Evidence Of Continuing Downward Trends In American Kestrel Populations And Recommendations For Research Into Causal Factors, David M. Bird, John A. Smallwood

We analyzed long-term datasets from nest box programs, Breeding Bird Surveys run by the US Geological Survey, Christmas Bird Counts run by the National Audubon Society, and counts from two key fall migration watch sites, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and Cape May Hawkwatch. We found that populations of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) in North America are generally still declining, albeit with some caveats. Some populations are actually increasing, while others are remaining stable. Overall, the magnitude of annual change appears to be decreasing slightly during recent years. To understand potential causes of the decline, we recommend the following courses of action …

Bear Essentials is an online newsletter published by the Student Activities Council of Des Moines Area Community College. The newsletter was established in early 2020 when DMACC closed its facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic. The newsletter covers topics such as upcoming virtual activities and events, college resources, and community service opportunities. When asked about the origins of the newsletter, Student Activities Advisor Erin Smith said, "We wanted students to know they were not alone, the entire DMACC Community was coming together to help support one another in any way possible."

In 1968, Matyas and Radhakrishna introduced the concept of the state surface, demonstrating that unsaturated soil volume change is dependent on two independent stress state variables, net total stress and suction. For decades the basic theory of unsaturated soils has been known, and a holistic view of the elastoplastic response of unsaturated soils, based on a modified state surface approach (MSSA), makes it clear that a method accounting for independent roles of net total stress and suction is required to quantify volume change of unsaturated soils. The Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) developed by Alonso et al. [1] is the first and the mostwidely used elasto-plastic model for unsaturated soils. The BBM successfully explained many key features of unsaturated soils and received extensive acceptance. However, there is lack of a well-establishedmethod for selecting parameter values for the BBM from laboratory tests, although a variety of methods have been recently developed for calibrating model parameters for the BBM. This Communication describes the Pd-catalyzed C(sp³)-H functionalization of a tropane derivative to generate products with functionalization at two (β/γ) or three (β/γ/β) different sites on the alicyclic amine core. These reactions proceed via an initial dehydrogenation to generate an alkene product that can react further to form a Pd(I) alkene-bridged dimer. Functionalization of this dimer affords β/γ/β-functionalized allylic arylation and allylic acetoxylation products.

The Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) is a natural law principle attributed to Thomas Aquinas that is supposed to offer insight on whether an act is morally permissible or not. It also seeks to make a moral distinction between intending harm and merely foreseeing harm. In this paper, I argue that we should reject DDE because it does not allow a person to intend harm even in situations where it seems to be morally justifiable. It also fails at making a distinction between intending harm and merely foreseeing harm. Because of this, the conditions of DDE seem to be implausible.

Apoptosis, commonly known as programmed cell death, constantly occurs in humans. As a cancer cell increases in acidity, apoptosis is induced. In healthy cells, proton pump proteins allow for H⁺ ions to permeate cellular membranes, regulating pH. However, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole, prevent proton movement. In previous studies, omeprazole induced cell death in Jurkat T lymphocytes; however, there was no confirmation of whether the cells died through apoptosis, or through necrosis, where the cell bursts. By using Annexin-V staining, the effects of omeprazole, dexlansoprazole, and esomeprazole on apoptosis induction can be measured. Cell death was observed …

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer that is known to be an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC). Exposure to its primary metabolite, mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) and other secondary oxidative metabolites is associated with adverse health effects in vivo which are linked to interactions with nuclear hormone receptors such as peroxisome-proliferator activated receptors (PPARs). Although these molecules are chiral, differences in the toxicity of each stereoisomer are not well studied. By synthesizing the enantiomers of these molecules and testing their affinity for PPARγ by thermal shift assay (TSA), potential differences in binding affinity of each form can be determined. The myctophid genus Diaphus is known for having highly developed head photophores and nasal rosettes. The head photophores of Diaphus are typically enlarged and vary between species and possibly sexes. Diaphus dumerilii is also a macrosmatic species with large olfactory organs. The aim of this study is to quantify the variances in location, size, and shape of the head photophores and nasal rosettes between selected individuals from Diaphus dumerilii to understand how these variances relate to morphometric measurements such as body length, inferred maturity and nasal rosette size and shape. Little research has been done to examine the characteristics and learning strategies of teacher candidates who pass and who do not pass the Praxis examination. Studies have shown benefits in the use of self-regulation and achievement in courses and on other examinations. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between work-life balance and faculty perceptions of promotions in academia using Vroom’s (1964) Expectancy Theory of Motivation as the theoretical framework. The study was conducted at two universities in the Southeast, and all faculty were invited to participate in an online survey. Multiple regression analysis was used to test three hypotheses relating to expectancy, instrumentality, and valence. These three factors were used for the dependent variables. Social Attention And Autism Spectrum Disorder Phenotypes, Charlotte Martin

The Agora

Studies on social attention and motivation related to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have found that when presented with social and non-social stimuli, neurotypical individuals tend to pay more attention to the former, while individuals with ASD tend to do the inverse. In an effort to add to existing literature, we had participants complete an autism phenotype measure as well as a social attention measure. Contrary to expectations, we found no correlation between autism phenotypes and social attention behaviors. This study was limited by its sample size and diversity as well as the validity of the social attention measures used.

Background: Social determinants of health (SDOH) are associated with an increased risk of poor health outcomes and increased healthcare utilization (Buitron de la Vega et al, 2019). To achieve health equity, social determinants of health are an essential factor to assess. Practitioners (in the evaluated primary care setting) can document, track, update, and report SDOH through the electronic medical record (EMR). Yet, the electronic health record is not consistently being utilized for this purpose.

Implementing evidence-based practice requires professional clinical competence, institutional support, leadership skills, and a value for patient preferences. Leadership has been identified as a crucial component for implementing evidence-based practice. In this project, a transformational leadership model is utilized to implement evidence-based fetal monitoring in a rural community hospital through the work of a multidisciplinary team who set out to change practice and improve patient care for laboring women.

A class of distribution-free tests for the homogeneity of location parameters is proposed and compared with different competitors in terms of Pitman asymptotic relative efficiency. A numerical example is provided and a simulation study is made to check the performance of the tests.
