Essays On The Economics Of Sports Wagering Markets, Jacob Lamb
Essays On The Economics Of Sports Wagering Markets, Jacob Lamb
All Dissertations
Economists have long been enamored with using wagering markets and sports data to answer various economic questions. Wagering market data are readily available to answer any number of questions relating to sports and economics. However, most studies surrounding wagering markets have focused on searching for inefficiencies and, consequently, profitable betting strategies against the house. This dissertation takes a different approach, focusing on the information that can be extracted from efficient wagering markets and using that information to answer economic questions. Rather than hunting for inefficiencies, this dissertation confirms the efficiency of wagering markets and uses wagering markets to answer questions …
Vanet Applications Under Loss Scenarios & Evolving Wireless Technology, Adil Alsuhaim
Vanet Applications Under Loss Scenarios & Evolving Wireless Technology, Adil Alsuhaim
All Dissertations
In this work we study the impact of wireless network impairment on the performance of VANET applications such as Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), and other VANET applications that periodically broadcast messages. We also study the future of VANET application in light of the evolution of radio access technologies (RAT) that are used to exchange messages. Previous work in the literature proposed fallback strategies that utilizes on-board sensors to recover in case of wireless network impairment, those methods assume a fixed time headway value, and do not achieve string stability. In this work, we study the string stability of a …
My Superintendent Journey From Educator To Activist: An Autoethnography Across Three Decades, Betty Bagley
My Superintendent Journey From Educator To Activist: An Autoethnography Across Three Decades, Betty Bagley
All Dissertations
Superintendents rise to the highest level of professional educational leadership within local communities. National statistics show increasing turnover in that district-level position. Superintendents come and go, which means their accomplishments fade in time. Superintendents rarely tell their stories of successes, failures, pressures, expectations, challenges, or any experiences within their highly visible role. This gap shows a lack of access to superintendents’ perspectives, and that gap may affect current and aspiring superintendents’ potential.
Given a two-century historical gap in the literature about educational leadership with few accounts from superintendents’ perspectives, my study described my journey through three superintendencies from 1993 to …

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infectious clinical entities in both community and hospital settings. They have a broad range of clinical severity yet inflict large epidemiological burden of morbidity and mortality on patients and the healthcare system with billions of dollars in cost of treatment. Understanding what methods are optimal for diagnosing UTIs are critical to mitigate the marked impact and cost of these infections.
Chapter 1 and 2 in this work surveys the broad array of diagnostic modalities for UTIs and highlights their advantages and limitations in the context of the current standard of …
Instructional Leadership Practices And Problem-Solving Processes Among Secondary School Principals During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Matthew Moore
Instructional Leadership Practices And Problem-Solving Processes Among Secondary School Principals During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Matthew Moore
All Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore principals’ reflections on effective instructional leadership problem-solving and practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Generally, principals have very few evidence-based guidelines for providing instructional leadership during a global pandemic, presumably, improvising solutions to novel instructional challenges. To generate selected secondary principals’ reflections about instructional challenges during COVID-19, I used the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), an open-ended method developed by Flanagan (1954) for ascertaining participants. I selected 10 secondary school principals from the 20-school district region in a single state in the Charlotte-Atlanta corridor. All began their professional careers as teachers and their service …
A Study On Asymmetric Perfect Vortex: Fractional Orbital Angular Momentum And Nonlinear Interaction, Kunjian Dai
A Study On Asymmetric Perfect Vortex: Fractional Orbital Angular Momentum And Nonlinear Interaction, Kunjian Dai
All Dissertations
In this work, the manipulation including generation and detection of the asymmetric perfect vortex (APV) carrying fractional orbital angular momentum (OAM) was demonstrated and discussed. All the manipulation of the modes is in real-time which provides a perfect tool for sensing the dynamic properties of complex media. The OAM-involved nonlinear conversion, specifically the second-harmonic generation (SHG) using the APV and asymmetric Bessel-Gaussian (BG) beams was studied in detail.
The generation and detection of the APV are based on the HOBBIT concept which includes acoustic optical deflector (AOD) and log-polar coordinate transformation optics. The RF signal driving the AOD allows the …

Bridging The Gap Between Phase Behavior And Processing For Renewable And Refinable Carbonaceous Precursors, Graham Tindall
Bridging The Gap Between Phase Behavior And Processing For Renewable And Refinable Carbonaceous Precursors, Graham Tindall
All Dissertations
As a category of materials, engineered carbons, specifically carbon fibers, are first-in-class for properties such as modulus, specific strength, and thermal resilience; however, the inability to directly process atomic carbon necessitates the development and optimization of carbonaceous precursors. Because the structure and properties of carbon are highly dependent on the precursors and requisite processing, numerous materials have been investigated as feedstocks for large-scale production. Although cellulose and rayon were among the first investigated, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is the current hegemon of carbon fiber precursors. PAN feeds 90% of this market, but it is neither inexpensive nor renewable. Because a significant fraction …

“The People Make The Place”: Evaluating Mattering’S Influence On Graduate Students’ Intentions To Graduate, Kenzie Hurley
All Dissertations
Despite graduate students working hard and sacrificing various aspects of their lives (e.g., social time, personal time) to attend graduate school, an estimated 50% fail to complete their degrees (e.g., Gilmore et al., 2016). The literature varies in its explanations for graduate students discontinuing their education; however, consensus indicates improving social aspects of the graduate program experience (e.g., positive research communities) may increase graduation rates. These findings are especially true for students who are new to their graduate program. Although there has been a recent emphasis on understanding some social aspects of the graduate student experience, the literature lacks information …
Essays On Manufacturing And Growth, Hugo Vaca Pereira Rocha
Essays On Manufacturing And Growth, Hugo Vaca Pereira Rocha
All Dissertations
The first chapter of this dissertation studies the role of human capital in generating economic convergence through its impact on manufacturing productivity growth and allocation of labor across sectors of the economy. I confirm and extend existing results showing that productivity in manufacturing – unlike its economy-wide counterpart – has exhibited convergence; that is, countries further behind the technology frontier tend to catch up to those on the frontier. I then show that the convergence in manufacturing is (a) somewhat accelerated by countries’ tertiary education levels and (b) faster in high-tech industries. Perhaps surprisingly, this is not driven by tertiary …

Cancer refers to a group of diseases containing more than 200 different subtypes. Cancer is a heterogeneous disease by nature, meaning that there are differences among tumors of the same type in different patients, and there are differences among cancer cells within a single tumor of one patient. Since cancer is not a single disease, nor does it have a single cause, it proves to be incredibly hard to diagnose and treat. The ability to study cellular markers, cell and tissue spatial arrangement, and gene function are all integral parts of cancer diagnostic and treatment efforts.
Here, I first present …
Computational Modeling Of Patterned Membranes And Spacers For Improved Hydrodynamics And Fouling Reduction In Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Processes, Zuo Zhou
All Dissertations
My research goal is to discover ways to improve the hydrodynamics of reverse osmosis (RO) membrane systems through creative membrane surface patterning and spacer designs. Since concentration polarization (CP) usually promotes membrane fouling, improving hydrodynamics would result in reduced fouling and better membrane performance. With computational fluid dynamics (CFD), we can explore dozens or even hundreds of models with different geometries and boundary conditions. Through plotting their velocity profile, streamlines, shear stress, pressure profile, concentration profile, and so on, we can determine which design would lead to the best performance.
At first, patterned membranes were evaluated and compared with flat …

Meaning Matters: Cognitive Crafting As A Sensemaking Mechanism And Motivational Process To Enhance Gig Driver Well-Being, Gwendolyn Paige Watson
All Dissertations
As the gig work sector of the workforce continues to grow, organizational psychologists must actively contribute to raising the bar for gig drivers (e.g., ride-hailing, food delivery) so that they are not merely surviving but also thriving through their work. In my dissertation, I tested cognitive crafting as a positive meaning-making process that helps gig drivers make sense of their interactions with customers, generates positive, motivating states such as work engagement, and promotes positive outcomes such as work-related well-being and job satisfaction. My dissertation employed a mixed-methods design. The daily diary built on qualitative data results that identified interesting - …
Molecular Dynamics Simulation On Molybdenum Disulfide: Thermal-Mechanical Properties And Phase Transitions Under External Loading, Mahabubur Rahman
Molecular Dynamics Simulation On Molybdenum Disulfide: Thermal-Mechanical Properties And Phase Transitions Under External Loading, Mahabubur Rahman
All Dissertations
Due to their remarkable properties, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received much scientific interest throughout the past decade. Two layers of chalcogen atoms (S, Se, Te) sandwich a layer of transition metal atoms (Mo, W, Ta) to form the three-atom thick unit cell in TMDs. The interaction between TMD "single layers" is mediated by neighboring chalcogen planes and bonded by Van der Waals forces. Due to this weak out-of-plane interaction, bulk samples can be thinned down to a single layer by exfoliation. Among the TMDs, Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) shows promise in the field of electronics, optics, and sensing …
Epidemiological Approaches For Practical Solutions To Pertinent Peanut Problems, Hope Becton
Epidemiological Approaches For Practical Solutions To Pertinent Peanut Problems, Hope Becton
All Dissertations
Peanut is an important food crop grown in the southeastern region of the United States. Diseases are the most yield-limiting component in peanut production with one of the most important being late leaf spot (LLS), caused by Nothopassalora personata (Np). The disease initially appears in the lower canopy as dark brown to black lesions and conidiophores bearing conidia are produced on the abaxial side of the lesion. Np is passively dispersed primarily by wind and rain events. Spore traps were used to detect and quantify conidia captured up to 70 m from an inoculum source and to further assess …
A Multi-Pronged Investigation To Identify Genes Affecting The Autoregulation Of Nodulation: Lasercapture Microdissection And The Barely Any Meristem Gene Family In Medicago Truncatula, Jacklyn Thomas
All Dissertations
The unique evolutionary adaptation of legumes for nitrogen-fixing symbiosis leading to nodulation is tightly regulated by the host plant. One pathway negatively regulates the number of nodules formed in response to the metabolic status of the shoot (carbon) and root (nitrogen); this long-distance systemic regulation is the autoregulation of nodulation (AON) pathway. AON is a root to shoot pathway that allows the plant to limit the number of nodules formed on roots. Central to the receptor complex in the shoots is a leucine-rich-repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK) called MtSUNN mutation of which results in plants with too many nodules. SUNN …

All Dissertations
In the past decade, the healthcare industry has seen a significant increase in the use of additive manufacturing (AM or “3D printing”) with subsequent improvement in clinical outcomes. As an exceptional AM technology, vat-photopolymerization (VP), often called stereolithography, can create complex structures and has thus been adopted for a range of biomedical applications including surgical guides, temporary implants, and resorbable tissue scaffolds. However, limitations remain in the availability of photopolymerizable resin materials with appropriate mechanical performance, biodegradability, and biocompatibility for application to resorbable medical devices.
The objective of this work was to employ novel photopolymerizable polyester-based macromers in the development of resorbable …
Accessible Virtual Reality For Older Adults, Aaron Gluck
Accessible Virtual Reality For Older Adults, Aaron Gluck
All Dissertations
Virtual reality (VR) has grown significantly since the commercial release of the Oculus Rift in March 2016. This growth accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, revolutionizing how individuals and businesses work, socialize, exercise, and stay entertained. However, commercial VR systems are not designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. While researchers have explored aspects of VR accessibility for people with disabilities, there is minimal research on accessible VR for older adults. Older adults (65+) self-report the highest rate of disabilities which may result in VR accessibility barriers, making this the ideal group to study the accessibility of VR.

Mesoscale Modeling Of Controlled Degradation In Polymer Networks And Melts, Vaibhav Palkar
Mesoscale Modeling Of Controlled Degradation In Polymer Networks And Melts, Vaibhav Palkar
All Dissertations
Controlled degradation of polymers finds various applications in fields ranging from the design of functional soft materials to recycling of polymers. In several of these applications, the characteristic length scale at which relevant processes occur ranges from nanometers to microns, typically referred to as the mesoscale. Although analytical models and continuum approaches inform our current understanding, analysis of degradation at the mesoscale is exceptionally limited. For modeling degradation at the mesoscale, we use the Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) technique and the LAMMPS simulation software. Within the DPD framework, we model controlled degradation or the breaking of covalent bonds within a …
Opioid Prescribing Practice & Policy – A Study Of Medicaid Pediatric Population In South Carolina, Laksika Sivaraj
Opioid Prescribing Practice & Policy – A Study Of Medicaid Pediatric Population In South Carolina, Laksika Sivaraj
All Dissertations
Opioids are widely used as analgesics in different clinical settings, but they are also highly criticized for their downsides. Among the adult population, the addictive nature of opioids continues to be the main concern, while among young children, there are other adverse health outcomes that opioids can cause. These concerns have led the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other professional bodies to discourage opioid prescribing for children. Nevertheless, opioids continue to be prescribed for children for contraindicated health conditions. The goal of this research is to assess opioid prescribing practices for the pediatric population in South Carolina (SC). …
Structuring Ai Teammate Communication: An Exploration Of Ai's Communication Strategies In Human-Ai Teams, Rui Zhang
All Dissertations
In the past decades, artificial intelligence (AI) has been implemented in various domains to facilitate humans in their work, such as healthcare and the automotive industry. Such application of AI has led to increasing attention on human-AI teaming, where AI closely collaborates with humans as a teammate. AI as a teammate is expected to have the ability to coordinate with humans by sharing task-related information, predicting other teammates’ behaviors, and progressing team tasks accordingly. To complete these team activities effectively, AI teammates must communicate with humans, such as sharing updates and checking team progress. Even though communication is a core …
Two Essays In Human Capital, Illia Polovnikov
Two Essays In Human Capital, Illia Polovnikov
All Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of two essays on human capital. I analyze how early-life human capital boost shapes micro-level outcomes among disadvantaged children in the US. In the second chapter, I study the productivity convergence among OECD countries and evaluate to what extent the labor force’s sectoral allocation (due to different human capital profiles across countries) contributes to it. In the first chapter, which is joint work with Jorge Garc´ia and William Dougan, we analyze a large-scale trial of an early-childhood education program targeting premature, low-birthweight children, thereby oversampling twins. We find that failing to account for this oversampling obscures …
Circumventing Ableism: A Grounded Theory Study Exploring Caregiver Strategies To Promote A Positive Identity, June Furr
All Dissertations
This qualitative research study explores how caregivers and persons with disabilities navigate the rhetoric of disability and caregiving through the interviews of fifteen caregivers and fifteen persons with disabilities using the lens of grounded theory and Burke’s (1952) dramatistic pentad. Significant findings describe how focused disability description can circumvent ableism when rhetorical resources that assist caregivers and persons with disabilities to navigate the rhetoric in disability descriptions are provided. Disability description theory includes the three stages that define, collaborate and revise, and practice and apply a disability description. This qualitative research offers an introduction into the phenomenon of …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that affect expatriate teacher retention. The research aimed to identify the factors that contribute to expatriate teacher adaptation and retention in cross-cultural settings. As the demand for expatriate teachers has increased with the growth of international schools, retaining them has become a persistent challenge. The scarcity of literature on expatriate teacher retention, combined with high turnover rates and an expanding demand for such teachers, highlights the need for further research in this area. Therefore, this study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the factors that impact expatriate teacher retention …
Explaining Spatio-Temporal Evolution Of Extreme Hydro-Climatic Events Using A Complex Network Framework, Somnath Mondal
Explaining Spatio-Temporal Evolution Of Extreme Hydro-Climatic Events Using A Complex Network Framework, Somnath Mondal
All Dissertations
Severe hydroclimatic extreme events, such as droughts, heatwaves, and heavy rainfall, are occurring with increasing frequency and causing significant impacts on both people and the environment. These events also compound in space and time, leading to even more significant consequences. Therefore, it is essential to comprehend these phenomena' concurrent and time-delayed progression across different temporal and spatial scales to address adaptation and mitigation effectively. To accurately understand and map the co-evolution of extreme events, it's necessary to have a thorough grasp of their spatiotemporal patterns, how they propagate and interact with one another, and the underlying mechanisms driving their occurrence. …
Contrasting Public And Private Approaches To Private Land Conservation In The United States: Local Government, Land Trust, And Landowner Viewpoints, Anna Overby
All Dissertations
In the United States (US), low-density, non-contiguous development, termed sprawl, has long been of widespread concern. Since the 1970s, rural residential sprawl, or exurban sprawl, has grown faster than any other development pattern. Exurban sprawl is development beyond the urban/suburban fringe with ties to the urban environment, such as employment and consumption, rather than to rural economies. Exurban sprawl is highly consumptive of land and has implications for conservation, natural resource management, agriculture, and communities. This study explores two main avenues of exurban sprawl prevention in the US: voluntary conservation easements and local government growth management regulations. The use of …

When Less Is More: How Increasing The Complexity Of Machine Learning Strategies For Geothermal Energy Assessments May Not Lead Toward Better Estimates, Stanley P. Mordensky, John Lipor, Jacob Deangelo, Erick R. Burns, Cary R. Lindsey
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Previous moderate- and high-temperature geothermal resource assessments of the western United States utilized data-driven methods and expert decisions to estimate resource favorability. Although expert decisions can add confidence to the modeling process by ensuring reasonable models are employed, expert decisions also introduce human and, thereby, model bias. This bias can present a source of error that reduces the predictive performance of the models and confidence in the resulting resource estimates.
Our study aims to develop robust data-driven methods with the goals of reducing bias and improving predictive ability. We present and compare nine favorability maps for geothermal resources in the …
