The Cuban Missile Crisis At Sea—Avoidance Of Nuclear War Not Left To Chance, Theodore Voorhees
The Cuban Missile Crisis At Sea—Avoidance Of Nuclear War Not Left To Chance, Theodore Voorhees
Naval War College Review
Many contradictions emerge from the nine published accounts of the confrontation between the Soviet submarine B-59 and American antisubmarine-warfare units during the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962. Assessing those accounts reveals that no participant should be anointed as “the man who saved the world,” and that the peaceful conclusion of the confrontation should not be attributed to good luck.

“Confining The Enemy”—Halford Mackinder’S Theory Of Containment And The Conflict In Ukraine, Michael Hochberg, Leonard Hochberg
Naval War College Review
Before George Kennan outlined his vision of containment, Halford Mackinder articulated a vision of maritime geostrategic logic that prioritized some geographic locations over others. Because Mackinder’s writings have been marshaled to assess the ongoing U.S. commitment to Ukraine, it is important to appreciate how his theory applies to the current crisis.

The European Union’S Quest To Become A Global Maritime-Security Provider, Christian Bueger, Timothy Edmunds
Naval War College Review
The European Union (EU) seeks to become a global maritime-security actor, yet strategic challenges influence its maritime-security strategy process. Is there a distinctive and coherent EU approach to global maritime security, and how should the EU address the growing range of maritime challenges, including the intensification of militarized competition in the Indo-Pacific?

Smart Balancers Kill Many Birds With Few Stones—Sino-Russian Security Cooperation In The Maritime Domain, Maximilian Ernst, Tongfi Kim
Naval War College Review
Minimizing the costs and risks of balancing is crucial for a coalition facing stronger opponents—such as China and Russia facing the United States and its partners. The motives of Sino-Russian security cooperation should be understood within the context of a full spectrum of balancing strategies in international relations and the relatively lower risk of escalation in the maritime domain.
The Future Of Precision-Strike Warfare—Strategic Dynamics Of Mature Military Revolutions, John D. Maurer
The Future Of Precision-Strike Warfare—Strategic Dynamics Of Mature Military Revolutions, John D. Maurer
Naval War College Review
The precision conventional revolution, which yielded early U.S. military successes, is entering a more mature phase. Future great-power wars could tend toward protracted conflicts as superpowers seek to coerce each other without escalating to nuclear warfare. The proliferation and massing of precision conventional weapons may worsen such conventional military stalemates, with each side eviscerating the other’s power-projection capabilities.

Asking for directions is one of the most interactive daily activities. Although, there are times when miscommunication occurs as most people are keener on visual competence than auditory learning. Various institutions address this issue with a static map. However, static maps can be inadequate; hence, according to most studies, the presence of a digital map is essential for better guidance in situating certain places. This study aims to develop a digital map guide, test its technical qualities by IT experts and prospective users, and determine the relationship between their responses. The researcher used available smartphones to capture the necessary images; …

Following the constant technological developments in the 21st century, e-marketing emerged and became a staple component of corporate globalization. The prevalence of the Internet resulted in more opportunities for businesses to conduct their sales, and as such, it is believed that the application of e-marketing mix strategies, which are commonly referred to as the 7ps of Marketing, have a significant effect on the competitive advantage of selected clothing retailers in Metro Manila. The study is based on a modified framework for e-marketing mix consisting of product, price, place, promotion, physical evidence, people, and process, as each element of the framework …

In recent decades, businesses have used online spaces to promote their products, services, and brand image. One such example is TikTok, a video-sharing platform that achieved critical success in 2018 and experienced an influx of users during the pandemic's peak (Geyser, 2021). Thus, the study aims to investigate the relationship between the antecedents of customer engagement and the purchase intention of DLSU-M ABM students on TikTok advertisements. Using a purposive sampling technique, the researchers gathered fifty-five (55) responses from TikTok users studying under the DLSU-M ABM strand. To analyze this data, the study employed a quantitative research design. Two (2) …

Microplastic consumption is a pressing global issue, yet it has received limited attention in the Philippines. This lack of awareness may lead to health problems among Filipinos, as microplastics can contain harmful substances that disrupt human processes and cause diseases. To address this, a study was conducted in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, focusing on microplastic properties in Scylla serrata production. Samples were collected and examined under a light compound microscope, while in-person observations and interviews with mangrove crab growers provided data on the crabs' environment. Of the 120 samples, 30 mangrove crabs were analyzed, with each crab having four subsamples. Results …

The Philippines is a disaster-prone country that frequently experiences flooding. Heavy rains, water congestion, and impassable flooded roads are prominent within the area, especially in urban streets and communities in low-lying areas. These circumstances are usually delayed in dissemination and cause further accidents and damage due to the lack of advanced and real-time alerts. Therefore, this study aims to create an initial testing and design of a portable ultrasonic flood level monitoring system that innovates mounting and portability features for affected communities to measure water levels before, during, and after floods to mitigate casualties by alerting the public of the …

Aedes aegypti, the primary vector of the endemic Dengue Fever (DENV) has always been a vector of concern in the Philippines due to its infectivity and known resistance against major commercial insecticide compositions. This challenge requires an effective natural-based alternative, specifically the Canarium ovatum (Pili) exocarp, an unexplored biowaste that exhibits strong larvicidal potentials for its phytochemical and bioactive compositions. This research sought to determine the efficacy of C. ovatum pulp oil extract as a natural larvicide against A. aegypti. Five (5) different C. ovatum pulp oil concentrations in triplicates were tested against the positive control (Temephos) in the mortality …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
This study aims to assess the correlation strength between parenting styles and introversion/extraversion (IE) in youngsters. Previous studies popularized the predictive role of parenting in children's social skills and development, but less data is shown on its correlation with personality traits. The research collected 113 survey responses from 397 Miriam College Nuvali high school students. The researchers utilized Pearson’s correlation to determine the correlation coefficient and analysis of variance for data significance. The correlation coefficient for each parenting style with both introversion-extraversion traits averaged 0.085, with all coefficients being less than 0.2. This dictates a relatively low correlation between parenting …

Trimethoprim (TMP) as an aquatic pollutant poses ecological and human health-related risks as the antibiotic is highly soluble in water, resistant to biodegradation, and induces moderate chronic toxicity. Its prolonged presence in the environment resulted in certain bacteria strains developing antibiotic resistance. Since there is currently a relatively high wastewater residual concentration of the antibiotic, traditional wastewater treatment methods are ineffective at getting rid of it. Thus, a viable method for the removal of TMP is through Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), which utilize radicals such as sulfate radicals to react with organic pollutants. As part of the study, the degradation …

The Duterte administration, which lasted from 2016 to 2022, incited a multitude of human rights violations against the marginalized groups of Philippine society, namely women, and the poor. It was discovered and established through literature that these injustices can primarily be attributed to the former president’s hypermasculinity, a manifestation of hegemonic masculinity in the contemporary era. Given this, this research seeked to investigate the aforementioned phenomenon and communicate this using art, more specifically through the Aswang folklore and visual communication, to make these information accessible, especially to the masses; to foster social consciousness among its audience as a means to …
