Stewardship Opportunities For Cervical Lymphadenitis And Deep Neck Space Abscesses, Aaron Shaw, Brian R. Lee, Lauren Kazmaier, Emily Baker, Tina Dao, Sandra Arnold, Angela Myers

Research Days

Background: Cervical lymphadenitis (LAD) and deep neck space abscesses (DNSA) are common pediatric infections caused by similar bacteria. We sought to determine differences in presentation, diagnosis, and treatment between LAD and DNSA to identify antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship opportunities.

Methods: Charts were obtained using ICD9/10 codes for retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal abscessed (DNSA), and LAD between 1/1/10-12/31/20 from two pediatric centers. 1981 charts were identified. Charts were excluded if the diagnosis was not a bacterial infection (e.g. Kawasaki disease), if the LAD was not in the neck, or if caused by less common bacteria (e.g. tuberculosis). Data on presenting signs, symptoms, …

A Historical Examination Of Native American And European Agroforestry, Reed Bryant May 2023

A Historical Examination Of Native American And European Agroforestry, Reed Bryant

Bryant University Undergraduate Journal

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), “Agroforestry is the intentional integration of trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems to create environmental, economic, and social benefits. It has been practiced in the United States and around the world for centuries.” However, for many practitioners in the past, agroforestry was not simply an “integration of trees and shrubs into animal farming systems,” nor was it simply a means to produce foodstuffs. For them, agroforestry defined a way of life where trees were fixtures in the landscape which bore many life-giving gifts: fruits and nuts to eat, …

Virginia Journal of Public Health

Background: This study aimed to describe the unique structural barriers faced by Latina women in rural areas of Virginia as they attempt to access the health care system, and, once they have gained access, to identify barriers to intimate partner violence (IPV) disclosure.

Methods: Semi-structured in-depth individual interviews with first-generation Latina immigrants were conducted after initial purposeful convenience sampling and concomitant snowball recruiting. A thematic content analysis using a phenomenological approach was employed to interpret participants' experiences. Initial findings were validated through additional interviews.

Results: The overarching theme expressed by these women was their search for dignity. Emergent sub-themes related …

Examining Opioid Risk Mitigation Practices In A Rural Pain Management Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project, Stanley W. Hatcher, Erica Lewis, Shawn Craddock May 2023

Examining Opioid Risk Mitigation Practices In A Rural Pain Management Clinic: A Quality Improvement Project, Stanley W. Hatcher, Erica Lewis, Shawn Craddock

Virginia Journal of Public Health

Opioid misuse and opioid use disorder rates have led to record opioid-related deaths nationally. Virginia public health officials declared a public health emergency due to the opioid crisis. Provider prescribing practices are part of this complex local and national public health problem. Evidence indicates that prescribers should assess for risks related to substance misuse and abuse in high-risk populations, such as patients on long-term opioid therapy. By evaluating risk level, the provider has additional information to guide treatment decisions and a baseline for assessing future changes in risk status. This project used quality improvement methods to study the implementation of …

A Rapid Review Of The Literature: Cardiovascular Disease Preventive Practices And Rural Black Women, Modjadji M. Choshi, Maria Devalpine

Virginia Journal of Public Health

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among Black/African American women. Rural Black women have the highest CVD prevalence and are more likely to have modifiable risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity than any other race. Accessible evidence-based culture-appropriate self-care programs for risk reduction and CVD prevention can address these disparities. This rapid review aims to provide a comprehensive collection of such programs. Methods. Searches were performed in PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Psychinfo-Embase, and Scopus for studies reporting CVD prevention programs for rural Black women. Three articles met the inclusion criteria, with …

Additionally, many Virginians remain unvaccinated or have not maintained a booster schedule in line with recommendations. The current study investigated willingness to receive the flu and COVID-19 vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, associations between the likelihood of receiving the two vaccines, and differences in uptake by racial group and insurance status. Methods. Participants were adult patients seen for appointments at an ambulatory clinic in Southeast, VA. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing vaccination history and future vaccination intentions. Results. Results revealed significant associations between having received …

Policy Forum: The Tobacco Surcharge & Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Reconciling Equity And Targeted Public Health Interventions, Ben Barber May 2023

Policy Forum: The Tobacco Surcharge & Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Reconciling Equity And Targeted Public Health Interventions, Ben Barber

Virginia Journal of Public Health

Virginia is poised to repeal the tobacco surcharge, an ineffective policy that disproportionately harms low- and middle-income Virginians. (Small, 2023) The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which otherwise strengthened health care access and equity, allows health insurers in the individual and small-group markets to charge smokers up to 50 percent higher premiums relative to nonsmokers. (ACA, 2010) The law’s financial assistance does not apply to this surcharge, forcing enrollees to bear the entire cost of the penalty. This provision was a compromise between the ACA’s drafters, most of whom opposed the surcharge, and the health insurance industry, which …

Sow Temperature Probe Design, Javier Flores May 2023

Sow Temperature Probe Design, Javier Flores

American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities

With temperatures increasing steadily throughout the last century, the swine production industry is beginning to confront an increasingly urgent dilemma. Ambient barn temperatures are now regularly exceeding ideal conditions for optimal milk production, as well as maximum litter size. Temperatures that exceed these conditions can lead to heat stress among sows, which can ultimately lead to death. With sows usually being housed in larger group settings, keeping track of an individual sow’s temperature has never been harder. The focus of this project is efficiently tracking the internal vaginal temperature of a sow. A prototype probe was developed and consists of …

Caring For And Extracting Data From Rats With High-Thoracic Spinal Cord Injuries, Misael Rodriguez

American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities

Individuals who suffer from spinal cord injuries are very susceptible to autonomic dysreflexia, which unfortunately can lead to death in many cases. By studying this injury, a better understanding of the topic can be achieved, along with potential direction for assistive technologies. The purpose of this study was to ensure that rats with High-Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury were being properly cared for throughout the experimental acclimation process, with proper housing, surgical procedures, diet, and post-operative care. In the lab, these objectives were met, and then blood pressure and electrocardiography recordings were taken before and after the animal was paralyzed. This …

Technological Innovations And Design Thinking For Policing And Social Justice, Kiera Edwards May 2023

Technological Innovations And Design Thinking For Policing And Social Justice, Kiera Edwards

American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities

The outcome of interactions between police and citizens is widely held to vary according to the identity of the individual being questioned. This has been a recognized as an issue in law enforcement for some time. This paper will review information on new hard and soft policing technologies and strategies that are designed to reduce the possibilities of police-citizen interactions taking a turn for the worse. In addition to various non-lethal technologies, Artificial Intelligence is often viewed as a potential means of eliminating bias in police interactions. While the literature seems to show some potential for this technology, the end …

Coronal Mass Ejections, Alex Echeverria May 2023

Coronal Mass Ejections, Alex Echeverria

American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities

The underlying dynamics of solar processes are a topic of considerable interest, because the events on the surface of the Sun directly affect the environment of our planet. Certain ‘storms’ that erupt in the outer layers of the Sun can propel masses of electrically charged plasma into the solar system. If the path of that material crosses Earth’s orbit, it can disrupt our societal electronic and satellite resources. Observing and analyzing these events is a first step toward predicting them and hardening our equipment against them. This work reviews how solar scientists collect and view this data on coronal mass …

Hydrogen Embrittlement In Martensitic Stainless Steels And Dual Phase Steels, Britney Bailey May 2023

Hydrogen Embrittlement In Martensitic Stainless Steels And Dual Phase Steels, Britney Bailey

American Journal of Rising Scholar Activities

Hydrogen embrittlement is a phenomenon of hydrogen diffusion into a metal alloy that can cause it to become brittle and fracture. Embrittlement is a critical issue in advanced high strength steels, such as martensitic stainless steels (MSS) and dual phase steels (DPS), and hence, it is necessary to understand this phenomenon to avoid premature material failure under similar conditions. The goal of the current research is to study the changes in the mechanical properties of these steels following the introduction of hydrogen. Samples in this study were cut and polished to conduct hardness measurements before and after electrochemical hydrogen charging. …
