ImmanuelKant argues that thejudgment of taste should have universal validity. Whilethis proposition is closely related to language,littlehas been donefrom the perspective of language analysis. Thejudgment of taste demands everyone’s agreement, whichinvolves apriority and necessity. In both aspectsof this proposition,however, there is tension, as is indicated through language analysis. Therefore,in the judgment of taste we cannot demand consensusinbothaspects. Compared with the method of language analysis, the method of transcendental aestheticsneeds further reflection.

Three approaches to the relation between “laughter” and the “grotesque” may be recognized in aesthetic research, namely, Kayser’s, Bakhtin’s and the hybridity of both. A forth approach may be described from Foucault’s elaboration on laughter in his preface to The Order of Things, which may be termed as an approach of conducting aesthetic discursive practices of the grotesque by way of laughter. Foucault did not directly deal with the relation between the grotesque and laughter, but instead let out four laughs in his text. BertoltBrecht’s, RolandBarthes’ and Hans-ThiesLehmann’s uses of “theexterior” reflect their emphaseson theatrical signifiers, whichoutlinesthe relationship between mimetic theatre and self-referential theatre. Brecht advocates “exterior” performance and thinksthat actors do not have to feel the same as characters, affirming the difference between the signifier (the imitator) and the signified (the imitated). However, he pursues“scientific truth” and a real similarity between the signifier and the signified through exterior performance. The knowledge and disciplinary formation of foreign literature, world literature and comparative literature started in Western Europe inthe beginning of the 20thcentury, institutionalized in Anglo-American academia around the mid-20thand widely dispersed across the world, including China. This essay traces the genealogy of these disciplines from the perspectives of broad socio-political history, intellectual history, and academic history, focusing on the dispersion, transformation and Americanization of continental European theory (particularly French) of the 1960s onwards. The essay examines the U.S. academic professionalization and institutionalization, as well as politicization, or further radicalization, of the Continental European theory and their global implications.

This work uses the methodologies of both art history and medical sociology through the ‘syndemic’ framework to engage in close readings of two selected artworks, Exit (1997) by Nancer LeMoins and Violation of Africa (1984) by Affrekka Jefferson. An interdisciplinary approach to these works enables consideration of how multiple marginalized identities—i.e., living with a stigmatized illness, being a woman, being LGBTQIA+, being a person of color—appear in visual art and shape illness experience; these ideas are investigated through a formal and iconographic reading of the selected artworks. Introduction: This pilot study examined the effectiveness of 2 different 5-week reminder interventions to achieve adequate water intake and hydration in women as well as the effects of body composition and self-efficacy on hydration.

Methods: Twenty-two apparently healthy adult women were randomly assigned to the 64 oz. motivational water bottle group (n = 11), or the water reminder – daily tracker app group (n = 11). Body composition, predicted VO_2max, and self-efficacy were assessed at baseline, post 5-week intervention, and after a 30-day follow-up period. The present study aims to discover relationships between suggestibility and two predictor variables identified as achievement motivation, and body consciousness. The significance of this study is immense in placebo research due to the studied relationship of suggestibility as a predictor for placebo susceptibility. Lyria was one of a small handful of women who graduated from a Louisiana law school in the 1930’s. Despite the employment barriers facing female attorneys, she went on to become one of the first female law clerks in both the federal and state judiciary. To date, Lyria’s story has not been told. I have recently discovered, however, that Lyria’s children and grandchildren preserved her letters to her family. They are a treasure trove of information about a woman whose career took her from rural Louisiana to Louisiana’s highest court as well as the post-war ruins of Nazi Germany. The …
