance on prior linguistic knowledge. One processing-based measure that has shown diagnostic potential …

The Color Of Sound: An Insight On Chromesthesia, Lupe Rodriguez
Honors Capstones
Many people can see with their eyes, but there are some people who can see through sound. Chromesthesia is when sound involuntarily evokes an experience of color through shapes and movement. The goal of this project is to show what this experience is like and give people an opportunity to experience it in a way themselves.

Cryptocurrency And The Stock Market, Can We Trust Them?, Natalie Snead
Honors College Theses
Cryptocurrency is a relatively new investment method and currency. Daily, the news media reports about its instability and the perceptions surrounding it. To provide a measure of its perceived stability and trustworthiness, I have conducted a survey of undergraduate and graduate students in various accounting courses. The questions asked in this survey are used to gauge the overall perceptions and opinions of students concerning the stock market and cryptocurrency. The survey uses a five point opinion ranking system, ranging in opinions from 1-5 (strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, and strongly agree). This survey is also used in conjunction with questions …

From Fiber Bragg Gratings To Coaxial Cable Bragg Gratings: One-Dimensional Microwave Quasi-Periodic Photonic Crystals, Chen Zhu, Osamah Alsalman, Jie Huang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Coaxial cables and optical fibers are two types of cylindrical waveguides used in telecommunications. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) have found successful applications in various fields, such as optical communications, fiber lasers, and fiber-optic sensing. In this paper, we propose and numerically investigate the implementations of various fiber Bragg configurations, including uniform, chirped, apodized, and phase-shifted configurations, on coaxial cables to generate the corresponding special types of coaxial cable Bragg gratings (CCBGs). The simulation results of different CCBGs match well with the well-known FBG theories. It is demonstrated that the reflection spectrum of a CCBG can be flexibly tailored by introducing …
The Perks Of Being Human, Max Stul Oppenheimer
The Perks Of Being Human, Max Stul Oppenheimer
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
The power of artificial intelligence has recently entered the public consciousness, prompting debates over numerous legal issues raised by use of the tool. Among the questions that need to be resolved is whether to grant intellectual property rights to copyrightable works or patentable inventions created by a machine, where there is no human intervention sufficient to grant those rights to the human. Both the U. S. Copyright Office and the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office have taken the position that in cases where there is no human author or inventor, there is no right to copyright or patent protection. …

Using Machine Learning To Measure Political Polarization On Social Media, Veronica Cagle
Using Machine Learning To Measure Political Polarization On Social Media, Veronica Cagle
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Polarization in the political sphere, seen through combative communication and stalemate, may impose negative social impacts on the population. Attempting to measure political polarization in the masses through self-reported surveys and interviews can present response biases of social desirability. The classification of thought freely written online allows political polarization to be measured in an impartial manner. Reddit is one application that enables users to share opinions and create discussions anonymously; this text can be used to measure the political climate at any given time. Disagreement has grown over the perceived level of polarization in our society. The purpose of my …
The Creation Of Political Survival Strategies By Black Collegiate Women On Virginia’S Predominantly White Campuses, Maya Jenkins
The Creation Of Political Survival Strategies By Black Collegiate Women On Virginia’S Predominantly White Campuses, Maya Jenkins
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
The University of Mary Washington is a liberal arts institution founded in 1908 as a normal and industrial school for women (Our History - About UMW, 2015). Because of its small size, Mary Washington was historically known as Virginia’s “undiscovered gem” (Boyer, 2011). Mary Washington is described as a place built to support the “innovative, passionate, intellectual, and genuine” (Boyer, 2011). However, in 2020, the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Tony McDade and a racial protest that took place near the college’s campus caused many Black collegiate women at Mary Washington to question if their university was built to support …
