Proceedings of GREAT Day
Access to comprehensive and equitable sexual and reproductive health care is an ever-growing subject of discussion, especially in countries such as the U.S. where this right is constantly threatened by factors including, but not limited to, social, political, and economic status. Studies show that comprehensive sex education and services, such as contraception, STD prevention and treatment, pregnancy care, including abortion, encourage healthy adolescent development and have well-documented positive effects on societies world-wide. Unfortunately, too many people in the U.S. encounter unnecessary barriers to the sexual health information and services they need to be healthy and make safe decisions regarding their …

Suggestions For Suny Geneseo Faculty To Improve Students' Experiences In Office Hours, Tyler Grasso
Proceedings of GREAT Day
This study explores undergraduate students' experiences in and attitudes towards faculty office hours at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo. In semi-structured interviews, students were asked to reflect on five key items, including (a) the purpose of office hours, (b) practices that they receive well, (c) practices that they do not receive well, (d) the effects of negative experiences in office hours, and (e) their suggestions to improve office hours. The study recommends that faculty members consult these findings in order to improve students' academic experiences and strengthen student-faculty communication.
The Innovations Of Modern Dance, Shannon Ervay
The Innovations Of Modern Dance, Shannon Ervay
Proceedings of GREAT Day
As Art Nouveau became prominent within American style and physical culture was establishing itself among the United States, the art of dance was evolving with the times. With the shift in art style came a collaboration of ideas in the arts, including the combination of movement and emotion studied by Francois Delsarte and the blend of music and movement in the teachings of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. As a result of the work of these artists and the changing lifestyle of the United States, new innovations were brought into the world of dance. Previously viewed as an art known for the structure …
The Impact Of The African Diaspora On 20th Century Dance, Jaina Dinino
The Impact Of The African Diaspora On 20th Century Dance, Jaina Dinino
Proceedings of GREAT Day
The 20th century has been recognized as an era of integrating African American dancers into modern dance. During this period there was an overarching sentiment of inclusion, cultural expression, and weakening the significance of race defining identity. This universal sentiment among African American dancers and choreographers throughout the 20th century influenced dancers like Arthur Mitchell to establish companies and dedicate their careers to uplifting African American dancers. Overall, the emphasis of inclusion, cultural expression, and the popular notion that race shouldn't define one's identity as a dancer during the 20th century led Mitchell to establish the Dance Theatre of Harlem …

Misogyny, Monstrosity, And Patterns Of Power In Old English Literature, Lauren Silverman
Proceedings of GREAT Day
This paper examines the Old English poems of Beowulf and the lesser-known elegy The Wife's Lament in the light of modern understandings of gender and gender theory. In particular, it will look at the ways women's deviation from gender norms is treated as a deviation from nature itself. In The Wife's Lament, the nameless narrator finds herself exiled from her community, one of the worst fates one could experience in the Anglo-Saxon world, for her departure from gender confinements in order to be reunited with her husband, while in Beowulf, Grendel's Mother is killed for the same set of actions …
Samson's Performance Of Strength And Superiority In Milton's Samson Agonistes, Anders Isaac Schiller
Samson's Performance Of Strength And Superiority In Milton's Samson Agonistes, Anders Isaac Schiller
Proceedings of GREAT Day
In one of John Milton's final works, Samson Agonistes, the broken hero Samson stands apart from his Israelite countrymen in both ability and closeness to God. At birth, Samson is gifted immense strength which is connected to his hair and a prophecy that declares that he will "lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines." In one interpretation of the drama, Milton understands that Samson is of what he considers to be the "lower" Jewish race, but he still writes Samson as a prefiguration of Christianity because he supposedly transcends his Judaism. Contrastingly, I posit that Milton …

Reflections On The Impact Of Covid-19 On Pre-College Engineering Education: An Afterword To The Special Issue, Meltem Alemdar, Roxanne Moore, Hoda Ehsan
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
In our call for proposals, our aim was to explore and document how COVID-19 has impacted pre-college engineering education (Alemdar et al., 2021). During COVID-19, engineering pre-college educators quickly adapted to new learning environments and technologies for teaching and learning. It was important to document these adaptations and lessons learned in formal and informal learning settings. The papers that made up this special show how lessons learned during this challenging time can inform the future of precollege engineering education. The papers offer both theoretical argumentation and empirical evidence to support their answers to the question of how adaptations during COVID-19 …
What's Love Got To Do With It? Redefining Domestic Violence To Close Federal Firearm Loopholes, Cecilia Shields-Auble
What's Love Got To Do With It? Redefining Domestic Violence To Close Federal Firearm Loopholes, Cecilia Shields-Auble
Maine Law Review
Closing the “boyfriend loophole” by expanding the definition of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence to include the abuse of “dating partners” further entrenches the law into an unworkable quasi-marital framework rooted in an antiquated understanding of domestic violence. The federal firearm prohibition would more effectively target high-risk offenders if 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(33)(A) were revised to eliminate the quasi-marital framework and reflect a modern understanding of the power and control dynamics involved in intimate partner violence. This Comment begins by summarizing the emergence of federal domestic violence law and describing the limitations of the Lautenberg Amendment. It then examines …
Your Biometric Data Is Concrete, Your Injury Is Imminent And Particularized: Articulating A Bipa Claim To Survive Article Iii Standing After Transunion V. Ramirez, Kelsey L. Kenny
Maine Law Review
Biometric data is a digital translation of self which endures in its accuracy for one’s entire lifespan. As integral elements of modern life continue to transition their operations exclusively online, the verifiable “digital self” has become indispensable. The immutable and sensitive nature of biometric data makes it peculiarly vulnerable to misappropriation and abuse. Yet the most frightening is the unknown. For an individual who has had their digital extension-of-self covertly stolen or leaked, the dangers that lie in the technology of the future are innumerable. The Illinois legislature recognized the danger associated with the cavalier collection and handling of biometric …

Our Biggest Fans: Nuisance Immunity For Grid-Scale Wind Energy Projects In Maine, Andrew D. Hersom
Maine Law Review
Global climate change and its attendant impacts threaten to change life on Earth as we know it. The sea level rise that comes with rising temperatures is an issue of particular importance to coastal states like Maine. Thankfully, continued investment in renewable energy technology is beginning to make certain renewable energy sources competitive with their nonrenewable counterparts. This Comment highlights wind energy as a particularly effective option for meeting Maine’s energy needs while significantly reducing the harmful greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Despite its many benefits, wind energy technology still has its detractors. Wind energy projects (especially …
Contracts For Cohabitating Romantic Partners, Bailey D. Barnes
Contracts For Cohabitating Romantic Partners, Bailey D. Barnes
Maine Law Review
Marriage rates in the United States are at record lows; meanwhile, more couples are choosing to live together outside of marriage. Despite the changing landscape of romantic relationships, the law of nonmarriage has not kept pace. Rather than having a coherent, majority rule approach, the individual states have employed differing methods of providing for property distribution at the end of a long-term unmarried cohabitation. Unfortunately, absent the formal protections offered by marriage for both parties following a divorce, many cohabitants are at risk of suffering inequitable property distribution following the termination of a cohabitation. This Article proposes that states uniformly …

Dabus, An Artificial Intelligence Machine, Invented Something New And Useful, But The Uspto Is Not Buying It, Trevor F. Ward
Maine Law Review
U.S. patent laws are designed to promote science and the useful arts. They grant temporary monopoly rights to inventors in order to incentivize inventive activity. In the United States, patent rights revolve around the inventor. However, what happens when an Artificial Intelligence (AI) machine invents? Who deserves monopoly rights to the invention? Who will be incentivized by such monopolies? Do U.S. laws protect companies’ investments in AI? In 2019, for the first time in history, an AI machine called DABUS was listed as an inventor on two U.S. patent applications. The United States Patent and Trademark Office denied the applications, …
Governance Of Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal Research Under The United Nations Conventions On The Law Of The Sea, Wil Burns
Maine Law Review
There has been a spate of research in recent years indicating that achievement of the temperature objectives of the Paris Agreement can only be effectuated through both aggressive decarbonization of the global economy and large-scale deployment of so-called carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches. While much of the early focus of CDR research was on terrestrial options, such as afforestation, direct air capture, and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, more recently, many in the scientific and policy community have increasingly focused on potential ocean-based approaches, including ocean fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, macroalgae harvesting, and ocean upwelling and downwelling. However, while …

Primacy In Theory And Application: Lessons From A Half-Century Of New Judicial Federalism, Catherine R. Connors, Connor Finch
Primacy In Theory And Application: Lessons From A Half-Century Of New Judicial Federalism, Catherine R. Connors, Connor Finch
Maine Law Review
In his 1977 article, State Constitutions and the Protection of Individual Rights, Justice Brennan famously reminded jurists that our governmental system includes two constitutions applicable to each state, and New Judicial Federalism was born. Since then, state courts have applied their own Bills of Rights using different approaches with varying degrees of enthusiasm. The primacy approach, requiring state courts to consider the state constitution first, and turning to the federal constitution only if needed to resolve the case, is theoretically optimal but inconsistently followed, even in the few jurisdictions professing to adopt that approach. This Article posits that the reason …

Can The Universal Validity Of Judgment Of Taste Be Achieved In Language Analysis?, Wei Li
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
ImmanuelKant argues that thejudgment of taste should have universal validity. Whilethis proposition is closely related to language, littlehas been donefrom the perspective of language analysis. Thejudgment of taste demands everyone’s agreement, whichinvolves apriority and necessity. In both aspectsof this proposition, however, there is tension, as is indicated through language analysis. Therefore,in the judgment of taste we cannot demand consensusinbothaspects. Compared with the method of language analysis, the method of transcendental aestheticsneeds further reflection.
Philosophy Of Art, Or Aesthetics Of Symbolism? On Paul De Man’S Deconstructive Interpretation Of Hegel’S Aesthetics, Shanchuan Zhang
Philosophy Of Art, Or Aesthetics Of Symbolism? On Paul De Man’S Deconstructive Interpretation Of Hegel’S Aesthetics, Shanchuan Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Following Derrida’s deconstructiveapproach, de Man approaches Hegel’s Aestheticsfrom the perspective of distinction between sign and symbol in the Philosophy of Spiritand opensupthe linguistic dimension of the Aesthetics. De Man believes that this dimension deconstructsHegel’s classic construction of forms of art, and makes the Aestheticsreturnto a traditional art theory of symbolism, i.e. “art is essentially symbolic (for both the symbolic form of art and classical and romantic forms of art)”.. Facing the challenges from defenders of the Aesthetics, de Man defendshis claim of symbolism from two perspectives: the deconstruction of the system of idealism and the deconstruction of the rhetoric of …

How To Do The Grotesque With Laughter? -- A Foucauldian Self-Doubling Poetics, Chengjun Nie
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Three approaches to the relation between “laughter” and the “grotesque” may be recognized in aesthetic research, namely, Kayser’s, Bakhtin’s and the hybridity of both. A forth approach may be described from Foucault’s elaboration on laughter in his preface to The Order of Things, which may be termed as an approach of conducting aesthetic discursive practices of the grotesque by way of laughter. Foucault did not directly deal with the relation between the grotesque and laughter, but instead let out four laughs in his text. He particularly translated in his language labyrinth the first laughter into 19 doubles, which, through redoubling …

Intelligent Writing Experiment And The Avant-Garde Tradition, Hongliang Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Thecomputer writing experiment can be traced back to the European avant-garde movement in the early 20thcentury. It has been developed in the tradition ofthe avant-garde, and constantly incorporatednew technologies. With the rapid advancement in digital technology since 1990s, intelligentwriting experiment hasalso shown some new features. On the one hand, originality has been diminishing due to open source code, and there are more and more collective writing projects making use of shared sources. On the other hand, interactivity is highlighted and in many new works, the traditional relationship between readers and writers issubverted. Through inheriting and reforming the avant-garde tradition, intelligent writing experiment enters …

The Innovation Mechanism Of Context: An Investigation Centering On I. A. Richards And Jonathan Culler, Yuyun Feng, Liming Zhou
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the twentieth century, the issue of context has been the chiefconcernof social practice and academic discussions, demonstrating a considerable innovation mechanism in the polysemy, reproducibilityand problem effect of context. In the1930s, I. A. Richardsfirst broke the simple nomenclature of traditional rhetoric and put forward the context theorem and its complex meanings. On theone hand, itsontological peculiarity of polysemy dispels the singularity, certainty and solidification of traditional context. On theother hand, it breaks the mentality of binary opposition and organically unites the internal and the external, the vertical and the horizontal, and surface and in-depth studies of literature with a macro …

Bruno Latour is a leading figure in the field of scienceand technology studies (STS) and anadvocate of actor-network theory (ANT). From his ethnographic studies of science in the late 20th century to his resetting of sociology and ecology in the 21st century, Latour has used all available resources and tools to conduct thought experiments, whereinliterature is one of the resources he constantly draws on and favors the most. By using literary works as supporting examples, employing literary forms as means of argumentation, and treating literary theories as conceptual framework, Latour has been practicing the idea of transcending the opposition between …
A Study On The Healing Of Diseases And The View And Imagination Of Landscape In Early Chinese Poetry: A Case Study Focusing On “Seven Stimuli”, Jin Yue
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The viewand imagination of landscapein early verses and rhapsody poetry are connected with the healingof physical diseases and the satisfaction of instinctive desires. Comparing Mei Cheng's "Seven Stimuli" with Song Yu's "Gao Tang Rhapsody" and the bamboo book "Countering Sexual Indulgence" of the early Han Dynasty, one finds, in the narration and prosody that aim at curing diseases, the vast and amazing beauty of landscapes. Such beauty enters the viewing and imagination, invoking subtle feelings of the body, connecting with the stirrings of life force, blood and spirit, and is engraved in the memory of the body. This whole process …
“Literary Impersonation” And The Rhetoric Of Hidden Judgements: A Textual Research Of Yang Weizhen’S Supplementary And Simulative Writing In Revisitinghistorical Events, Xinglei Bu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Yang Weizhen’s book RevisitingHistorical Events, completed in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, was included in the History Sectionof the Four Treasuries. However, the articles such as“Supplement,”“Simulation”and “Supposition”in this book are sharply different from the conventional historical essays. These articles not only demonstrate the author’s particular historical thinking but alsocontainuniqueliteraryvalue. The creative technique of such supplementary articles is to reexamine historical events andexplicatehidden judgementsthrough an immersion in the specific historical scenes and impersonatingthe ancients. In terms of the mode of historical narrative, such technique not only inherits the tradition of neo-Confucianism thatvalorizesdoctrines, but also shows the authorial propensity for“literary …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The relationship between early Chinese cinematicconcepts and German films is under-researched. During the middle and late 1920s, an important period in the early development history of Chinese film, American films almost monopolized Chinese film industry, however, German films still madeits way into Chinese minds with their profound intellectuality and artistry. Chinese audience perceived the realistic and expressionist aesthetic styles, the true description of social life and people’s inner feelings, the strong national character and humanistic connotations, and the profound literariness and the novel and exquisite cinematography of German films, and imbibed them into the construction of a modern Chinese national …

The Distinction Between Wen(Verse) And Bi (Prose): Zou Yang’S Contribution To The Establishing Of Verse, Chunhong Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
From a diachronic perspective, Zou Yang, a figure of the early Han dynasty, underwent a transformation from a lobbyist to a literatus. Influenced by Mei Sheng, Zou Yang incorporated himself into the tradition of TheBookof Songsand The Songs of Chu, emphasizing the aesthetic function of verse. His “A Letter to the King of Liang in Prison” contained the key elements of verse in the distinction between verse and prose, such as the use of rhetorical devices. In addition, as verse required the harmony of syllables, Zou Yang promoted the stylistic distinction between verse and prose, and heralded the self-consciousness of …

The nature of film is the restoration of material reality. The recording and revelation of life movement are powerful confirmation of its artistic uniqueness. In light ofthis fact, it is easy to grasp that the essential function of film asa medium is the sculpting of time. Therefore, the way a film asa perceptive object present time and in what form time is presented are worthy of in-depth consideration. This paper focuses on the expressive technique of audio-visual language at the micro level, tries to analyze the generative trajectory of film’s deep temporal structure through the captured “surface of things”, with …

Investigating The Narrative Distance Of Film From Form To Value, Xuan Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The narrative distance of filmrefers to the quantitative difference of narrative information between the grand videographer, the narrator, the audience and the characters, based on the differencesin cognitive range, moral cultivation and aesthetic ability. It can be divided into three categories: the cognitive, the emotional and moral, and the aesthetic, presenting a variety of distance patterns such as identity, intervention, identification, and sympathy. Filmdisplays and adjusts narrative distance in various ways, in order to achieve narrative functions such as suspense, surprise, and even joke and irony. Looking at narrative distance at the level of narrative ethics, we need to focus …

Beyond Positivism: The Emergence And Approaches Of Theatre Historiography In North America, Guanda Wu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Beginning in the 1980s, under the influence of critical theories, theatre historians in North America began to critically reflect upon the historical legacy of Theaterwissenschaft (Theatre Studies). Scholars adoptedthe concept of “theatre historiography” to theorize research on theatre history. This intellectual move sought to explore methodologies that differ from a positivist approach to theatre history.Theatre historiography is concerned with the most essential assumptions, principles, and methodologies that determine how theatre history is produced. The emergence of theatre historiographyhas facilitated a renewed understanding of the essentialnature of theatre, materials for research in theatre history, and research subjects.
