Assessing The Performance Of High-Rap Mixtures Incorporating Crude Vegetable Oils And An Antioxidant From Mechanical, Environmental, And Economic Perspectives, Nitish R. Bastola
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Utilization of mixtures with high amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the pavement industry is limited because of the adverse effects of aged materials in recycled asphalt materials. To date, numerous approaches have been used to reduce the adversity of RAP in mixtures. One such approach is the use of recycling agents (RAs) from various sources, such as petroleum and bio-oil. However, the current need is to maximize the use of RAP by adopting a sustainable source of RAs. Therefore, this study uses two RAs based on vegetable oils (crude soybean oil and crude corn oil) with high-RAP mixtures …

The sharing of private information is a daunting, multifaceted, and expensive undertaking. Furthermore, identity management is an additional challenge that poses significant technological, operational, and legal obstacles. Present solutions and their accompanying infrastructures rely on centralized models that are susceptible to hacking and can hinder data control by the rightful owner. Consequently, blockchain technology has generated interest in the fields of identity and access control. This technology is viewed as a potential solution due to its ability to offer decentralization, transparency, provenance, security, and privacy benefits. Nevertheless, a completely decentralized and private solution that enables data owners to control their …
The Impact Of Local Broadband Access On High School Graduation Rates, Eugen Brazdil
The Impact Of Local Broadband Access On High School Graduation Rates, Eugen Brazdil
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The United States government has been funding infrastructure expansions and upgrades to bring Internet access to schools and households. While this broadband funding has increased access and adoption, it is unclear how improvements in Internet access affect student performance because Internet access has both productivity and distraction effects. The Internet provides students with access to vast amounts of educational content, instructional videos and other valuable resources that increase productivity. It also provides students access to social media, video games and other forms of entertainment that distract students and reduce student performance. While the literature shows that advances in technology (computers) …

Background: The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) defines health literacy as the degree to which an individual has the capacity to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. In the emergency department (ED), it is estimated that the prevalence of inadequate health literacy can reach as high as 88 percent. There is a need to implement literacy-sensitive interventions in the ED. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to engineer an intervention that explored the feasibility of the use of personal technology to deliver video-based education to adult …
Studies Of Forward Projection Algorithms And Implementation On Pc And Fpga, Minsung Cho
Studies Of Forward Projection Algorithms And Implementation On Pc And Fpga, Minsung Cho
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis first aims to understand how a part of the computed tomography (CT) algorithm called “forward projector” (FP) works and how it can be accelerated at a hardware level. Two methods of FP are defined and studied: pixel-driven and ray-driven. Both methods fundamentally use the property of line integral and Bresenham’s algorithm. As the result of the study of the two FP methods, the ray-driven algorithm implemented in C++ performed 35% faster than the pixe-driven algorithm implemented in Python. This thesis implements the ray-driven forward projector algorithm using field-programmable gate array (FPGA), making use of hardware-acceleration techniques. The result shows …
Lumbopelvic Biomechanics And Muscle Performance In Individuals With Unilateral Transfemoral Amputation: Implications For Lower Back Pain, Jason Ciccotelli
Lumbopelvic Biomechanics And Muscle Performance In Individuals With Unilateral Transfemoral Amputation: Implications For Lower Back Pain, Jason Ciccotelli
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Many people with lower extremity amputation (LEA) experience lower back pain (LBP). The amount of pain they experienced can be debilitating and severely interferes with activities of daily living. Previous studies have explored LBP in populations without LEA, and the evidence is also growing within the limb loss population. However, the mechanism for the high prevalence of LBP after LEA remains unclear. The lower back muscles, specifically the multifidi muscles, play an important role in stabilization of the spine during motion, and LBP has been associated with decreased mobility in patient populations, but the degree of dysfunction in the spinal …

On Outflows Due To Radiation, Randall Cody Dannen
On Outflows Due To Radiation, Randall Cody Dannen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Observations of ionized AGN outflows have provided compelling evidence that the radiation field transfers both momentum and energy to the plasma. At parsec scale distances in AGN, energy transfer can dominate, in which case the only force needed to launch an outflow is due to gas pressure. Much closer to the black hole, gravity dominates thermal energy due to insufficient heating by the radiation and the gas is in the so-called ’cold wind solution’ regime. Only magnetic or radiation forces can lead to outflow, but it is unclear how these forces depend on the spectral energy distribution (SED) and the …
Outside, Looking In: A Dissertation On Mindful Walking And How Green Exercise Affects State Mindfulness And Connectedness To Nature, Dustin Wyatt Davis
Outside, Looking In: A Dissertation On Mindful Walking And How Green Exercise Affects State Mindfulness And Connectedness To Nature, Dustin Wyatt Davis
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
INTRODUCTION: Mindfulness, green exercise, and connectedness to nature are increasingly popular topics among academics and the public. These three topics overlap in the underexplored area called mindful green exercise. Mindful green exercise is a blend of mindful exercise and green exercise. Mindful exercise is physical exercise during which people pay attention on purpose without judgment to each new present moment. The person applies an accepting awareness to internal phenomena (thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations) and external phenomena (objects and events in the environment). Green exercise is exercise performed outdoors in natural environments. Despite its name, green exercise does not only …
Mena Terrorism And The West: Explaining Why Terrorist Groups From The Middle East And North Africa Target Western Democracies, Michael A. Defeo
Mena Terrorism And The West: Explaining Why Terrorist Groups From The Middle East And North Africa Target Western Democracies, Michael A. Defeo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Terrorist groups from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remain one of the most formidable threats to international security. While their organization and motives have been significantly different over time, a commonality is that they tend to disproportionately target Western democracies. This dissertation argues that this trend is mainly a consequence of the foreign policies that these states pursue in the region. These policies, in terms of support for Israel and interventionism, are theorized as being the precipitous causes of MENA terrorism. Likewise, it is argued that the democratic institutions and extents of globalization in these states are …
Evaluating Risk-Appropriate Perinatal Care In Nevada, Janice Enriquez
Evaluating Risk-Appropriate Perinatal Care In Nevada, Janice Enriquez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In the United States, (U.S.) technological advancement and increased accessibility to health care resources have not deterred the increasing maternal morbidity and mortality rates (CDC, 2022). In 2019, 754 maternal deaths were reported; in 2020, 861 deaths were reported. In a span of one year, the maternal mortality rate increased by 14% (CDC,2022). American Indian/Alaska Native and Black birthing people are 2 to 3 times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White birthing people (CDC, 2019). 80% percent of all pregnancy related deaths can be prevented (CDC, 2022). Risk-appropriate care is a strategy used to improve perinatal …
Developmental Differences In School Climate Predictors Of Chronic School Absenteeism, Michael Fensken
Developmental Differences In School Climate Predictors Of Chronic School Absenteeism, Michael Fensken
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
School attendance problems (SAPs) represent a critical developmental challenge for youth. SAPs represent a spectrum from difficulties attending school despite complete school attendance to complete absence. Ongoing SAPs can lead to chronic absenteeism, which may be defined as missing 8.3–10.0% (15–18 days) of school in an academic year. However, debate exists over the utility of a demarcation for chronic absenteeism. A shortcoming of cutoffs to defining problematic chronic absenteeism is that demographic, academic, symptom, and family variables are not delineated clearly. Yet, the present intervention frameworks (e.g., multi-tiered systems of supports models; MTSS) rely on clear delineations of such variables …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Does participation in a sleep hygiene educational module improve perceived ability to practice habits supporting increased engagement for leisure occupations in UNLV students? Sleep hygiene refers to a set of rules or practices to promote and allow for better sleep quality. Poor sleep quality is a prevalent problem among college students due to numerous reasons, including poor sleep hygiene. Since there is a strong correlation between poor sleep quality and daily function and given that occupational therapists assist clients to function optimally in activities of daily living despite impairment, it is essential to expand this area of practice to include …
Black Girl Magic: History, Identity, And Spirituality In Contemporary Fantasy And Science-Fiction, Taylore Fox
Black Girl Magic: History, Identity, And Spirituality In Contemporary Fantasy And Science-Fiction, Taylore Fox
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In 2013, activist and social media influencer CaShawn Thompson composed a Tweet claiming, “Black Girls Are Magic,” which shortened to the hashtag “#BlackGirlMagic.” As the hashtag began to circulate social media, the phrase birthed a digital movement that celebrated the beauty, accomplishments, and mere presence of Black women and girls. This project argues that Black Girl Magic, operating as a social and literary framework, combats the injustice, inequality, and lack of respect and representation that Black women and girls faced in the past and continue to face today. In Black Girl Magic literature, Black women characters perform literal and figurative …
An Examination Of The Association Of Religiosity, Purity Culture, And Religious Trauma With Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety, Kaelyn R. Griffin
An Examination Of The Association Of Religiosity, Purity Culture, And Religious Trauma With Symptoms Of Depression And Anxiety, Kaelyn R. Griffin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
While no consistent definition yet exists for religious trauma, religious abuse is typically defined as a misuse of authority by a spiritual leader to coerce, control, or exploit those under their leadership, which may in turn lead to the experience of religious trauma. Numerous studies suggest that experiencing abuse within a religious environment is a both global phenomenon and common experience. The impact of religious abuse has recently gained greater media attention, specifically related to the social and psychological impact of leaving high-cost religious groups (i.e., those with rigid rules or groups from which departure leads to isolation and rejection …
Investigating Haloacetonitrile (Han) Formation Potential From Nitrogenous Antibiotics And Agrochemicals, Kazi Shafayet Haider
Investigating Haloacetonitrile (Han) Formation Potential From Nitrogenous Antibiotics And Agrochemicals, Kazi Shafayet Haider
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Disinfection can promote safe drinking water. Chlorine and chloramines are the two most used disinfectants. While these disinfectants are effective in inactivating disease-causing pathogens, they also produce hazardous byproducts when they react with organic compounds (precursors). Nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) are more toxic than their counterparts. The increased use of nitrogen-based agrochemicals and antibitics has led to their detection in different water sources. The presence of secondary amine and aniline in these compounds can act as a source of reactive nitrogen to form N-DBPs. In addition, the increased concentration of bromide in water systems due to anthropogenic activities can enhance …
The Closing Of One Black Box, The Opening Of Another: A Self-Study Of How An Instructional Coach Makes Decisions, Andromeda L. Hightower
The Closing Of One Black Box, The Opening Of Another: A Self-Study Of How An Instructional Coach Makes Decisions, Andromeda L. Hightower
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Despite the efforts of traditional and alternative teacher education programs (i.e. pre-service teacher education) in the United States, teachers frequently report feeling unprepared by the time they begin teaching full time in the classroom. Teachers with low levels of self-efficacy are correlated with lower job satisfaction, higher levels of stress and anxiety, and lower student achievement gains in the classroom. To assist with ameliorating these gaps, schools, districts, and private distributors provide training opportunities for teachers once they have begun the job (i.e. in-service teacher training) in the form of teacher professional development. Mainstream professional development approaches are traditionally simplistic …
New-R Intervention For Clients With Severe Mental Illness And Obesity: Grant Writing For Implementation Funds Supporting Occupational Therapy Interventions, Kaitlyn Hoffman
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Increasing numbers of people suffer from obesity and severe mental illness co-morbidly. If these conditions remain untreated, they can harm an individual's health and well-being. Unfortunately, there are very few programs currently available that target both management and improvement of these conditions simultaneously. Even so, despite the lack of programming options, it must be noted that the NEW-R program strives to reach those goals, although there hasn't been an abundance of literature supporting the effectiveness of this program. This poses a concern for occupational therapy practitioners who hope to assist their clients in managing these conditions as occupational therapy treatments …
Response Of The Isothermal Mode Grüneisen Tensor Across Phase Boundaries, Jasmine K. Hinton
Response Of The Isothermal Mode Grüneisen Tensor Across Phase Boundaries, Jasmine K. Hinton
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The assumptions for the 1912 Grüneisen parameter are reviewed, particularly in the cases of anisotropy, high temperatures, and across phase boundaries. Two main case studies are shown: β-Sn, and Cd. The main techniques of this work involve resistively heated diamond anvil cells with both optical Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. It is found in Sn that the isothermal mode Grüneisen tensor along increasing isotherms diverges from the single-valued temperature aggregate at the onset of melt, and this is proposed to use as a method of exploring melt phase boundaries in other systems. This method is examined once again on another …
Metastability And Degradation In Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Thin-Film Solar Cells, Mohsen Jahandardoost
Metastability And Degradation In Cu(In,Ga)Se2 Thin-Film Solar Cells, Mohsen Jahandardoost
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 or CIGS is a thin-film semiconductor that has shown a device efficiency of 23.35% and 24.2% for single-junction and perovskite/CIGS tandem solar cells, respectively. CIGS offers promising properties such as tunable bandgap and ease of processing making them great candidates for thin-film tandem devices. However, knowledge of the effect of material defects, buffer materials, and post-deposition treatment (PDT) on degradation and metastability behavior in these devices is not well understood. In this dissertation, metastability and long-term degradation of CIGS thin-film solar cells have been investigated under combinatorial stress factors of heat, light, and voltage bias to systematically understand the effect …
Individual Differences In Police Officers’ Decision Styles In Order Maintenance Policing, Damarrah Elisheba Jameson
Individual Differences In Police Officers’ Decision Styles In Order Maintenance Policing, Damarrah Elisheba Jameson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Day-to-day police work tends to be in order maintenance policing. These encounters necessitate officer discretion in decision responses to manage them. These decision responses reflect an officer’s decision style which precedes the encounter and drives subsequent decision making to manage them. However, little is known about officer-level decision style. For example, whether an officer has a rational, intuitive, dependent, avoidant, or spontaneous decision style (Scott& Bruce, 1995). Police training in any format often lacks attention to decision styles. As such, an officer’s decision style is most likely associated with demographics (e.g., age, gender) and occupational self-efficacy – a reflection of …
Solving Boundary Value And Initial Boundary Value Problems Of Partial Differential Equations Using Meshless Methods, Adam Johnson
Solving Boundary Value And Initial Boundary Value Problems Of Partial Differential Equations Using Meshless Methods, Adam Johnson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this dissertation, the methods of fundamental solutions (MFS) and the methods of particular solutions (MPS) are used to solve the boundary value problems of the Poisson and Helmholtz equations, where the particular solutions of the Poisson and Helmholtz equations in [13, 14] are used. Then the initial boundary value problems of the diffusion and wave equations are discretized into a sequence of boundary value problems of the Helmholtz equation by using either the Laplace transform or time difference methods along the lines of [8]. The Helmholtz problems are solved consequently in an iterative manner which leads to the solution …

Static compression experiments on water ice are needed for precise characterization and discovery of new ice phases near room temperature. Here I present my efforts and the developments that have been made to reduce detrimental effects found in high-pressure experiments in order to acquire precise measurements on ice approaching 3 Mbar. Several key observations are made, relating to the phase transition of ice-VII to X, an intermediate phase I have named ice-VIIt and evidence of a post ice X phase. Some of these experiments have been replicated using D2O ice as well, in order to gain insight into nuclear quantum …
Time-Dependent Wetting Behavior Of Hydrogels, Amir Kashani
Time-Dependent Wetting Behavior Of Hydrogels, Amir Kashani
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Hydrogels are 3-D polymers with hygroscopic properties that enable them to absorb and retain large amounts of water. In many applications such as biomedical applications, including drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, biosensors, and contact lenses, agriculture, food and beverage, cosmetics, and environmental, hydrogels also need to maintain a high degree of wetting in order to ensure effective functionality and interaction with surrounding fluids or tissues in desired applications. The combination of wetting and absorptive behavior of hydrogels that are often encountered in biomedical, biological, industrial and the mentioned applications presents a challenging physical problem that is not completely understood. …
A Cultural History Of Anti-Feminism In Marvel's Scarlet Witch, Madison M. Kooba
A Cultural History Of Anti-Feminism In Marvel's Scarlet Witch, Madison M. Kooba
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Marvel Comics character Wanda Maximoff, otherwise known as the Scarlet Witch, has received significant attention in popular culture due to her recent appearances as the primary protagonist and antagonist in television show WandaVision (2021) and film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). These depictions foregrounding Wanda’s struggles with mental health have made her an admirable character to many who see her drawing power from her emotions as a celebration of aspects of womanhood that have long been shamed by society. Sourcing these contemporary adaptations, however, lies decades of blatantly anti-feminist and sexist comics that villainize and ridicule Wanda’s …
Creating A Web Resource On Sense Of Belonging For Underrepresented Occupational Therapy Students In Graduate Programs, Owen Uyiosa Lawani
Creating A Web Resource On Sense Of Belonging For Underrepresented Occupational Therapy Students In Graduate Programs, Owen Uyiosa Lawani
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Underrepresented students (URS) in graduate occupational therapy (OT) programs often struggle with a sense of not belonging due to a lack of representation in their cohort and curriculum. This has been evident among students who are from racial/ethnic backgrounds, first-generation college students (FGCS), and have had low-income experiences. Research has shown that a sense of belonging (SB) is important for URS' ability to cope with everyday stressors in higher education. This capstone project focused on developing a web-based resource addressing the perceived SB among URS in graduate OT programs. Data was collected from participants at the University of Nevada Las Vegas …
