Pachisi Go! Making A Video Game Older Than Writing, Tony C.E. Lucy None Apr 2026

Pachisi Go! Making A Video Game Older Than Writing, Tony C.E. Lucy None

ASPIRE 2026

Pachisi Go!: Making a Video Game Older Than Writing explores the process of recreating one of the world’s oldest board games as a modern digital experience using the Godot game engine. Beginning with minimal programming knowledge, this project focused on learning GDScript, experimenting with 2D and 3D design approaches, and translating traditional game mechanics into functional systems. Through iterative development, debugging, and problem-solving, a working prototype was created while addressing challenges such as scope limitations and mechanical accuracy. Although the game was not fully completed, the project emphasizes growth through failure, demonstrating how experimentation and adaptability are essential to game …

Strategies To Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening In Rural Primary Care Clinics, Brenda Sue Holland Apr 2026

Strategies To Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening In Rural Primary Care Clinics, Brenda Sue Holland

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates are lower in rural areas than in urban settings. Individuals in rural areas have lower screening rates due to geographic isolation, provider shortages, and socioeconomic barriers. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify and synthesize best practices for implementing evidence-based strategies to increase CRC screening rates in rural primary care clinics. A systematic literature search across multiple databases identified 24 relevant articles published between 2019 and 2025. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model (JHEBPM) rated articles for evidence and quality, while the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) guided the analysis. Thematic analysis identified four …

Beyond Capitalist Law: A Commentary On Katharina Pistor, The Law Of Capitalism And How To Transform It, Martijn W. Hesselink Apr 2026

Beyond Capitalist Law: A Commentary On Katharina Pistor, The Law Of Capitalism And How To Transform It, Martijn W. Hesselink

University of Miami Law Review

In her powerful new book, Katharina Pistor, grounded in the argument that capitalism is a legal regime, outlines a pathway beyond capitalist law: the transformation of private law in accordance with constitutional principles and the human capabilities approach. This short essay questions whether existing constitutions and the capabilities approach have the normative resources to overcome capitalism. Given existing corporate power entrenched in private rights, the paper also wonders who could be effective and legitimate agents of change able to transform private law into post-capitalist law. It suggests that nothing less than a revolution is needed to overcome capitalist private law …

“Conditional” Class Certification Under The Flsa: Violation Of Rule 23 And The Rules Enabling Act, Markham R. Leventhal Apr 2026

“Conditional” Class Certification Under The Flsa: Violation Of Rule 23 And The Rules Enabling Act, Markham R. Leventhal

University of Miami Law Review

So-called “collective” actions under § 216(b) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (the “FLSA”) are nothing more than “opt-in” class actions. This Article exposes the unjustifiable failure to apply Rule 23 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure to these actions, the erroneous conclusion by several circuit courts that these actions are not “representative” actions but rather some kind of “mass joinder,” and the resulting violation of the Rules Enabling Act when courts allow these “collective” actions to proceed without satisfying the requirements of Rules 23(a) and (b). The author explains why the vast majority of federal courts, using an …

Goals And Budgets: An Exploratory Study Of Sequencing In Budget Simulation Engagement, Frankline Muthomi Apr 2026

Goals And Budgets: An Exploratory Study Of Sequencing In Budget Simulation Engagement, Frankline Muthomi

Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to examine how the sequencing of budget simulations influences the alignment between priority goals and budgetary decisions. Drawing on behavioral perspectives, the study posits that two simulation sequences—goal setting to budgeting (default) and budgeting to goal setting (alternative)—shape individuals' budgetary responses, particularly the proximity between a program's total cost and the corresponding budgetary allocations. Design/methodology/approach This study employs a quasi-experimental research design using Balancing Act modules that enable participants to articulate their priority goals and corresponding resource allocations. Adult Americans (aged 18 and above) were recruited through an online crowdsourcing platform and randomly …

Multiple-Valued Quantum Automata For Robotics, Yuchen Huang Apr 2026

Multiple-Valued Quantum Automata For Robotics, Yuchen Huang

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation introduces a new type of quantum automata, their encoding and circuit realization. I concentrate on possible applications in robotics. Several methods and application of quantum automata and quantum circuit-based controllers for elementary robotic systems, with a focus on humanoid robot motion, emotion, and behavior generation are illustrated in detail. The research introduces several novel methodologies that bridge quantum computing principles with robotic control, aiming to overcome the limitations of classical deterministic and probabilistic approaches.

The dissertation first presents a quantum-circuit-based framework for generating non-repetitive and expressive (e)motions in a humanoid robot actor, using superposition and entanglement to produce …

The Legend Of Emanuel Loewner “Cap” Klingstein: “The Al Capone Of The Shenandoah Valley?” Aspire 2026 Presentation, Josh Payne Apr 2026

The Legend Of Emanuel Loewner “Cap” Klingstein: “The Al Capone Of The Shenandoah Valley?” Aspire 2026 Presentation, Josh Payne

ASPIRE 2026

Emanuel Loewner “Cap” Klingstein (1894-1971) was a notable Jewish entrepreneur in the area, owning multiple businesses and real estate between the 1920s and 1970s.  However, possible shady business practices and criminal activities, such as tax evasion and alcohol possession during prohibition, as well as local stories and legends, have raised questions about how he should be remembered. At times, he was even referred to as “the Al Capone of the Shenandoah Valley.” By utilizing primary source archival letters, genealogical records, court documents, and personal testimonies, as well as secondary sources on Jewish business in the area, organized crime, and the …

Mark Henry's Retirement: Breaking Genres And John Cena, Kayla Stanley Apr 2026

Mark Henry's Retirement: Breaking Genres And John Cena, Kayla Stanley

ASPIRE 2026

This project explores Mark Henry’s 2013 “retirement” speech in WWE as an example of how genre expectations can be used, or broken, for rhetorical impact. Professional wrestling blends athletic competition with theatrical storytelling through kayfabe, where scripted storylines are presented as real. When Henry delivered his emotional retirement speech on live television, it closely followed the structure and tone of traditional sports retirement speeches. Because of this, it seemed like many audience members believed the moment was genuine.

The speech included familiar elements found in well-known athletic retirements such as gratitude, reflection on career highlights, acknowledgment of family, and a …

Protocol For Inducing Focal Striatal Stroke In Mice Using Photothrombosis, Bridget R. Boyle, Eileen Collyer, Andrea P. Berghella, Elena Blanco-Suarez Apr 2026

Protocol For Inducing Focal Striatal Stroke In Mice Using Photothrombosis, Bridget R. Boyle, Eileen Collyer, Andrea P. Berghella, Elena Blanco-Suarez

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Here, we present a protocol for inducing focal striatal stroke in mice using photothrombosis. We describe steps for photothrombotic striatal surgery, magnetic resonance imaging, open field behavioral assessment of stroke-induced motor deficits, and post-stroke monitoring. We then detail procedures for tissue collection and immunofluorescence. This protocol provides a standardized approach for consistently modeling striatal stroke in mice, enabling mechanistic studies and preclinical therapeutic testing.
