The Friends Of C.S. Lewis, Walter Hooper Apr 2023

The Friends Of C.S. Lewis, Walter Hooper

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

A series of talks was given at Grandpont House, Oxford in 2013 to mark the half-century anniversary of C. S. Lewis’s death and the fortieth anniversary of J. R. R. Tolkien’s passing. The address by Walter Hooper focused on memories of C. S. Lewis and his friends and took that story up to Lewis’s death on 22 November 1963.1 The essay below, given on a different occasion,2 is a complementary address covering the period from 1963 to the death of Owen Barfield in 1997. Hooper himself passed away in 2020.

A Message In A Bottle: C.S. Lewis's American Epistolary Friendships, Bruce L. Edwards

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

The first French conference focused on C. S. Lewis was held at Lille Catholic University in June 2011. Bruce L. Edwards delivered a plenary talk there exploring the theme of friendship as demonstrated in the correspondence between Lewis and his American readers. Edwards had intended to revise this address for inclusion in the memorial volume dedicated to his friend Chris Mitchell. Edwards died in 2015 while still making revisions to the draft below.

Cousin To Cousin: Joy Davidman's Correspondence With Edward Rosenthal, Don W. King

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

The focus of the smaller collection below—comprised of six letters and postcards written between 1950 and 1960—is Joy’s correspondence with her first cousin, Edward (aka Eddie or Eddy) Rosenthal. Rosenthal was the son of Henry and Rebecca Rosenthal; Rebecca was the sister of Joy’s mother, Jennette Davidman, and thus Joy’s aunt. Rosenthal worked at the Los Angeles Examiner (est. 1903-62), a newspaper founded by William Randolph Hearst. The subjects of their correspondence include discussion of family members, notably Joy’s husband Bill Gresham as well as her sons David and Douglas, and a number of other extended kindred. Other topics are …

An Unlikely Preacher: C.S. Lewis And The War-Time Sermon, Joe Ricke Apr 2023

An Unlikely Preacher: C.S. Lewis And The War-Time Sermon, Joe Ricke

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

The sermon was supposedly titled “‘None Other Gods’: Culture in War Time,” although no extant copy has that full title. His text was an obscure verse from the Book of Deuteronomy. It was the first sermon he had ever preached. Before the end of the war, the preacher, Clive Staples Lewis, a native of Belfast, a veteran of the Great War, and a rather recently converted agnostic, had become a household word in Great Britain and beyond as a defender of the Christian faith.

Seven Letters Of Warren Lewis To June Flewett, Don W. King Apr 2023

Seven Letters Of Warren Lewis To June Flewett, Don W. King

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

Excerpt: June loved both Jack and Warnie, and she remembered Warnie with particular affection: “He was amusing and enjoyed playing the crusty old bachelor. He and Jack listened to classical music on an old gramophone with a huge wooden horn. I was sometimes invited to join them for this in Jack’s study. I do not remember ever seeing him in a bad mood. . . . In the two years that I shared his home he was consistently kind and courteous to me and I was very fond of him.” The seven letters that follow underscore Warnie’s deep affection for …

Previously published Lewis pieces in the Lanier collection include eleven letters or excerpts from letters, a manuscript draft of “Learning in Wartime” from the collection The Weight of Glory, an early version of the poem “A Cliché Came Out of its Cage,” and a penciled outline of notes for Beyond Personality, later included in Mere Christianity. Fourteen Lewis manuscripts in the Lanier Collection are published here for the first time.

Food Web Structure And Dynamics Across Space And Time, Angélica González Apr 2023

Food Web Structure And Dynamics Across Space And Time, Angélica González

Sustainability Seminar Series

Human activities are fundamentally altering major biogeochemical cycles, which are at the core of the structure and functioning of Earth’s systems. Increasing inputs of chemical elements such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and their imbalanced inputs (N:P ratios) are having severe consequences on ecological phenomena from organism physiology to ecosystem functioning. In this talk, I will discuss the utility of ecological stoichiometry thinking combined with the use of surveys, experiments, and data synthesis approaches, to understand the consequences of shifts in nutrient supply dynamics on ecological processes at multiple scales.

View From The Editor's Chair, Stephen Daniells

Oxford ICSB

With the pandemic fading in the minds of most Americans and a return to something we can all recognize as ‘normality’, there is a slight reset happening in US dietary supplements industry. Consumers who flocked to the industry in record numbers are still there, but spending habits have changed and hot categories like immune support are evolving. We're also seeing technology being leveraged in the search for the next hot ingredient, from artificial intelligence to synthetic biology, and this has implications for the botanicals trade. We also have an industry at odds with itself, with trade associations working against each …

Extract Of Artemisia Dracunculus L. Modulates The Proliferation And Activity Of Osteoblasts, Matthew C. Scott Apr 2023

Extract Of Artemisia Dracunculus L. Modulates The Proliferation And Activity Of Osteoblasts, Matthew C. Scott

Oxford ICSB

Thiazolidinedione (TZD) treatment significantly improves insulin sensitivity and lowers blood glucose via action on adipocytes. Unfortunately, the pro-adipogenic property of TZDs is also associated with bone degradation by inhibiting the action of bone forming cells, or osteoblasts. An ethanol extract of Artemisia dracunculus L., termed PMI 5011, improves blood glucose and insulin sensitivity via action on muscle cells, rather than fat, and may therefore spare bone while lowering blood glucose levels. Here we examine in vitro the effects of PMI 5011 on a pre-osteoblast cell line, MC3T3-E1 cells, during osteogenic differentiation. We hypothesized that PMI 5011 will not inhibit osteogenesis, …

An Interview With The Tempestry Project, Sparrow Potter Apr 2023

An Interview With The Tempestry Project, Sparrow Potter

Proceedings of GREAT Day

The Tempestry project centers around creating a visual representation of climate change. Crocheters, knitters, and all other crafters come together to create a quilt with a color-coded version of temperature over the years. Each Wednesday, you can find this dedicated group of crafters showing up with spools of yarn. It's a very small-knit (no pun intended) atmosphere. Those who are veterans teach the newer ones, and each kit comes with instructions. Conversation is very companionable. Some people are working on the project, others seem to be working on their own side projects. A portion of the sales from each kit …

Dr. Jay W. Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium [2023-2024]

I will examine Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865), The Princess Bride by William Goldman (1973), and my own unpublished novel, The Sun Kingdom, will be used to compare different techniques and styles of world building. These works will be explored through the aspect of world building, focusing on the importance of geography, language, and traditions and culture that were created for their respective worlds, how these elements were created, and what effect this has on the story.

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Phenyl Substituted Zinc Dipyrrin Photosensitizer, Kole Owen Apr 2023

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Phenyl Substituted Zinc Dipyrrin Photosensitizer, Kole Owen

Dr. Jay W. Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium [2023-2024]

The utilization of solar energy remains secondary to the combustion of fossil fuels for global energy consumption. To better utilize this abundant energy resource, experimental effort is being directed towards the understanding of photosensitizers, molecules that absorb solar radiation and use that energy to initiate redox chemistry in artificial photosynthesis mechanisms. A zinc dipyrrin, one such class of photosensitizer, is attempted to be synthesized with phenyl substitutions in order to probe aromatic substituent effects on the molecule’s photophysics.

The Effect Of The Pyramid Shape On Compost Smell, Elizabeth Klosko Apr 2023

The Effect Of The Pyramid Shape On Compost Smell, Elizabeth Klosko

Proceedings of GREAT Day

SUNY Geneseo's campus has a compost collecting program where students, faculty, and staff can dispose of their compostable items in bins which are emptied weekly. How-ever, the bins release a putrid scent when opened, deterring SUNY Geneseo community members from using them. A phenomenon commonly known as Pyramid Power claims that the pyramid shape, when exactly scaled to the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza, has properties that, once compostable items are put under it, can limit the growth of micro-organisms and therefore reduce the foul smell. Using a 3-D printing device, we will scale and print the pyramid …

The Effects Of Deforestation On Yellow Fever Virus Transmission, Meghan Sheridan Apr 2023

The Effects Of Deforestation On Yellow Fever Virus Transmission, Meghan Sheridan

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Deforestation is increasingly associated with the transmission of zoonotic viruses, such as the Yellow Fever virus in South America and Africa. Increasing rates of deforestation within countries on these land masses may cause viral transmission to accelerate, but that may depend on the various factors responsible for deforestation. The purpose of this study is to determine what climate factors are increasing the rate of viral transmission. For example, the deforestation caused in areas of increased precipitation may have different effects on animal hosts and vectors (e.g. mosquito) of the Yellow Fever virus compared to deforestation caused in areas of lower …

How Patient-Provider Interactions Influence Patient Experiences, Emily Lumbis Apr 2023

How Patient-Provider Interactions Influence Patient Experiences, Emily Lumbis

Proceedings of GREAT Day

The interaction between a patient and a provider is crucial to the success of any medical or healthcare appointment. It often goes overlooked, and there is more of a focus on the provider correctly diagnosing and treating the patient. Although patients will remember the success of being properly diagnosed and treated for an illness, what truly stands out is the way the interaction went. This ethnographic research project focuses on provider-patient interactions from the patient's perspective, and how those interactions shaped their experiences. The goal of this study was to better understand the interactions between patients and providers and the …

One Step Forward, Three Steps Back, Laura Montes Apr 2023

One Step Forward, Three Steps Back, Laura Montes

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Access to comprehensive and equitable sexual and reproductive health care is an ever-growing subject of discussion, especially in countries such as the U.S. where this right is constantly threatened by factors including, but not limited to, social, political, and economic status. Studies show that comprehensive sex education and services, such as contraception, STD prevention and treatment, pregnancy care, including abortion, encourage healthy adolescent development and have well-documented positive effects on societies world-wide. Unfortunately, too many people in the U.S. encounter unnecessary barriers to the sexual health information and services they need to be healthy and make safe decisions regarding their …
