Musculoskeletal Injury Concealment In The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Joshua D. Wooldridge
Musculoskeletal Injury Concealment In The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Joshua D. Wooldridge
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
INTRODUCTION: Among service members, musculoskeletal injuries threaten military readiness and place a substantial burden on medical and financial resources. While musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are a leading threat to military readiness, service members’ unwillingness to seek care constrains current prevention and surveillance efforts. A growing body of evidence shows US service members conceal a large proportion of injuries, especially in training environments. The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps is a critical training environment for future US military commissioned officers. Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) is the largest commissioning source of new officers for the US military. ROTC cadets are college students concurrently …
An Adolescent Concussion Management Toolkit For Occupational Therapists, Coby Yoshimura
An Adolescent Concussion Management Toolkit For Occupational Therapists, Coby Yoshimura
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The aim of this project was to demonstrate the role occupational therapists may serve during concussion recovery, by integrating current research and findings into an instructional resource from an occupational therapy (OT) lens. An OT-based toolkit was created to prioritize the identification, assessment, and treatment of two realms of concussion management: functional cognition and vision. The development of a pre and post survey using a modified version of the Generalized Self-Efficacy (GSE) scale was used to determine occupational therapists’ perceived self-efficacy before and after reviewing the created OT-based toolkit. A related samples Wilcoxon signed rank-test was used to analyze pre …
Asian Culture In Western Music: Piano Music By Tan Dun And Bright Sheng, Guqi Zhang
Asian Culture In Western Music: Piano Music By Tan Dun And Bright Sheng, Guqi Zhang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Chinese-American composers Tan Dun and Bright Sheng present culturally eclectic writing styles in their contemporary compositions by leveraging Chinese folk elements, which have gained them an international reputation. This paper examines folk music elements in Tan Dun’s and Bright Sheng’s piano works and their methods of incorporating them. Two main sources provide my methodological models. Locating East Asia in Western Art Music, a collection of essays that compares Asian-influenced Western composers and Western-influenced Asian composers, combines music theory, musicology, and ethnomusicology to explore how composers construct and utilize Eastern and Western musical concepts. Le Kang’s 2009 “The Development of Chinese …
Analysis And Application Of Finite Element And High-Order Finite Difference Methods For Maxwell’S Equations In Complex Media, Li Zhu
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) technique is an effective tool introduced by B´erenger [13] to reduce the unbounded wave propagation problem to a bounded domain problem. This dissertation focuses on two different PML models and their applications to wave propagation problems with Maxwell’s equation in complex media. We investigate these models using two popular numerical methods: the Finite Difference Method (FDM) in Chapters 2 and 3, and the Finite Element Method (FEM) in Chapters 4 and 5.In Chapter 2, we focus on analyzing the stability of a PML developed by B’ecache et al. [10] for simulating wave propagation in the …
Fear Of Recurrence As A Mediator Of Illness Perception And Perceived Stress In Acute Myocardial Infarction Survivors, Sarah E. Zvonar
Fear Of Recurrence As A Mediator Of Illness Perception And Perceived Stress In Acute Myocardial Infarction Survivors, Sarah E. Zvonar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Purpose: The primary objective of this study is to evaluate fear of recurrence as a mediator of illness perception and perceived stress. This research will determine how illness perceptions and fear of recurrence affect perceived stress in the acute myocardial infarction (AMI) population. Other aims will observe how demographics predict patients who may experience increased fear of recurrence and stress in the AMI population, how the variables of fear of recurrence change over time, and if fear of recurrence is still a significant mediator after controlling for depression and anxiety.Rational/ Conceptual Basis/ Background: Acute myocardial infarctions (AMIs) are often accompanied …
Divergence-Conforming Velocity And Vorticity Approximations For Incompressible Fluids Obtained With Minimal Facet Coupling, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Lukas Kogler, Philip L. Lederer, Joachim Schöberl
Divergence-Conforming Velocity And Vorticity Approximations For Incompressible Fluids Obtained With Minimal Facet Coupling, Jay Gopalakrishnan, Lukas Kogler, Philip L. Lederer, Joachim Schöberl
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We introduce two new lowest order methods, a mixed method, and a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin method, for the approximation of incompressible flows. Both methods use divergence-conforming linear Brezzi–Douglas–Marini space for approximating the velocity and the lowest order Raviart–Thomas space for approximating the vorticity. Our methods are based on the physically correct viscous stress tensor of the fluid, involving the symmetric gradient of velocity (rather than the gradient), provide exactly divergence-free discrete velocity solutions, and optimal error estimates that are also pressure robust. We explain how the methods are constructed using the minimal number of coupling degrees of freedom per facet. …
Disruption Of Play Behavior Influences Development Of Caution In Juvenile Ground Squirrels, William Ryan
Disruption Of Play Behavior Influences Development Of Caution In Juvenile Ground Squirrels, William Ryan
Master's Theses
Play behavior is ubiquitous among young mammals and has a variety of important influences on early development. I evaluated possible influences of social play behavior on the development of temperament in juvenile Belding’s ground squirrels (Urocitellus beldingi), using the caution/boldness spectrum as a measure of temperament. I disrupted the play behavior of juvenile U. beldingi by walking toward juveniles at play until the play interactions stopped. I used undisrupted juveniles and juveniles whose non-play behavior was disrupted at regular intervals as controls. Caution was measured with behavioral tests during which a human intruder walked toward a squirrel and recorded the …

Damage to non–dicamba resistant (non-DR) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] has been frequent in geographies where dicamba-resistant (DR) soybean and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) have been grown and sprayed with the herbicide in recent years. Off-target movement field trials were conducted in northwest Arkansas to determine the relationship between dicamba concentration in the air and the extent of symptomology on non-DR soybean. Additionally, the frequency and concentration of dicamba in air samples at two locations in eastern Arkansas and environmental conditions that impacted the detection of the herbicide in air samples were evaluated. Treatment applications included dicamba at …
Diving Into The Deep: A Mystical-Contemplative Leap Of Hope From The Pew, Lori A. Stanley
Diving Into The Deep: A Mystical-Contemplative Leap Of Hope From The Pew, Lori A. Stanley
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This paper focuses on the intersection of the mystical and the contemplative by engaging The Collected Works of St. Teresa of Avila with Dr. Barbara A. Holmes’ Every Shut Eye Ain’t Sleep: The Inner Life During Slavery. The conversation reveals their perspectives on the role contemplative practices have in building and sustaining community. Contemplative prayer, like God, is no respecter of status or position and encounters souls where they are. The mystical-contemplative dimension of my paper is to see whether these two works in conversation would be able to address concerns I have about anti-black narratives in my present …
Saint Monica’S Model Of Catholic Excellence In Augustine’S Confessions, Caelan Mckamey
Saint Monica’S Model Of Catholic Excellence In Augustine’S Confessions, Caelan Mckamey
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This paper discusses Saint Augustine’s presentation of his mother, Monica, as a model Catholic throughout his Confessions. Saint Augustine utilized individuals he encountered throughout his life as models of perfect Catholicism in an effort to provide resources for his medieval contemporaries to draw from throughout their own faith journeys. As a convert himself, Augustine drew holy inspiration from his mother, Saint Monica, as he searched for life’s purpose and God’s grace. He presents his mother throughout the first nine books of the Confessions as a human woman – trapped in a loveless marriage, filled with anxiety and fear, yet …
Is It A Requisite For A ‘Believer’ To Be Part Of The Formal/Institutional Church?, Dillon Cook
Is It A Requisite For A ‘Believer’ To Be Part Of The Formal/Institutional Church?, Dillon Cook
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
For the purposes of this paper, I attempt to wrestle with the question of whether or not it is a requisite for a “believer” (which turns out to be a loaded and ambiguous term) to be a part of a formal/institutional Christian Church. This is a difficult task to accomplish, and this, I admit. There is no way to answer this, truly with certainty. But Metaphysics are rarely grounded in “certainty.” This is true for many Christian Theological tasks as well. Nevertheless, this argument will be attempted by working with and off of the Black liberation theologian and philosopher, James …
Lonergan’S Concept Of Conversion: A Path To Antiracism, Laura Boysen-Aragon
Lonergan’S Concept Of Conversion: A Path To Antiracism, Laura Boysen-Aragon
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
Racism is Christian America’s original sin. Our country’s foundation was built with the hands of more than ten million kidnapped and enslaved persons. The Catholic Church was complicit as enslavers and beneficiaries of enslaved labor as well as the marginalizing of Black Catholics. Given the limited attention that has been given to these origin stories in our country and our church, it is unsurprising that systems of racism perpetuate today. Catholic theologian and ethicist Bryan Massingale provides a definition of racism as an ethos that lives on in U.S. society. Since the murder of George Floyd, a heightened awareness of …
“Redeeming The Religion” Of The Colonizer: Exploring Filipino Worship In The U.S., Gabrielle Poma
“Redeeming The Religion” Of The Colonizer: Exploring Filipino Worship In The U.S., Gabrielle Poma
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
This paper aims to serve as an introduction to what the author considers a staple but often overlooked demographic in the pews of Catholic Churches in the United States: Filipinos and Filipino Americans. We begin with a brief overview of Filipino indigenous traditions, Spain’s colonization of the Philippines, and migration trends from the Philippines to the United States. We then explore how Filipino Catholics emerged from intimate devotional gatherings in households and hidden corners of their churches to assert their communities’ needs through parish leadership and civic engagement. In the public forum and thousands of miles from the Philippines, Filipinos …
Kenneth Tanaka And American Buddhism, Grace Laubach
Kenneth Tanaka And American Buddhism, Grace Laubach
Say Something Theological: The Student Journal of Theological Studies
In fairly recent history Buddhism has spread west to the United States. In doing so, it has faced many changes and transformations as people from different backgrounds have begun practicing and spreading its practices. In this process, many of the traditional aspects of Buddhism have been lost or traded for more modern ones, which has in turn led to the exclusion of many Buddhists of color from many primarily white, American Buddhist spaces. In analyzing the works of Kenneth Tanaka, the importance of utilizing both modern and traditional aspects of Buddhism within American Buddhism become clear as he discusses how …

Early Solid Diet Supplementation Influences The Proteomics Of Rumen Epithelium In Goat Kids, Yimin Zhuang, Xiaokang Lv, Kai Cui, Jianmin Chai, Naifeng Zhang
Animal Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
It is well known that solid diet supplementation in early life can significantly promote rumen development and metabolic function in young ruminants. However, the changes in the expressed proteome and related metabolism in rumen epithelium in response to a supplemented solid diet remain unclear. In this study, rumen epithelial tissue from goats in three diet regimes including milk replacer only (MRO), milk replacer supplemented concentrate (MRC), and milk replacer supplemented concentrate plus alfalfa pellets (MCA) were collected for measurement of the expression of epithelial proteins using proteomic technology (six per group). The results showed that solid diet significantly improved the …
An Intersectional Examination Of U.S. Civil Justice Problems, Kathryne M. Young, Katie R. Billings
An Intersectional Examination Of U.S. Civil Justice Problems, Kathryne M. Young, Katie R. Billings
Utah Law Review
Millions of Americans face civil justice problems each year, and most of these problems never make it to court, let alone to a legal expert. Although research has established that race and class are associated with a person’s chance of experiencing a civil justice problem, detailed intersectional examinations of everyday people’s justice experiences are largely absent. A more in-depth empirical understanding of the access to justice crisis can equip lawyers, policymakers, and other designers of justice interventions to create higher-impact, more efficient, and bettertargeted programs to meet the justice needs of everyday people.
This Article fills a critical gap in …
A New Test For The New Crime Exception, Colin Miller
A New Test For The New Crime Exception, Colin Miller
Utah Law Review
The new crime exception to the Fourth Amendment exclusionary rule allows prosecutors to introduce evidence connected to new crimes committed by defendants who were illegally detained and/or questioned. Unfortunately, as illustrated in this Article, courts largely have applied this new crime exception without any analytical framework or regard for the severity of the initial police misconduct or the defendant’s response. Moreover, courts have begun applying the new crime exception to crimes such as giving a fake name in response to an un-Mirandized interrogation following a lawful arrest.
By doing so, courts have allowed the new crime exception to swallow two …
Mass E-Carceration: Electronic Monitoring As A Bail Condition, Sara Zampierin
Mass E-Carceration: Electronic Monitoring As A Bail Condition, Sara Zampierin
Utah Law Review
Over the past decade, the immigration and criminal legal systems have increasingly relied on electronic monitoring as a bail condition; hundreds of thousands of people live under this monitoring on any given day. Decisionmakers purport to impose these conditions to release more individuals from detention and to maintain control over individuals they perceive to pose some risk of flight or to public safety. But the data do not show that electronic monitoring successfully mitigates these risks or that it leads to fewer individuals in detention. Electronic monitoring also comes with severe restrictions on individual liberty and leads to harmful effects …
25 Is The New 18: Extending Juvenile Jurisdiction And Closing Its Exceptions, Dylan Raymond
25 Is The New 18: Extending Juvenile Jurisdiction And Closing Its Exceptions, Dylan Raymond
Utah Law Review
Courts are in broad agreement that juveniles—defined as people under 18-yearsold — are less culpable than adults and thus punish them differently. Indeed, few would disagree that the adult criminal system should apply only to adults—people “fully developed and mature.” If separating adults and juveniles based on culpability is the goal, it begs a simple question: should the split happen at age 18? Some U.S. institutions imply that they believe an 18-year-old lacks the requisite maturity to assume certain responsibilities, including the House of Representatives and car rental agencies, which permit participation at 25. Looking globally, important institutions like the …
Preparing Homogenous Composites Of Collagen And Cellulose Nanocrystals For Tissue Engineering Research, Zachary Stanley
Preparing Homogenous Composites Of Collagen And Cellulose Nanocrystals For Tissue Engineering Research, Zachary Stanley
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Advancements in medicine and our understanding of stem cells have led to a greater emphasis on further developing research focused on tissue engineering. This research has led to the rise of both two-dimensional and three-dimensional scaffolds that can be utilized to repair bone, skin, vascular, and potentially even nervous tissue. One of the prominent compounds used in modern scaffolds is collagen-based hydrogels due to their low antigenicity and ability to provide structure to cells. There is potential to further improve upon this three-dimensional scaffold by incorporating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) into a composite hydrogel with collagen. The addition would increase the …
Analyzing Energy Use From Arkansas Public School Buildings, Oscar Morton
Analyzing Energy Use From Arkansas Public School Buildings, Oscar Morton
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Energy is a key global resource in society and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to the consumption of energy have detrimental effects on the planet. With energy consumption increasing, exponential population growth, and diminishing natural resources necessary for energy production, the relevance of energy efficiency is dramatically increasing. In this project, I analyzed energy usage data from a set of public school buildings from one school district in northwest Arkansas from 2018, before targeted energy efficiency practices were implemented, through 2022 to see if energy usage changed over this short period. The objectives of analyzing energy data were to determine …
Assessing Illegal Shooting Of Birds Along Power Lines, Eve C. Thomason
Assessing Illegal Shooting Of Birds Along Power Lines, Eve C. Thomason
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Birds found dead near power lines typically are assumed to have died from electrocution. However, birds die from many causes, and inaccurate diagnosis of cause of death undermines law enforcement, management, threat assessment, and mitigation. We used field and necropsy data from dead birds collected along 196 km of power lines in four western USA states in 2019 – 2022 to test the assumption that electrocution is the leading cause of death of birds on power lines. Of 175 birds with a known cause of death, 66% died from gunshot, whereas only 17% died from electrocution or by trauma. To …
Automating Pharmacokinetic Predictions In Artemisia, Celin Younan
Automating Pharmacokinetic Predictions In Artemisia, Celin Younan
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Pharmacokinetics (PK) is the time course of a compound in the body that is dependent on mechanisms of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion or ADME. A thorough understanding of PK is essential to predict the consequences of organisms exposed to chemicals. In medicine, predictions of PK of drugs allows us to properly prescribe drug treatments. In toxicology, PK allows us to predict the potential exposure of environmental contaminants and how they may affect organisms at the time of exposure or in the future. Chemical ecology could benefit from computational predictions of PK to better understand which plants are consumed or …
Analysis And Implementation Of A New High-Buck Dc-Dc Converter With Interleaved Output Inductors And Soft Switching Capability, Sajad Ghabeli Sani, Mohamad Reza Banaei, Seyed Hossein Hosseini
Analysis And Implementation Of A New High-Buck Dc-Dc Converter With Interleaved Output Inductors And Soft Switching Capability, Sajad Ghabeli Sani, Mohamad Reza Banaei, Seyed Hossein Hosseini
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper proposes an innovative structure for DC-DC converters with high buck gain by using a lower number of elements. The converter provides highly efficient output power and an extended output voltage range. In addition, the distribution of output current between two inductors and the soft-switching capability of the power switches have made the converter suitable for applications that require high output current. All power switches accomplish the ZVZCS (zero-voltage and zero-current switching) condition with the aid of a small auxiliary inductor (Lx), which charges and discharges parallel capacitors of main switches to provide soft-switching conditions. Thus, the switching losses …

An Efficient Deep Learning Architecture For Turkish Lira Recognition And Counterfeit Detection, Burak İyi̇kesi̇ci̇, Ergun Erçelebi̇
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Banknote counterfeiting is a common practice worldwide. Due to the recent developments in technology, banknote imitation has become easier than before. There are different kinds of algorithms developed for the detection of counterfeit banknotes for different countries in the literature. The earlier algorithms utilized classical image processing techniques where the implementations of machine learning and deep learning algorithms appeared with the developments in the artificial intelligence field as well as the computer hardware. In this study, a novel convolutional neural networks-based deep learning algorithm has been developed that detects counterfeit Turkish Lira banknotes and their denominations using the banknote images …
Understanding The Operations And Decision-Making Of Cow-Calf Farmers In Northwest Arkansas, Clayton Weyl
Understanding The Operations And Decision-Making Of Cow-Calf Farmers In Northwest Arkansas, Clayton Weyl
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses
Societal pressure on farmers has become a more central part of the rhetoric surrounding livestock production. This study includes farmers in the discourse on the rhetoric surrounding climate change via interviews and simulations tailored to their operation. Previous research has addressed regenerative agricultural practices and conditions that influence farmer decision-making, but little research has analyzed decision-making in tandem with environmental practices. The literature reveals that cow-calf producer decision-making is influenced by their reliance on cattle as an income source, and farmers overall choose climate-friendly practices based on their perceptions about climate change. The goal of this research was to gather …
Foreign Ownership Of Agricultural Land In The United States: A Case Study Concerning The 2023 Grassroots Policy And Legislative Landscape, Mary Eichenberger
Foreign Ownership Of Agricultural Land In The United States: A Case Study Concerning The 2023 Grassroots Policy And Legislative Landscape, Mary Eichenberger
Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Honors Theses
Historically, foreign ownership of land in the United States has existed for centuries. Many state laws expressly allow for foreign ownership of agricultural land in their state. However, this study will find that a push to amend these laws has begun in recent years in state and federal legislatures. Grassroots member-focused agricultural organizations, representative of the agricultural community, have also seen a shift in member-developed policy. This shift is toward an attitude of concern and increased oversight of foreign land investment. From the data gathered, it can be inferred that public awareness in the agricultural community is increasing concerning foreign …
Closed-Loop, Recyclable Plastics From Ethyl Cyanoacrylate, Allison Joy Christy
Closed-Loop, Recyclable Plastics From Ethyl Cyanoacrylate, Allison Joy Christy
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Ethyl cyanoacrylate, commonly known as super glue, has held a prominent role as an adhesive for decades due to its propensity to rapidly polymerize into poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) (PECA) under ambient conditions. Ethyl cyanoacrylate monomers and their resulting PECA polymers are bio-friendly, which has allowed them to be used as medical adhesives and to be applied to drug delivery systems. However, PECA has not been used as a plastic material due to the perceived difficulty of handling the ethyl cyanoacrylate monomer. Here, we present a novel PECA plastic that displays thermal stability and tensile strength values that are comparable to atactic …

Determining The Effect Of Absorbents And Soybean Systems On Pfas Precursor Transformation, Tamia Wellington
Biological Sciences
PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) refers to a class of chemicals that consist of long-chains of carbon bonded to fluorine. These are chemicals that have many industrial uses, from cosmetics to industrial fire-fighting foam. Since PFAS is so widely used and available, it has become increasingly present in water and soil, resulting in its uptake and bioaccumulation in plants. This study focused on the impacts of powdered activated carbon (PAC) and montmorillonite on the PFOS precursor N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido acetic acid (N-EtFOSAA), in soil, and in plants grown in that soil. This study focused on spiking soil with PFAS chemicals, …
Quantification Of Fibrosis And Infiltrates In The Salivary Gland, Nikhita Kumar
Quantification Of Fibrosis And Infiltrates In The Salivary Gland, Nikhita Kumar
Biological Sciences
Fibrosis is characterized by the excessive buildup of extracellular matrix components (ECM) in tissues and organs in response to injury, chronic inflammation, auto immune disorders, and genetic alterations. Non-obese diabetic mice (NOD) are a model for Sjögren’s Syndrome. We hypothesize that NOD mice, which start to develop Sjögren’s-like disease at approximately 12 weeks of age are suffering from hyposalivation at least in part due to fibrosis of the submandibular salivary glands (SMGs). Fibrosis refers to the over-production of extracellular matrix proteins in the connective tissue compartment. To test this hypothesis 16-week-old mice were treated with either the fibrosis inhibitor Nintedanib …
