Trust between group members has many implications for how well a group performs. In this study, we predict perceived trustworthiness of group members when there are subversive group members. We collected multimodal verbal and nonverbal data from a group interaction experiment. During the interaction, we periodically surveyed the group members about their perceptions of trustworthiness of other group members. We used this data to model the relationship between observable behavior and perceptions of trustworthiness. We report the most predictive features and describe them in the context of existing literature on verbal and nonverbal correlates of trust. This research advances the …

This study explored effects of socioeconomic status (SES) and home affordances on motor, language, and cognitive development in children with motor delays; it also tested whether SES and home affordances moderate the effect of the novel START-Play early intervention or motor delay severity on development. Participants were 112 children (64 males, 36.6% low SES) with motor delays tested longitudinally across 12 months (baseline age: Mean = 10.80, SD = 2.59 months). The results showed that more advanced motor, language, and cognitive development of children with motor delays is associated with high SES and enriched home affordances. Importantly, SES and home …

Herein, Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopies (SERS) were successfully employed to establish the chemical interactions of citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs, 10–15 nm) with human red blood cells (RBCs). The Raman/SERS spectra offered spectral evidence for the cellular uptake of AgNPs and the subsequent change in the conformation of the most abundant component, hemoglobin (Hb), from oxyhemoglobin to deoxyhemoglobin. The spectral characterization of AgNPs’ interactions with other RBC biomarkers (membrane proteins and lipids) was impeded by the dominant Hb bands, even for non-resonant Hb conditions. CytoViva hyperspectral imaging and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) served as complementary tools to effectively …

Robust Math Fluency Routines To Support And Develop Students' Emerging Skills Of Fluency:, Molli Koehler
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
In elementary school, students are gaining a mathematical foundation that propels their procedural fluency. The problem is the current mathematical systems and routines do not lend themselves to fostering an environment that enables procedural fluency skills to be built. A review of literature focused on procedural math fluency systems and routines are needed to be structured in order for students to receive an equitable, enriching, and conceptual approach to learning mathematical concepts. Located in Ames, Iowa, Abbie Sawyer Elementary’s 2022-2023 math proficiency data indicates the need for thoughtful and intentional professional learning on math fluency terminology, practices, and strategies. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp., 2n = 2x = 22) is a protein-rich crop that complements staple cereals for humans and serves as fodder for livestock. It is widely grown in Africa and other developing countries as the primary source of protein in the diet; therefore, it is necessary to identify the protein-related loci to improve cowpea breeding. In the current study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 161 cowpea accessions (151 USDA germplasm plus 10 Arkansas breeding lines) with a wide range of seed protein contents (21.8~28.9%) with 110,155 high-quality whole-genome single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify …

Assessment Mini Grant Reports
Our study sought to test the effectiveness of an enhanced and adventure-based training program on our peer mentor program. Each year we have gathered feedback and data from our peer mentors. Through this data we saw a need for enhanced training meant to improve team cohesion and engagement in the classroom. This past year we both improved our current training procedures and implemented new aspects of training. These new aspects included an adventure-based team building day at the beginning of the semester. During this day we met at a lake and focused on team building, setting goals, and leadership development. …
Effects Of Landslides On Terrestrial Carbon Stocks With A Coupled Geomorphic-Biologic Model: Southeast Alaska, United States, Adam M. Booth, Brian Buma, S. Nagorski
Effects Of Landslides On Terrestrial Carbon Stocks With A Coupled Geomorphic-Biologic Model: Southeast Alaska, United States, Adam M. Booth, Brian Buma, S. Nagorski
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Landslides influence the global carbon (C) cycle by facilitating transfer of terrestrial C in biomass and soils to offshore depocenters and redistributing C within the landscape, affecting the terrestrial C reservoir itself. How landslides affect terrestrial C stocks is rarely quantified, so we derive a model that couples stochastic landslides with terrestrial C dynamics, calibrated to temperate rainforests in southeast Alaska, United States. Modeled landslides episodically transfer C from scars to deposits and destroy living biomass. After a landslide, total C stocks on the scar recover, while those on the deposit either increase (in the case of living biomass) or …
Exploring Self-Perception And Sociocultural Adjustment Among International Students, David Martinez
Exploring Self-Perception And Sociocultural Adjustment Among International Students, David Martinez
McNair Scholars Research
With the rising numbers of international college students, institutions must assess their experiences. International students undergo major adjustments while studying abroad, which may impact their well-being. Specifically, it can affect their psychological health. The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to explore the self-perception and sociocultural adjustment of international students. It attempts this by identifying significant differences in self-efficacy and self-esteem between international and American students. The participants included a convenience sample of 75 college students, 32 international and 43 American students, from a small, private Christian university. The researcher assessed self-esteem using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and self-efficacy …
There She Is: How Beauty Pageant Standards Affect Asian American Beauty Queens, Rebecca Chia
There She Is: How Beauty Pageant Standards Affect Asian American Beauty Queens, Rebecca Chia
Research Papers
Beauty pageants were created to celebrate a woman’s beauty. However, beauty pageants then and now seem to celebrate Eurocentric beauty standards, and this is apparent in the lack of racial and cultural representation and diversity in premier pageants like Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Universe. Using in-depth interviews, the author examines how Asian American women who compete in pageants navigate their racial and cultural identities and how they define beauty standards in a white dominated space. This study identities two significant themes: 1) the Asian women control the narrative around their racial and cultural identities in a space where …

X-Ray And Uv Observations Of The Contact Binary Kic 9832227, Dirk Pandel, Lawrence A. Molnar
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
We investigate the X-ray and UV emission from the contact binary star KIC 9832227, which was observed with XMM-Newton for one orbital cycle. The binary is detected with an average X-ray luminosity of 3.4 × 1030 erg s−1. The X-ray emission is restricted to energies below 3 keV and originates from a multitemperature plasma with temperatures up to 1 keV. The X-ray spectrum has at least two distinct components, a cooler, mostly steady component, and a hotter component exhibiting significant variability. The variable X-ray emission appears to originate from a compact flare near the contact region between …
