Malate dehydrogenase is a multimeric enzyme among living organisms that catalyzes the reverse transformation of malate and oxaloacetate using the reduction of NAD+ to NADH. This reaction plays a role in metabolic pathways including the citric acid cycle, gluconeogenesis, and anaerobic metabolism. MDH shares a similar 3-dimensional structure and mechanism with lactate dehydrogenase. Knowing the structure is important when it comes to the redesign of enzyme mutations, which can be a useful method for studying the catalysis of small substrates. Physiological effects of the amino acid sequence alterations are easier to predict when the structure is known. The active site …

Scholars such as Carol Anderson (2017) and Joe Feagin (1994; 2006) have written extensively about the prevalence of white rage and systemic racism in contemporary society. We are seeing this played out in real time with Florida Governor De Santis trying to enact legislation to remove discussions of African American history and block dialogues about racism in schools. Robin DiAngelo (2019) explains “white fragility” as blaming “others with less social power for their discomfort” (109). The detection and mapping of winter wheat and the canopy cover of associated weeds, such as chickweed and hairy buttercup, are essential for crop and weed management. With emerging drone technologies, the use of a multispectral camera with the red-edge band, such as Altum, is commonly used for crop and weed mapping. However, little is understood about the contribution of the red-edge band in mapping. This project is an exploration of the construction and contestation of whiteness in Argentina through the lens of women’s captivity in the middle period. This research explores how representations of captive women were used to construct a national identity via gender, race, and ethnicity, exploring some of the foundational work that would lead to the myth of Argentina as a white nation. By focusing on the various roles these captive women played and centering the complex liminal spaces they negotiated this work seeks to challenge elite historical representations of captive women by highlighting their nuanced socio-political role amongst Indigenous, specifically …

The Office for Education Policy at the University of Arkansas administered a survey to Arkansas parents about their perceptions of their students’ PreKindergarten experiences. The survey, administered in March of 2023, was sent to parents of Kindergarten students currently attending an Arkansas public school, as well as parents of students currently enrolled in Pre-Kindergarten programs housed in Arkansas public schools or enrolled in a Head Start program. Bioactive glass beads have been used to distribute medicine over extended periods of time in limited uses. They can be engineered to have a porous and hollow structure, and using Mo-Sci's OL-GL 1756b (1756b), the fundamental notion of dosage distribution can be tested in preparation to design the optimal glass for medicine distribution. A few key factors in this is how long does it take the liquid to release from the beads, how do the beads decay, and how well the glass can bond to human tissue. In psychoacoustics, noise can be categorized as different ‘colors’, which refers to the varying power and spread of noise signals over the spectrum of sound frequencies. White noise contains all frequencies at equal volumes, and pink noise, in which the power spectral density of the sound is inverse to the frequency. Both have been studied for their effects on sleep and relaxation. However, little research exists on the topic of colored noise usage for stress reduction and the effects it may have on the acute stress response.

Previous research has shown that postpartum women with untreated mental health conditions are more likely to fail to manage their own health, have inadequate nutrition, abuse substances, experience abuse, be less responsive to their baby’s needs, have fewer positive interactions with their baby, experience difficulties breastfeeding, and question their abilities as a mother. Rural culture plays a complex role in the transition to motherhood, influencing whether mothers seek out and use resources. While more is known about location and access issues, less is known about how rural culture and, more specifically, how empowerment and social support impact postpartum experience. The …

Human trafficking consists of both sex trafficking (ST) and labor trafficking (LT) and is a growing problem for the United States. The Federal Human Trafficking Report (2019), states that Missouri is ranked ninth in the country for active criminal human trafficking cases. This issue is particularly prevalent in our churches because churches serve vulnerable populations and predators may be drawn to churches. Religious academic literature about pastor advocacy for victims of ST is lacking, while popular news sources reference case after case where pastors are the predators. Effectiveness Of Follow Up Phone Calls On Postpartum Women After Discharge: A Program Evaluation, Camille Williams

After an expectant mother gives birth, they are closely monitored for 48 to 72 hours after delivery and then discharged from the hospital. They are then typically seen by their physician for a postpartum follow up appointment within six to eight weeks for their postpartum follow up visit. Although complications during this postpartum period can still arise, postpartum women are rarely assessed during this time. Follow-up phone calls have been known to improve patient outcomes and communication between patients and providers once patients are discharged from the hospital. Development policies targeting young people and African agriculture tend to focus on their abandonment of the sector and the need to attract new generations to agricultural activities through its commercialization. This paper points to potential gaps in such interventions by investigating the diverse mobilities, aspirations, and engagements of young people in farming, through a qualitative case study in rural northern Ghana. Our study also challenges the prevalent assumption of African farmers’ movements from rural to rural areas, from rural to urban areas, and out of farming altogether, as we found evidence of young people migrating from urban to rural areas. …

While the canon is replete with biographies of individual spiritual exemplars—Paramahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi, Thomas Merton’s The Seven Storey Mountain, and the Dalai Lama’s Freedom in Exile come to mind—few have examined exemplars across faiths. This collection focuses on Hindu masters from many different perspectives and practices, as well as a variety of Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh masters. During an mRNA’s lifecycle, RNA-binding proteins (RBP) are added and removed in order to facilitate export from the nucleus to the cytoplasm through the nuclear pore complex (NPC). During the RNA export process, a class of proteins termed Dead-box proteins (Dbps) are strategically located at the cytoplasmic face of the NPC to remove mRNPs from the mRNA-protein complex, providing one way directionality for export in the process termed mRNA-protein (mRNP) remodeling. Our research explores the intersection between Christianity and conservatism, focusing on how these two belief systems can influence perceptions about transgender people. Sociological research often addresses Christian (particularly fundamentalist and evangelical) influence on homophobia and lesbian, gay, and bisexual discrimination: how religion can negatively influence perceptions of same-sex couples, same-sex marriage, LGB (not including transgender) communities, people, and political efforts (Whitehead, 2013; Melliniger, 2014); however, we will focus on the under-studied relationship between conservative Christian beliefs and perceptions of transgender people or identities.
