Promoting Successful Discharges From Skilled Nursing Rehabilitation Units Among Older Adults, Melissa A. Tweet
Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations
Older adults may face occupational limitations that serve as a barrier to maintaining independence in their homes for various reasons, including the onset of illness, injury, or age-related generalized weakness. When individuals are admitted to the hospital and require ongoing rehabilitation to improve their functional abilities, they require effective and client-centered discharge planning to promote a successful transition from the rehabilitation unit. There is a continued need to explore how occupational therapists can provide quality discharge planning throughout the patient’s therapeutic process and methods to facilitate the carryover of skilled interventions after discharge. This capstone project aimed to obtain in-depth …

Occupation-Based Sexual Health Education For Adolescents With Disabilities, Elizabeth J. Klocke
Occupational Therapy Capstone Presentations
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities experience barriers to learning about sexual health education even though there is documented interest in this subject. Additionally, caregivers of children with disabilities lack experience and knowledge of their children’s sexual developmental needs. My capstone project aimed to provide comprehensive sexual education to adolescents with disabilities and education on childhood sexual development to healthcare professionals, educators, and parents. The literature and needs assessment indicated a need for sexual health education for both students with intellectual and developmental disabilities and caregivers. Due to viewing clients in a holistic manner, occupational therapy is uniquely qualified to …

Art changes culture while policy codifies it. Radical revolutionary movements are often accompanied by equally radical shifts in art and design. I cataloged, compared, and contrasted the semiotic power of three specific symbols and their most significant historical moments in the United States. Through the examination of; Stonewall, The Equality March March Against Death, The Day The World Said No To War, The 1968 Summer Olympics, and The 2020 Black Lives Matter, the shifting of each ideologies symbol from inflammation in the media to recognition showcases the clarifying function along with creating unity and pride in community that is integral …

Shiftable Load Forecasting And User-Centric Demand-Side Optimization For Nanogrid, Akash Kumar
Shiftable Load Forecasting And User-Centric Demand-Side Optimization For Nanogrid, Akash Kumar
Theses
Increased focus on sustainability and energy decentralization has positively impacted the adoption of nanogrid (NG). Despite its perceived advantages, NG’s high load volatility poses risk not only to its stability but also to the associated network. This is further exacerbated by the user’s transient moods and the probabilistic nature of metrological events. Moreover, unoptimized operation of electrical appliances in a NG, especially in peak hours, raises the energy cost substantially. Thus, for risk aversion and cost savings, day-ahead demand-side optimization is highly required, especially for shiftable loads. Moreover, most load centers, aspiring to be NGs, have either limited or no …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: HIV, first identified in 1981, remains a persistent public health problem affecting 1.1 million Americans today. Detection is a critical first step to ending the HIV epidemic and the CDC recommends universal HIV screening for all patients 13-64 years of age regardless of risk factors. HIV screening rates are suboptimal especially in adolescent and young adult populations who face unique barriers to screening. The aim of this project was to improve HIV screening rates in adolescent and young adult patients at a large, urban FQHC.

Iron overload is an excessive accumulation of iron in the body and can be either inherited or acquired through chronic blood transfusions. Assessment of hepatic iron concentration (HIC) is important in the management and monitoring of iron overload. Despite liver biopsy being the gold standard method for assessing HIC, it is invasive, painful, unsuitable for repeated measurements, and carries the risk of bleeding and infection. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) methods based on transverse relaxation rate (R2*) have emerged as a non-invasive alternative to liver biopsy for assessing HIC. Multispectral fat-water-R2* modeling techniques, such as the non-linear square (NLSQ) fitting and …
