Treatment Of Gingival Fenestration Using Mucoperiosteal Flap With Connective Tissue Graft: A Report Of Two Cases, Swati Jaglan, Shikha Tewari

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Fenestration term is derived from the Latin word ‘fenestra’ means ‘window’. Gingival fenestration is not found in routine while its actual occurrence is assumed to be higher. Additionally, if these mucogingival defects persist for a longer duration it may lead to adverse outcomes like compromised esthetics, hypersensitivity, plaque and calculus deposition, and susceptibility to dental caries. Present cases of gingival fenestration were successfully treated by using full-thickness flap elevation with connective tissue graft placement. Two cases were presented with the accumulation of plaque and calculus and having gingival fenestration to the respective sites. After phase 1 therapy, full thickness flap …

Guided-Mode-Resonance As A Source Of Entangled Photons, Henry Windish Apr 2023

Guided-Mode-Resonance As A Source Of Entangled Photons, Henry Windish

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

Four wave mixing is a phenomenon in nonlinear optics where interactions between two input frequencies produce new two new frequencies. This interaction arises from the third-order nonlinearity of the medium. I am using a variation of four wave mixing called degenerate four wave mixing. This is where the two input frequencies coincide, leading to the doubled input frequency producing resonances at two different frequencies.

3d Image Stitching In Oct, Xiangping Ouyang Apr 2023

3d Image Stitching In Oct, Xiangping Ouyang

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides volumetric microstructures of various biological objects, but its objective lens limits its field of view (FOV). We code a Python program using phase-only correlation and alpha blend algorithm on our samples’ overlapping areas to perform OCT 3D image stitching from multiple FOVs. This technique results in a panoramic image and required minimum user interaction. Finally, we process two datasets, AggreWells and colon samples, to successfully test the performance.

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Since the Internet era began, numerous earth science data services have been developed to facilitate data discovery (for example, data sources, documents, facts, visualization, opinions) and data access for research and application activities. For example, a large collection of NASA’s earth science data has been made searchable and freely downloadable over the Internet. Some value-added services even allow users to analyze and visualize many variables online (for example, 2,000+ in NASA Giovanni) without downloading data and software.

However, finding and discovering suitable datasets and information for interdisciplinary research (involving two or more scientific disciplines), applications, education, and other emerging activities …

Use Of Immigration Status For Coercive Control In Domestic Violence Protection Orders, Deirdre M. Bowen Apr 2023

Use Of Immigration Status For Coercive Control In Domestic Violence Protection Orders, Deirdre M. Bowen

Faculty Articles

In the context of domestic violence (DV), immigration-related circumstances can be exploited by an abuser to coerce and manipulate their partner. Using an intersectional structural framework, we examine how social structures overlaid with immigration-specific experiences operate to further enhance opportunities for abuse against immigrant women. We conducted a textual analysis to identify how socially constructed systems interact with a victim-survivor’s immigration status to introduce more tools for abusers to engage in coercive control and/or acts of violence in a random sample of petitioners (i.e., victim-survivors) who were granted a Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO) in King County, WA (n = …

New Community Sponsorships For Humanitarian Immigrants: Guidance On Washington’S Practice Of Law And Immigration Services Fraud Prevention Rules, Megan J. Ballard, Zaida C. Rivera Apr 2023

New Community Sponsorships For Humanitarian Immigrants: Guidance On Washington’S Practice Of Law And Immigration Services Fraud Prevention Rules, Megan J. Ballard, Zaida C. Rivera

Seattle University Law Review Online

Every state, including Washington, has enacted laws to protect the public from the harm caused when an unqualified person provides legal services. Each state defines the practice of law and generally limits that practice to members of the state bar association. In Washington, a complex collage of case law, statutes, and a Supreme Court rule attempt to define the practice of law, identify when the practice of law by a nonlawyer is unauthorized, and determine when public policy considerations allow such nonlawyer practice.

Protecting immigrants from unauthorized practice of immigration law is a particular concern. People who claim to be …

Physics

Shallow estuarine habitats are globally undergoing rapid changes due to climate change and anthropogenic influences, resulting in spatiotemporal shifts in distribution and habitat extent. Yet, scientists and managers do not always have rapidly available data to track habitat changes in real-time. In this study, we apply a novel and a state-of-the-art image segmentation machine learning technique (DeepLab) to two years of high-resolution drone-based imagery of a marine flowering plant species (eelgrass, a temperate seagrass). We apply the model to eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows in the Morro Bay estuary, California, an estuary that has undergone large eelgrass declines and the subsequent …

Synthesis Of 2-Bromo-6-Alkylaminopyridines, 2,6-Dialkylaminopyridines, And Tren Based Ligands, Stephanie E. Carter

Honors College Theses

Extended metal atom chains (EMAC) are multimetallic complexes that feature a linear metal chain with metal-metal bonds surrounded by stabilizing ligand molecules. When EMACs are formed with paramagnetic metal ions, unique magnetic properties can be derived from direct metal to metal communication. The challenge is that EMAC complexes are challenging to synthesize due to the inherent weakness of most M-M bonds and the specificity of the ligands required to stabilize EMACs. In prior work by the Guillet group, the silyl aminopyridine (SAP) ligands were observed to stabilize very unique triiron complexes, but they were inherently unstable. In other work, scaffolded …

Bioinformatic Analysis Of Mirna Mechanisms In Circadian Rhythm Using A Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model, Layton F. Coursey Apr 2023

Bioinformatic Analysis Of Mirna Mechanisms In Circadian Rhythm Using A Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model, Layton F. Coursey

Honors College Theses

MicroRNAs are noncoding RNAs found in cells and the bloodstream, which help to maintain proper protein production and overall gene expression1. Typically, microRNAs bind to messenger RNA (mRNA) in the cell cytoplasm, acting as post-transcriptional regulators, and either degrade or repress mRNA2. Due to microRNAs playing a vital role in gene expression by repressing protein production of target genes, if they are underexpressed then the protein it regulates could be overexpressed as a result.

miRNAs have the potential to be biomarkers for numerous neurodegenerative diseases. Neurodegeneration can be seen in many forms such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s (AD), Huntington’s Disease (HD), …

Understanding Groundwater Flow In A Saturated Buffer Zone ( Sbz ) Using Numerical Models: Case Study Of T 3 Site, Mclean County, Central Illinois, Nnaemeka Henry Nsude

Theses and Dissertations

Loss of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, from agricultural lands in the Midwest affects farm productivity and environmental quality. Nutrient runoff from lands discharged into streams degrades the aquatic ecosystem through eutrophication and subsequent hypoxic conditions. The presence of nitrogen also threatens the potability of numerous aquifer bodies globally due to their high solubility in water. To tackle this problem, best management practices such as Saturated Buffer Zone (SBZ) are implemented to reduce nitrogen from nitrate-laden tile water from agricultural lands before being discharged into streams. Groundwater flow and interactions at SBZ are not well understood. To aid the …

Narrowing The Achievement Gap By Increasing Student Opportunities In An Outdoor Project-Based Learning Environment, Britney Christensen Apr 2023

Narrowing The Achievement Gap By Increasing Student Opportunities In An Outdoor Project-Based Learning Environment, Britney Christensen

Masters Projects

The nation’s lack of student achievement on standardized tests is a result of the insufficient number of opportunities a student has to interact with their environment. Research indicates racial and economic disparities limit the number of chances these groups have to build the wide range of background knowledge needed to support the academic demands in the classroom. As a result, their performances show a widening of the achievement gap. Therefore, this project speaks to perspectives centered around constructivism as a way to explain how students acquire knowledge over time. The author contends that reading diverse texts, writing for different purposes, …

Recruitment And Retention Of Black Faculty At Predominantly White Institutions: Development Of Mentorship Within Academic Departments, Shayvonne L. Harris Apr 2023

Recruitment And Retention Of Black Faculty At Predominantly White Institutions: Development Of Mentorship Within Academic Departments, Shayvonne L. Harris

Masters Projects

Predominantly white institutions have a reoccurring issue recruiting and retaining Black faculty to their universities. While there is a limited number of them on these campus, Black faculty eventually leave predominantly white institutions due to cultural taxation, racism, discrimination, and student, as well as other faculty members, disregarding of their work/knowledge within their discipline. These faculty members are not supported well within this institution as well. Through review of the literature, I suggest creating a mentorship program paired with training regarding the importance of diverse faculty and their needs to be able to be successful at a predominantly white institution.

Reviving Agricultural Growth : Part - V, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Mechanization, technology and advisory services: one of the major constraints facing small holders is the lack of resources and knowledge about modern practices to adapt techniques of production using mechanization. The intensity of the use of machinery and implements by large farmers is one of the factors responsible for the wide differential in the productivity attained on their farms compared to that on small farms. A number of agritech companies have sprung up in the country but they are also mostly catering to the well-to-do and educated farmers, thus causing anxiety that this will further widen the productivity gap.

Plant Sentience: The Burden Of Proof, Jon Mallatt, David G. Robinson, Michael R. Blatt, Andreas Draguhn, Lincoln Taiz Apr 2023

Plant Sentience: The Burden Of Proof, Jon Mallatt, David G. Robinson, Michael R. Blatt, Andreas Draguhn, Lincoln Taiz

Animal Sentience

Segundo-Ortin & Calvo’s (2023) target article takes a less speculative and more evidence-based approach to plant sentience than did previous works promoting that idea. However, it retains many of the idea’s longstanding difficulties such as starting from a false dichotomy (plants must be either hardwired or sentient), not accepting the full burden of proof for an extraordinary claim, confusingly redefining accepted cognitive terms, implying cell consciousness, not adopting the most parsimonious explanations for plant behaviors, and downplaying all the counterevidence. We advise rectifying these problems before plant sentience can become a full-fledged scientific domain.
