Uterine Artery Embolization In A Patient With Large Uterine Fibroids, Safura Sattar, David Naimzadeh, Bita C. Behaeddin, Ilya Fonarov, Damian Casadesus
Internal Medicine Articles
A woman in her 20s with no past medical history presented to the emergency department with a 4-day history of abdominal pain. Imaging revealed several large uterine fibroids that compressed various intra-abdominal structures. Options of observation, medical management, surgical management with abdominal myomectomy, and uterine artery embolization (UAE) were discussed. The patient was counseled about the associated risks of UAE and myomectomy. Since both procedures have a risk of infertility, the patient elected to proceed with uterine artery embolization due to the less invasive nature of the procedure. She was discharged after one day in the hospital following the procedure …
Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz
Peer Review Validation: Tracking Scholarly Activity In A Repository, Amanda Schwartz
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Providence’s institutional repository Digital Commons launched in 2018, serving as the enterprise’s scholarly activity repository. After several years of successful repository usage and readership tracking, research administration initiated a new request: peer review tracking. The repository previously tracked number of article submissions but did not assess if content was published in peer reviewed journals. How can we retroactively and proactively track peer reviewed articles on our institutional repository? Simple ask, complicated answer.
Library staff had no previous practices in place to record whether content was peer reviewed or not. The initial request seemed simple, yetbecame increasingly complex to create both …

Despite interest in the contribution of evapotranspiration (ET) of residential turfgrass lawns to household and municipal water budgets across the United States, the spatial and temporal variability of residential lawn ET across large scales is highly uncertain. We measured instantaneous ET (ETinst) of lawns in 79 residential yards in six metropolitan areas: Baltimore, Boston, Miami, Minneapolis-St. Paul (mesic climates), Los Angeles and Phoenix (arid climates). Each yard had one of four landscape types and management practices: traditional lawn-dominated yards with high or low fertilizer input, yards with water-conserving features, and yards with wildlife-friendly features. We measured ETinst …

Examining Differences In Adult Attachment Across Varying Family Dynamics, Hannah Miller
Examining Differences In Adult Attachment Across Varying Family Dynamics, Hannah Miller
School of Social Work Undergraduate Honors Theses
Recent research suggests that attachment in adulthood impacts many aspects of an individual’s life, including experiences with romantic partners, emotional regulation, and overall life satisfaction. Research attributes this to the levels of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance individuals experience due to relationship experiences with their caregivers in childhood. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between specific family dynamics and the presence of attachment anxiety and avoidance in adulthood. The present study recruited 185 adults to participate in an anonymous survey about the family dynamics they experienced in childhood, including the relationship between their parents or guardians …

A Scoping Review Of The Impact Of Solitary Confinement On Self-Harm And Suicide Among Adults In U.S. Prisons, Jessica Diana Puebla
A Scoping Review Of The Impact Of Solitary Confinement On Self-Harm And Suicide Among Adults In U.S. Prisons, Jessica Diana Puebla
Social Work Theses - Archive
Solitary confinement is a widespread issue that impacts the most vulnerable individuals in our country. The U.S. uses solitary confinement more frequently and for longer periods of time compared to other countries though its use has not proven to be an effective intervention in prisons. Solitary confinement limits the individual’s ability to connect with peers, friends, and family as visits are restricted, thus impacting their mental health. This thesis aimed to understand the impact of solitary confinement of self-harm and suicide among adults in U.S. prisons; This thesis also attempted to shed light on the theoretical lenses that were stated …
Young Adult Well-Being After Childhood Maltreatment Experiences, Katherine Fahrenthold
Young Adult Well-Being After Childhood Maltreatment Experiences, Katherine Fahrenthold
Social Work Theses - Archive
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s), attachment style, and well-being in transition-age youth. The study sought to address two questions; is the attachment style of young adults who have experienced maltreatment associated with well-being and overall adjustment in the transition to adulthood? What is the lived experience of young adults who have experienced child maltreatment as they transition to adulthood? An online survey containing questions about demographics, 3 validated measures (the ACE questionnaire, Revised Adult Attachment Scale, and the Mental Health Continuum Short Form), and expanded ACE item questions was administered …

How They See Me: Reentry Experiences Of Women With Mental Illnesses: An Interpretative Phenomenological Approach, Mansi N. Patel
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
The reintegration of justice-involved people into the community has emerged as a key concern of the criminal justice system as prison populations have increased globally. High recidivism rates indicate that prisons have not adequately prepared many prisoners for life after prisons. Over one million women are released from US jails and prisons each year and reintegrate into society (National Institute of Justice, 2022). These women will reintegrate into society with disproportionately high rates of mental health issues and women who leave jails and prisons with mental health issues face increased risks of experiencing substance use, risky behaviors, homelessness, and recidivism …
Ethnic Group Political Efficacy: Scale Development And Latino Political Participation, Norma Elizabeth Garza Reyes
Ethnic Group Political Efficacy: Scale Development And Latino Political Participation, Norma Elizabeth Garza Reyes
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Latinos have grown to be the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. since the 2000 U.S. Census count but have historically voted at lower numbers compared to White Americans. Two studies examined a new construct, ethnic group political efficacy (GPE), to understand better marginalized groups voting participation. Study 1 developed a group political efficacy scale (GPE). Using exploratory factor and item response theory analysis, results revealed that the scale has three factors: internal, external, and power GPE. More importantly, minorities’ voting intent was partially explained by ethnic GPE. Next, a focal second short-term longitudinal study with an online national …
A Study In The Freeness Of Finitely Generated Anp-Modules Upon Restriction To Principal Subalgebras, Luke Manford Flattery
A Study In The Freeness Of Finitely Generated Anp-Modules Upon Restriction To Principal Subalgebras, Luke Manford Flattery
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
We are interested in quantitative information on the freeness of modules over a truncated polynomial ring when restricting to subalgebras generated by a linear form. After investigating the structure of the truncated polynomial ring, subalgebras generated by a linear form, and corresponding vector spaces, we construct a generic representation and discuss its connection to a certain affine space. We quantify the abundance of freeness of modules using a certain variety called the rank variety. For any possible dimension we construct a module whose rank variety has that dimension. Finally, we define another variety, called the module variety, and show that …
Mechanism Of Hairpin Vortex Formation By Liutex, Yifei Yu
Mechanism Of Hairpin Vortex Formation By Liutex, Yifei Yu
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Turbulence is still a mystery for human after more than one century’s development of fluid dynamics. Hairpin vortex formation is regarded as an essential process for a laminar flow transition to the turbulent flow. A new correct third generation vortex identification method, Liutex, was proposed in 2018, which can represent local rotation direction and reveal the local angular speed correctly. Using this powerful tool, the mechanism of hairpin vortex formation is re-examined. This dissertation (1) explains the mechanism of hairpin vortex formation by solving Orr-Sommerfeld equation using Chebyshev spectrum method (2) observes the DNS result of flat plate boundary layer …
Likelihood Inference For Flexible Cure Models With Interval Censored Data, Jodi Treszoks
Likelihood Inference For Flexible Cure Models With Interval Censored Data, Jodi Treszoks
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Models for survival data with a surviving fraction, known as cure rate models, play a vital role in survival analysis. Due to the improvement of intervening methodologies, some subjects are seen to be immune permanently. While cure rate models have been studied extensively in the recent literature with a standard assumption of right-censored data, in many applied settings, such as recidivism studies or medical studies where the event of interest is not immediately harmful, continuous observation of a subject is impracticable. We call lifetime data generated with discrete follow-up times as interval-censored. In this thesis, we extend several existing cure …

Student Projects
The works in this series explore and question gender roles and stereotypes within work and domestic environments. Throughout history, men have been the breadwinners who come home to a fully cooked meal made by a woman. But today, everyone has career goals no matter their gender identity. Women have worked hard to break down barriers put up in male-dominated work environments, such as in the sports industry. Similarly, men are now able to explore hobbies and careers that had a feminine label in the past, such as taking care of the housework and cooking.
Although we’ve made great progress as …

Pharmacokinetics Of Cbd Supplementation In Horses: Single Dose Vs. Long-Term Feeding, Madilyn Adamchik
Pharmacokinetics Of Cbd Supplementation In Horses: Single Dose Vs. Long-Term Feeding, Madilyn Adamchik
Honors College Theses
Research about supplemental feeding of cannabidiol (CBD) to horses is still in its early stages, but many horse owners are feeding CBD supplements for supposed benefits, including behavior and pain management. Cannabinoids work through the endocannabinoid system to modulate nervous and hormonal actions in the body, working to maintain a healthy homeostatic balance. Safety and efficacy have been tested for dosages of up to 500 mg of CBD per day for horses, but further research about the pharmacokinetics based on dosage amount and form of CBD are still needed. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of …

Prophets Of The Divine Revolution: "Bad Bishop Brown," Harry F. Ward, Claude C. Williams, And The Applied Proletarian Gospel, David W. Adams
Honors College Theses
This paper seeks to propose a unique strand of religious thought which united Marxist Christians in the United States. Using the lives and work of Bishop William Montgomery Brown, Dr. Harry F. Ward, and Reverend Claude C. Williams, this work proposes the term “applied proletarian gospel” to denote the political and religious thought of Marxist Christians who surpassed the social gospel and other proposed ideas of radical Christianity in their revolutionary and anti-capitalist thought and action. This paper finds that, although it remained a small trend among Christians, the applied proletarian gospel gave an outlet to Christians who sought to …

Faculty In Education: Perception Of Control And Alternative Disciplinary Methods, Samantha Freville
Honors College Theses
Schools have the unique and important opportunity to teach students useful life and coping skills as well as positive behavior in their community. One way in which they may impact their students is through their choice of disciplinary methods. Research suggests that alternative disciplinary methods may be more beneficial to students than are traditional exclusionary policies. For part one of this study, undergraduate students reported their experiences with traditional and alternative discipline in elementary, middle, and high school as well as their engagement in school (school involvement and attitudes of school faculty). Results showed that having alternative methods at a …

Tissue engineering can be defined as processes that aim to generate three-dimensional functional tissues in vitrothat have been favorably altered according to the structural, biochemical, electrophysiological, and biomechanical properties of the desired tissue before implantation into the human body. In relation to cardiac tissues, these properties would include the ability to conduct action potentials, withstand systolic pressure, permit sufficient O2 and CO2penetration, sufficient vascularization to supply nutrients for cellular activity, surface topology that enables cellular communication, and more. As heart diseases and instances of myocardial infarction continue to rise worldwide, there is an increasing need for …
The Role Of Conditional Cash Transfer Programs In Improving Access To Professional Attendance At Birth In Indonesia, Kaitlin Murray
The Role Of Conditional Cash Transfer Programs In Improving Access To Professional Attendance At Birth In Indonesia, Kaitlin Murray
Economics Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper examines the impact of an Indonesian conditional cash transfer program, named Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH), on households’ use of institutional delivery facilities at childbirth. Difference-in-differences and fixed effects regressions were conducted to examine the relationship between receipt of PKH cash transfers, use of institutional delivery facilities, and accessibility to institutional and traditional delivery facilities. The accessibility to institutional and traditional delivery facilities was demonstrated through a longer one-way trip time to these facilities. This paper had three significant findings: (1) that receipt of PKH cash transfers reduced the use of institutional delivery facilities, (2) that receipt of PKH …
Urban & Deltaic Subsidence In Bangladesh From Sentinel-1 Insar Data Analysis, Gavin Middleton
Urban & Deltaic Subsidence In Bangladesh From Sentinel-1 Insar Data Analysis, Gavin Middleton
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Bangladesh's Bengal Delta faces multiple challenges, such as rising sea levels, coastal flooding, and high population density, leading to land subsidence, saltwater intrusion, and biodiversity loss. The region's groundwater security, essential for the country's survival, is at risk due to climate change and saltwater intrusion. Groundwater security is dependent on the Bengal Water Machine (BWM), which is at risk due to saltwater intrusion and monsoon rainfall distribution from climate change. Groundwater exhaustion leads to natural hazards such as subsidence, landslides, and flooding. A large portion of the population is at risk from groundwater insecurity, which requires mitigating worldwide greenhouse gas …
Minority Stress Through Time: Sexual Minority Stress & Suicidality Across Generations, Jenessa Canen
Minority Stress Through Time: Sexual Minority Stress & Suicidality Across Generations, Jenessa Canen
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research suggests that sexual minority populations are at a much higher risk for suicide than their heterosexual peers. The primary explanation for this disparity is minority stress theory. The theory of minority stress proposes that in addition to everyday stressors experienced by most people, sexual minorities experience additional unique stressors related to their sexual minority identity. Since minority stress theory was proposed in 2003, much has changed about how the United States understands and views sexual minorities. Theoretically, this should impact the way minority stress is being experienced, which may be seen by examining minority stress across sexual minorities of …
