Using Resonators To Improve The Acoustic Response Of A Speaker, Gordon Dix
Using Resonators To Improve The Acoustic Response Of A Speaker, Gordon Dix
Defensive Publications Series
The housing and component integration of a speaker can affect its frequency response, sometimes causing large peaks in the response that are objectionable from the perspective of a listener. This disclosure describes techniques to improve the frequency response of a speaker by using a small resonator in the housing that can absorb the acoustic energy of an unwanted peak in the response. The resonator can be in the form of a relatively large cavity. Acoustic energy from the speaker can be fed into the cavity using a small channel. The geometry of the channel and the cavity can be tuned …

Movement And Mindfulness In The Transitional Kindergarten Classroom, Larisa Ward-Seitz
Movement And Mindfulness In The Transitional Kindergarten Classroom, Larisa Ward-Seitz
Education | Master's Theses
This study aimed to assess the impact of mindfulness activities, yoga, and kinesthetic movement on students’ self-reported mood, feelings of wellbeing, and levels of calmness and attention. Research suggests that meditation and mindfulness can help students regulate emotions and accordingly decrease levels of stress and increase feelings of wellbeing in the classroom (Dariotis, Mirabal-Beltran, Cluxton-Keller, 2016). Mindfulness has also been shown to increase executive functioning in young children. Kinesthetic movement, including yoga and repetitive movements, has also been shown to increase cognitive functioning in young children, especially in regards to executive functioning (Zeng, Ayyub, Sun, Wen, Xiang, & Gao, 2017). …

Instilling Biblical Dispositions In Faith-Based Teacher Education Programs, Jeff Wiesman
Instilling Biblical Dispositions In Faith-Based Teacher Education Programs, Jeff Wiesman
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
Education faculty understand the importance of emphasizing and assessing teacher candidates’ professional dispositions. While all educator preparation providers examine dispositions, should faculty in our community of Christian colleges and universities include a stronger emphasis on Biblically-based dispositions? This essay explores the beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and values Christian educators should embrace, including dispositions teachers should display in a public or private-school setting. Christians are called to conform to the image of Christ (Romans 8:28) and, therefore, they should exemplify the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:22) and the Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22). In addition, the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5), a service …
Understanding Motivational Differences Through The Lens Of Gamification User Types, Heather J. S. Birch
Understanding Motivational Differences Through The Lens Of Gamification User Types, Heather J. S. Birch
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
In the context of an educational technology course, teacher candidates completed Marczewski’s User Types Hexad Test, a questionnaire based on a typology for classifying both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational tendencies. The test results showed teacher candidates' motivational tendencies, through indicating their resonance with six different User Types, including Socializers, Free Spirits, Achievers, Philanthropists, Players, and Disruptors. Knowing their User Type allowed teacher candidates to reflect on their own personal motivations to use various types of digital tools, as well as to consider how their peers and their students with different user profiles may be motivated differently than themselves. The …

The Impact Of Polarization On The Political Engagement Of Generation Z Elementary Preservice Teachers And Their Teaching, Patrick Keegan, Kelly P. Vaughan
The Impact Of Polarization On The Political Engagement Of Generation Z Elementary Preservice Teachers And Their Teaching, Patrick Keegan, Kelly P. Vaughan
Democracy & Education
This instrumental case study of Generation Z preservice teachers enrolled in elementary teaching methods courses in social studies and literacy explores the impact of polarization on their political engagement and teaching. Using the 2020 presidential election as a teachable moment, participants developed and taught literacy-infused civics units in order to bring to light their understandings of their role in preparing elementary students as political actors. This study has important implications for how teacher educators can better facilitate elementary preservice teachers’ own political engagement, thereby ensuring equitable democratic learning opportunities for students.
Comprehensive Investigation Of The Role Of Cd38 In Ovarian Nad+ Metabolism And Reproductive Aging, Lauren Haky
Comprehensive Investigation Of The Role Of Cd38 In Ovarian Nad+ Metabolism And Reproductive Aging, Lauren Haky
Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Biological Sciences Master's Theses
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a cofactor and coenzyme found in all living cells and is crucial for energy metabolism and tissue homeostasis. It is well documented that several tissues exhibit an age-related NAD+ decline which is strongly associated with aging and age-associated diseases. While the underlying cause of NAD+ decline is unknown, one possibility is that the major NAD+ consuming enzyme, CD38, may drive tissue NAD+ decline during aging. Several studies have previously reported that NAD+ precursor supplementation or CD38 inhibition increased tissue NAD+ levels, overall health, and lifespan in mice.
Women experience an irreversible decline in reproductive health …

Experiences And Support Needs Of Typically Developing Siblings Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Keely Hamilton
Education | Master's Theses
Children living with an autistic sibling face unique challenges and are in need of support (Angell et al., 2012; Marquis et al., 2019; Molinaro et al., 2020). The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand what the experience of having a sibling with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is like for a typically developing child during middle childhood or preadolescence, the impacts this experience has, and what types of support they feel they need. Five participants were interviewed for this study; all were in middle childhood or preadolescence, live in Marin County, California, and are in a family with a …
The Effect Of Ethnic Studies On White Student Populations, Kelly Coffey
The Effect Of Ethnic Studies On White Student Populations, Kelly Coffey
Education | Master's Theses
The effect of Ethnic Studies courses have shown to impact People of Color in a positive way academically, socially, and emotionally (Cabrera et al., 2014; Cammarota & Romero, 2009; Dee & Penner, 2017), however, for White students the effect is less clear. Often there are feelings of guilt, shame, and embarrassment for White students when confronted with the exposure to the individual and systemic oppression of People of Color by White colonialism and much of this oppression still resonates today (Sleeter & Zavala, 2020). Research also shows that there could be a link between Ethnic Studies coursework and anti-racist behavior …
Creating Inclusive Interface And Online Learning Environments, Grace Mosher
Creating Inclusive Interface And Online Learning Environments, Grace Mosher
Education | Master's Theses
This study seeks to examine educational learning environments with a focus on new platforms of learning, course design, equity, inclusion, and user interface (ex: seeing impaired, cultural differences, gender) that includes the perspectives of students with disabilities. The evolution of learning from singular multi-age classrooms through institutional schools and into dynamic online platforms has radically reshaped the educational ecosystem (Sarkar, 2020), and there have been calls for a deeper understanding of inclusive learning practices to meet the needs of diverse students (Philips & Salem, 2021). Adams (2017) also outlines how the aesthetic interface of each learning environment impacts the quality …
Fostering Intrinsic Motivation Within Secondary Special Education With Attention Towards Teacher Presence And Positive Behavior Support, Desirae Barboza
Fostering Intrinsic Motivation Within Secondary Special Education With Attention Towards Teacher Presence And Positive Behavior Support, Desirae Barboza
Education | Master's Theses
This study sought to understand the conditions high school mild to moderate special education students need to sustain intrinsic motivation. Prior research suggests that overall academic intrinsic motivation is much lower in students with disabilities (Daniel and Cooc 2018). Teachers' expectations can have a strong association with student motivation in their learning and can lead to improved academic outcomes (Johnson, Wildy, & Shand, 2020). Currently, there is a lack of existing research that studies the conditions that cultivate intrinsic motivation among students with special needs. To research how high school mild to moderate special education students sustain intrinsic motivation, the …
Community And Safe Spaces For English Language Learners In Bilingual/Dual Immersion Settings, Miriam Pazos
Community And Safe Spaces For English Language Learners In Bilingual/Dual Immersion Settings, Miriam Pazos
Education | Master's Theses
This qualitative study explores teachers' understanding of English Language Learners and newcomer students' need for a sense of belonging and safe spaces in a bilingual/dual immersion classroom. The goal was to identify some best practices for teachers to create an inclusive classroom for multilingual students. This research uses the lens of two frameworks, Acompañamiento (Sepúlveda III, 2011) and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy. According to Sepúlveda III (2018), Acompañamiento is a response to globalization where there is a need to understand a student's humanity and the need to be part of a community. Acompañamiento is about engagement with one another without goals …
Teachers In Elementary Schools…Do They Have What They Need?, Claire Smith
Teachers In Elementary Schools…Do They Have What They Need?, Claire Smith
Education | Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to understand a group of teachers’ perspectives and experiences about inequitable access to instructional materials for students in K-5 classrooms and the effect this lack of access has had on the teaching and learning process (Albornoz, Berlinski, & Cabrales, 2018). The problem identified for this project was that instructional materials (including textbooks, curriculum documents, and technology) are not equally available at all K-5 schools. Hahnel (2020) discussed how even though California is one of the wealthiest states in the nation, funding awarded to schools in California was not enough to meet educational goals or …
Afterschool Programs: Participation And Belonging In Latinx Students, John Corbolotti
Afterschool Programs: Participation And Belonging In Latinx Students, John Corbolotti
Education | Master's Theses
It is important for students to feel like they belong and that the offering of afterschool programs welcomes them. Afterschool programs develop confidence, engagement, and belonging for students (Fuller et al., 2013). Unfortunately, afterschool sports and extracurricular participation is diminishing and by even greater numbers for students from minority groups (Borden et al., 2006). The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine how educators and school communities might increase and promote participation in extracurricular activities, specifically for Latinx students, by hearing from underrepresented Latinx students about their experiences in afterschool programs. There is limited research regarding how mentors and …
Improving Collaboration With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Parents Of Students With Extensive Support Needs, Isabel Yates
Improving Collaboration With Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Parents Of Students With Extensive Support Needs, Isabel Yates
Education | Master's Theses
The purpose of this research is to understand how to improve collaboration between schools and culturally and linguistically diverse parents of students with extensive support needs who receive special education services. Previous research defined collaboration as a conceptual construct in which principles of shared respect and responsibility are applied to practice (Emmons & Zager, 2018). The collaboration between families and schools is legally mandated but not explicitly explained to teachers or parents how to succeed in engaging respectfully with all families (Cheatham & Lim-Mullins, 2018). The increased complication of supporting nondominant, culturally and linguistically diverse families in addition to the …
Education As A Source Of Hope: An Examination Of Teacher Beliefs And The Lack Of Support For Children With Chronic Health Conditions, Marissa Schow
Education As A Source Of Hope: An Examination Of Teacher Beliefs And The Lack Of Support For Children With Chronic Health Conditions, Marissa Schow
Education | Master's Theses
As survival rates increase, more children with chronic health conditions are returning to K-12 classrooms after receiving medical treatments. Research has shown that many teachers believe that students with chronic health conditions should not have to worry about school while they are going through treatment (Irwin & Elam, 2011; Legislative Alliance for Students with Health Conditions, 2017). Research also suggests that many schools are violating the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 by withdrawing students from the district due to chronic absenteeism (Eaton, 2012; Wilkie, 2012). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore and examine the ways …

Development Of Information Repository(Ir) In Academic Institutions - A Study., Sewali Patowari, P. K. Barooah
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
On the basis of available published literature it is attempted to study the concept of IR, its usefulness and availability in academic institutions, user’s responses thereon. It is found that the concept is very useful to the students and researchers to have free access to required information easily and on time. The concept of copy right law has visible impact on development of IR. With these gathered information the researcher’s attempt to study the status of implementation of IR in selected universities and research institutions of North East India is also hinted.

The Current State Of Conflict, Raghav Sinha '24
Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy
Conflict occurs often throughout history. Conflict shapes the world around us. Without them, we wouldn’t have the same countries we do now, the same technology, or be governed by the same set of rules. Each of these aspects of life was forged by war and unrest. What makes us fight? Why have we stopped fighting? Throughout history, conflict has been prevalent due to the creation and rise of aggression within society; yet aggression has been extinguished by the media and government during the Present Age.

Smothering A Country: Puerto Rico And The Nationalist Party, Franklin Rangel
Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy
The people of Puerto Rico have never had the chance to fully self-govern. Although the relationship between Puerto Rico and the US has changed over the 120+ years since the Spanish crown ruled, one thing has remained consistent: the US has never let its territory free from its domain. Although the island is considered to be a commonwealth, the mainland government recognizes that Puerto Rico is still ruled like an unincorporated territory (1). Puerto Ricans still cannot vote in presidential elections, negotiate trade deals, or maintain their citizenship. And there are scant options for the people. Puerto Ricans virtually no …

Freud’S Influence On Gay Conversion Therapies In The Twentieth Century, Aubrey Hall
Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy
Homophobia has existed within Western societies for centuries, painting gay men as criminals, deviants, and sinners. However, it was not until the turn of the 20th century that homophobia started to run rampant within the field of medicine on the basis of pseudoscientific arguments. Much of this started with the birth of the field of psychoanalysis, which emerged due to Sigmund Freud’s research on human psychology.1 His writings sought to understand the foundations of the human psyche where he explored the unconscious motivations which develop due to life’s experiences.2 Much of his work focuses on the emotional attitudes held towards …

Ayn Rand’S Selfless Woman, Iprefertobe Anonymous
Zeitgeist: A Journal of Politics, History, and Philosphy
Dominique Francon is not a person; she is a barometer. The only significant woman character in Ayn Rand’s novel The Fountainhead, she serves solely as an indication of her current husband’s success. While she is Mrs. Peter Keating, her husband is at the height of his architectural career. When Keating trades her to Gail Wynand, it is then Wynand who is at his best, having secured as wife the woman he desperately wanted to possess. As Mrs. Roark, finally, Dominique signifies the victory of the virtuous egoism that her husband represents over its antithesis, evil altruism. Dominique herself, however, does …
