Mapping The Evidence On Assessment Of Fitness To Work At Heights: A Scoping Review Protocol, Lyndsey Swart, Nicolaas Claassen, Tania Buys May 2023

Mapping The Evidence On Assessment Of Fitness To Work At Heights: A Scoping Review Protocol, Lyndsey Swart, Nicolaas Claassen, Tania Buys

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction Falls from height are a leading cause of serious injury and fatality globally. In South Africa, work at heights is regulated by occupational health and safety legislation, which places responsibility on employers to ensure their workers are fit for high-risk work. There is however no formal procedure or consensus on how fitness to work at heights should be assessed. This paper presents an a priori protocol for a scoping review that seeks to identify and map the current evidence base around the assessment of fitness to work at heights. It forms the initial phase of a PhD study aimed …

Comparing True Maternal And Paternal Care In Pair-Living, Ex-Situ Varecia Rubra (Red Variegated Lemurs) Contextualized Among Other Primate Cooperative Breeders, Payton Elizabeth Zuver

Dissertations and Theses

Observations of variegated lemurs in the wild have revealed a cooperative breeding strategy including extensive male care to young, primarily in the form of infant guarding. This thesis presents an analysis of the first quantitative assessment of true paternal and true maternal care from pair-housed, ex-situ red variegated lemurs (V. rubra) housed at the Lemur Conservation Foundation's Myakka City Lemur Reserve in western Florida. This study aims to answer specific research questions: How do paternal and maternal care compare when resources are abundant, and paternity is certain? Is male care instinctual? Is it driven by energetic necessity? If …

Gm1 Ganglioside As A Disease-Modifying Therapeutic For Parkinson’S Disease: A Multi-Functional Glycosphingolipid That Targets Multiple Parkinson’S Disease-Relevant Pathogenic Mechanisms, Jay S. Schneider May 2023

Gm1 Ganglioside As A Disease-Modifying Therapeutic For Parkinson’S Disease: A Multi-Functional Glycosphingolipid That Targets Multiple Parkinson’S Disease-Relevant Pathogenic Mechanisms, Jay S. Schneider

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions of patients worldwide. Many therapeutics are available for treating PD symptoms but there is no disease-modifying therapeutic that has been unequivocally shown to slow or stop the progression of the disease. There are several factors contributing to the failure of many putative disease-modifying agents in clinical trials and these include the choice of patients and clinical trial designs for disease modification trials. Perhaps more important, however, is the choice of therapeutic, which for the most part, has not taken into account the multiple and complex pathogenic mechanisms and processes involved …

Shifting Gears: - The Expected Post-Transplant Survival (Epts) Usefulness In The Era Of Continuous Distribution- Examination Of The United Network Of Organ Sharing (Unos) Database 2000-2020, Vaughn Whittaker, Vaughn Easton Whittaker

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

The allocation of organs is a constantly evolving area of transplantation. The latest iteration of this process is a move toward continuous distribution of organs. This process considers dynamic factors instead of static constraints that box patients into certain categories. The expected post-transplant survival of patients is one of these dynamic factors that will be included in the assessment of patients' place in a continuous distribution allocation process. However, the predictive value of this construct is questionable, given that it uses only four factors (age, diabetes diagnosis, years on dialysis, and previous transplant) to represent complex patients who are on …

Roleplaying Games And Performance, Benjamin Joseph Munise May 2023

Roleplaying Games And Performance, Benjamin Joseph Munise

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Roleplaying Games and Performance calls to mind popular appearances of roleplaying games on stage and screen, like Stranger Things or Qui Nguyen’s popular play, She Kills Monsters. However, inquiry into the way roleplaying games appear in these titles reveals the way they have been instrumentalized to serve the ends of their respective mediums. Scholars writing about roleplaying games also tend to leap straight to analyses of video games, with many words spilled over World of Warcraft while a live site of analog performance sits before them. In this work, I address the tabletop roleplaying game as a medium with …

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Adult Coping Inventory, Kristen Ashley Hollas May 2023

Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Adult Coping Inventory, Kristen Ashley Hollas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There are few psychometrically sound measures that assess coping in adults. For example, a widely used measure of coping, the COPE, has highly unstable sub-scales and was developed using a homogenous sample (Lyne & Roger, 2000). Because of these limitations, the Adult Coping Inventory (ACI) was developed. The ACI is a 57-item measure that contains five factors including Problem Solving, Mindfulness, Maladaptive Coping, Social Support and Avoidance. Initial reliability and validity analyses demonstrate good construct, concurrent and incremental validity. The current study involved conducting a confirmatory factor analysis to confirm the factor structure of the ACI. The participant sample consisted …

Application-Driven Optimized Sla-Aware Path Selection For Collaboration Applications, Dave Zacks, Paul B Giralt, Prapanch Ramamoorthy, Thomas Szigeti

Defensive Publications Series

Currently, applications are at the mercy of a network’s infrastructure for the selection of a path within a network environment where more than one path exists between a source and a destination. Too often, the network infrastructure elements are unaware of an application’s requirements, or are aware of them in only a very rudimentary way. This situation is particularly dire for collaboration applications, which often have the most stringent requirements for path characteristics including delay, jitter, and packet loss. Techniques are presented herein that move the point of control for path selection to a collaboration application through a lightweight, in-band …

“Please Stop Bringing Up Family Life, We’Re Here To Talk About Science”: Engaging Undergraduate Women And Women Of Color In Stem Through A Participatory Action Research Project, Batsheva R. Guy, Tziporah Feldman May 2023

“Please Stop Bringing Up Family Life, We’Re Here To Talk About Science”: Engaging Undergraduate Women And Women Of Color In Stem Through A Participatory Action Research Project, Batsheva R. Guy, Tziporah Feldman

i.e.: inquiry in education

Stark underrepresentation exists of undergraduate women enrolled in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degree programs. Although women have outnumbered men in undergraduate enrollment for over 30 years, these numbers do not apply to the sciences. Previous research shows that low self-efficacy is a barrier and high self-confidence is a strength for women in STEM. Participatory Action Research (PAR) addresses both sides of this issue by (1) answering the questions that exist about women in STEM and undergraduate research and (2) providing women in STEM with research experience. Thus, PAR not only helps solve the problem of self-efficacy that affects …

Reframing And The Power Of Resistance: A Case Of Self-Reflection, Abdelnasser Hussein May 2023

Reframing And The Power Of Resistance: A Case Of Self-Reflection, Abdelnasser Hussein

i.e.: inquiry in education

This article is a reflection on my personal experience as a practitioner in the field of educational leadership when resistance resulted from restructuring the dismissal procedure in my school. This reflection is primarily drawing upon the four-frame approach of Bolman and Deal (2017) in their book, Reframing Organizations: Artistry, Choice, and Leadership. The article explores the full description of the case, an analysis focused on me and my understanding of the case, and a reframing process based on the premise Bolman and Deal offer in their book. Throughout my self-reflection on this case, I develop options that add choice …

Visibility Of School Leadership: Building Trust, Jessica Brooke Jack May 2023

Visibility Of School Leadership: Building Trust, Jessica Brooke Jack

i.e.: inquiry in education

This mixed methods study investigated teacher perceptions of the relationship between school leader visibility and teacher trust in that leader in two private Christian elementary and secondary schools of less than 1,000 students in California. A review of current available literature on this topic revealed three key themes: the positive effect a trusted leader has on an organization and school, the positive effect leader visibility has on building trust in leader-follower relationships, and the need for frequency and quality of leader visibility to build trust. In this study, three key themes emerged from an original survey and one-on-one, in-depth teacher …

Pre-Service English As A Foreign Language Teachers’ Awareness Of The Pragmatic Aspect Of Language, Gamze Erdem Cosgun

i.e.: inquiry in education

The objective of this survey study was to explore pre-service English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ opinions concerning the pragmatic aspect of language and their awareness of certain pragmatics concepts. Thirty-three pre-service EFL teachers from a state university in Türkiye participated in the study voluntarily. As a data-collection instrument, a survey with Likert scale questions and a few additional questions was used. Results of the descriptive and frequency analysis demonstrate that the pre-service EFL teachers understood the value of pragmatics in language teaching and learning since they mentioned communicative competence as an important aspect of language use. They also …

Developing Leadership Dispositions For Preparing Urban School Leaders In Chronically Low-Performing Schools, Carol Burg, Stuart I. Carrier, James L. Schott, Daniel C. Buckman

i.e.: inquiry in education

This study originated as an institutionally sponsored research residency conducted using utilization-focused evaluation (Patton, 2008) to investigate the nature of dispositional changes in candidates pursuing National Louis University’s M.Ed. and Ed.S. degrees leading to educational leadership (EDL) state certification in one large urban school district in a Southern state. The EDL program organized learning objectives intending to develop a specific knowledge base, an operational competency set, and, as this study’s focus, leadership dispositions related to preparing assistant principals and principals to lead effectively in chronically low-performing (CLP) schools. The inquiry cross-analyzed data at the intersection of the graduate program’s disposition-related …

Searching For A Dialogic Pedagogy With More-Than-The-Human Beings In A Teacher Education Classroom: “I Make My Way To The Sun...”, Olga Shugurova May 2023

Searching For A Dialogic Pedagogy With More-Than-The-Human Beings In A Teacher Education Classroom: “I Make My Way To The Sun...”, Olga Shugurova

i.e.: inquiry in education

In this reflective poetic narrative inquiry, I explore a possibility, or rather a search, for dialogic pedagogy with a focus on more-than-human beings in my teacher education classroom. I am curious to learn from my students’ lived experience with my experimental and environmental dialogic activity and ask: What does a dialogue with more-than-human others mean to teacher candidates? My inquiry reveals that these dialogues emerge from the unique, ontological place of being as the poetic and reflective encounter with nature. Yet the concept of nature remains a mystery that resists definitions. More specifically, students’ notes reveal two main themes of …

Kritik Terhadap Struktur Ilmu Hukum Menurut Paul Scholten, E. Fernando M. Manullang May 2023

Kritik Terhadap Struktur Ilmu Hukum Menurut Paul Scholten, E. Fernando M. Manullang

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan

Paul Scholten, a prominent Dutch legal scholar, explains some thoughts in one of his chief article: De Structuur der recthwetenshcap. Essentially it describes some accounts on how legal relations may exist, which he thinks such relations can be both logic and illogical. Scholten even furthermore reiterates such paradigm, the dualism of logic and illogical, also underlies the scientific nature of legal science (jurisprudence). Finally, he also explores on the relations between language and jurisprudence. His all accounts leave some critical notes, as it has some internal contradictions in connection of, as what critical legal theory says, the presence of reifications …
