Conviction On Interpretation, Advocate Adaptability, And The Future Of Emojis And Emoticons As Evidence, Samantha Lyons
Conviction On Interpretation, Advocate Adaptability, And The Future Of Emojis And Emoticons As Evidence, Samantha Lyons
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The dawning of the digital age introduced new and unique interpretive quandaries for judges and litigators alike. These quandaries include (but are not limited to) misinterpretation of pictorial slang as used in instant messaging, new or collateral meanings invented by phrases paired with specific emoticons or emojis, and the existence of emojis alone as communicative accessories.
This Note analyzes how lawyers and judges have essential free reign to treat emojis as they see fit: a prosecutor can argue, even in good faith, that the inclusion of an emoji depicting an open flame means the sender knew the heroin he sold …

From Hashtag To Hash Value: Using The Hash Value Model To Report Child Sex Abuse Material, Jessica Mcgarvie
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
In the summer of 2021, Apple announced it would release a Child Safety Feature (CSF) aimed at reducing Child Sex Abuse Materials (CSAM) on its platform. The CSF would scan all images a user uploaded to their iCloud for CSAM, and Apple would report an account with 30 or more flagged images to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Despite Apple’s good intentions, they received intense backlash, with many critics arguing the proposed CSF eroded a user’s privacy. This article explores the technology behind Apple’s CSF and compares it to similar features used by other prominent tech companies. …

An Economic Analysis Of The United Kingdom Given The Possible Effects Of Overthrowing The Northern Ireland Protocol, Joshua P. Brink
An Economic Analysis Of The United Kingdom Given The Possible Effects Of Overthrowing The Northern Ireland Protocol, Joshua P. Brink
Honors Thesis
This research paper examines the current conflict between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol negotiation. This negotiation was created following the UK’s decision to leave the EU in an event known as Brexit. The conflict has occurred because many Brexiteers in the UK want to override parts of the Protocol since it is a burden for the UK’s economy. The EU, however, has threatened to retaliate since this would be breaking the agreement between these two parties. Furthermore, this paper attempts to evaluate the conflict as a whole, examining all perspectives of …
Esg Disclosure Scores And Ceo Compensation, Zane M. Rankin
Esg Disclosure Scores And Ceo Compensation, Zane M. Rankin
Honors Thesis
This paper examines the impact of environmental, social, governance (ESG) disclosure scores on chief executive officer (CEO) compensation. I analyze the S&P 500 from 2011 – 2021 utilizing the within estimation method for fixed effects regression models to find that a one point increase in a firm’s ESG disclosure score is associated with a 0.49% increase in CEO compensation, ceteris paribus. However, certain S&P 500 industries have an advantage in boosting their ESG disclosure score relative to other industries. After including interaction terms between industry and ESG disclosure score, I find that, for the median industry, a one point increase …

Maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy can result in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), which describes a range of developmental disorders. The goal of this study was to examine the association between impaired cerebrovascular function and behavioral abnormalities associated with FASD. We fed Sprague-Dawley dams a liquid diet with or without alcohol (3% ethanol) for the duration of their pregnancy. We then performed short-term memory and motor coordination assessments on the offspring during adolescence or adulthood. Next, we examined cerebral arteriole reactivity to the vasodilators nitroglycerin, adenosine diphosphate, N-methyl-D-aspartate, and iloprost. We found impairment in eNOS-, nNOS-, and K-channel-dependent dilation …
Routing Battery-Constrained Delivery Drones In A Depot Network: A Business Model And Its Optimization-Simulation Assessment, Yanchao Liu
Industrial and Systems Engineering Faculty Research Publications
This paper proposes a novel business model for on-demand package shipment services using drones, and evaluates different modeling and solution approaches for the drone routing problem that underpins the service operation. In the proposed service, customers’ shipment orders of arbitrary origins and destinations, payload weights and bid values are collected every five minutes, and available drones from multiple depots are then dispatched to fulfill a subset of these orders in a way to maximize profit. A drone path starts from a depot, serves one or more customer orders in sequence, and ends at a depot for battery recharging, which incurs …

Redefining Unnatural: A Modern Understanding Of Paul’S Homophobia, Emma Bradley
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper examines the change in the meaning of the word “unnatural” in Romans 1:26-27, and establishes both an idea of what the Apostle Paul intended and a definition for how the word is used in modernity. There are five sections, each one building off of the next: Background, Analysis of the Text, Scholar’s Reading of the Text, Understanding and Usage in Antiquity, Modern Definition and Understanding, and Conclusion. The paper discovers that Paul’s intention with the word “unnatural” can be summarized as “any sex which is non-procreative, outside of marriage, and goes against gender roles.” However, a modern definition …

An Investigation On The Resilience Of Long Short-Term Memory Deep Neural Networks, Christopher Vasquez
LSU Master's Theses
In a world of continuously advancing technology, the reliance on these technologies continues to increase. Recently, transformer networks [22] have been implemented through various projects such as ChatGPT. These networks are extremely computationally demanding and require cutting-edge hardware to explore. However, with the growing increase and popularity of these neural networks, a question of reliability and resilience comes about, especially as the dependency and research on these networks grow. Given the computational demand of transformer networks, we investigate the resilience of the weights and biases of the predecessor of these networks, i.e. the Long Short-Term (LSTM) neural network, through four …

Creation Of Tatde Rlnps For The Excision Of Integrated Hiv-1 Proviral Dna, Mahmudul Hasan
Creation Of Tatde Rlnps For The Excision Of Integrated Hiv-1 Proviral Dna, Mahmudul Hasan
Theses & Dissertations
The persistence of integrated human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) proviral DNA despite combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the principal challenge to eliminating HIV-1 infection. This is made ever more complex based on the high viral mutation rates, diversity and resistance profiles. Taken together, these factors present principal obstacles towards any means to eliminate the virus from its infective human host. To address these factors, we have developed and validated a TatDE rLNP RNA delivery system. The system utilizes Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR) guide RNAs (gRNAs) to target multiple exons of an integrated proviral HIV-1 (tat1-2 …
Intramuscular Administration Of The Host-Derived Immunostimulant Cpdi-02 Increases Protection Of Outbred Mice And Piglets Against Dermal Mrsa Infection In A Curative Setting And Is Well Tolerated After Repeated Administration, Jason P. Stewart
Theses & Dissertations
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of bacterial skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and the leading cause of hospital-associated infections in the United States. The abundance of S. aureus infections is due, in part, to its virulence factors that suppress host immune system and the development of antibiotic resistance strains such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). In contrast to antibiotics, Host-Directed Therapeutics (HDTs), avoid the pitfalls of antibiotics by targeting the host for immune system rather than targeting the pathogen. This mechanism of action avoids selective evolutionary pressure, which leads to antibiotic resistance and helps the host immune …
Mechanisms Of Mutated Myosin Vb Mediated Cholestasis In Microvillus Inclusion Disease, Melissa S. Holzapfel
Mechanisms Of Mutated Myosin Vb Mediated Cholestasis In Microvillus Inclusion Disease, Melissa S. Holzapfel
Theses & Dissertations
Microvillus inclusion disease (MVID) is a constitutive intestinal epithelial disease which causes definitive intestinal failure and cholestatic liver disease primarily caused by mutations in the Myosin Vb gene. Genotype-clinical phenotype associations suggest that the progression of liver disease can be predicted through a correlation between myosin Vb residual function and variable retention of bile salt transport machinery in intestinal enterocytes and liver hepatocytes. We proposed that aberrant distribution of bile salt transport proteins disrupts enterohepatic regulation of bile acids and contributes to the progression of cholestatic liver disease. To investigate the genotype-phenotype correlation, samples from MVID patients were evaluated for …
Self-Managment Of Urinary Incontinence In Women, Abbey Klein
Self-Managment Of Urinary Incontinence In Women, Abbey Klein
Theses & Dissertations
Urinary incontinence is experienced by approximately 60% of adult women in the United States and negatively impacts many aspects of physical and psychological health. Many women do not seek care for urinary incontinence due to social stigma. However, those who do seek care do not often receive treatment options that align with clinical guidelines. Urinary incontinence self-management has been used interchangeably in the literature with other terms, like self-care and coping, but no conceptual definition has been delineated. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to describe urinary incontinence self-management in women. To accomplish this, a concept analysis was conducted …

Theses & Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in men in the United States. Treatment for prostate cancer, such as androgen deprivation therapy, radiation, and surgery are effective until resistant cells arise and develop castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). CRPC is often difficult to treat due to androgen-independent signaling and growth. Here we target the altered redox balance in prostate cancer with MnTnBuOE-2-PyP (BuOE), a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic and ADT treatments. We investigated prostate cancer growth with BuOE and multiple ADT treatments in CRPC cell line models, C42B and 22Rv1. Our results show BuOE and ADT …

Rural spousal caregivers caring for a person living with moderate to severe dementia at home are at risk of serious health consequences because they are unable to attend to their own personal health needs. Insufficient evidence exits that informs how contextual components of the rural spousal caregiving situation prevent caregivers from practicing personal health promotion and wellness while caregiving during the later stages of dementia. The aims of this qualitative, descriptive, multiple case study were to: 1) describe transition points in the rural spousal caregiver’s role across the dementia disease trajectory, 2) describe the rural spousal caregiver’s experience with personal …
'The Very Structure Of Opportunities Has Collapsed': How Taxation Policies Enhance, Decay, And Otherwise Affect The Distribution Of Health & Health Services In The United States, Valerie Pacino
Theses & Dissertations
Taxation is a function of government that patterns our lives socially, economically, and politically, but it remains understudied in public health. This dissertation examines three different elements of tax policy in the United States. First, a systematic review assesses the effects of in-work tax credits on child health outcomes and suggests they improve some infant and child health outcomes, particularly overall health, low birthweight, gestational age, and abuse and neglect. It concludes with suggestions to improve both the study of and structure of tax credits. Next, an interrupted time series analysis tracks ten years of community benefits spending by nonprofit …
