Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore May 2023

Effects Of Matching Images Of Natural And Built Environments On Delay Discounting: A Systematic Replication Of Berry Et Al. (2014), Elizabeth Fillmore

Theses

Decision making is heavily influenced by the environment around us. Berry et al. (2014, 2015, 2019) showed that viewing images of natural environments during the delay discounting task resulted in lower impulsive choice, as compared to viewing images of built environments or geometric figures. Berry et al. proposed that attentional factors could explain this effect, however, recent attempts to reproduce Berry et al.’s findings in a different laboratory have been unsuccessful (Johnson 2017, 2018, 2019). The present study tested if manipulating the participants’ observing responses towards different types of images (natural, built, and no images) modulates the effect reported by …

Multi-Species Trophic Response In Tributaries Of The Ohio River Along A Gradient Of An Invasive Planktivore, Justin Kowalski May 2023

Multi-Species Trophic Response In Tributaries Of The Ohio River Along A Gradient Of An Invasive Planktivore, Justin Kowalski

Theses

1. Aquatic invasive species often have a gradient of abundance along connected systems as invasion occurs. Invading species effects on native species may not be apparent when the species first colonizes a new area but as abundance of the invader increases they may have detrimental effects to native ecosystems even when not fully established. 2. A gradient of Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) abundance in the Ohio River exists as invasion has been slowed by the many navigation dams that exist on the river. I examined how the isotopic niche of four native species differed along the Silver Carp gradient in …

Building Academic Language Proficiency For English Learners, Abha Gupta May 2023

Building Academic Language Proficiency For English Learners, Abha Gupta

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

Academic language proficiency is essential for success in school, especially for English Learners (ELs). However, it is a skill which receives little attention. Many ELs frequently exit from language assistance programs because they perform well on social language tests and sound proficient in language interchange, due to strong basic interpersonal communication skills. However, they may still struggle in content areas due to poor academic language proficiency. This article’s main goals are to illustrate the value of academic language comprehension and offer teaching techniques that will help ELs develop this skill. These strategies, which play to English Learners’ strengths, incorporate cognates …

Inter-Police Interactions And Mental Health Attitudes, Isaiah A. Jonas May 2023

Inter-Police Interactions And Mental Health Attitudes, Isaiah A. Jonas

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the United States police officers are constantly impacted from multiple different sources. Previous literature, such as Karaffa and Koch (2016) have investigated the way that influence from police administrations and peers can create a stigma in police officers. The stigma in question is officers' stigma towards seeking mental health treatment. Peer influence has been one of the focuses of research on ways to combat this stigma in law enforcement. Kumar (2019) has established that when within police culture there are differences between the views of rookies and senior officers. These differences have yet to be properly explored throughout the …

Emotion Regulation As A Mediator Between A History Of Childhood Maltreatment And Present Levels Of Self-Compassion, Jessica Renaud May 2023

Emotion Regulation As A Mediator Between A History Of Childhood Maltreatment And Present Levels Of Self-Compassion, Jessica Renaud

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Self-Compassion is a rising topic in the world of research. It has three main components: mindfulness, common humanity, and self-kindness (Scoglio et al., 2018). Childhood maltreatment can have long-lasting negative impacts on one’s mental and emotional health, which can affect one’s levels of self-compassion. Emotion regulation can potentially play a role in this association by mitigating the effects of childhood maltreatment on later self-compassion. In addition, the relations between these three concepts and their subtypes or components were examined to further research on these topics in general. The sample consisted of 113 college students from a lower-level psychology course. They …

Frequency Specific Hearing Assessment Noise: Minimum Response Levels And Response Times In The Pediatric Population, Justine Louise Wright May 2023

Frequency Specific Hearing Assessment Noise: Minimum Response Levels And Response Times In The Pediatric Population, Justine Louise Wright

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Pediatric audiological testing typically consists of using sound field testing for children six months to two years of age. It is conducted with a child seated in the center of a sound booth with speakers located on the right and left sides of the patient at varying degrees each with an object to reinforce their response. This sound field testing is completed using one of two stimuli: narrowband noise or warbled tones. A newer noise, referred to as frequency specific hearing assessment (FRESH) noise. was created to be used specifically for pediatric patients to grab their attention and respond faster …

Otoacoustic Emissions: A Case Study Before, During, & After Pregnancy, Leah Eleanor Mccaslin May 2023

Otoacoustic Emissions: A Case Study Before, During, & After Pregnancy, Leah Eleanor Mccaslin

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Several researchers have documented changes in auditory function throughout pregnancy (Kwatra et al., 2019; Sennaroglu & Belgin, 2001; Tandon et al., 1990). These studies, however, have not examined changes to otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). Otoacoustic emissions are an objective measure that have been shown to be more sensitive to differences in biological sex (Cassidy & Ditty, 2001; Dunckley & Dreisbach, 2004; Keogh et al., 2001; McFadden et al., 2006) and to changes in the female menstrual and ovarian cycles (Arruda & Monteiro de Castro Silva, 2008; Gurbuzler et al., 2012; Yellin & Stillman, 1999). The purpose of this study was to …

Development Of A Comprehensive Primary Care Algorithm To Manage Children Who Are Overweight Or Obese, Erika Leann Almeida-Trujillo

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Childhood obesity is an epidemic that continues to increase not only in the United States but also worldwide. For children aged 5-19 years, being overweight is considered a body mass index greater than one standard deviation above the growth reference median and obesity is defined as excess body fat that contributes to functional loss and life-threatening comorbidities. The literature indicated that previous population-based obesity prevention efforts have only been moderately successful and might not reflect the complex needs and preferences of some children and families. Thus, there was a need for individualized interventions that supported children who are overweight or …

Investigation Into The Roles Of Esxa N-Α-Acetylation In Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis And Potential Host-Binding Proteins, Javier Aguilera May 2023

Investigation Into The Roles Of Esxa N-Α-Acetylation In Pathogenesis Of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis And Potential Host-Binding Proteins, Javier Aguilera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

EsxA (6-kDa early secreted antigenic target, ESAT-6) is a critical virulence factor of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). EsxA is secreted in a heterodimer with EsxB (10-kDa culture filtrate protein, CFP-10) through the Type VII secretion system of Mtb, called ESX-1. The dissociation of EsxA and EsxB heterodimer (EsxA:B), upon acidification, is required for EsxA to penetrate into the phagosomal membranes, which has been implicated in Mtb translocation from the phagosome to the cytosol. However, the mechanism of EsxA:B dissociation is not clear. In this study, we investigated the role of N-α-acetylation of EsxA in the heterodimer dissociation, mycobacterial cytosolic translocation, and …

Critical Preface1.1 Scope

In Native American traditions, dreams are a significant part of their culture. They are believed to help one connect or communicate with the spiritual world. This ability is not limited to warriors or medicine men, anyone may contribute to the spiritual knowledge of the tribe. Many nations seek visions at a young age, and children are asked about their dreams. Each tribe across the country has a different way they may interpret the dreams. Typically, dreams often have a metaphorical/symbolic, literal, or prophetic meaning.

Whereas, in many non-indigenous cultures, individuals see dreams as something to be forgotten, …

Comparison Of Different Robust Methods In Linear Regression And Applications In Cardiovascular Data, Jagannath Das May 2023

Comparison Of Different Robust Methods In Linear Regression And Applications In Cardiovascular Data, Jagannath Das

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Due to advanced technology and wide source of data collection, high-dimensional data is available in several fields, including healthcare, bioinformatics, medicine, epidemiology, economics, finance, sociology, and climatology. In those datasets, outliers are generally encountered due to technical errors, heterogeneous sources, or the effect of some confounding variables. As outliers are often difficult to detect in high-dimensional data, the standard approaches may fail to model such data and produce misleading information. In this thesis, we studied Huber and Tukey's M-estimators for linear regression that automatically down-weight outliers and provide a good fit. We also investigated two variable selection methods -- LASSO …
