How Can Meat Consumption Be Both Increasing And Decreasing?, Harold A. Herzog
How Can Meat Consumption Be Both Increasing And Decreasing?, Harold A. Herzog
Herzog - Dietary Issues
The percentage of Americans who do not eat meat has doubled in the past two decades. Per capita meat consumption in the U.S., though, has not changed in decades and remains among the highest in the world. The moralization-polarization effect explains this paradox. Cognitive dissonance may induce some people to eat less meat but others to eat more.
Relationships Between Vector Mosquitoes And Climate Change Derived From Long Term Ecological Data In The United States, Nicholas Scott
Relationships Between Vector Mosquitoes And Climate Change Derived From Long Term Ecological Data In The United States, Nicholas Scott
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Climate change has significant ecological and societal consequences as evident from the past few decades. It has had a large impact on many species, including vector mosquitoes. Although how climate change impacts mosquitoes of the tropical world has been explored, temperate areas remain inadequately studied. Therefore, the medical and healthcare sectors are underprepared for treating mosquito-borne diseases (EEE and Western Nile virus). Based on a long-term ecological dataset covering the past ~10 years across 45 sites, we streamlined, processed, and subsequently analyzed data by building statistical models to understand changes among mosquito populations in the US in response to climate …

Use Of Social Media During The Covid-19 Pandemic Of 2020, Aliya Goncalves Almeida
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Nowadays billions of people use social media platforms as a way to keep in touch with family and friends, fill spare time, find content, find inspiration for things to do and buy, share, and discuss opinions with others, and the list goes on. This project focused and investigated on the use of social media during the years, in particular during quarantine/lockdown. Utilizing the public source data, I explored several research questions including how many hours people spent on social media, the popularity of social media apps, as well as what age group uses social media platforms (teenagers, young adults, adults). …

Witnessing Torture: Staged Violence, Spectatorship And The Theatre Of Political Imprisonment, Kyle Imbeau
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In a recent interview, renowned fight director B.H. Barry said of his work, and of the nature of violence, "I’m not frightened of violence. It’s a way of expressing something that you can’t do with words" (Kennedy). Staged violence has been common in performance from its origins, often necessitated by a text, and has evolved into its own discipline of theatre practice with regulations and credentialing processes to ensure the safety of actors and audiences. As such, we have come to know staged violence as a practical problem to be solved, a cog in the machine of a production process. …
Temporal Changes In Biological Community Structure In Response To Wetland Restoration: A Study Based On Amphibians And Reptiles, Kayla Keith
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Wetland degradation is a serious environmental concern worldwide. In the United States, over half of the wetland ecosystems have degraded since 1780, which can have numerous, lasting consequences with negative outcomes on ecosystems and human society alike. Ecological restoration can regain both the lost wetland acreage and functions. Both global and national scale interests in ecological restoration have trickled down, which has kindled the local and regional natural resource managers and conservation authorities to invest in restoration. Consequently, large-scale wetland restoration projects are now underway in southeastern Massachusetts, which has coincided with a decline in commercial cranberry farming in the …
Narcissistic Parenting And Its Effects On Parenting Styles And Child Development, Amy Palumbo
Narcissistic Parenting And Its Effects On Parenting Styles And Child Development, Amy Palumbo
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Narcissism development in children has been a widely studied subject; however, little research has examined parental narcissism. There have been two specific studies that have researched narcissism in parents. Within these studies it was found that parental and child bonds are not ideal, which usually results in parents having low senses of well-being and satisfaction with their bond (Hart, 2017; Horton, 2021). For each of our studies, we explored how aspects of an individual’s growth and development are linked with parental narcissism. In Study 1, we investigated the link between both grandiose and vulnerable parental narcissism and the mental well-being …
Understanding Quantum Field Theory And Standard Model To Explore Beyond Standard Model Physics, Alize Sucsuzer
Understanding Quantum Field Theory And Standard Model To Explore Beyond Standard Model Physics, Alize Sucsuzer
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Motivated by the goal of participating in astroparticle physics research in graduate school, we aimed to understand the Standard Model of particle physics and the Feynman diagrams through which particle interactions are described, so that we could learn about the properties of certain astroparticles. The axiomatic principle that governs fundamental physics is manifest covariance, implying that the mathematical forms of the physical laws are the same to all observers. Maintaining covariance requires 4-vector representation using group theoretical techniques based on symmetries, as well as a transition from single-particle quantum physics to many-particle quantum field theory (QFT). The Standard Model of …
A Carnival Of Carnivals: A Pedagogical Analysis Of Different Settings Of Carnival Of Venice, Freddy Maresca
A Carnival Of Carnivals: A Pedagogical Analysis Of Different Settings Of Carnival Of Venice, Freddy Maresca
Student Theses
Jean-Baptiste Arban’s Carnival of Venice is a technical behemoth that provides cornetists the opportunity to demonstrate their virtuosity across multiple skills related to playing the cornet. As such, many cornet virtuosos have taken to writing their own theme and variation arrangements of Carnival to push the limit of what is possible on the cornet. This survey analyzes the Carnivals of J.B. Arban, John Hartmann, Jules Levy, Herman Bellstedt, William Rimmer, Herbert L. Clarke, and Del Staigers. The pedagogical analysis therein spans three primary domains of cornet skill: multiple tonguing, interval training, and range. This analysis should be used as a …

Preparation, Characterization And Electron Yield Analysis On Highly Insulating Granular Particles, Heather Allen
Physics Capstone Projects
This study focuses on obtaining reliable electron yield measurements of highly insulating granular particles of various shape, size, and composition. Measurements of this kind have long been considered too difficult to collect on granular samples due to experimental complexities leading to a critical knowledge gap in the fundamental electrostatic behaviors of dust. A significant portion of this study was spent on preparing and characterizing granular samples before any type of measurement took place. Particles of varying sizes ranging from ~1 μm to ~100 μm, shapes including cubical, spherical, and angular, and composition including NaCl, MgO, Al2O3 and …

Ivy House And Other Stories: A Collection Of Horror, Vanessa Deltufo
Ivy House And Other Stories: A Collection Of Horror, Vanessa Deltufo
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The centerpiece of my thesis is called Ivy House and it’s a gothic novella that is very inspired by Mexican Gothic, showing similar themes of a family abusing the natives of the land to the point of their own demise. The other four short stories I write are all inspired by female horror and Gothic writers before me, as I represent a lot of the struggles women face and fear. My stories also elevate themes of repression through addictions, the supernatural, isolated settings, and everything in between.
Party Alignment On Gun Laws: Urban V.S. Rural, Roz Rozner
Party Alignment On Gun Laws: Urban V.S. Rural, Roz Rozner
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Mass shootings in the United States have led to debate about gun rights and increased division over the second amendment. Have parties’ positions on gun laws affected voter alignment? This study seeks to determine the effects of restrictive gun laws over time on party alignment within the United States. The urban rural divide in the United States has played a distinctive role in voter alignment on issues like restrictive gun laws. To evaluate this claim, this study uses the Pew Research Center and other opinion polls from the last twenty years to determine whether restrictive gun laws produce higher levels …

The Reionization Cluster Survey imaged 41 galaxy clusters with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), in order to detect lensed and high-redshift galaxies. Each cluster was imaged to about 26.5 AB mag in three optical and four near-infrared bands, taken in two distinct visits separated by varying time intervals. We make use of the multiple near-infrared epochs to search for transient sources in the cluster fields, with the primary motivation of building statistics for bright caustic crossing events in gravitational arcs. Over the whole sample, we do not find any significant (≳5σ) caustic crossing events, in line with expectations from semi-analytical …

Background
Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a haematological malignancy with increasing global incidence. Diagnosis of MM should be initiated at the primary care level to achieve the best patient outcome. However, this can be delayed due to nonspecific presenting symptoms, such as back pain and fatigue.
Objectives
The aim of this study was to investigate if commonly requested blood tests could indicate MM in primary care and potentially lead to earlier diagnosis.
Design and Methods
This retrospective observational study involved an audit of clinical and laboratory data from 109 MM patients, including patients with Active MM (N = 53), Smouldering MM …

Functionalized Nanoprobes For Multiplexed Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Detection Of Cancer Biomarkers, Sydney D. Hakimi
Functionalized Nanoprobes For Multiplexed Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopic Detection Of Cancer Biomarkers, Sydney D. Hakimi
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Cancer has a huge impact on people across the world. In 2020, there were about 19.3 million cancer cases and approximately 10 million deaths globally. Early detection and diagnosis of cancer results in a higher rate of survival of the disease. A key challenge is the need for a highly sensitive technique for early cancer detection. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and scattering (SERS) is a technique that can address the challenge by detecting biomarkers such as Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and Neuron-specific enolase (NSE), which provide diagnostic information for assessing cancer detection. This work focuses on the use of gold nanoprobes conjugated …

Individuals from the deaf and hard-of-hearing community are likely to experience more anxiety and depression due to defective cognitive, social, communicational, and emotional skills (Azizi et al., 2019). The word “disability” is embedded with historical negative connotations with phrases such as “deaf and dumb” because if they were deaf or mute then they were automatically labeled as inferior (Horovitz, 2007). Since the 18th century, the DHH community has been seen as incapable, even inhuman, hence the development of emotional deficiencies that bleed into one’s perception of society and their self esteem (Gallaudet, 1886).

Multi-Mode Total Focusing Method (Mtfm) To Detect High-Temperature Hydrogen Attack (Htha) – A Review, Anjar Oktikawati, Rini Riastuti, Nursidi Yuanto
Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings
High temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) is a commonly observed harm component in carbon steels exposed to high temperature and pressure in a hydrogen-rich environment. Hydrogen together with carbon responds to produce methane. The formation of methane bubbles in steel can lead to loss of fracture toughness and lead to intergranular cracking. The main challenge of this problem lies in early warning systems that can detect these bubble clusters before they reach the advanced stage. Several advanced ultrasonic inspections have been developed over the years due to the challenges of inspecting materials for defects and discontinuities. These cover time-of-flight diffraction (ToFD), …

The oil and gas industry is one of the world's largest and most influential energy contributors. All aspects involved in the operation of this industry are fundamental to be reviewed and managed correctly, especially by preventing or minimizing the failures that could occur. Uniform corrosion is the most common component failure mechanism that can cause failure in the oil and gas industry. The company's actions in managing and preventing the risk of this type of failure have a major role in the sustainability of the company due to the possibility of more significant impacts if the risk cannot be handled …
