Biomass contains up to 14 essential elements that serve as nutrients for plant growth and development, including photosynthesis and enzyme functionalities. These elements in different chemical forms (e.g., minerals) constitute the inorganic fraction of biomass and can cause operational issues in thermal and biochemical biomass conversion technologies. In biomass gasification and pyrolysis processes, for instance, inorganics can cause fouling, tar formation, and corrosion. In catalytic and biochemical processes, inorganics can poison catalysts, alter biochemical pathways, and modify product yields and selectivity. Pressure injuries (PIs) are localized injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence, resulting from sustained pressure including pressure associated from shear. Surgical patients are estimated to represent 42% of hospital acquired PIs. PIs result in poor patient outcomes, increase length of stay, add billions to heath care costs are no longer reimbursed by Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services. Prevention of PI is different in the perioperative setting due to the complexities of surgery. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with adverse health outcomes in adulthood; however, less is known about their relationship with preventive health behaviors such as cervical cancer screening. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine associations between selected ACEs and cervical cancer screening among women aged 18–65 in South Carolina. Data were drawn from the 2020 South Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and included 1,323 women. Adolescent dating violence (ADV) is a significant public health issue that disproportionately affects youths in southern rural communities, yet these populations remain underrepresented in research. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the association between ADV and sociodemographic factors (gender, race, age, and education level), alcohol consumption, and bullying among adolescents in Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi using data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. The present study aims to ascertain the publication productivity, authorship patterns, and the Degree of collaboration in two Indian Library and Information Science (LIS) journals. The related data was extracted from two LIS journals viz., “Annals of Library and Information Studies” (ALIS) and “DESIDOC Journal of Library & Information Technology” (DJLIT). The study findings show that there is a gradual decline in the number of publications published in both journals from 2015 to 2022. By exposing findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable, and AI-ready variant data, ClinGen lays a foundation for next-generation software applications, AI systems, and variant classification workflows.

Lupines (Lupinus spp.) are a common plant species located on western U.S. rangelands. Most livestock death losses due to lupine toxicosis occur in sheep. Cattle are often affected due to the teratogenic nature of lupines in which crooked calf syndrome can occur. Earwax has been used to detect lupine alkaloids in cattle, but it is unknown if the alkaloids in lupine can be detected in the earwax of sheep. Family business succession remains a persistent challenge, as many family-owned enterprises fail to survive transitions in leadership and ownership. Family business owners and stakeholders are concerned with ineffective succession because failed transitions can threaten business longevity, family relationships, and the preservation of multigenerational wealth and legacy. Grounded in the family business three-circle model and stewardship theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore effective succession strategies used by some family business owners to improve succession outcomes. The Association Between Advanced Technology Use And Quality Of Life Among Those With A Disability, Sarah Antus

Advanced medical technology use among individuals with physical disabilities remains understudied, creating a significant gap in understanding its impact on quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes across demographic and age groups. Guided by the social ecological model, the purpose of this quantitative study was to examine associations between advanced medical technology use, disability status, demographic factors (age, gender, and race/ethnicity), and QoL outcomes using 2017–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. The sample included 9,254 individuals age 6 years and older with physical functional limitations and complete technology-use and QoL data. Advanced medical technology use was significantly associated with improved QoL (p < .001). Disability status demonstrated a statistically significant but modest association with technology use, OR = 0.84, 95% CI [0.83, 0.85], p < .001. Age-stratified analyses indicated that advanced technology use significantly predicted improved QoL among adults aged 20 years and older, OR = 6.90, 95% CI [6.89, 6.91], p < .001, but not among youths aged 6–19 years (p = .929). Gender was a significant predictor of technology use, with females having higher odds than males, OR = 1.07, 95% CI [1.06, 1.08], p < .001. Race/ethnicity was also significantly associated with technology use; compared with non-Hispanic White adults, Mexican American (OR = 0.43, 95% CI [0.42, 0.44], p < .001), other Hispanic (OR = 0.58, 95% CI [0.57, 0.59], p < .001), and non-Hispanic Black adults (OR = 0.79, 95% CI [0.78, 0.80], p < .001) had lower odds of advanced medical technology use. The study may inform health care stakeholders about strategies to promote equitable access to advanced medical assistive technologies for social change

BACKGROUND

We constructed multi-trait polygenic risk scores (PRSs) predicting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and exacerbations, validated their performance in diverse cohorts, and identified PRS-related proteins for potential therapeutic targeting.

METHODS

PRSmix+, a multi-trait PRS framework, is used to train a composite PRS (PRSmulti) in COPDGene non-Hispanic White participants (n = 6,647). Associations of PRSmulti with COPD status (GOLD 2–4 vs. GOLD 0 or ICD) and exacerbation frequency were tested in COPDGene African American (n = 2,466), ECLIPSE (n = 1,858), Mass General Brigham Biobank (n = 15,152), and All of Us (n = 118,566). …

We developed a benchmark set of subclonal variants in the Genome in a Bottle (GIAB) Consortium HG002 reference material (RM) DNA for evaluating lower-frequency variant callsets. We used a somatic variant caller with high-coverage (300×) whole-genome sequencing data from the GIAB Ashkenazi Jewish trio to identify potential subclonal variants in the HG002 RM DNA. Using orthogonal sequencing data and manual curation, we defined a benchmark set with 85 high-confidence subclonal single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) (allele frequency [AF] > 5%) and a benchmark region covering 2.45 Gbp of the autosomes. The U.S. Supreme Court has entered a new era of debate regarding the appropriate use of history and tradition in constitutional interpretation. Justices Thomas and Barrett established the initial terms of that debate in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen (2022), framing the issues as whether courts should interpret individual rights provisions based on their meaning when the Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791 or when the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted in 1868, and what weight post-ratification practice should carry in determining original meaning. Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and presence of neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in the brain. Aβ oligomers are directly toxic to CNS synapses and can induce tau protein hyperphosphorylation, that causes NFT buildup. For these reasons, Aβ has been investigated as a therapeutic target, yet very few clinical trials have yielded effective drugs for AD treatment until now. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for most cases. Advances in targeted therapies and immunotherapy have improved outcomes, but their benefit depends on timely molecular characterization. Early next-generation sequencing (NGS), performed at or near diagnosis, is increasingly used to identify actionable alterations and inform first-line and perioperative treatment planning. In this review, we examine the clinical, operational, and economic rationale for early comprehensive NGS in NSCLC. Assessing long-term vegetation response to restoration requires spatially consistent monitoring approaches that capture both observed change and likely future trajectories. In the Florida Everglades, nutrient enrichment contributed to the expansion of cattail (Typha spp.) within Water Conservation Area 3A (WCA-3A), raising concerns about restoration effectiveness. This study integrates a multi-temporal Landsat time series (2004–2024), object-based image analysis (OBIA), support vector machine (SVM) classification, and Markov transition modeling to quantify and project vegetation change in WCA-3A. Object-based segmentation reduced classification fragmentation in heterogeneous marsh landscapes, while SVM improved separation among spectrally similar vegetation classes. Government speech shapes public health outcomes, yet political incentives often lead officials to either remain silent about emerging threats or subordinate scientific evidence to partisan goals. This Article examines how three factors interact to influence public health: the constitutional status of health-related speech, the political economy of public health policymaking, and the modern information environment. Drawing on insights from public choice theory, we demonstrate how misaligned incentives lead political actors to avoid communicating about health risks or spread misinformation that serves their short-term interests at the expense of population health.
