Compatibility Between Native Mississippi Ectomycorrhizal Fungi And Native And Exotic Pine Hosts: Testing For Specificity And The Potential For Rapid Evolution, Hailey A. Long May 2023

Compatibility Between Native Mississippi Ectomycorrhizal Fungi And Native And Exotic Pine Hosts: Testing For Specificity And The Potential For Rapid Evolution, Hailey A. Long

Honors Theses

Pines are highly invasive trees that are commonly used in pine plantations throughout the Southern Hemisphere. However, the survival and subsequent invasion of pines in exotic environments are dependent on the obligate symbiosis between ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and pines. ECM fungi vary in host specificity and compatibility from pine-specialist species in the genus Suillus to broad generalists, such as species within the genera Pisolithus and Scleroderma. In Experiment 1, we sought to understand how the geographic origin of ECM fungi native to the southeastern United States and two pine species (native southeastern United States Pinus taeda and exotic Pinus …

The Evolving Role Of Women In The Sinaloa Cartel: An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Drug Trafficking Organizations, Female Agency, And Economic Mobility, Catherine Page, Kennady Leigh Hertz

Honors Theses

Exploring the role of women in Mexican drug trafficking organizations is a topic that has gained significant traction in the past 30 years. Despite the increase of literature on the topic, few papers theorize as to why women participate. This product sought to explore the various reasons why women participate in Mexican drug trafficking organizations, either willingly, or against their wishes. We hypothesized that women join drug trafficking organizations for two primary reasons: a) they are coerced by male figures in their life, and b.) they participate willingly in an effort to gain economic mobility. To test our hypothesis, we …

¡Si Nicaragua Venció, El Salvador Vencerá!: A Comparative Analysis Of The Nicaraguan Revolution And The Salvadoran Civil War, Edrei Pena May 2023

¡Si Nicaragua Venció, El Salvador Vencerá!: A Comparative Analysis Of The Nicaraguan Revolution And The Salvadoran Civil War, Edrei Pena

Honors Theses

This thesis compares the history of the Nicaraguan Revolution and the Salvadoran Civil War in order to understand why Nicaragua had success, unlike El Salvador. I analyze the history by focusing on four factors I believe are important for a successful revolution. These factors are broad multi-class alliances, military strength and strategy, the role of the Church, and external influences. Through this, I find that the factor of class alliances is the most crucial for a successful revolution to take place. The Sandinistas in Nicaragua had these broad class alliances while the FMLN in El Salvador did not.

Bulk Hydrogen Isotopes In Ordinary Chondrites, Michael J. Cato May 2023

Bulk Hydrogen Isotopes In Ordinary Chondrites, Michael J. Cato

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Bulk hydrogen isotopes in nominally anhydrous meteorites are a key component in our understanding of the distribution of hydrogen in our solar system, including the provenance of water on the Earth. Here, we develop a step-heated continuous-flow method to measure the bulk hydrogen isotopes in nominally anhydrous rocks and use this method to significantly increase the dataset of bulk hydrogen isotopes in ordinary chondrites, nearly doubling the number of equilibrated members. We found that as thermal alteration increases from petrologic type 3.0 to 4, there is a correlated decrease in both hydrogen content and isotope ratio, followed by no significant …

Dynamic Conformational Switching Underlies Tfiih Function In Transcription And Dna Repair And Impacts Genetic Diseases, Jina Yu, Chunli Yan, Thomas Dodd, Chi-Lin Tsai, John A Tainer, Susan E Tsutakawa, Ivaylo Ivanov

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Transcription factor IIH (TFIIH) is a protein assembly essential for transcription initiation and nucleotide excision repair (NER). Yet, understanding of the conformational switching underpinning these diverse TFIIH functions remains fragmentary. TFIIH mechanisms critically depend on two translocase subunits, XPB and XPD. To unravel their functions and regulation, we build cryo-EM based TFIIH models in transcription- and NER-competent states. Using simulations and graph-theoretical analysis methods, we reveal TFIIH's global motions, define TFIIH partitioning into dynamic communities and show how TFIIH reshapes itself and self-regulates depending on functional context. Our study uncovers an internal regulatory mechanism that switches XPB and XPD activities …

The incidence of Alzheimer's Disease in females is almost double that of males. To search for sex-specific gene associations, we build a machine learning approach focused on functionally impactful coding variants. This method can detect differences between sequenced cases and controls in small cohorts. In the Alzheimer's Disease Sequencing Project with mixed sexes, this approach identified genes enriched for immune response pathways. After sex-separation, genes become specifically enriched for stress-response pathways in male and cell-cycle pathways in female. These genes improve disease risk prediction in silico and modulate Drosophila neurodegeneration in vivo. Thus, a general approach for machine learning on …

Structure Of A Eukaryotic Cholinephosphotransferase-1 Reveals Mechanisms Of Substrate Recognition And Catalysis, Lie Wang, Ming Zhou May 2023

Structure Of A Eukaryotic Cholinephosphotransferase-1 Reveals Mechanisms Of Substrate Recognition And Catalysis, Lie Wang, Ming Zhou

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the most abundant phospholipid in eukaryotic cell membranes. In eukaryotes, two highly homologous enzymes, cholinephosphotransferase-1 (CHPT1) and choline/ethanolamine phosphotransferase-1 (CEPT1) catalyze the final step of de novo PC synthesis. CHPT1/CEPT1 joins two substrates, cytidine diphosphate-choline (CDP-choline) and diacylglycerol (DAG), to produce PC, and Mg2+ is required for the reaction. However, mechanisms of substrate recognition and catalysis remain unresolved. Here we report structures of a CHPT1 from Xenopus laevis (xlCHPT1) determined by cryo-electron microscopy to an overall resolution of ~3.2 Å. xlCHPT1 forms a homodimer, and each protomer has 10 transmembrane helices (TMs). The first 6 TMs carve …

Persistent Pediatric Breast Abscesses Following Initial Treatment At Tertiary And Community Centers, Derek Marlor, Kayla Briggs-Groves, Shai Stewart Md, Nelimar Cruz-Centeno, Charlene Dekonenko, Jason D. Fraser

Research Days

Introduction: Little data exist on the management of pediatric breast abscesses that fail initial treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate and report outcomes in these patients.

Methods: All patients <18-years-old treated for a breast abscess between January 2008 and December 2018 were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups: initial treatment at our institution (Group 1) and initial treatment at referring centers (Group 2). The primary outcome was disease persistence following treatment at our institution. Secondary outcomes included treatment modalities and patient characteristics.

Results: In total, 145 patients were identified: 111 in Group 1 and 34 in Group 2. Antibiotics alone were the initial treatment in 52.3% (n=58) of Group 1 patients and 64.7% (n=22) of Group 2 patients. Invasive treatment was more common in Group 1 (45.9% vs 5.8%; p<0.00001). Patients with persistent disease in Group 1 were treated with aspiration (n=7, 50%), I&D (n=5, 35.7%), antibiotics (n=1, 7.14%), and manual expression (n=1, 7.14%.), while Group 2 patients were treated with antibiotics (50%, n=17), aspiration (26.47%, n=9), I&D (17.65%, n=6), and manual expression (5.88%, n=2). Group 2 patients with persistent disease were more likely to be treated with antibiotics or a change in antibiotics (50% vs 7.14%; p=0.005). Following treatment at our institution, the rate of persistent disease was similar between groups (12.6% vs 11.8%).

Conclusions: Persistent breast abscesses may be treated with antibiotics in appropriate cases. Damage to the developing breast bud should be minimized. Disease …
