Black Males’ Self-Efficacy And College Attendance: A Quantitative Study, Shawanda Beale May 2023

Black Males’ Self-Efficacy And College Attendance: A Quantitative Study, Shawanda Beale

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study will investigate the relationship between Black males’ self-efficacy, college aspirations, and college attendance. Researchers have examined self-efficacy among racial groups and gender (Richardson et al., 2013). Yet, the researcher is interested in examining factors that relate to Black males aspiring to and attending college and the role of self-efficacy in those relationships. Self-efficacy involves belief in one’s ability to accomplish goals (Bandura, 1997). Self-efficacy helps students see themselves as capable of achieving goals. Students with higher self-efficacy develop action plans to attend college, and students with lower self-efficacy are less likely to develop action plans to attend college. …

Photoisomerizable Membrane Active Peptides, Cristina Ventura May 2023

Photoisomerizable Membrane Active Peptides, Cristina Ventura

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Membrane active peptides (MAPs) bind and partition into the cell membrane thus causing permeabilization. Many α-helical membrane active peptides contain central proline residues that distinguish the hydrophobic and hydrophilic faces of the helix. The proline induces a bend that produces a helix-hinge-helix motif. Mutation of these proline residues has a significant effect on the activity of the MAP. Azobenzene is a photoisomerizable molecule that switches from its trans to cis isomer upon excitation with ultraviolet (UV) light and from its cis to trans isomer upon excitation with visible light (VL). In this work it is hypothesized that the hinge function …

Queer Not: Medieval Romance's Toll On Queerness, Kyle Gaydo May 2023

Queer Not: Medieval Romance's Toll On Queerness, Kyle Gaydo

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

How does a contemporary audience handle medieval queerness? What, exactly, constitutes medieval queerness, and how does the medieval literary genre of romance impact it? This thesis attempts to grapple with these questions, and many more, utilizing the 13th-century Old French romance Le Roman de Silence by Heldris de Cornuälle. Medieval romances are particularly fruitful for this analysis because, on one hand, the genre consistently re/turns to cisheteronormativity, and, on the other, because scholarship generally has not applied queer theory to the study of romance. Silence follows Silence, a young Englishwoman who is raised as a boy to protect her family’s …

First-Year Engagement And Intention To Return In Higher Education: A National Study Of Undecided Major Students, Jacqueline Galler May 2023

First-Year Engagement And Intention To Return In Higher Education: A National Study Of Undecided Major Students, Jacqueline Galler

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Research suggests that a student’s persistence in higher education is influenced by their academic preparation, commitments, and involvement, (Tinto 2005). Predictors including student demographics, academic preparation and commitments have shown in previously studies to affect the rate at which students persist in higher education, (Pascarella & Terenzini 2005, Astin & Oseguera 2005, Terenzini & Reason 2005). Involvement at an institution contributes to a students’ engagement and intent to persist in higher education or at a specific institution. Researchers have found that students engage in the university, academically and socially, based on how their values align with the institution, feedback they …

Digitizing The American West: Analyzing Rhetoric In Red Dead Redemption 2, Amalia Mcevoy May 2023

Digitizing The American West: Analyzing Rhetoric In Red Dead Redemption 2, Amalia Mcevoy

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

High-budget, long-form storytelling games offer dozens of hours of content for audiences to explore and learn from. Although far different from sitting and reading a book, there is a distinct connection to be made between how literature is experienced and how audiences can experience a narrative-heavy video game. Based on this connection, there are bridges to be built between video games and literature, understanding how one field can benefit from the other as well as how one field can be informed by the other. An analysis of the video game Red Dead Redemption 2 using reader response theory can illustrate …

The Old And New Divides Of Patent Law: From The Theory Of Antedation To Defining Immediately Envisageable Limited Classes, Condon, Eamon M.

Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal

Recently, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (“Federal Circuit”) ruled on a patent case involving the application of pre-America Invents Act (“AIA”) antedation and the issue of when a genus of compounds is narrowly limited enough to anticipate an individual compound found within the genus.1 On appeal, this case generally discussed why the claimant’s anticipation and obviousness claims failed.2

While the entire Federal Circuit decision will be discussed, this Comment will discuss in greater depth the reasons why antedation is no longer applicable under the AIA, and the implications of the Federal Circuit’s decision to not …

Nutrients and nutrient-like dissolved trace metals (dTMs) are essential for the functioning of marine organisms and therefore form an important part of ocean biogeochemical cycles. Here, we report on the seasonal distributions of dissolved zinc (dZn), nickel (dNi), copper (dCu), cadmium (dCd), aluminum (dAl), and nutrients on the Northeast Atlantic continental margin (Celtic Sea), which is representative for temperate shelf seas globally. Variations in surface water dTM and nutrient concentrations were mainly regulated by seasonal changes in biological processes. The stoichiometry of dTMs (especially for dCu and dZn) and nutrients on the continental shelf was additionally affected by fluvial inputs. …

Compensatory endocytosis keeps the membrane surface area of secretory cells constant following exocytosis. At chemical synapses, clathrin-independent ultrafast endocytosis maintains such homeostasis. This endocytic pathway is temporally and spatially coupled to exocytosis; it initiates within 50 ms at the region immediately next to the active zone where vesicles fuse. However, the coupling mechanism is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that filamentous actin is organized as a ring, surrounding the active zone at mouse hippocampal synapses. Assuming the membrane area conservation is due to this actin ring, our theoretical model suggests that flattening of fused vesicles exerts lateral compression in the plasma …

Evaluating The Environmental Sustainability Of Florida’S Primary Brownfield Remediation Technique, Stephanie Bekampis May 2023

Evaluating The Environmental Sustainability Of Florida’S Primary Brownfield Remediation Technique, Stephanie Bekampis

Master's Projects and Capstones

Florida has been designated as a hotspot for sea level rise by NASA (Hamlington et al., 2022) and is likely to experience more frequent and severe storm events (EPA, 2020), increasing pollutant mobility in contaminated developed land, such as Brownfield sites (Crawford et al., 2022). Disadvantaged communities and minorities are more vulnerable to the effects of sea level rise and storms surges, and they are more likely to live in proximity to Brownfields (Marcantonio et al., 2020; U.S. EPA, Office of Land and Emergency Management, 2021). To mitigate this impact, Brownfield remediation is necessary; however, traditional methods to remediate Brownfield …

Investment Without Displacement: A Study Of The Better Neighborhoods, Same Neighbors Initiative In East Oakland, Jeremy Mack

Master's Projects and Capstones

This Capstone interrogates the teleology of neoliberal community development – does investment in historically disinvested working-class urban neighborhoods inevitably lead to gentrification? Learning from the Better Neighborhoods, Same Neighbors Initiative (BNSN) in Deep East Oakland as a case study, the Capstone uses a Transformative Justice (TJ) framework to make the case for an ethical approach to community development: one in which working-class urban residents are the authors and architects of their own neighborhood’s future, community needs are centered, and long-term residents are able to continue to age-in place. This approach utilizes the lens of Black-centered community development, integrating an understanding …
