Field Notes Of An Rpcv: Reflecting On Development And Adolescence, Marissa Kelly

Sustainability and Social Justice

They say the Peace Corps is the toughest job you’ll ever love. In July of 2017, I began my service as a Peace Corps Youth Development Volunteer in Costa Rica. Nearly six years later, as I prepare to graduate with my master’s degree in International Development at Clark University, I reflect upon those Peace Corps years of service and the many lessons learned while living in community, implementing youth projects, and, specifically, working with adolescent girls. My interest in studying international development and, particularly, deepening my knowledge of gender and development is directly connected to the Peace Corps. Therefore, …

Disturbance Regimes And Management Strategies Of Mountain Ash Forest Ecosystems In Victoria, Australia; A Literature Review, Zoe Plumb

Sustainability and Social Justice

This paper discusses the ecology of mountain ash forests, the disturbances regimes that currently exist in these ecosystems, and finally addresses the current management practices and future management practices. Mountain ash forests are subjected to a wide range of research in the Central Highlands of Victoria, an area approximately 14,000 hectares in range. These forests are dominated by montane ash trees (Eucalyptus regnans F. Muell), which are critically endangered and at risk of collapse, attributed to the decline in large hollow-bearing trees throughout the region. Management of these forests are controlled by the Department of Environment, Land, Water, and …

An Investigation Of Resistance Training Behavior, Non-Specific Psychological Distress, And Perceived Barriers To Resistance Training In Self-Identifying Female Undergraduate Students, Jody Sobel May 2023

An Investigation Of Resistance Training Behavior, Non-Specific Psychological Distress, And Perceived Barriers To Resistance Training In Self-Identifying Female Undergraduate Students, Jody Sobel

Master's Theses

The prevalence and severity of depression symptoms amongst college students, specifically female identifying undergraduate students, is worrisome. There is a great deal of research that suggests a relationship between exercise, specifically resistance training (RT), and mental health. That said, current literature suggests that many female identifying students are not engaging due to perceived barriers. This, perhaps because of the plethora of barriers one can perceive. The purpose of this study was multifold 1) to examine the prevalence and severity of non-specific psychological distress; 2) to determine if there were differences between Kessler 6 Non-Specific Psychological Distress Scale (K6) categories (i.e., …

Religious Political Arguments, Accessibility, And Democratic Deliberation, Paul Billingham May 2023

Religious Political Arguments, Accessibility, And Democratic Deliberation, Paul Billingham

Notre Dame Law Review

Christian critics of liberalism, and especially of contemporary public-reason liberalism, often argue that it objectionably excludes religious voices form the public square, by requiring citizens to bracket their religious convictions when they engage in democratic deliberation. In response, liberals often deny that their views have this implication. Many public-reason liberal theorists are “inclusivists,” who permit religious contributions to deliberation.

Yet even inclusivists provide little reason to think that religious political arguments can be persuasive or fruitful. After all, they tend to see religious reasons as inaccessible to others, due to relying on beliefs, values, and methods of reasoning that others …

Predicting Attrition Among Human Anatomy And Physiology I Students In Community Colleges, Benjimen Sessums May 2023

Predicting Attrition Among Human Anatomy And Physiology I Students In Community Colleges, Benjimen Sessums

Dissertations

Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) courses are offered at almost every postsecondary educational institution in the United States enrolling over 450,000 students each year across the United States with an overall attrition rate between 30-40%. Approximately 150,000 of these students will not be successful the first time they attempt A&P. This constitutes one of the highest attrition rates of all undergraduate degree courses with this size of yearly enrollment.

A&P courses often serve as gateway course required for the continuation and completion of several biological degree fields. Many health-related professional programs such as nursing, paramedicine, and other allied health vocations require …

Evaluation Of A High-Speed Planter In Soybean Production, Péter Kovács, Shaun N. Casteel

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Timely and quality planting of soybean is important to achievemaximum yield potential. Wet spring soil conditions and rain frequently shorten the time for farmers to plant crops within optimal soil conditions. New planter technology has been introduced that enables farmers to plant their fields faster and more precisely than with traditional planters. Large plot field studies were conducted in Indiana from 2015 to 2017 to evaluate a high-speed planter at various planting speeds with multiple seeding rates on soybean. Seedling emergence, plant distribution, and final yield were evaluated. Three planting speeds [8, 12, and 16 kilometers per hour (kph)] and …

An Examination Of The Legal Responses By United States To Technological Advances In Organized Drug Smuggling, Abdulwahab Aldossary

University Honors Program

Recent advances in technology have aided terrorists in their ability to smuggle drugs in order to finance their operations. Drug trading routes have changed and so have methods of transportation and financial transaction. This study investigates the improved technology utilized by transnational organized crime groups and how the present laws and policies address the use of the improved technology for drug smuggling. The study will first look into the current models, such as the Counter-Terrorist Funding and Money Laundering model, and understand its weaknesses regarding drug smuggling within the United States. Moreover, the paper will focus on the current laws …

This study concurrently investigated the characteristics of 20 distance learning United States OSH M.S. programs and 101 OSH employment postings preferring or requiring candidates with an advanced degree. The goal was to determine if there was consensus in the required curricula and employer demands. Such agreement is one of the requirements for achieving occupational closure, an important step for OSH being considered a profession. The results demonstrated there is both diversity in OSH M.S. courses being offered and in knowledge, skills, and abilities being sought by employers. A Pareto comparison analysis illustrated that more OSH M.S. programs should …

Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023

Introduction

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) with KMT2A-rerrangement (KMT2A-r) in infants < 1 year is a high-risk childhood ALL subtype, with consistently poor event-free survival (EFS) of approximately 35% when treated with intensive chemotherapy with or without hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Infant ALL blasts are characterized by DNA hypermethylation, which is hypothesized to contribute to chemoresistance by altering transcriptional regulation of gene expression. In preclinical studies of KMT2A-r blasts, epigenetic priming with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors improved the in vitro cytotoxicity of chemotherapy. Azacitidine, a pyrimidine nucleoside analog of cytidine and hypomethylating agent, has been used in combination with chemotherapy in children with leukemia. We previously reported that azacitidine was safe and well tolerated in AALL15P1 (ASPHO 2021) and herein we report survival outcomes.

Methods

The Children’s Oncology Group (COG) trial AALL15P1 (NCT02828358) was a single arm, open label, groupwide pilot trial. The primary aim of the trial was to evaluate the tolerability of azacitidine in addition to Interfant-06 standard chemotherapy in infants with newly diagnosed KMT2A-r ALL. Estimation of 5-year EFS was an exploratory aim, given the small sample size. Eligibility criteria included B-ALL or acute leukemia of ambiguous lineage with ≥50% B-lymphoblasts, <366 days of age at diagnosis, and >36 weeks gestational age at enrollment. Exclusions included Down syndrome, secondary ALL, and prior cytotoxic therapy (except intrathecal chemotherapy or …

A Study On Vivian Fine’S Chamber Concerto For Cello And Six Instruments, Andrea Beltran Landers May 2023

A Study On Vivian Fine’S Chamber Concerto For Cello And Six Instruments, Andrea Beltran Landers

Dissertations

The music of American composer Vivian Fine (1913-2000) has fallen into obscurity despite its high quality. Her musical career has led her from being a child-prodigy at the piano to being a part of the elite inner circle of avant-garde composers in New York in the early 1930s, and ultimately to a faculty position at Bennington College in the 1960s. Due to the stability and job security that the academic world brought to Fine, she was able to dedicate most of her time to composition. The Chamber Concerto for Cello and Six Instruments belongs to this fruitful period in her …

Emotional Distress Claims, Dignitary Torts, And The Medical-Legal Fiction Of Reasonable Sensitivity, Alessandra Suuberg May 2023

Emotional Distress Claims, Dignitary Torts, And The Medical-Legal Fiction Of Reasonable Sensitivity, Alessandra Suuberg

Journal of Law and Health

Can individuals with a highly sensitive temperament recover in tort for intentional infliction of emotional distress (IIED)? In 2019, an article in the University of Memphis Law Review raised this question, referring to the "Highly Sensitive Person" (HSP) construct in psychology and asking whether the IIED tort’s 'reasonable person' standard discriminates against highly sensitive plaintiffs. Following up on that discussion, the present article considers how the law of IIED has historically treated plaintiffs with diagnosed psychiatric vulnerabilities that are either known or unknown to the defendant. The article also extends this discussion to the law's treatment of temperaments, such as …

Making The Revolution: The Young Lords And The Creation Of A New Puerto Rican Identity, Jaylynn M. Rodriguez May 2023

Making The Revolution: The Young Lords And The Creation Of A New Puerto Rican Identity, Jaylynn M. Rodriguez

Sociology Honors Projects

In this paper, I provide a critique of the Young Lords by dissecting how the Young Lords shifted Puerto Rican identity from an assimilationist perspective to a politicized and decolonial one. Through understanding Puerto Rico (and consequently, Puerto Ricans) as an extension of what Anibal Quijano calls the 'coloniality of power’, I argue that the Young Lord’s develop a dichotomy between good vs. bad Puerto Ricans, where good Puerto Ricans are affirmed and legitimized as genuine Puerto Ricans, while bad Puerto Ricans are discredited and excluded from the movement. I identify four archetypes to show how the Young Lords divided …

Sinyolo Muchiya V The People Appeal No 139/2021 [24 August 2023], O'Brien Kaaba, Ndindase Chirwa

SAIPAR Case Review

It is not often that female complainants of sexual assaults are readily believed by criminal justice institutions. Often, they are re-victimised and turned into suspects instead of being seen as victims. The law itself is often blind to their plight and unique needs. Poor and insensitive investigations, cautionary rules of evidence, insensitive cross examination, among others, combine to condemn them to secondary citizenship in the criminal justice system. Often, the criminal justice system in sexual assault cases unfairly tilts in favour of an accused without considering the needs of victims (and their families) and the public.

Fortunately, in this case …

Canine Heartworm Infection And Prophylaxis Use Among Pet Caretakers From The Cumberland Gap Region Of Tennessee, Usa, Charles T. Faulkner

Faculty Other Scholarly Content

The prevalence of infection with canine heartworm (CHW), Dirofilaria immitis, continues to increase across the United States, regardless of the availability of effective and affordable prophylactic products. Current reports of CHW prevalence as estimated by the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) are thought to under-represent the true magnitude of the issue because pet dogs that do not receive regular veterinary care are often excluded. This study estimated the prevalence of CHW in pet dogs and associated prophylaxis use in pet dogs in the Cumberland Gap Region with a combined doorstep diagnostic testing approach and caretaker survey. Dogs tested (n = …

Objective: This observational study aimed to determine whether attachment style predicted first responders' mental health and resilience. Method: Data were from a treatment-seeking sample of first responders (N = 237). Each participant completed six assessments measuring attachment, resilience, generalized anxiety, depression, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Results: On the attachment assessment, 25.3%were categorized as secure, 19.0%as dismissive, 25.3% as preoccupied, and 30.4% as fearfully attached. As predicted, securely attached participants had the lowest scores for generalized anxiety, depression, suicidality, and posttraumatic stress disorder and the highest scores on the resiliency measure, followed by dismissive, preoccupied, and fearfully …

Hawk Mountain Raptor Migration Phenology’S Relation To Weather, Eric Burgos May 2023

Hawk Mountain Raptor Migration Phenology’S Relation To Weather, Eric Burgos

Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty

We have been studying year-round raptor migration phenology across the United States and North America for multiple decades now. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary’s Autumn migration hawk count began in 1934 and is the longest running raptor migration count in the world. A decline in total raptor counts passing through Hawk Mountain’s North Lookout is well documented and much research has already been done in what could be the main causes for this decrease in counts year-over-year. We know that cold front passages have long been associated with autumnal migration in northeastern North America. Using updated analysis techniques, we examined 60 years’ …

Age Before Fundamental Right? Resolving The Contradiction Presented By An Age Restriction On Running For Executive Offices In Montana's Constitution, Kevin Frazier

Barry Law Review

The Montana Constitution guarantees that “[t]he rights of persons under 18 years of age shall include, but not be limited to, all the fundamental rights of this Article unless specifically precluded by laws which enhance the protection of such persons.” Adults receive similarly strong protections. According to Article II, Section 15, of the Montana Constitution, “[a] person 18 years of age or older is an adult for all purposes,” except for legislated limits on the legal age to purchase alcohol.

It follows that all Montanans have a constitutional claim to the fundamental right that "[a]ll elections shall be free and …
