Covid-19 Pandemic, Climate Change, And Conflicts On Agriculture: A Trio Of Challenges To Global Food Security, Devendra Paudel, Ram Chandra Neupane, Sailesh Sigdel, Pradip Poudel, Aditya R. Khanal

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Global food security is a worldwide concern. Food insecurity is a significant threat to poverty and hunger eradication goals. Agriculture is one of the focal points in the global policy agenda. Increases in agricultural productivity through the incorporation of technological advances or expansion of cultivable land areas have been pushed forward. However, production growth has slowed in many parts of the world due to various endemic challenges, such as decreased investment in agricultural research, lack of infrastructure in rural areas, and increasing water scarcity. Climate change adversities in agriculture and food security are increasing. Recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has severely …

Managing Refractory Status Epilepticus With Early Ketamine Administration, Ashlyn Shavers May 2023

Managing Refractory Status Epilepticus With Early Ketamine Administration, Ashlyn Shavers

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Status epilepticus is a time-sensitive neurological emergency that can be associated with severe disability and mortality. Approximately 20% of patients with status epilepticus will fail to respond to existing first and second-line therapies that act on similar receptors. There is a need for additional therapeutic options. One candidate drug, ketamine, has a novel mechanism of action and may work synergistically to terminate seizures. This study seeks to examine whether ketamine administration along with other second-line medications can reduce seizure burden in patients with status epilepticus. Using an open-label randomized clinical trial of 436 patients, we will examine the proportion of …

Providing Trauma Informed Care For Individuals On Opioid Agonist To Increase Contraception, Devon Knight May 2023

Providing Trauma Informed Care For Individuals On Opioid Agonist To Increase Contraception, Devon Knight

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Individuals with opioid use disorder report having less reproductive and sexual health knowledge and are at greater risk of unintended pregnancy than their peers. This has led to increased neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome and an increased healthcare burden, yet providing contraception and trauma informed care at treatment centers for individuals engaging in medication treatment has not been emphasized. Co-locating trauma informed reproductive and sexual health education and contraception access at substance use treatment centers provides a unique opportunity to improve knowledge and access to care for this population. We propose a randomized control trial to determine whether trauma informed care …

Spinal Fusion For Adult Degenerative Scoliosis: Rct Of Robot-Assisted Versus Navigation Guidance, Kyle Hanks May 2023

Spinal Fusion For Adult Degenerative Scoliosis: Rct Of Robot-Assisted Versus Navigation Guidance, Kyle Hanks

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Adult degenerative scoliosis is characterized by the side-to-side curvature of the spine due to the degeneration of facet joints and intervertebral discs. Life-limiting cases of adult degenerative scoliosis are corrected by spinal fusion, the success of which is determined by pedicle screw accuracy. Robot-assisted guidance has become more commonly used in spinal surgery to ensure pedicle screw placement. However, there is limited evidence for the role of robot-assisted guidance in the correction of adult degenerative scoliosis. Here, in this randomized controlled trial, we aim to investigate whether robot-assisted guidance can more consistently produce accurate pedicle screw placement than neuronavigation …

The Effect Of Neurologic Music Therapy On Speech Intelligibility In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Paulina Perez-Curiel May 2023

The Effect Of Neurologic Music Therapy On Speech Intelligibility In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Paulina Perez-Curiel

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability in children and is caused by abnormal development of or damage to the brain. Children with cerebral palsy often have speech disorders, most commonly dysarthria, due to deficits in speech-motor control. The inability to communicate effectively can lead to needs not being met, self-isolation, and an overall decrease in self-perception and quality of life. In this randomized control trial, we will evaluate whether Neurologic Music Therapy improves word-level speech intelligibility in children with Cerebral Palsy. Fifty children will be exposed to Neurologic Music Therapy and fifty children will receive standard speech therapy. …

Discovering A Pathway To Reestablishing Policing By Consent In The United States, Everett Glynn May 2023

Discovering A Pathway To Reestablishing Policing By Consent In The United States, Everett Glynn

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Policing in the 21st century faces issues with leadership and accountability within officer ranks. Police organizations increasingly resemble paramilitary organizations, from their hierarchy to their eagerness to use force. Investigations into the conduct of the Minneapolis, Chicago, and Ferguson police departments uncover widespread, paternal issues of abuse from police officers. The abuse includes paternal excessive force, discrimination, and even the social media targeting of community members of color Solutions proposed from President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, combined with a proposition to espouse Sir Robert Peel’s Principles of community policing, offer a pathway toward regaining the …

Faculty Research 2023

Common data models solve many challenges of standardizing electronic health record (EHR) data but are unable to semantically integrate all of the resources needed for deep phenotyping. Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry ontologies provide computable representations of biological knowledge and enable the integration of heterogeneous data. However, mapping EHR data to OBO ontologies requires significant manual curation and domain expertise. We introduce OMOP2OBO, an algorithm for mapping Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) vocabularies to OBO ontologies. Using OMOP2OBO, we produced mappings for 92,367 conditions, 8611 drug ingredients, and 10,673 measurement results, which covered 68-99% of concepts used in …

Hospitality: Areas That Are Effective In Creating A Desire For A Visitor To Connect To Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Brent M. Hartwig May 2023

Hospitality: Areas That Are Effective In Creating A Desire For A Visitor To Connect To Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Brent M. Hartwig

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This major applied project explores hospitality offered by the local congregation. Biblical hospitality is implicitly and explicitly commanded in scripture. Balancing the Missio Dei and two kinds of righteousness will keep us on the straight and narrow theologically when pursuing hospitality.

When churches offer hospitality, we are feeding, clothing, visiting, providing, and welcoming our neighbor. Our Redeemer wants to continue serving the community as a family-oriented, mission focused, hospitable congregation. We are doing the feeding, clothing, and providing through many efforts in the community. We are active with the local homeless shelter and crisis center. For the MAP, we wanted …

Advancements In Technology To Solve Cold Cases, Melissa Hernandez May 2023

Advancements In Technology To Solve Cold Cases, Melissa Hernandez

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the crisis of cold case investigations and discuss the advancements being made in this area over the last four decades. Technology such as CCTV cameras, DNA Phenotyping, and Genetic Genealogy have allowed many cases to be reopened but there are still not enough resources or funds to close the immense number of unsolved cases. There are also ethical concerns being addressed to allow for this technology to continue to be applicable. In some instances, it takes a combination of preexisting technology and new applications to work around previous barriers in investigations. Despite …

Cognitive Dissonance: Analysis Of The Theory, Marcus Crespo May 2023

Cognitive Dissonance: Analysis Of The Theory, Marcus Crespo

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Cognitive dissonance arises as a person experiences discomfort when their belief does not align with their behavior. Cognitive dissonance can be divided into three categories: irrelevance, dissonance, and consonance; it also can viewed in terms of what it is and what effects it produces for an individual. Studies have shown the struggles and inconsistencies that arise when people experience conflict between who they want to be and who they actually are. This paper examines cognitive dissonance at length and assesses the current theoretical models that exist to describe cognitive dissonance.

Coming To Peace In The Presence Of Wild Things: A Personal Exploration Of The Intersections Of The Environment And Faith, Hampton T. Randall May 2023

Coming To Peace In The Presence Of Wild Things: A Personal Exploration Of The Intersections Of The Environment And Faith, Hampton T. Randall

Student Scholarship

From a young age, I have felt the power that certain places have over me. Some made me feel an overwhelming sense of awe, some freedom, and some made me feel depths of peace unknown like Wendell Berry describes in the poem above. Considering my natural restlessness, a disposition that has been there since birth, the fact these places invoke a feeling of peace that washes over me speaks volumes to their power.

It wasn’t until college that I truly recognized this power of place, but since learning that fact I have sought its connection. A professor of mine gave …

Drivers And Barriers Of Social Sustainable Development And Growth Of Online Higher Education: The Roles Of Perceived Ease Of Use And Perceived Usefulness, Hemamali Tennakoon, Jared M. Hansen, George Saridakis, Mahesha Samaratunga, Joseph W. Hansen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Online and distance learning classes have been touted for the last several years as an innovation in higher education that should help improve the entrepreneurial growth mindset of students. However, the reported negative online learning experience of many college students worldwide during the COVID-19 epidemic has shown that many opportunities remain to improve the sustainable development and growth of online visual instruction practices. In this study, we outline and investigate a set of hypotheses related to the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use (from TAM) of online video instruction in higher education courses during the pandemic. We employ grounded …

Voluntary Wheel Running Promotes Resilience To The Behavioral Effects Of Unpredictable Chronic Mild Stress In Male And Female Mice., Elias Elias, Ariel Y Zhang, Abigail G White, Matthew J Pyle, Melissa T Manners May 2023

Voluntary Wheel Running Promotes Resilience To The Behavioral Effects Of Unpredictable Chronic Mild Stress In Male And Female Mice., Elias Elias, Ariel Y Zhang, Abigail G White, Matthew J Pyle, Melissa T Manners

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Besides significant benefits to physical health, exercise promotes mental health, reduces symptoms of mental illness, and enhances psychological development. Exercise can offset the impact of chronic stress, which is a major precursor to the development of mental disorders. The effects of exercise on chronic stress-induced behaviors are contradictory in preclinical studies, primarily due to the lack of data and sex-specific investigations. We sought to evaluate the effects of exercise on chronic stress-induced behavioral changes in both male and female mice. Mice were subjected to an Unpredictable Chronic Mild Stress (UCMS) paradigm with accessibility to running wheels for 2 h daily. …

White Privilege And Teacher Perceptions Of Teacher-Child Relationship Quality, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Colin M. Mcginnis, Sheng-Lun Cheng, Dwayne Ray Cormier, Natalie A. Koziol May 2023

White Privilege And Teacher Perceptions Of Teacher-Child Relationship Quality, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Colin M. Mcginnis, Sheng-Lun Cheng, Dwayne Ray Cormier, Natalie A. Koziol

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

In this study, we investigated differences in teachers’ perceptions of the teacher-child relationship from kindergarten through second grade as a function of child race and gender from the perspective of critical race theory and the cultural synchrony hypothesis. Given the extensive evidence of White privilege and anti-Black racism in the US education system, we expected that teachers, particularly White teachers, would perceive their relationships with White children more positively than with Black children. Controlling for family SES and child gender, results supported this hypothesis. Black boys had the highest risk of being perceived by teachers as having poor relationships with …

Examining The Relationship Between Legal Systems And Forensic Science: Current Issues And Proposed Solutions, Rowan Dunton May 2023

Examining The Relationship Between Legal Systems And Forensic Science: Current Issues And Proposed Solutions, Rowan Dunton

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Forensics and legal systems are often seen working together, but the relationship between the two disciplines is thornier and more complex than it may appear on the surface. This paper will examine why courtrooms struggle to accommodate forensic fields, how the nature of science can impede its utilization in court, and where legal education may fall short in educating students about the forensic sciences. After the literature is reviewed, solutions will be proposed to address each area of concern. Where possible, these solutions expand on existing infrastructure and ideas to make them easier to incorporate. Since the greater-scope issue is …

Los Angeles Homeless Encampments: East Of Mainstreet, Desarey Castellanos May 2023

Los Angeles Homeless Encampments: East Of Mainstreet, Desarey Castellanos

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Homelessness can impact a person’s ability to navigate public spaces, find employment, meet basic subsistence, and have access to essential social services. Instead, the long-term consequences of homelessness have been focused of the criminalization of unhoused people. This fieldwork analyzes the daily obstacles that individuals face east of main street in downtown Los Angeles. Although wide variation exists from different locations many challenges stemming from mental illness, substance use disorder, and ostracization from mainstream society make these circumstances increasingly difficult to navigate. All these factors are influenced by the policy environments that continuously impact these targeted populations. I will present …

Effect Of Child Abuse On Eating Disorders And Suicidal Behaviors, Hannah Lyons May 2023

Effect Of Child Abuse On Eating Disorders And Suicidal Behaviors, Hannah Lyons

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The broad range of psychological disorders and correlations with childhood upbringing has resulted in the creation of a complex connection between mental illness in adults as a result of childhood trauma. My research findings indicate that child abuse experienced during youth often leads to higher susceptibility to eating disorders in adulthood. Further, the research reflects that the type of child abuse experienced, influenced the type of eating disorder developed later in life. By researching the relationship of child abuse and eating disorders, it becomes evident that suicidal behaviors are also increased due to childhood experiences with abuse as well as …

Rights That Are Not Guaranteed: Failures Of Government Policy On Homelessness, Jeffrey Kaspraw May 2023

Rights That Are Not Guaranteed: Failures Of Government Policy On Homelessness, Jeffrey Kaspraw

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Since the 1980s, the rising number of homeless people has caused the problem to become a significant political issue. Politicians have made promises in their campaigns to solve the emergency every election cycle. Most of these campaign promises never come to fruition, and we see a continuing rise in homelessness. This paper examines the political context of housing insecurity to argue that housing is a human right, and that homelessness is a failed policy decision. Homelessness comes in four different forms that all require individual attention. The current policies aimed to address homelessness cannot be one size fits all. While …

The Politics And Piety Of Neoclassical Architecture: How Early American Elites Practiced An Old Religion To Subvert The New One, Christopher Saint-Carter May 2023

The Politics And Piety Of Neoclassical Architecture: How Early American Elites Practiced An Old Religion To Subvert The New One, Christopher Saint-Carter

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

The Western political revolutions of the 18th century established the ideals of liberty, patriotism, and democracy the United States government grounds its identity into this day. The motive of these ideals, particularly their visual manifestation in Neoclassical government architecture, remain unquestioned. This study provides a historical analysis of the psychology informing the early American elite’s choice to structure the new nation around Roman political and aesthetic standards. Chronicling the subservience inherent in Roman civic religion, as well as the internalizing nature of visual propaganda, the borrowed ancient schematic proves to be a method of de-revolutionizing the American people at …

Blood’S Evidentiary Value Based On Its Biological And Physical Properties, Samantha Boman May 2023

Blood’S Evidentiary Value Based On Its Biological And Physical Properties, Samantha Boman

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Prior to 1955, bloodstain evidence was considered to be unreliable and therefore inadmissible in a court of law. Today, DNA profiles can be derived from leukocytes, which comprise less than 1% of our total blood volume. Aside from genetic profiles, the biological and physical properties of blood can reveal a great deal to investigators. The first landmark case to utilize blood’s class characteristics reliably was in the State of Ohio vs. Samuel Sheppard. This paper explains how viscosity, surface tension, flow, velocity, and Newtonian laws of motion can be used to determine: the relative locations of victims and offenders, handedness …

The Crisis Of Femicides In Mexico, Alejandra Vela May 2023

The Crisis Of Femicides In Mexico, Alejandra Vela

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Femicides are a growing issue in Mexico. These murders are intertwined with the incompetence of authorities, poverty, corruption, and organized crime. Authorities tend to blame victims by not taking missing reports seriously, nor do they conduct searches in these urgent situations. Authorities do not have DNA databases, space in morgues, and have little forensic science training. Ways of identifying remains involve odontology, bitemarks, and saliva. These provide a means of identifying through individual characteristics and DNA. Evidence is usually mishandled and not tested, or purposely lost to stop the investigation, thus, involving corruption. Criminal organizations, known as cartels, bribe authorities …

The Effects Of Marital Rape On A Woman’S Mental Health, Brisa Victorio May 2023

The Effects Of Marital Rape On A Woman’S Mental Health, Brisa Victorio

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Marital rape has been a topic that does not receive the awareness it needs. About 14% of married women experience marital rape in the United States, and of that fourteen percent, 77% of those cases go unreported. Women experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, higher levels of anger, fear, and guilt, and begin to hate their bodies, therefore causing their self-esteem to drop. Despite the argument that women who are raped by their husbands suffer less because they have already consented to having sexual relations, it is the opposite. Marital rape victims suffer more severe psychological consequences and for a …
