Children Are To Be Seen And Heard, Caroline Mcnelis May 2023

Children Are To Be Seen And Heard, Caroline Mcnelis

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The stage is set for the next generation. Our classrooms are filled with young people who have lived through a pandemic, grown up on social media, and counted standardized testing methods in their sleep instead of sheep. Students should be encouraged to ask questions and be curious about who they are and what is going on in the world. By incorporating drama education into their daily curriculum, students can see themselves in positive ways. The opportunities are endless when the teacher believes in them. Students can see themselves as role models, world leaders, and academic achievers with the help of …

Despite the fact that research has consistently shown that multicultural children’s literature has benefits for Black children as well as creating an engaging reading experience for all readers, efforts …

Human Capital Flight Impact On The Greek Economy Post The 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Andrew Cook May 2023

Human Capital Flight Impact On The Greek Economy Post The 2008 Global Financial Crisis, Andrew Cook

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Historically, Greece has been a nation that focused heavily on the trading of goods for its economic success, due to its ideal geographic location serving as a conduit to the near east. However, in recent years the Greek economy has undergone changes that have altered its exports and the structure of the labor market. Greece continues to suffer repercussions from the 2008 Global Economic Crisis, which has caused a large outward migration of skilled workers. During the years of 2010-2015, between 280,000 and 350,000 skilled migrants had fled Greece to work in other nations abroad (Labrianidis & Pratsinakis 2016). Greece’s …

Fedar+: A Federated Learning Approach To Appliance Recognition With Mislabeled Data In Residential Environments, Ashish Gupta, Hari Prabhat Gupta, Sajal K. Das

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the enhancement of people's living standards and the rapid evolution of cyber-physical systems, residential environments are becoming smart and well-connected, causing a significant raise in overall energy consumption. as household appliances are major energy consumers, their accurate recognition becomes crucial to avoid unattended usage and minimize peak-time load on the smart grids, thereby conserving energy and making smart environments more sustainable. Traditionally, an appliance recognition model is trained at a central server (service provider) by collecting electricity consumption data via smart plugs from the clients (consumers), causing a privacy breach. Besides that, the data are susceptible to noisy labels …

Leveraging Neutrosophic Uncertainty Theory Toward Choosing Biodegradable Dynamic Plastic Product In Various Arenas, Mona Mohamed, Karam M. Sallam May 2023

Leveraging Neutrosophic Uncertainty Theory Toward Choosing Biodegradable Dynamic Plastic Product In Various Arenas, Mona Mohamed, Karam M. Sallam

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Numerous studies in recent years have documented the negative effects of plastic waste on the environment and human wellness. Due to their widespread usage in daily life, particularly in packaging, and their rising direct or indirect discharge into the environment, plastics are recognized as an emerging environmental hazard. Thus, this point is considered the first problem in this study. As a result, efforts to replace traditional plastics with bioplastics have intensified. However, studies regarding the effects of conventional and bioplastics (BioPs) are also important. Hence, biodegradable polymers for industrial and commercial usage are essential in the present day as an …

Exploring The Interaction Of Minor-Groove-Binder Netropsin With Dna Using Optical Tweezers, Irbazhusain Shaikh May 2023

Exploring The Interaction Of Minor-Groove-Binder Netropsin With Dna Using Optical Tweezers, Irbazhusain Shaikh

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Netropsin is an antibiotic that binds in the minor grooves of DNA, which also exhibits anticancer properties. There have been many previous studies that explored the binding of this drug to DNA using traditional methods where an ensemble averaging is used. In this study we explore the interaction of Netropsin with DNA at a single molecule level using dual beam optical tweezers. We trapped and stretched a single DNA molecule using optical tweezers to measure the force experienced by the DNA as a function of extension in the absence and presence of various concentrations of Netropsin. Our results show the …

A Song Of Ivory And Steel: Suppressive Empowerment In Game Of Thrones, Cassandra Couto May 2023

A Song Of Ivory And Steel: Suppressive Empowerment In Game Of Thrones, Cassandra Couto

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In this thesis, I will be examining George R. R. Martin’s series, A Song of Ice and Fire (1993--), and its television adaptation, A Game of Thrones (2011-2019). Using a feminist lens, I will be addressing how the adaptation figuratively and literally strips agency from empowered female characters in the novel through portrayals of rape and blatant suppression of the characters, Daenerys Targaryen, Sansa Stark, and Catelyn Stark.

Culture, Identity, & Perspectives During The Anglo-Irish Conflict, Riley Losordo May 2023

Culture, Identity, & Perspectives During The Anglo-Irish Conflict, Riley Losordo

Honors Program Theses and Projects

On December 6th, 1921, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed, thus culminating a centuries-long battle for Irish independence. This, however, was the product of a long road of discourse, debate, and disagreement amongst both English and Irish alike. The corresponding question is: how did identity, ideology, and culture influence all sides of the Irish Question, on both the macro and micro levels, as it applied to Home Rule and independence since the establishment of the Act of Union in 1801? The goal is to analyze the ideologies of unionism and pro-independence movements in Ireland and England, including examining religion and national …

The Role Of Caregivers In Shelters For Women Experiencing Homelessness: A Victimological Approach, Paulina Aguilar Delgado May 2023

The Role Of Caregivers In Shelters For Women Experiencing Homelessness: A Victimological Approach, Paulina Aguilar Delgado

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Research shows that those who experience homelessness have both past traumatic events and experience trauma during their time on the streets. (Aguilar Delgado & Nunes, 2022). For these reasons, their recovery journey while they are temporarily housed in a homeless shelter is dependent on their own traumatic experiences and on the experiences of those who also reside in the shelter; this perpetuates their vulnerable condition and makes them almost entirely dependent on the caregivers in charge of that facility, even though the role of social service providers at organizations for combating homelessness is unclear. The purpose of this chapter is …

Optimizing Photosystem I And Plastocyanin Isolation To Develop A Photosystem I-Catalyst System For Photochemical Hydrogen Production, Angelina Vuong May 2023

Optimizing Photosystem I And Plastocyanin Isolation To Develop A Photosystem I-Catalyst System For Photochemical Hydrogen Production, Angelina Vuong

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Over the course of many years, greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) have formed in large amounts in the atmosphere, which has contributed to global warming. Global warming can lead to extreme weather conditions or have an impact on living organisms, for example, wildfires, droughts, limited amount of food sources, and respiratory issues from pollution. This is mainly due to the use of burning fossil fuel as an energy source, which emits greenhouse gases into the air and traps heat into the atmosphere. Thus, the aim of this study is to assemble and characterize a system …

An Investigation Into The Use Of Ionic Liquid Solvents As Potential Therapeutic Agents To Help Alleviate Disease Caused By The Formation Of Insoluble Plaque Or Depositions, Sundus Alchaar

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Many diseases are caused or worsened by the formation of insoluble aggregates inside the human body, most of which are currently treated by maintenance medication or surgery. Biocompatible Ionic Liquids (ILs) have been explored for use as therapeutic agents, and are also excellent solvents, due to their versatile physical and chemical properties. The aim of this project was to conduct a preliminary exploration of the use of ILs to dissolve different types of depositions, such as kidney stones and crystal-induced arthropathies, and plaques. An imidazolium-based IL and four biocompatible choline amino acid-based ILs ([Ch][AA]-ILs) were synthesized, which are 1-methyl-3-butyl-methylimidazolium iodide …

Genome Mining For Anti-Crispr Operons Using Machine Learning, Bowen Yang, Minal Khatri, Jinfang Zheng, Jitender S. Deogun, Yanbin Yin May 2023

Genome Mining For Anti-Crispr Operons Using Machine Learning, Bowen Yang, Minal Khatri, Jinfang Zheng, Jitender S. Deogun, Yanbin Yin

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Motivation: Encoded by (pro-)viruses, anti-CRISPR (Acr) proteins inhibit the CRISPR-Cas immune system of their prokaryotic hosts. As a result, Acr proteins can be employed to develop more controllable CRISPR-Cas genome editing tools. Recent studies revealed that known acr genes often coexist with other acr genes and with phage structural genes within the same operon. For example, we found that 47 of 98 known acr genes (or their homologs) co-exist in the same operons. None of the current Acr prediction tools have considered this important genomic context feature. We have developed a new software tool AOminer to facilitate the improved …

Resolution Of Cable And Bellmouth Wear Issues, Aiden Kermen, Brendan Mcgillivray, Chase Breyer, Tyler Miller May 2023

Resolution Of Cable And Bellmouth Wear Issues, Aiden Kermen, Brendan Mcgillivray, Chase Breyer, Tyler Miller

Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects

A marine winch system is designed to raise and lower objects from a boat into the ocean. In this system, a cable is fed through a bellmouth from the ship lowering down to the water with a load of up to 50,000 Newtons. With a load this high, frictional wear is inevitable. Ensuring that most of this frictional wear affects the fairlead system, and protects the multimillion-dollar cable is essential.

The project's objective is to improve the current fairlead system that Raytheon uses on the stern of their research vessel. The focus of this improvement will be reducing the amount …

An Argument For The Utilization Of Amphibian Stress As An Indicator Of Wetland Condition, Andrew W. Sisson May 2023

An Argument For The Utilization Of Amphibian Stress As An Indicator Of Wetland Condition, Andrew W. Sisson

Honors College Theses

Traditional forms of rapid wetland condition assessments focus on foliage health, nutrient enrichment, chemical contamination, and surrounding land usage, often overlooking an evaluation of the animals living in the wetland. More intense assessments include the National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA) and indices of biotic integrity, which focus on community composition (e.g., diversity and species richness) and abundances. These indices require expertise in species identification and do not provide information about the animal’s fitness. Animal stress physiology, which generally correlates with measures used to quantify animal fitness (e.g., survival, reproduction, and body condition), may provide a complementary rapid assessment method aimed …

Interconnective Corridors: From Institutional To Educational, Jaylan Burgess May 2023

Interconnective Corridors: From Institutional To Educational, Jaylan Burgess

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The Middle school Architecture of yesterday is not designed for the education of tomorrow. So often, we find the traditional typology of schools to be one dimensional in design by being filled long dead-end corridors, white CMU walls, outdated learning spaces of our parents’ generation, and a disassociation from the surrounding neighborhood. This old-fashioned way of design not only wastes hundreds of square footages on circulation alone but is not conducive of the best possible learning environment of the future.

In this thesis, I will begin to interrogate the existing conditions of the school corridor and explore circulation as it …
