Image Segmentation With Human-In-The-Loop In Automated De-Caking Process For Powder Bed Additive Manufacturing, Vincent Opare Addo Asare-Manu
Theses and Dissertations
Additive manufacturing (AM) becomes a critical technology that increases the speed and flexibility of production and reduces the lead time for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing. One of the major bottlenecks in further increasing its productivity lies around its post-processing procedures. This work focuses on tackling a critical and inevitable step in powder-bed additive manufacturing processes, i.e., powder cleaning or de-caking. Pressing concerns can be raised with human involvement when performing this task manually. Therefore, a robot-driven automatic powder cleaning system could be an alternative to reducing time consumption and increasing safety for AM operators. However, since the color and surface texture …
Soil Moisture Dynamics In Cover Cropping Systems: From Local To Global Scales, Manish Gautam
Soil Moisture Dynamics In Cover Cropping Systems: From Local To Global Scales, Manish Gautam
Theses and Dissertations
Cover cropping systems, which have gained recognition for their ability to enhance soil health and promote sustainability are also associated with potential risks related with declining soil moisture and pose a dilemma for farmers considering the adoption of cover crops in water deficit semi-arid settings worldwide. To address this pressing issue, we conducted a participatory cover cropping trial in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) region, encompassing four different farms and supplemented this experiment with a meta-analysis to answer our soil moisture and climate parameters and quantify the impact of cover crops on soil moisture levels. The findings revealed that …

Tamaulipan Thornforest Restoration: Factors Influencing Restoration Outcomes And Impacts Of Cover Crops During Replanting, Jerald T. Garrett
Theses and Dissertations
Though the rate of deforestation has slowed in recent years, it remains a primary cause of land cover change within forest ecosystems. The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas (LRGV) has lost nearly 95% of its native thornforest since the early 1900’s due to agricultural and urban expansion. The focus of this study is to assess the current vegetative state of restored thornforest sites located in the eastern LRGV and to evaluate the use of cover crops during replanting of native seedlings. Our assessment of restored thornforest sites revealed actively restored sites demonstrated higher overall averages of richness, abundance, and diversity …
The Universality Of God In Amo’S Oracles And Creation: A Historical-Critical Approach Within A Catholic Context, Alexandra Bochte
The Universality Of God In Amo’S Oracles And Creation: A Historical-Critical Approach Within A Catholic Context, Alexandra Bochte
Master's Theses (2009 -)
In the Old Testament, the Israelite nation is identified as a chosen people of God and in a covenantal relationship with him. This thesis will argue that the Noahide covenantal relationship extends to more than just the Israelites such that all creation is in a covenant with the universal God. This is supported through an exploration of Ancient Near Eastern literature and its similarities with biblical stories. Exegetical analyses of Psalms and prophetic biblical literature will further demonstrate God’s universality and will elucidate what it means to be in a covenantal relationship with God. When there is relationship there must …
Creep Resistance And Microstructure In Binary Aluminum Cerium Alloy Produced By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Jillian Ann Stinehart
Creep Resistance And Microstructure In Binary Aluminum Cerium Alloy Produced By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Jillian Ann Stinehart
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Currently, the only commercially available aluminum alloy for additive manufacturing (AM) is AlSi10Mg, which is not suitable for high temperature applications. Al-Ce based alloys have been shown to be highly printable, cost-efficient alloys. Compared to cast Al-Ce alloys, the eutectic features are refined (<1μm), which give AM Al-10Ce favorable strength and ductility at room temperature. The low diffusivity and solubility of cerium in aluminum improve the retention of mechanical properties at high temperatures. In order to quantify the effect of cerium on the thermal stability of AM aluminum and show its suitability for high-temperature applications, Al-10Ce was creep tested between 60-77% of its absolute melting temperature. The creep performance of AM Al-10Ce was favorable compared to that of cast binary Al-Ce and AM AlSi10Mg and was comparable to that of cast ternary Al-Ce alloys. The stress exponent, n, was approximately 1 in the low stress regime and 5-7 in the high stress regime. The activation energy was 231kJ/mol. In comparison, both cast binary Al-Ce and AM AlSi10Mg have higher stress exponents and lower activation energies, showing AM Al-10Ce to be more creep resistant. After creep testing, slight grain coarsening was observed, while grain orientation remained unchanged. The melt pool boundaries (MPBs) faded in appearance after creep testing, and the number of columnar grains decreased.

These changes hold important clinical implications for the development, maintenance and treatment of malocclusions. Methods : A sample of 96 untreated Class I and Class II subjects, with a total of 611 cephalograms was drawn from the archives of the University of Michigan …
Ecumenical Traditions: Byzantine And Franciscan Theology In Dialogue, Gino G. Grivetti
Ecumenical Traditions: Byzantine And Franciscan Theology In Dialogue, Gino G. Grivetti
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This thesis investigates the convergences between the Byzantine and Franciscan traditions in the areas of hagiography, mysticism, and dogmatic theology. Historically marginalized in the neo-scholastic synthesis of the nineteenth century, the closeness of Patriarch Bartholomew (b. 1940) and Pope Francis (b. 1936) has symbolized the significance of this dialogue in the modern ecumenical movement. The anonymous bios of St. Nilus of Rossano (d. 1005) and the first vita of St. Francis of Assisi (d. 1226) by Thomas of Celano (d. 1260) are representative of the hagiographical traditions of the Italo-Byzantine monks and the early Franciscans. The traditions came into direct …

Reducing Porosity In Lpbf Ti-6al-4v By Parameter Optimization And Low Temperature Hot Isostatic Pressing Cycle, Penn Rawn
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Powder bed based additive manufacturing has advantages in its ability to make specialized parts with complex geometries. Unfortunately, components made through such processes of suffer from manufacturing defects including porosity. To study pore formation and removal, specimens of Ti-6Al-4V were built at varied levels of laser power, travel speed, hatch spacing, and layer thickness to obtain a variety of initial defect populations. The specimens were then subjected to a hot isostatic pressure (HIP) at 850 °C and 200 MPa to evaluate the low temperature high pressure (LTHP) cycle’s ability to remove pores. Image analysis was used to estimate the relative …

It appears the Maharlika Investment Fund (MIF) is a fait accompli. As we write, our finance officials are in New York and Toronto, pitching the MIF to international bankers and representatives of Middle East sovereign wealth funds. This means once President Marcos, Jr. affixes his signature, a newly-created Maharlika Investment Corporation (MIC) will pool, before the year is over, PhP 75 billion in seed capital from the LandBank and Development Bank of the Philippines. With a further PhP 50 billion plus two full years of dividends from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), its nine directors, all presidential appointees, will …

Modelling Climate Litigation Risk For (Re)Insurers, Martin Lockman
Modelling Climate Litigation Risk For (Re)Insurers, Martin Lockman
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
In response to the growing threat of climate change, the insurance industry has made significant investments in modelling and quantifying physical climate risks. However, the emerging risk of climate litigation has proven particularly difficult to model. In 2015 Mark Carney, then-Governor of the Bank of England and Chairman of the Financial Stability Board, warned that climate litigation poses “long-tail risks” for insurers that may be “significant, uncertain and non-linear.” Since that warning, the number of climate-related cases has more than doubled, and the scope and financial significance of climate litigation has become increasingly clear. However, insurers and regulators still struggle …

Excitatory Dorsal Lateral Prefrontal Cortex Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Increases Social Anxiety, Anthony Minervini, Adriana Lavarco, Samantha Zorns, Ruth Propper, Christos Suriano, Julian Paul Keenan
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Social exclusion refers to the experience of rejection by one or more people during a social event and can induce pain-related sensations. Cyberball, a computer program, is one of the most common tools for analyzing social exclusion. Regions of the brain that underlie social pain include networks linked to the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Specifically, self-directed negative socially induced exclusion is associated with changes in DLPFC activity. Direct manipulation of this area may provide a better understanding of how the DLPFC can influence the perception of social exclusion and determine a causal role of the DLPFC. Transcranial magnetic stimulation …
Latine Youth's Intersecting Identities And Mental Health Outcomes: Examining The Mediating Role Of Family Functioning, Anne Malkoff
Latine Youth's Intersecting Identities And Mental Health Outcomes: Examining The Mediating Role Of Family Functioning, Anne Malkoff
Dissertations (1934 -)
In the existing literature base, the mechanisms by which a bicultural identity leads to more positive mental health outcomes among Latine youth are not yet clearly understood. The present study aimed to clarify these relationships by examining family functioning as a possible mediating variable between Latine youth’s cultural identity-related processes (i.e., bicultural identity integration, bicultural stress, ethnic identity, parent-child acculturation differences) and mental health outcomes (i.e., internalizing/externalizing symptoms and overall well-being). Participants included Latine youth (ages 9-12; n = 78) and their parents (n = 70) who were primarily recruited to participate in the study via Facebook over the course …
Existential Thomism And The Ecstasy Of The Sexed Body, Kathleen Cavender-Mccoy
Existential Thomism And The Ecstasy Of The Sexed Body, Kathleen Cavender-Mccoy
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation assesses the relevance and significance of Norris Clarke’s existential Thomism to critiques of John Paul II’s theology of the body. I argue that using existential Thomism as a basis for Catholic metaphysics opens the door for an existential theology of the sexed body, a theology of the individual on a unique spiritual journey towards union with God which amends, expands, and nuances the existing theology of the ecstatic body developed by John Paul II. Chapter One situates my thesis within its historical context by tracing philosophical and theological developments which inform the current status of embodied sexual difference …
Exploring Validation And Success Among First-Generation College Students In First-Year Writing, Jenna Green
Exploring Validation And Success Among First-Generation College Students In First-Year Writing, Jenna Green
Dissertations (1934 -)
This qualitative case study examines connections between student writing and student success, specifically among first-generation college students, a growing student population who are less likely to graduate college than their multigenerational peers. First-generation college students are more likely to come from working-class, low-income backgrounds, identify as racial or ethnic minorities, live at home and/or have significant family and work responsibilities (Bond, 2019; Engle & Tinto, 2008). Due to the confluence of barriers many face, first-generation college students exhibit higher attrition rates, contributing to persisting inequities in higher education. Leveraging Rendón’s (1994) validation theory, this study explored how first-generation college students …
Breathing Around The Clock: Novel Circadian And Light-Driven Mechanisms That Govern Daily Breathing Behavior In Mice, Aaron Andrew Jones
Breathing Around The Clock: Novel Circadian And Light-Driven Mechanisms That Govern Daily Breathing Behavior In Mice, Aaron Andrew Jones
Dissertations (1934 -)
Breathing, like many physiological functions, exhibits a daily rhythm in mammals that coincides with periods of wakefulness and increased metabolic activity. Dysregulation of daily breathing rhythms has been implicated in a variety of respiratory diseases with time-specific symptomatology including sleep apnea, asthma, chronic pulmonary disease, sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, and COVID-19. While the daily rhythm in breathing is regulated by the endogenous circadian clock in the brain, the underlying physiological and cellular mechanisms modulating daily breathing behavior remain largely unknown. Light is the most potent synchronizer of the circadian system in mammals and is likely the principal driver of …

Neural networks are often very large models with millions …
Photophysical And Photocatalytic Properties Of Covalent Organic Frameworks, Daniel Streater H.
Photophysical And Photocatalytic Properties Of Covalent Organic Frameworks, Daniel Streater H.
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation is most interested in how a class of materials known as covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be designed to capture photon energy to initiate chemical reactions. Different COF designs change how long the energy is held, how it migrates, and how it is dispersed – and these differences can be used to change their performance as artificial photosynthesis platforms. Thus, it is helpful to have an informative discussion about the processes behind natural photosynthesis, that is, nature’s light harvesting strategies and photocatalytic schemes (Section 1.2) and will lead into an introduction of COFs and why they possess unique …

RNA structures and RNA-protein interactions are studied as potential drug targets, biomarkers in cancer, and can be administered as vaccines. The cancer associated HOTAIR (HOX transcript antisense RNA) exists in higher vertebrates and interacts with chromatin remodeling enzymes. We examined the thermodynamic folding properties and structural propensity of the exonic regions of HOTAIR using biophysical methods and NMR spectroscopy. Different exons of HOTAIR contain variable degrees of structural heterogeneity. We identify one exonic region, exon 4, that adopts a stable and compact fold under low magnesium concentrations. Close agreement of NMR spectroscopy and chemical probing confirm conserved base pair interactions …
A Trait-Based Approach To Explain Plant Coexistence In Tropical Forests, Felipe Nery Arantes Mello
A Trait-Based Approach To Explain Plant Coexistence In Tropical Forests, Felipe Nery Arantes Mello
Dissertations (1934 -)
Ecology seeks to explain the mechanisms that allow multiple species to coexist in the same habitat without one species outcompeting or driving others to extinction. Niche differentiation is a mechanism that has been proposed to allow species to coexist through specialization on different resources or habitats, which reduces competition and the probability of competitive exclusion. Species can reduce competition by using different combinations of resources and thus partitioning available resources in time and space. Differences in resource use is hypothesized to be influenced by species’ morphological and physiological adaptations, known as functional traits. Links between functional traits and abiotic factors …

Scope And Mechanistic Studies Of Ruthenium Catalyzed C-C And C-N Bond Activation Reactions, Dulanjali Thennakoon
Dissertations (1934 -)
Transition metal catalyzed selective C–C and C–N bond activation reactions emerged as an effective synthetic tool in organic chemistry. Reorganization of these bond connections allows access to complex molecular scaffolds from readily available starting materials which are immensely useful for organic synthesis of pharmaceutical agents. While enormous progress has been achieved to date, major challenges still remain in desigining broad applicable catalytic bond activation methods. The well-defined cationic Ru–H complex with a benzoquinone ligand was found to be an effective catalytic system for the deaminative coupling reaction of enones with amines which enable regioselective cleavage of unstrained Cα–Cβ bond of …

Part I draws from Edmund Husserl’s notion of the “historical a priori” and from seminal decolonial thinker Anibal Quijano’s formulation of “coloniality” to offer a framework for what I call the “coloniality of history.” Chapter 1 draws from Husserl’s and from contemporary analyses of the “historical a priori” as a historical horizon of conceivability for subject and truth formation. Chapter 2 brings this phenomenological analysis to interpret Quijano’s formulation of “coloniality” as a historical horizon of conceivability and to offer a framework for what I call the “coloniality of history.” This framework shows …

It is estimated that by the year 2050, the human population will extend to 9.7 billion and therefore the demand for food will increase. It is important to find ways to maintain production of critical crops, like rice, to match the demand. Climate change affects crop productivity as it is the reason for extreme warm or cold weather fluctuations. Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) generally is grown in tropical and subtropical regions and thus, is sensitive to cold temperatures. This study hypothesized two strategies could improve growth and cold tolerance of rice plants: (1) use of plant growth promoting bacteria …

The conserved chromatin-remodeling enzyme, Lysine-Specific histone1/2 Demethylase 1 (LSD1) primarily demethylates Histone H3K4me , acting as a transcriptional repressor. It plays pivotal roles in various physiological processes including cancer and interacts with many regulatory proteins, non-coding RNAs, and small metabolites. However, little biochemical information is known about LSD1’s N-terminal intrinsically disordered region (IDR) and how LSD1 interacts with various biomolecules in the context of nucleosome. I present evidence that the IDR of LSD1, containing multiple post translational modifications (PTMs) and a nuclear localization signal (NLS), can act as a reversible competitive autoinhibitor of LSD1’s activity. This autoinhibition can be relieved …
