An Introduction To The Bartik Benefit-Cost Model Of Business Incentives, Timothy J. Bartik
An Introduction To The Bartik Benefit-Cost Model Of Business Incentives, Timothy J. Bartik
Reports
This short report provides an introduction to a new model of the benefits and costs of business incentives to promote state economic development. This model provides potential users—anyone interested in evaluating an incentive project or incentive program in their state—with a model that can be used for practical evaluation purposes, such as deciding whether or not a project should be undertaken, whether or not to expand or terminate a current incentive program, or how an incentive program could be improved by reforms to have higher net benefits. What is most distinctive about the model is that it focuses on how …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Functional outcomes after stroke are strongly related to focal injury measures. However, the role of global brain health is less clear. In this study, we examined the impact of brain age, a measure of neurobiological aging derived from whole-brain structural neuroimaging, on poststroke outcomes, with a focus on sensorimotor performance. We hypothesized that more lesion damage would result in older brain age, which would in turn be associated with poorer outcomes. Related, we expected that brain age would mediate the relationship between lesion damage and outcomes. Finally, we hypothesized that structural brain resilience, which we define in …

Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) is a type 1 transmembrane immunosuppressive protein that is expressed on a wide range of cell types, including cancer cells. Anti-PD-L1 antibodies have revolutionized cancer therapy and have led to improved outcomes for subsets of cancer patients, including triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients. As a result, PET imaging of PD-L1 protein expression in cancer patients has been explored for noninvasive detection of PD-L1 expressing tumors as well as monitoring response to anti-PD-L1 immune checkpoint therapy. Previous studies have indicated that the in vivo stability and in vivo target detection of antibody-based radio-conjugates can be dramatically …

Simulating Electrified Powertrain Noise And Vibration Measurement Signals For Machine Learning Based Fault Diagnosis Applications, Joohyun Lee, Yangfan Liu, J Stuart Bolton, Patricia Davies
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Machine learning classification is a common method for vehicle noise and vibration (N&V) fault diagnosis which helps improve vehicle safety, comfort, and reduce maintenance cost. To improve the accuracy of classification, the model requires sufficient training data which is often expensive and time-consuming to acquire. A possible solution to resolve this limitation is to extract representative features from measurement signals and generate realistic simulated signals based on a smaller set of high-quality N&V measurement signals. A method to simulate N&V measurement signals of rotating machineries such as electrified powertrains is proposed. In its feature extraction process, tonal and broadband components …

Nonadherence is common in individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) on hydroxyurea therapy and can be observed with waning improvements in hematologic parameters or biomarkers like mean cell volume and fetal hemoglobin level over time. We modeled the impact of hydroxyurea nonadherence on longitudinal biomarker profiles. We estimated the potential nonadherent days in individuals exhibiting a drop in biomarker levels by modifying the dosing profile using a probabilistic approach. Incorporating additional nonadherence using our approach besides existing ones in the dosing profile improves the model fits. We also studied how different patterns in adherence give rise to various physiological profiles …
Frequency Reduction And Attenuation Of The Tire Air Cavity Mode Due To A Porous Lining, Kyosung Choo, Won Hong Choi, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton
Frequency Reduction And Attenuation Of The Tire Air Cavity Mode Due To A Porous Lining, Kyosung Choo, Won Hong Choi, Guochenhao Song, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
The tire air cavity mode is known to be a significant source of vehicle structure-borne road noise near 200 Hz. A porous lining placed on the inner surface of a tire is an effective countermeasure to attenuate that resonance. The two noticeable effects of such a lining are the reduction in the cavity resonance frequency and the attenuation of the air cavity mode. In this paper, through both theoretical and numerical analysis, the mechanisms underlyiing the effects of a porous lining were studied. A two-dimensional duct-shaped theoretical model and a torus-shaped numerical model were created to investigate the lined tire …

A Transfer-Matrix-Based Approach To Predicting Acoustic Properties Of A Layered System In A General, Efficient, And Stable Way, Guochenhao Song, Zhuang Mo, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Layered materials are one of the most commonly used acoustical treatments in the automotive industry, and have gained increased attention, especially owing to the popularity of electric vehicles. Here, a method to model and couple layered systems with various layer types (i.e., poro-elastic layers, solid-elastic layers, stiff panels, and fluid layers) is derived that makes it possible to stably predict their acoustical properties. In contrast with most existing methods, in which an equation system is constructed for the whole structure, the present method involves only the topmost layer and its boundary conditions at two interfaces at a time, which are …

Force Amplification At The Wheel Hub Due To The Split In The Air-Cavity Mode For A Rolling Tire, Won Hong Choi, Kyosung Choo, J Stuart Bolton
Publications of the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories
Reduction of tire/road noise has become an important issue for EVs since powertrain noise has largely been eliminated. A tire’s air-cavity mode is known to be a significant contributor to increased forces at the wheel hub, which can result in significant interior noise levels near 200 Hz. Moreover, the single natural frequency of a static, undeformed tire can separate into two neighboring frequencies for a rolling, deformed tire due to the combination of the tire’s asymmetry, and the Doppler effect resulting from the tire’s rotation. In this study, the evolution of the Doppler-related frequency split with increasing speed was observed …

The global increase in antibiotic use has led to contamination of freshwater environments. Despite the identified impacts of antibiotics on humans and wildlife, the effect of antibiotics on host–parasite life cycles in freshwater is relatively unexplored. In the current study, we utilize the trematode parasite Schistosoma mansoni, and its snail intermediate host, Biomphalaria glabrata, to investigate the influence of an ecologically relevant antibiotic concentration on the life history characteristics of both parasite and host. Our results demonstrate that antibiotics not only accelerate parasite development time, but also increase host reproduction and delay parasite-induced host castration. Using a mathematical …

Micro-Tug Device Fabrication As Platform For 3d Tissue Dynamical Construction And Magnetic Actuation, Zhuangyu Zhang
Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study
This study presents the development of a micro-tug tissue platform aimed at improving the study of tissue morphogenesis. The research focused on fabricating high-throughput devices for tissue construction and integrating magnetically responsive particles to control stress and manipulate tissue morphogenesis. The devices enable the simulation of various mechanical environments, such as hypertension in cardiomyocytes. We successfully fabricated Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micro-tug devices and their iron-containing variants, along with a magnetic field-generating device to apply variable mechanical stresses. The fabrication process transitioned from a time-consuming hydrogel casting method to a more efficient system using 3D print models and surface chemistry on PDMS …
Targeting The Warburg And Q Effect: Novel Strategy To Disrupt Cancer Metabolism, Mahmoud Adel Mohamed
Targeting The Warburg And Q Effect: Novel Strategy To Disrupt Cancer Metabolism, Mahmoud Adel Mohamed
Theses and Dissertations
One of the hallmarks of cancer cells is their altered metabolism, which serves their need to grow and proliferate. Cancer cells exhibit a marked increase in glucose consumption (Warburg effect). In addition, cancer cells also exhibit excessive uptake of glutamine, for biomass synthesis and for energy production through mitochondrial substrate level phosphorylation (glutaminolysis pathway). Glutamine metabolism is enhanced upon inhibition of glycolysis, also interference of glutamic metabolism leads to upregulation of glucose metabolism. So, simultaneous inhibition of glycolysis and glutaminolysis presents promising metabolic intervention strategy. In this study, we investigated high dose Vitamin C mechanism of action through MTT assays …

In a recent paper we used a basic decomposition property of polyanalytic functions of order 2 in one complex variable to characterize solutions of the classical ∂-problem for given analytic and polyanalytic data. Our approach suggested the study of a special reproducing kernel Hilbert space that we call the Hörmander-Fock space that will be further investigated in this paper. The main properties of this space are encoded in a specific moment sequence denoted by η= (ηn)n≥0 leading to a special entire function E(z) that is used to express the kernel function of the Hörmander-Fock space. We …
Ecological Boundaries And Constraints On Viable Eco-Evolutionary Pathways, Kyle E. Coblentz, John P. Delong
Ecological Boundaries And Constraints On Viable Eco-Evolutionary Pathways, Kyle E. Coblentz, John P. Delong
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Evolutionary dynamics are subject to constraints ranging from limitations on what is physically possible to limitations on the pathways that evolution can take. One set of evolutionary constraints, known as ‘demographic constraints’, constrain what can occur evolutionarily due to the demographic or dynamical consequences of evolution leading to conditions that make populations susceptible to extinction. These demographic constraints can limit the strength of selection or the rates of environmental change populations can experience while remaining extant and the trait values a population can express. Here we further hypothesize that the population demographic and dynamic consequences of evolution also can constrain …

The landlord sought to evict the tenant through a holdover proceeding, claiming the tenant was a licensee who refused to sign a new lease. The tenant argued a valid 99-year lease existed with rent based on income, protected under the Rent Stabilization Law. The court denied the landlord's motion to dismiss the tenant's defenses and counterclaims, finding factual issues regarding the lease terms and rent calculation that precluded summary judgment for the landlord. The court also severed the tenant's request for attorney's fees from the case.

Traffic intersections throughout the United States combine fixed, semi-actuated, and fully actuated intersections. In the case of the semi-actuated and actuated intersections, uncertainties are considered in phase duration. These uncertainties are due to car waiting queues and pedestrian crossing. Intelligent transportation systems deployed in traffic infrastructure can communicate Signal and Phase Timing messages (SPaT) to vehicles approaching intersections. In the connected and automated vehicle ecosystem, the fuel savings potential has been explored. Prior studies have predominantly focused on fixed time control for the driver. However, in the case of actuated signals, there is a different and significant challenge due to …

Introduction: Educational attainment is an important social determinant of health (SDOH) for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the association between educational attainment and all-cause and CVD mortality has not been longitudinally evaluated on a population-level in the US, especially in individuals with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). In this nationally representative study, we assessed the association between educational attainment and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular (CVD) mortality in the general adult population and in adults with ASCVD in the US.
Methods: We used data from the 2006-2014 National Death Index-linked National Health Interview Survey for adults ≥ 18 years. We generated …

In the western United States, snow accumulation, storage, and ablation affect seasonal runoff. Thus, the prediction of snowmelt is essential to improve the reliability of water supply forecasts to guide water allocation and operational decisions. The current method used at the Colorado Basin River Forecast Center (CBRFC) couples the SNOW-17 temperature index snow model and the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting (SAC-SMA) runoff model in a lumped approach. Limitations in parameter transferability and calibration requirements for changing conditions with the temperature-index model motivated this research, in which new avenues were investigated to assess and prototype the application of an energy-balance snow …

Background: With time, due to the poor knowledge on it epidemiology, the need to focus on awake bruxism as a complement of sleep studies emerged. Objective: In line with a similar recent proposal for sleep bruxism (SB), defining clinically oriented research routes to implement knowledge on awake bruxism (AB) metrics is important for an enhanced comprehension of the full bruxism spectrum, that is better assessment and more efficient management. Methods: We summarised current strategies for AB assessment and proposed a research route for improving its metrics. Results: Most of the literature focuses on bruxism in general or SB in particular, …
