Lessons From Chloroviruses: The Complex And Diverse Roles Of Viruses In Food Webs, John Delong, James L. Van Etten, David Dunigan
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Viruses can have large effects on the ecological communities in which they occur. Much of this impact comes from the mortality of host cells, which simultaneously alters microbial community composition and causes the release of matter that can be used by other organisms. However, recent studies indicate that viruses may be even more deeply integrated into the functioning of ecological communities than their effect on nutrient cycling suggests. In particular, chloroviruses, which infect chlorella-like green algae that typically occur as endosymbionts, participate in three types of interactions with other species. Chlororviruses (i) can lure ciliates from a distance, using them …

I Want To Be A Teacher But The Profession Won’T Let Me: How A Criminal Record Alters A Black Man’S Teaching Aspirations, Terrence S. Mctier Jr., Cameron Beatty
The Qualitative Report
There is a shortage of Black men pursuing and or entering the pre-K-12 teaching profession. Some of the causes for the lack of Black men in the teaching profession stems from burnout, the school-to-prison pipeline, bad experiences as students, and a myriad of other reasons. We believe that Black men having a criminal record has not been fully explored or brought to the forefront as a major issue amongst the teaching profession and teacher preparation programs. To highlight this issue, we highlight and center the experience of one Black male who wanted to become an elementary reading teacher but was …

Using Timeline Methodology To Facilitate Qualitative Interviews To Explore Sexuality Experiences Of Female Pakistani-Descent Immigrant Adolescents, Neelam Saleem Punjani Dr., Elisavet Papathanassoglou Dr., Kathleen Hegadoren, Zubia Mumtaz, Saima Hirani, Margot Jackson
The Qualitative Report
In qualitative research, there is a growing interest in understanding the use of timelines in combination with other qualitative methods. In this paper, we will address how the creation of timelines facilitated and informed the process of semi-structured interviews. We used an interpretive descriptive qualitative study to understand the perceptions and experiences of developing sexuality among female adolescents of Pakistani descent, and timelines were used as a part of the semi-structured interview process. Timelines were created in a participatory way in which girls were asked to recount significant events related to their sexuality. We found that the methodological combinations within …

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Humor in architecture is not at the forefront of architect’s minds, this comes from architects need to be deemed serious. This way of thinking is what has backed architects up into a corner banal and stagnant architecture. Architecture is the art of context, everything in architecture is referential. Humor is foundationally the exact same way, the incongruity theory makes humor possible by putting a concept into context with things and finding contradictions in the process, thus developing a joke. Each of these arts, humor and architecture, are that of context and when architecture is delivered like humor, it points out …

‘How To Be Here?’, Dialoging Into Climate-Change: An Interview With Tim Lilburn, Tim Lilburn, Cary L. Campbell
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
This interview with Canadian, poet, philosopher and essayist Tim Lilburn was commissioned for this Special Issue. Lilburn discusses with Cary Campbell, the general dilemma of ‘how to be here’ – both: how to connect to land and place as a member of settler society, as well as; how to inhabit this moment of acute climate crisis – discussing ideas from Lilburn’s (2017) previous book The Larger Conversation: Contemplation and Place, and the forthcoming Interiority & Climate-Change. This interview follows up from an earlier dialogue between Lilburn and Campbell, published by Philosophasters.org in 2019, and republished below with permission.

Contactless Camera-Based Heart Rate And Respiratory Rate Monitoring Using Ai On Hardware, Dimitrios Kolosov, Vasilios Kelefouras, Pandelis Kourtessis, Iosif Mporas
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Detecting vital signs by using a contactless camera-based approach can provide several advantages over traditional clinical methods, such as lower financial costs, reduced visit times, increased comfort, and enhanced safety for healthcare professionals. Specifically, Eulerian Video Magnification (EVM) or Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) methods can be utilised to remotely estimate heart rate and respiratory rate biomarkers. In this paper two contactless camera-based health monitoring architectures are developed using EVM and rPPG, respectively; to this end, two different CNNs, (Mediapipe’s BlazeFace and FaceMesh) are used to extract suitable regions of interest from incoming video frames. These two methods are implemented and deployed …

How Can Urban Early Childhood Educators Advocate For Accountability In Alternative Assessment Methods, Stephanie Scierka
How Can Urban Early Childhood Educators Advocate For Accountability In Alternative Assessment Methods, Stephanie Scierka
Graduate Teacher Education
Abstract
The introduction of district and educator accountability measures based on student assessment scores has created a move away from developmentally, culturally, and linguistically appropriate practice (Bauml, 2016; Cramer et al., 2018; Frede &Ackerman, 2007; Gullo & Hughes, 2011; Miller & Almon, 2009; NAEYC, 2020; Rushton & Juola-Rushton, 2008). A combination of qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method studies and guidelines from the National Association for the Education of Young Children [NAEYC] (2020) demonstrated a need for developmentally appropriate practices when assessing students. The guiding question focused on how urban early childhood educators could advocate for accountability in alternative assessment methods. The research …

How Can Early Childhood Teachers Implement Developmentally Appropriate Practices That Support Whole-Child Development In Preschool And Kindergarten Programs?, Amanda Nolde
Graduate Teacher Education
Kindergarten has dramatically changed in recent years with the rise of standardized testing and a stronger focus on academic achievement; yet with the change, children were deprived of essential components of a foundational education that supported the development of the whole child and prepared children to be successful in multiple areas of life (Slade & Griffith, 2013). Teacher-directed instruction has decreased child-centered activities, such as play, to maximize the potential of children’s academic success in the future (Pyle & Danniels, 2017). Despite educators’ positive beliefs around developmentally appropriate practices, the need to find a balance in the integration of academics …

Incorporating native perennial grasses adjacent to annual row crop systems managed on marginal lands can increase system resiliency by diversifying food and energy production. This study evaluated (1) soil organic C (SOC) and total N stocks (TN) under warm-season grass (WSG) monocultures and a low diversity mixture compared to an adjacent no-till continuous-corn system, and (2) WSG total above-ground biomass (AGB) in response to two levels of N fertilization from 2012 to 2017 in eastern Nebraska, USA. The WSG treatments consisted of (1) switchgrass (SWG), (2) big bluestem (BGB), and (3) low-diversity grass mixture (LDM; big bluestem, Indiangrass, and sideoat …

Tolkien's Legendarium: An Answer To The Eternal Question Of Why Warfighters Engage In Armed Conflict, Joe Schmid
Tolkien's Legendarium: An Answer To The Eternal Question Of Why Warfighters Engage In Armed Conflict, Joe Schmid
English Theses
This thesis examines how Tolkien drew upon Northern Courage, Ofermod, Comitatus, and Þræll to illustrate armed conflict in his Legendarium. In pursuit of this task, the author portrays how these principles manifest themselves in the Northern European texts Tolkien was most familiar with as a Professor of Anglo-Saxon Literature. Building upon this knowledge base, these principles are applied to contemporary forms of armed conflict, state sanctioned violence, and the contemporary warfighter condition.

Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Ihi Joy In Work Framework Among Nurses, Jezlynn M. Vonnahme
Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of The Ihi Joy In Work Framework Among Nurses, Jezlynn M. Vonnahme
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Background: Registered nurses are leaving the bedside at alarming numbers with many of them suffering from burnout, a decrease in compassion satisfaction, a lack of joy in work, and/or lack of work-life balance. It is critical these issues within nursing are identified and mitigated in order to reduce the number of nurses planning on leaving the bedside as 33% of nurses are currently considering leaving their role or reducing their hours. This statistic does not help with the current nursing shortage and its prediction to continue to grow with employment needs for nurses expected to increase 9% more than any …

Implementation Of A Nurse-Led Clinical Algorithm For Pressure Injury Prevention Associated With Non-Invasive Ventilation Medical Device Use, Capri Steinkuhler, Kaitlin Rogge
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Purpose and Aims
Medical device related pressure injuries (PI) account for as much as 61-81% of all hospital reported wound incidents (Gefen et al., 2020) and are frequently caused by respiratory devices such as non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Use of NIV in critically ill patients dramatically increased during the pandemic. PI are one of the leading causes of injury to hospitalized patients and lengthens hospital stays (National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel [NPIAP], 2019). The NPIAP recommends routine skin assessment under devices, proper mask fit, protective barrier, moisture reduction, and interdisciplinary collaboration to prevent PIs from NIV masks. This feasibility study’s purpose …

The popular sentiment in curation among contemporary British art institutions has emphasized the attempt to reconcile with the divide between public art and art presented in institutions. The globalization of Britain in contemporary times has led to the wide dissemination of shows curated by British institutions. The location artwork is exhibited can change the reception and interaction with the work. Artists who use their work as a means of activism can benefit from the perception of a global audience. The question arises as to how impactful activism art can be when exhibited within the contemporary institution versus when it is …
Vertical Farming: A Bottom-Up Approach, Michael Martinez
Vertical Farming: A Bottom-Up Approach, Michael Martinez
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The twenty-first century will require innovative solutions to address the effects of climate change. Vertical farming is one solution that could help conserve a significant amount of freshwater and reduce the agricultural industry’ s overuse of pesticides and intensive tilling practices, which contributes to soil erosion and pesticide runoff. There has been significant investment in vertical farming in every region of the United States; however, the cost to produce foods with vertical farming remains more costly than traditional farming, which is in large part due to the substantial amount of electricity needed to power all the technology required to grow …
