As Americans, we are conditioned to believe that involving partisans in the administration of elections is inherently problematic. Understandably. The United States is a major outlier; virtually every other developed democracy mandates nonpartisan election administration. Whether on the left or right— especially since the 2020 election—we are barraged with headlines about actual or feared partisanship on the part of those who run our elections. What this narrative misses, however, is a crucial and underrecognized fact: by design, partisans have always played central roles at every level of U.S. election administration. One of the perennial fault-lines in monetary theory is that between commodity and credit theories of money. The emergence of alternative payment systems based on blockchain and distributed ledger technologies, of which Bitcoin is the most prominent example, has raised a host of important questions in relation to this debate. This article considers two. The first is ontological: Are Bitcoin and similar ‘cryptocurrencies’ best conceived of as money? The second is political: Do these money candidates represent an emancipatory development over state-backed fiat currency? The ontological question, we will argue, invites the political one. Tools that alert developers about library vulnerabilities depend on accurate, up-to-date vulnerability databases which are maintained by security researchers. These databases record the libraries related to each vulnerability. However, the vulnerability reports may not explicitly list every library and human analysis is required to determine all the relevant libraries. Human analysis may be slow and expensive, which motivates the need for automated approaches. Researchers and practitioners have proposed to automatically identify libraries from vulnerability reports using extreme multi-label learning (XML). Recent investigations have demonstrated that it might be challenging to identify faces in the images taken using a long-distance camera. A face seems blurry in these images because of the presence of atmospheric turbulence. To examine how atmospheric turbulence impacts face biometrics, we establish a simulated environment that exhibits different degrees of turbulence. We employed the Rytov Variance, which relies on the distance and refractive index, C2 n, to get various turbulence levels. The nationwide movement for criminal justice reform has produced numerous proposals to amend procedural and sentencing practices in the American criminal justice system. These include plans to abolish mandatory minimum schemes in criminal sentencing; address discrimination in charging, convicting, and sentencing; reform drug policy; rectify discriminatory policies and practices in policing; assist incarcerated individuals in re-entering society when released from prison; and reorganize our system of juvenile justice. The number of Venezuelan immigrants living in the U.S. reached 545,000 in 2021, with Venezuelans becoming one of the fastest growing immigrant groups in the U.S. Many Venezuelan immigrants have been driven to leave their country due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis, economic collapse, and political instability. This study explores the experiences of Venezuelan immigrants living in the U.S. Data from an online survey and semi-structured interviews was collected from 113 Venezuelan immigrants. Many ELs frequently exit from language assistance programs because they perform well on social language tests and sound proficient in language interchange, due to strong basic interpersonal communication skills. However, they may still struggle in content areas due to poor academic language proficiency. The De Beer/De Boer Family Collection spans 130 years of family history in Sioux County, Iowa. The De Beer/De Boer family are descendants of the pioneer E. J. G. Bloemendaal. The collection highlights Christian educational material both in school and church, includes a scrapbook about a serviceman’s military career in World War II, and also shows the progression of landowning by farmers in Sioux County. Family photographs depict day-to-day 19th-century farm life, especially children playing outdoors. There are also 18 personal letters written by Gerhard and Ann Scholten (in Dutch) from Chicago in 1883.

Objective: the assessment of distal cantilever length in implant supported prothesis (Hybrid prosthesis) by comparing the load to fracture in two different esthetic framework materials (Zirconia and Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)) with two different cantilevers loading distances (10mm, 15mm).

Material and methods: 20 frameworks were fabricated and divided into 4 groups (n=5): according to the material type, Peek, zirconia, and according to the cantilever loading distance (10), or (15) mm and a load-to-fracture test was used until complete fracture of specimens occurs.

During endodontic treatment in multi-rooted teeth, furcation perforation refers to an opening in the pulpal floor, leading to a communication with the periodontal ligament space. A three-dimensional hermetic seal, with a biocompatible material, is a key point for the success of pulp floor perforation repair. MTA® has been considered, for a long time, as a gold standard in furcation perforation repair. Besides, BiodentineTM, when used for the same purpose, showed considerable performance and good results. The purpose of this paper was to report the management of an iatrogenic perforation of pulpal floor in the maxillary right first molar, using BiodentineTM.

This investigation into the effectiveness of Wave Function Collapse as a Procedural Content Generation Technique (PCG) in Minecraft sets out to determine whether this method can be used easily by players and game designers to generate content that mimics the original content. We also set out to determine whether this technique can be implemented by game designers or community modders easily enough to improve the default generation of settlements in Minecraft. In this thesis, we explore the use of Minecraft as a platform for steganography, which is the practice of hiding a secret message within another, outwardly plain message. Specifically, we investigate how different Minecraft systems, such as textures, in-game user interfaces, and buildings, can be used as a cover for hiding secret messages. To demonstrate these techniques, we created a custom adventure map that showcases various methods for distributing secret information within Minecraft. In this thesis, I study the narratives and practices which maintain Senegal’s temporary migration regime. This form of migration functions not as an individual endeavor, but rather as a family and community project which provides its participants—migrants and others—with cultural capital and prestige. I consider how the cultural imaginary of Senegalese male migration encourages young men to migrate in search of masculine social adulthood. I ultimately examine the habitus of temporary Senegalese male migrants in order to understand how their migration projects are oriented towards return to Senegal.

The scholarly literature shows that jinn are important in the analysis of the formation of Islam in Muslim diasporas in the West. Jinn discourses in America reveal how American Muslims negotiate their religious beliefs in relation to American conceptions of modernity and secularism, as well as highlights competing Islamic epistemologies that result from these negotiations. Imams emphasize the Qur’an and the Sunnah as the only sources of legitimate knowledge, while lay American Muslims and scholars of Islam see personal experience as a way to approach Islam.

Archival Search For X-Ray Emission From Type Ib/C Supernovae, Michael Dixon

We present results from an ongoing archival search for X-ray emission from all known Type Ib/c supernovae using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory. For each supernova, we search all possible observations to find those with coverage in X-rays. For those observations with coverage of a supernova, we extract an X-ray spectrum at the location of the supernova and create response files. We model those spectra with an absorbed hot plasma model in order to determine luminosities or set upper limits. These results are then used to determine or set limits on the mass-loss history of the pre-supernova stars, thus …

Experiencing everyday discrimination can have a significant negative impact on an individual’s wellbeing. While much attention has been paid to the physical and mental health consequences of discrimination, less is known about how discrimination can affect cognitive health, and most existing work has been conducted in laboratory settings where participants recall discrimination retrospectively. Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The current study aims to better understand influences on men within the UK Christian community on their engagement with pornography and prostitution. The authors utilized the Carnes (2012) survey to examine the landscape of sexual knowledge and behaviours, and to identify symptoms, and the propensity towards, “out-of-control sexual behavior” among participants. Data from a survey sent to the Christian community through church networks and word of mouth was used for this study. Of the 491 men who participated, the majority (94%, 460) described their personal Christian faith as “strong.” Despite the Christian faith community's moral code of conduct, the survey …

Existing studies have shown that direct exposure to a real nature environment has a restorative effect on attentional resources after a mentally fatiguing task. However, it remains unclear whether virtual nature simulations can serve as a substitute for real nature experienced in the outdoors to restore executive attention. Given the mixed findings in the literature, the present study sought to examine if viewing videos with natural scenery (vs. a control with urban scenery) restores participants’ working memory capacity – measured by an operation span task – in a high-powered pre-registered within-subject experimental study. Objectives: Drawing on social identity theory, present research examined the effects of overlapping racial membership on monoracials’ categorization of biracials as in-/out-group members, as well as its impact on monoracials’ social perceptions of biracials in Singapore. Within Singapore, it is hypothesized that biracials who share racial membership with monoracials would be rated more as monoracials’ racial in-group and be evaluated more positively. Furthermore, monoracials’ positive perceptions of biracials with (vs. without) shared racial membership would be less influenced by biracials’ confrontation of racial prejudice.
