Towards the end of his writing career, Bienvenido Santos published two autobiographies, Memory’s Fictions and Postscript to Saintly Life—a departure in a writing life mostly devoted to penning fictional works. This paper focuses on the last autobiography which mainly looks at Santos’s experiences as a pensionado in America. It pays attention to how Santos writes about his Philippine home while in exile, taking part in a program that is part of the American colonial period. The range of Santos’s emotions—with shame and pride on both ends—while abroad is also examined. How these emotions were manifested in the book served …

Purely affective interaction allows the welfare of an individual to depend on her own actions and on the profile of welfare levels of others. Under an assumption on the structure of mutual affection that we interpret as “non-explosive mutual affection,” we show that equilibria of simultaneous-move affective interaction are Pareto optimal independently of whether or not an induced standard game exists. Moreover, if purely affective interaction in-duces a standard game, then an equilibrium profile of actions is a Nash equilibrium of the game, and this Nash equilibrium and Pareto optimal profile of strategies is locally dominant.

This research aims to analyze a mathematics HOTS instrument using the Rasch Model to provide a better measurement instrument for mathematics. The result showed, based on Rasch Model analysis, 1) from 20 items, there are only ten items that can be used to measure HOTS of students in mathematics with the difficulty of 3 items being hard and seven items being easy; 2) the reliabilities of the instrument are moderate; 3) the instrument only can divide students into two groups of level ability; and 4) there is no significant differential item functioning (DIF) bias detected on the instrument

This study aims to develop an instrument based on general science in chemistry practicums on thermochemistry and reaction rates. This study was R&D with the ADDIE model, namely analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The instruments used are validation sheets, reliability test sheets, and questionnaires. This paper examines how relationships are ‘built’ among khwajasaras [non-normative non-binary persons] and female jouno karmis [sex workers] in two sites in Pakistan and India respectively. We focus on the non-normative nature of these relationships, first, to disassemble gender normativity itself; second, to argue that the colonial legacy of bureaucratic norming of kinship in South Asia, anchored in legal consanguinity and affinity on one hand, and territory and patriarchy on the other, erases these found relationships. Polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration has gained increasing attention as a selective separation process to remove small solutes, such as metal ions, from water or wastewater. Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is one of the metal ions in wastewater that has received considerable attention because of its toxicity. Chitosan was used in this study as the polymer to bind Cr(VI) to enhance its removal by ultrafiltration. The effects of chitosan-to-Cr(VI) ratio on Cr(VI) rejection and permeate flux were investigated. In addition, the fouling tendency was evaluated. Stroke has long been a major health concern in Malaysia, with cerebrovascular disease accounting for one-third of all deaths. Patients who have had a stroke have varying degrees of movement impairment, which can be improved with physiotherapy. A smart glove system is proposed in this paper to measure and visualize patient finger flexes in real-time remotely and record these flexes for further analysis to monitor and assess patient physiotherapy sessions. Incorporating promising biomarkers into cancer screening practices for early-detection is increasingly appealing because of the unsatisfactory performance of current cancer screening strategies. The matched case-control design is commonly adopted in biomarker development studies to evaluate the discriminative power of biomarker candidates, with an intention to eliminate confounding effects. Data from matched case-control studies have been routinely analyzed by the conditional logistic regression, although the assumed logit link between biomarker combinations and disease risk may not always hold. We propose a conditional concordance-assisted learning method, which is distribution-free, for identifying an optimal combination of biomarkers to discriminate cases and controls. We …

Adherence to using offloading treatment is crucial to healing diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs). Offloading adherence is recommended to be measured using objective monitors. However, self-reported adherence is commonly used and has unknown validity and reliability. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of self-reported adherence to using removable cast walker (RCW) offloading treatment among people with DFUs. Fifty-three participants with DFUs using RCWs were included. Each participant self-reported their percentage adherence to using their RCW of total daily steps.
