Advancing Targeted Food Allergen Detection: Extraction Optimization And Sample Preparation Method Comparison Using Lc-Ms/Ms, Zhenhao Wang

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Accurate quantification of food allergens in processed foods by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) requires effective protein extraction and sample cleanup. However, no single sample preparation workflow has shown consistent performance across diverse food matrices. This study evaluated extraction buffer formulations and post-extraction cleanup strategies for quantification of milk, soy, and peanut allergens in multiple processed food matrices.

Six extraction buffers with varying combinations of SDS, urea, and thiourea alongside a common Tris-HCl/DTT/PVPP base were evaluated across five food matrices. No significant differences in extraction efficiency were observed among buffer formulations for nonfat dry milk (NFDM), non-roasted soy flour, peanut …

Effects Of Applying Humic Acid In-Furrow At Potato Planting, Jonathan Tyler Price May 2026

Effects Of Applying Humic Acid In-Furrow At Potato Planting, Jonathan Tyler Price

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Many products are marketed towards potato farmers that purport to have a positive return on investment for yield and quality. Humic acids, which are comprised of long chained, organic molecules that can be naturally or industrially made, are currently being marketed in this way. The use of these materials is reported to improve nutrient uptake, increase soil health, encourage vigorous growth, and most importantly, increase yields.  From 2023-2025, the in-furrow application of humic acid containing commercial products was evaluated in Pennsylvania on the cultivars ‘Lehigh’ and ‘Waneta’. Black Label Zn, Duo Maxx, Fertiactyl RhiZn, Humi-flex FA, Hydra-Hume, and Monty's Liquid …

Evaluating The Impact Of Intercropping Vegetables And Cut Flowers On Yield And Conservation Biological Control, Alliance Igiraneza

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Specialty crops such as vegetables are some of the most susceptible to yield losses and increased management difficulty over time due to pests. One of the potential solutions to this problem, which aims at ensuring the sustainability of the sector, is using conservation biological control practices such as intercropping to increase diversity, while maintaining the economic feasibility and profitability of the system. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of this management practice using Bell pepper (Capsicum annuum var. King Arthur) as the main crop, intercropped with flowers including zinnia (Zinnia elegans var. Benary’s Giant), sunflower ( …

Cis-Variant Gene-Expression Association Analysis: A Targeted Approach To Identify Functional Cis-Regulatory Variation, Sofiya Arora May 2026

Cis-Variant Gene-Expression Association Analysis: A Targeted Approach To Identify Functional Cis-Regulatory Variation, Sofiya Arora

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phenotypic diversity in plants is largely driven by changes in gene function arising from mutations in both the coding and regulatory regions. Regulatory variation is particularly pervasive because it can fine-tune gene expression without disrupting protein function and is therefore less likely to be strongly selected against in natural populations. As a result, it has played a central role in evolution and domestication. In our previous genome-wide eQTL mapping study in maize, nearly two-thirds of the expressed genes were found to harbor detectable cis-expression quantitative trait loci (cis-eQTLs) with strong local effects on gene expression. Though these cis-variants are widespread, …

Callie Bowland - Various Works, Callie E. Bowland May 2026

Callie Bowland - Various Works, Callie E. Bowland

Professional Practices (ART 399)

My ceramic works explore stress, masking, and how they affect the body over time, in addition to what can be considered the true self, and how society reacts to it. They all feature an element of abstract, twisting flesh.

Reliquary uses it as a very literal interpretation of inner beauty, turning flesh and bone into an ornate vessel, playing with the parallel of the human body as a vessel for the mind. It also poses the question of what makes up a person, by contrasting the corporeal flesh and bone with a mask- like face–are we the physical body itself, …

The Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet: Its History And Legacy In American Saxophone Quartet Performance, James M. Lawhn May 2026

The Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet: Its History And Legacy In American Saxophone Quartet Performance, James M. Lawhn

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

The saxophone quartet has emerged as a legitimate chamber ensemble in the United States through the sustained efforts of a small number of pioneering professional groups. Despite the central role these ensembles have played in shaping repertoire, performance standards, and public perception, their histories have often gone undocumented. Among the most influential of these groups is the Harvey Pittel Saxophone Quartet, an ensemble that maintained an unusually active national and international touring career for nearly four decades and helped establish the saxophone quartet as a viable professional model.

This document addresses a significant gap in the scholarly literature by presenting …

A Webcam Eye Tracking Infrastructure For Software Engineering Tasks, Zachary M. Kozak May 2026

A Webcam Eye Tracking Infrastructure For Software Engineering Tasks, Zachary M. Kozak

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Performing eye tracking utilizing commodity webcams has been explored for over a decade, but limited camera quality and sensitivity to head movements have hindered its adoption in research settings. Recent advances in consumer-grade webcams and machine learning methods present an opportunity to improve the accuracy of webcam eye tracking and extend the feasibility of studies beyond controlled laboratory environments.

Current popular webcam eye tracking methods restrict implementations to the browser and rely on continuous user interactions for calibration, limiting the kinds of studies that can be conducted. This thesis presents a feature-based gaze prediction system that incorporates eye geometry and …

Machine Vision For In Situ Measurement And Control Of Wire Stickout In Lwded Process, Braden Mclain, Remy Mathenia, Todd Sparks, Frank Liou May 2026

Machine Vision For In Situ Measurement And Control Of Wire Stickout In Lwded Process, Braden Mclain, Remy Mathenia, Todd Sparks, Frank Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents a machine-vision–based measurement and control framework for laser wire directed energy deposition (LWDED) processes. A visible-light camera system is used to capture meltpool images, from which a novel vision algorithm extracts the wire–meltpool interface location. By utilizing a camera that is rigidly mounted to the deposition head, the vision algorithm provides a relative measurement of the distance between the nozzle tip and the workpiece, also referred to as wire stickout. A proportional-derivative (PD) control strategy is implemented using the measured stickout as feedback to adjust deposition feedrate. Results show that the control system successfully compensates for improper …

The Portrayal Of Caseworker Turnover In New York State Foster Care Assessment Documents, Shelby S. Cover-Lapomarede

Student Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines how caseworker turnover is portrayed in New York State foster care assessment documents published between 2014 and 2024. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis (QCA) approach informed by Margrit Schreier’s methodology, this study evaluates publicly available government reports, assessment documents, policy documents, and audit reports to identify how turnover is represented, what causes are highlighted, and what consequences are downplayed. The data reveals that turnover is often framed as an administrative issue rather than a workplace welfare crisis with extensive emotional and relational impacts on caseworkers, children, and families. Burnout, heavy caseloads, inadequate mental health care, low pay, …

Study Of Dynamics Of Airflow And Aerosol Transport And Deposition In Human Upper Airways Using Large-Eddy Simulations, Jacob C. Pratt May 2026

Study Of Dynamics Of Airflow And Aerosol Transport And Deposition In Human Upper Airways Using Large-Eddy Simulations, Jacob C. Pratt

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study employs a large-eddy simulation (LES) strategy to investigate airflow and aerosol dynamics in the human upper airways using a truncated SimInhale configuration. Inflow conditions include three steady inhalation flow rates (14.2, 53.2, and 71 L/min), representing quasi-laminar, moderate, and high turbulence conditions, and a realistic cyclic breathing scenario. Under steady flow, monodisperse (1–10 μm) and polydisperse aerosols are analyzed. The study shows that complex airflow dynamics directly influence aerosol transport and deposition, causing global deposition to increase nonlinearly with particle size and Reynolds number, with the larynx being a primary deposition location in turbulent cases. For the polydisperse …

Engagement with asynchronous instruction was measured using data from the program’s learning management system (LMS), while attendance logs …

Calibration Refinement Of Aashto Paveme For Kentucky Asphalt Overlays, Clayton S. Cook, Kean H. Ashurst Jr., Clark Graves May 2026

Calibration Refinement Of Aashto Paveme For Kentucky Asphalt Overlays, Clayton S. Cook, Kean H. Ashurst Jr., Clark Graves

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) uses AASHTOWare’s Pavement ME Design Version 3.0 (PaveME) to develop mechanistic-empirical designs for new and reconstructed pavements. Transfer functions used for estimating pavement distress in PaveME rely on national calibration values derived from the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) database. However, these often fail to reflect Kentucky’s local conditions, materials, and practices. To address this issue, Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) researchers completed local calibrations for several key transfer functions (rutting, reflective fatigue cracking, and roughness (IRI)) to improve the predictive accuracy of and reduce bias in pavement performance models developed for rehabilitation projects that involve placing …
