The Overlap Of Diabetes And Osteoarthritis In American Populations., Harshita Nadella, Allan W. Bloom, Michelle Demory Beckler, Marc M. Kesselman

HPD Articles

Diabetes mellitus, a condition in which the body's ability to produce insulin is impaired, and osteoarthritis (OA), a painful degeneration of joint cartilage, are both serious conditions that affect millions of people in the United States (U.S.). Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative condition of the joint cartilage, affecting mainly the older population. The purpose of this paper is to find a connection, if any, between diabetes and osteoarthritis and if either condition can predispose an individual to the other. Not only can this review help to explain the co-existence of these two diseases, but it can also be used to …

Oligram: A Cleaner And Safer World, Joshua Mu '25 Apr 2023

Oligram: A Cleaner And Safer World, Joshua Mu '25

IMSA / Fermi STEM Pitch

OliGram, the rapid and affordable biofilm test kit, exploits the presence of cellulose in the extracellular matrix of a biofilm. Only produced by plants and bacteria, cellulose is a suitable biomarker for detecting biofilms as plants can likely be ruled out in most contexts. To indicate the presence of cellulose, OliGram utilizes oligothiophene h-FTAA, a chemical marker which binds to cellulose molecules to create fluorescent complexes. Under a particular wavelength of light, this complex emits light of a corresponding wavelength; on the other hand, if none of the complex was formed, then no light is emitted. Thus, with this rapid …

Selenium Removal By Sediments And Plants At The Constructed Pariette Wetlands, Utah (Usa), Colleen P. Jones, Michael Amacher, Paul R. Grossl, Astrid R. Jacobson

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Selenium (Se) contamination of public lands and water is a result of irrigated agriculture and mining activities in areas rich in Se geologic deposits. Pariette Draw is part of the northern Colorado Plateau and is an area of concern for Se contamination in the Pariette Wetlands. Pariette Wetlands, a wetland built in the 1970s to provide wildlife habitat, is distinguished by its arid climate and a short growing season of hot dry summers followed by cold winters with several months below freezing. An understanding of how Se is mobilized and removed within the wetland will provide management strategies that minimize …

The Negative Effect Of Criminal Labeling On Community Reentry In The Harrisonburg Area, Caroline Warren Apr 2023

The Negative Effect Of Criminal Labeling On Community Reentry In The Harrisonburg Area, Caroline Warren

Honors Projects

When a person is convicted of a crime, they are assigned the label of being a criminal. After their conviction, felons are punished for their actions, often through prison sentences, and once these sentences are completed, they are expected to reenter society. However, as described in Labeling Theory, the criminal label carries a social stigma that poses many challenges to successful community reentry. Society’s negative attitudes toward released felons are perpetuated by misguided policies based on the principles of incapacitation and retribution. As a result, criminal offenders are permanently marginalized and face restrictions on housing, employment, and other aspects of …

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication that contributes to increased length of hospital stay, impaired recovery, and can affect long-term outcomes. Recently, research has been conducted to determine if certain anesthetic agents decrease the likelihood of developing POD. However, no clear protocol for prevention exists. This scoping review aimed to analyze the current literature to determine the efficacy of dexmedetomidine versus propofol at preventing POD.

User Classification Based On Mouse Dynamic Authentication Using K-Nearest Neighbor, Didih Rizki Chandranegara, Anzilludin Ashari, Zamah Sari, Hardianto Wibowo, Wildan Suharso

Makara Journal of Technology

Mouse dynamics authentication is a method for identifying a person by analyzing the unique pattern or rhythm of their mouse movement. Owing to its distinctive properties, such mouse movements can be used as the basis for security. The development of technology is followed by the urge to keep private data safe from hackers. Therefore, increasing the accuracy of user classification and reducing the false acceptance rate (FAR) are necessary to improve data security. In this study, we propose to combine the K-nearest neighbor method and simple random sampling and obtain a sample from a dataset to improve the classification of …

Sustainability Of Form-Based Zoning Codes In An Existing Suburb, Elvira Batelaan Apr 2023

Sustainability Of Form-Based Zoning Codes In An Existing Suburb, Elvira Batelaan

Community and Regional Planning Program: Professional Projects

Most planners and architects agree that the current rate of growth and sprawl in American cities is not sustainable. This thesis will explore how form-based zoning codes can be used to implement policies that increase the sustainability of an existing suburb. Typically, form-based zoning codes are applied to either new subdivisions in a city or to an overlay district in a city which does not get to the heart of the issue. A solution is needed for the rest of the city, such as downtown, industrial areas and existing suburbs, to further increase the sustainability of the entire city. In …

Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain Prevention: A Collaborative Approach With Nursing And Occupational Therapy In Acute Care, Ebonee V. Cole, Ms, Otr/L, Cbis Apr 2023

Hemiplegic Shoulder Pain Prevention: A Collaborative Approach With Nursing And Occupational Therapy In Acute Care, Ebonee V. Cole, Ms, Otr/L, Cbis

Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctorate Culminating Presentations

Introduction: Hemiplegic shoulder pain (HSP) is one of the most common and disabling complications of arm hemiplegia after stroke (Anwer & Alghadir, 2020), with a prevalence as high as 75% of strokes (Xie et al., 2021). HSP can develop as early as the second week (Praveen Raj et al., 2021), may continue several months after stroke in 65% of patients (Kumar, 2019), and is associated with reduced functional arm use (Kumar, 2019). Prevention is the ideal management strategy of HSP (K. Walsh, 2001). Implementing hemiplegic arm management techniques, such as positioning and handling, is key to preventing HSP. In the …

Going All-In With Vector Representations Of Electric And Magnetic Fields In Introductory Calculus-Based Physics, Craig Looney Apr 2023

Going All-In With Vector Representations Of Electric And Magnetic Fields In Introductory Calculus-Based Physics, Craig Looney

Physics Faculty Publications

While most introductory calculus-based textbooks introduce a fully-vectorized expression for the electric field due to a point charge, they rarely – if ever – introduce a fully-vectorized expression for the magnetic field due to an infinitely long current, and corresponding field superposition problems are normally solved by the method of components (find magnitudes, break magnitudes into components, sum the respective components). In this poster I will explain why I teach a fully-vectorized approach – starting with the fully-vectorized field expressions and summing the fields vector-algebraically – alongside the more traditional method of components in my introductory calculus-based physics course, and …

Synergetic Synthesis Of Multivariate Nonlinear Dynamic Objects, Isamiddin Siddikov, Komil Usmanov Apr 2023

Synergetic Synthesis Of Multivariate Nonlinear Dynamic Objects, Isamiddin Siddikov, Komil Usmanov

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

Based on the synergetic approach, the article solves the problem of analyzing a chemical reactor as a control object and formulates recommendations on the structural and topological synthesis of various control system options. The main feature of technological control objects, in which, as a result of hydromechanical, physical, chemical influences on the flows of the starting substances, their physical properties, state of aggregation and composition change, is their multidimensionality, nonlinearity, multiconnectedness, as well as parametric uncertainty of the mathematical model at the design stage. This type of facility includes a chemical reactor, thermal management, which in most cases is carried …

Power Amplifier Based On Composite Injection-Voltaic Transistors, Nodira Batirdjanovna Alimova Apr 2023

Power Amplifier Based On Composite Injection-Voltaic Transistors, Nodira Batirdjanovna Alimova

Chemical Technology, Control and Management

The problem of high-current radio engineering devices is related to the fact that the use of high-power transistors and other semiconductor devices is limited by such a phenomenon as a secondary breakdown, in which there is a sharp decrease in the voltage on the device with simultaneous internal current lacing, and the device fails. To solve the problem of secondary breakdown, schemes have been proposed that operate stably at reverse voltage values 4-5 times higher than usual and at power dissipation 2-3 times higher than the maximum allowable power for an individual device. The problem is proposed to be solved …

What Makes A Salesman: Death Of A Salesman And The Politics Of Adaptation, Thomas Alvarez Apr 2023

What Makes A Salesman: Death Of A Salesman And The Politics Of Adaptation, Thomas Alvarez

Honors Scholar Theses

Arthur Miller has regularly been regarded as one of the most prominent American playwrights of all time, producing timeless and often innately political works designed in part to speak to his perspective on history as it has taken shape. This thesis will discuss the 1951, 1966, and 1985 American adaptations of Death of a Salesman—one of his greatest defining works—to draw attention to his specific perspective while exploring how this messaging can be recontextualized when decades and mediums separate an adaptation from its source text. Furthermore, this thesis will explore choices made by actors and screenplay writers, working to ascertain …

The Sharp Bounds Of A Quasi-Isometry Of P-Adic Numbers In A Subset Real Plane, Kathleen Zopff Apr 2023

The Sharp Bounds Of A Quasi-Isometry Of P-Adic Numbers In A Subset Real Plane, Kathleen Zopff

Undergraduate Theses

P-adic numbers are numbers valued by their divisibility by high powers of some prime, p. These numbers are an important concept in number theory that are used in major ideas such as the Reimann Hypothesis and Andrew Wiles’ proof of Fermat’s last theorem, and also have applications in cryptography. In this project, we will explore various visualizations of p-adic numbers. In particular, we will look at a mapping of p-adic numbers into the real plane which constructs a fractal similar to a Sierpinski p-gon. We discuss the properties of this map and give formulas for the sharp bounds of its …

Honors College Theses

This paper will examine how Russia’s foreign policy politically, economically, and culturally affected all of the nations in the Balkan region during the first years of the Cold War. I will further look into the differences and similarities between Russia’s interests and geopolitics in the context of the different disagreements in the region of the Balkans that concerned the Soviet Union, such as the Balkan Pact (1953), the Cyprus Agreement (1960) or the Warsaw Pact (1955), which will be discussed later. The focus will be on how the different leaders of the Soviet Union (Joseph Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev) changed …

Gonads Without Glp-1: Silencing Glp-1 In The Male Somatic Gonad In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Matthew Titus Apr 2023

Gonads Without Glp-1: Silencing Glp-1 In The Male Somatic Gonad In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Matthew Titus

Undergraduate Theses

In C. elegans, the gene glp-1 encodes for a Notch receptor called GLP-1, one of two found in C. elegans’ genome. The gene has been previously implicated in the development of the hermaphroditic germline as well as playing a role in the mitosis/meiosis decision. Genetic screening has further identified it as potentially playing a role in the development of the male somatic gonad, making it an ideal candidate for a reverse genetic. We did this by silencing glp-1 and observing if any alterations to the gonad’s phenotype occur.

Normally this could be done by performing a gene knockout. …

The Mental Health Epidemic In Veterinary Medicine: An Analysis Of Burnout In The Veterinary Field, Hannah Eckstein Apr 2023

The Mental Health Epidemic In Veterinary Medicine: An Analysis Of Burnout In The Veterinary Field, Hannah Eckstein

Undergraduate Theses

The Mayo Clinic describes burnout as a specific type of stress that involves a state of physical or emotional exhaustion. This exhaustion can lead to a lowered sense of accomplishment and negative personal identity. Despite burnout not being an actual diagnosis, many researchers believe there are several mental health components that contribute to burnout, such as depression and anxiety. Several factors are known to contribute to specifically work-related burnout, including lack of control, work-life imbalance, lack of social support, and extremes of the activity. All of the above factors relate to the veterinary field. In one study, 6.8% of male …
