Adolescent Acceptability Of Mental Health Interventions: A Systematic Review, Norah Bufford May 2023

Adolescent Acceptability Of Mental Health Interventions: A Systematic Review, Norah Bufford

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many children and adolescents experience a mental health problem, and of those that do, a significant percentage will only receive interventions in the schools. One important part of intervention research is measuring stakeholder acceptability. Research demonstrates that collecting data on student acceptability for mental health interventions in schools helps to understand student satisfaction, level of understanding, and if they would recommend the interventions to peers. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to determine measures used in assessing student acceptability when receiving mental health interventions in schools. Results suggest that most studies that …

Hand-Written Versus Typed Student Responses: A Study On We-Cbm & Alternate-Form Reliability, Joseph Mulaski May 2023

Hand-Written Versus Typed Student Responses: A Study On We-Cbm & Alternate-Form Reliability, Joseph Mulaski

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Writing is an important skill for school, work, and life. However, many students fail to demonstrate proficiency in writing by the time they graduate high school. While schools have some systems in place to identify struggling writers, many fail to use written-expression curriculum-based measures because they are not viewed as user friendly. Many state writing assessments are now typed on computers. This project examined the utility of typed WE-CBM by finding the alternate form reliability for two administration forms of WE-CBM (hand-written and typed). Results suggest that reliability is variable across time, grade, and WE-CBM score type, and very few …

A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Nonprobability Sampling & Post Hoc Corrections, Julia Hong May 2023

A Monte Carlo Analysis Of Nonprobability Sampling & Post Hoc Corrections, Julia Hong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Nonprobability samples are often used in place of probability samples because the former are less trouble and less expensive. Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine how well a sample represents population parameters when using nonprobability samples. Researchers attempt to mitigate the disadvantages of nonprobability sampling by performing post hoc corrections, but this adjustment may not successfully undo the effects of nonprobability sampling. To examine these effects, a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to create a pseudo-population from which samples were drawn. Forty-one conditions were replicated 10,000 times each, with each sample consisting of 100 observations. A post-stratification adjustment was made …

School Climate Research In Elementary Schools: A Systematic Review, Jessica Lafleur May 2023

School Climate Research In Elementary Schools: A Systematic Review, Jessica Lafleur

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Research demonstrates that schools that cultivate a positive school climate see growth in student’s academic performance and improvements in behavior. However, a majority of the research focuses on either solely middle and high school or a district-wide view of school climate including K-12. There is a lack of research dedicated to school climate of elementary schools. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature surrounding school climate in elementary schools. A systematic search of the literature yielded thirteen studies that focused on the elementary setting. Most studies examined the teaching and learning or institutional …

A United, Not A Divider: Community, Identity, Performance & The Tomato Krewe Parading Group Of East Nashville's Tomato Art Festival, Allison Cate

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis is an ethnographic study of the “Tomato Krewe,” a social group that participates in the parade of East Nashville’s annual Tomato Art Festival. Drawing on participant-observation, interviews, and my own experiences as a member of the krewe and resident of East Nashville, I examine krewe members’ narratives about the festival, the material culture that they create for the parade, and the levels of performance that they engage in while parading. Central to my analysis is how krewe members understand the Tomato Art Festival as an expression of East Nashville identity.

Development & Validation Of A Scale Of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Alexander Davy May 2023

Development & Validation Of A Scale Of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Alexander Davy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are important to organizations and their employees. However, confusion in conceptualization and operationalization hinders the development of DEI research and application. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, I conceptualized DEI as a composite construct of three interrelated but differentiated components, that is, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Possible relationships among the three constructs were discussed. Second, I developed a three-dimensional scale to measure diversity, equity, and inclusion as separate constructs. The scale showed acceptable reliability, with Cronbach’s alpha levels for the overall scale and subscales range from .81 to .94. Convergent and divergent validity …

The Peter Principle In Nfl Coaching Hires: An Analysis Of Success Of Nfl Head Coaching Hiring Based On Experience, Sam Malone-Povolny

Master of Science in Kinesiology

The NFL is a massive professional sports organization with worldwide impact for its players and coaches. NFL head coaches come from all walks of life but end up falling into two categories once hired: Either a former head coach is hired to helm a new team or a rising assistant coach is brought in to inject some new ideas. Whichever category they fall into, the team members become a reflection of the coach’s ideas and values. And, how well the team does in terms of on-field success is often the main dictation of the coach’s future with the franchise. Using …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 26: Confessions Of A 'Wallace Enthusiast', Charles H. Smith May 2023

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 26: Confessions Of A 'Wallace Enthusiast', Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

The author’s longstanding interest in the life and thought of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) is profiled in three ways, through: (1) a brief factual review of its history (2) a discussion of some problems with the way Wallace has been treated over the years, and (3) a consideration of the author’s personal experience with the paranormal, and how this has made him, if not always a full believer, more patient with divergent explanations of the type Wallace was famous for.

All Dissertations

The work presented herein provides quantitative data related to bacteria exposed in situ to two radionuclides relevant to nuclear sensing: plutonium-239 (239Pu) and iron-55 (55Fe). Originally motivated by the fundamental science underlying biosensing, liquid cultures of Pseudomonas putida and Escherichia coli were exposed to radionuclides over the course of 15-day experimental periods with the intent of gaining insight into the response of these bacteria. An essential component of characterizing or utilizing this response in a meaningful way is an understanding of the dose leading to that response. This dissertation narrows the knowledge gap associated with dose-response …

The Questionable Death Of Jim Crow: How Systemic Racism Impacts Voting Accessibility By Ways Of Wait Times, Icarus Laduke-Lott May 2023

The Questionable Death Of Jim Crow: How Systemic Racism Impacts Voting Accessibility By Ways Of Wait Times, Icarus Laduke-Lott

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Racial identity and perception thereof are consistent themes throughout the history of the United States. Countless studies have attempted to measure the impact of this factor on everyday life, with present research finding the lives of non-white individuals to be needlessly burdened due to systemic and individual prejudice. But how does this extend to the realm of political accessibility? And if the impact is great, can we truly claim that the era of Jim Crow is over? To address this question, I utilized the data collected by the Cooperative Election Study in 2020, working to emphasize the impact of systemic …

Self-Consistent Effects Of The Recirculating Plasmapshere On The Development Of Storm Time Dynamics In The Inner Magnetosphere., Christian-Andrew Bagby-Wright May 2023

Self-Consistent Effects Of The Recirculating Plasmapshere On The Development Of Storm Time Dynamics In The Inner Magnetosphere., Christian-Andrew Bagby-Wright

Physics Dissertations - Archive

The near Earth space environment is a highly coupled system. The Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) interacts with the magnetosphere in myriad ways depend on the orientation of the IMF to the magnetosphere. The magnetic fields of the magnetosphere and the IMF trap plasma and carry the plasma with it as both magnetic fields evolve over time. This plasma can in turn interact with other plasmas, carried by other field lines, affecting the dynamics of the other population and the magnetic field lines of both populations. The nature, frequency, and importance of interactions between different plasma, or magnetic fields, varies greatly …

Great Expectations: Anticipating A Reminder Influences Prospective Memory Encoding And Unaided Retrieval, Philip Peper May 2023

Great Expectations: Anticipating A Reminder Influences Prospective Memory Encoding And Unaided Retrieval, Philip Peper

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Reminders are effective ways to improve prospective memory (PM) – our ability to remember to complete a future action – but reminder use may have unintended consequences. Recent work in retrospective memory has shown that expecting a reminder reduces unaided memory retrieval by reducing encoding effort (i.e., encoding effort hypothesis). However, previous research in PM varies as to whether encoding effort influences PM retrieval. We measured study duration (Experiment 1) and pupil size (Experiment 2), and manipulated depth of processing (Experiment 3) at encoding to examine whether encoding effort influences PM retrieval (i.e., encoding effort hypothesis). Across all experiments, we …

Self-Compassion And Online Student Connectedness As Protective Factors Against Stress And Loneliness In Emerging Adulthood, Abigail Caroline Heller May 2023

Self-Compassion And Online Student Connectedness As Protective Factors Against Stress And Loneliness In Emerging Adulthood, Abigail Caroline Heller

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The current state of US youth and emerging adult mental health is described as a crisis that the COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated (US Office of the Surgeon General, 2021). This dissertation examined whether daily hassles and COVID-19 pandemic-related stress were related to negative psychological and physical health outcomes in emerging adulthood. Additionally, the current study aimed to examine loneliness as a mediator of the relationship between stressors and physical and psychological outcomes in adolescents. More importantly, this study examined the protective roles of self-compassion (i.e., how emerging adults treat themselves during hard times; Neff, 2003) and online student connectedness …

The Influence Of Organizational Tightness-Looseness, Self-Monitoring, And Performance Standards On Creativity, Sampoorna Nandi May 2023

The Influence Of Organizational Tightness-Looseness, Self-Monitoring, And Performance Standards On Creativity, Sampoorna Nandi

Psychology Theses - Archive

My research study seeks to experimentally investigate the main effect of cultural tightness-looseness within organizations on employees’ creative performance in terms of the criteria of the specific creative process (idea generation versus evaluation). Specifically, I hypothesized that employees in tight (versus loose) organizational cultures will be better at generating more useful (versus original) ideas. Furthermore, employees in tight (versus loose) organizational cultures were hypothesized to be stronger at idea evaluation (marked by number, depth, specificity, and usefulness) and employees in loose (versus tight) organizational cultures are expected to be stronger at idea generation (marked by fluency, originality, and quality). Furthermore, …

Seeing The Signs: An Analysis Of Early Onset Of Violence And Desistance Amongst Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tailar Brown May 2023

Seeing The Signs: An Analysis Of Early Onset Of Violence And Desistance Amongst Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tailar Brown

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

There has been increasing literature on juvenile delinquency and the factors that influence deviant behavior among adolescents. However, there has been little exploration of the effects of early displays of violent behavior on desistance for those identified as serious juvenile offenders (SJOs). In order to create effective intervention programs and lower recidivism rates among this population, it is essential to comprehend the effects of early instances of violent behavior on SJOs' desistance. Using longitudinal data from the Pathways to Desistance Study, this project explored the connection between early displays of violent behavior (i.e., fights at school, violence against siblings, planning …

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Cognition is the mental process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience and senses. Based on Embodied Cognition theory, physical activities are an important manifestation of cognitive functions. As a result, they can be employed to both assess and train cognitive skills. In order to assess various cognitive measures, the ATEC system has been proposed. It consists of physical exercises with different variations and difficulty levels, designed to provide assessment of executive and motor functions. This thesis focuses on obtaining human activity representation from recorded videos of ATEC tasks in order to automatically assess embodied cognition performance. Representation learning …

Sympathetic Control Of Blood Pressure In Young Non-Hispanic Black Women, Brandi Stephens May 2023

Sympathetic Control Of Blood Pressure In Young Non-Hispanic Black Women, Brandi Stephens

Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive

Non-Hispanic Black women in the United States have a greater prevalence of hypertension compared to non-Hispanic White women, which contributes to a parallel rise in excessive cardiovascular disease burden. Although women of other race/ethnic groups have a lower prevalence of cardiovascular disease compared to their respective male counterparts, Black women have a similar or greater prevalence to Black men, and early cardiovascular disease markers can manifest even in young adulthood. Heightened sympathetic nervous system reactivity and its transduction to blood pressure (i.e., sympathetic vascular transduction) have been proposed as potential mediators of elevated hypertension risk. In addition, it has been …

A Glimpse Into The Climate, Seasonality, Hydrological Cycle, Carbonate Chemistry And Marine Ecosystem Shift Of The Pre-Petm And The Petm Using Ncar Cesm1.2, Jiayi Wang

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ~56 my ago, 170,000y event) is characterized by a negative δ13C excursion into the atmosphere. This event caused global temperature to increase by about 5-6 °C, followed by climate responses such as marine acidification, ocean stratification, shoaling of calcite compensation depth (CCD), stronger hydrological cycle, and significant changes in marine ecosystems. It is one of the very few analogies of today’s global warming climate and thus is valuable to study. It still holds much potential for research, including using the state-of-the-art model CESM1.2. Proxy records are limited due to the nature of geological preservation and …

An Investigation Of Peak Shape Models In Chiral Separations, Ryan Jacob Burk May 2023

An Investigation Of Peak Shape Models In Chiral Separations, Ryan Jacob Burk

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

The use of superficially porous particles in chromatography has led to significant improvements in separation efficiency. However, peak asymmetry in enantiomeric separations causes performance comparisons across particle types a challenge. In this study, we screened 28 pharmaceutically relevant compounds and developed practical methods to reduce peak asymmetry in normal phase chiral chromatography. The use of additives was found to be effective in reducing peak tailing for all compounds, including neutrals. Additionally, we observed that solvent mismatch with the eluent can cause system peak interference, which can be managed by reducing injection volumes. To more accurately assess the performance of the …

Leveraging Population Genomics Across Two Taxonomically Diverse Non-Model Systems To Understand Patterns Of Disease Transmission And Consequences Of Hybridization, Zachary Lamar Nikolakis May 2023

Leveraging Population Genomics Across Two Taxonomically Diverse Non-Model Systems To Understand Patterns Of Disease Transmission And Consequences Of Hybridization, Zachary Lamar Nikolakis

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The field of population genomics has been mainly applied to questions centered around understanding molecular variation, impacts of evolutionary processes, and the history of populations. Here I leverage population genomic techniques across two different systems to understand patterns of disease transmission across heavily monitored and controlled parasite populations and consequences of hybridization between divergent rattlesnake lineages. I employed multiple genome sequencing techniques with new methods to infer close-order relatedness from highly inbred human blood fluke populations in order to understand transmission pathways across a region experiencing a resurgence in disease. I then use a comparative population genomic approach by sampling …
